there's a ceiling above him

he's inside.

he glances over to find gerard, holding the cloth

the mirror sits on a desk, propped against the wall

"what did you do" frank asks

"i freed you. sort of. really i just bound your soul to a different object."

"without asking" comments frank

he doesnt know why he's upset

the lights flicker

gerard flinches. he notices the flicker too

"how am i supposed to find the sword now"

(how am i supposed to die)

(he supposes he could sit up and try to shatter the mirror)

"i can transfer you back to the sword. i think."

the thing about frank is that he's so preoccupied with being dead that he underestimates gerard

(he does not notice that gerard is capable of magic, regardless of all the signs, regardless of the hints he drops)

frank does not know what gerard is carrying under his arm when he comes to the lake that day

its a large, flat, recrangular object, swaddled in a cloth

its a safe bet to say its a painting

but when gerard leans it against a tree and tells frank he wants to show him something

when he tugs the cloth free:

frank is presented with his own reflection

its a mirror

frank is so busy trying to understand the strange push, like a strong, insistent gust of wind at his back, that he does not process the words coming out of gerards mouth

and then, when gerard picks up the mirror and wraps the cloth around it once more

everything goes black

sometimes frank lets the droplets pass thru him,
