Before I got into plants, I avidly hiked. Over the last weekend I went back to those roots and realized how much I missed being out on the trail and away from the world.

4th August 2022-Lakeside and home
On my lunch time walks I like spending time with my eyes away from the screen and simply taking in scenes being outdoors and the wonder of this, and today I reflected upon this a lot as I stood and watched insects flying at two moments. One moment two Speckled Woods spinning through the air which was great to see, and another an Emperor dragonfly possibly the same one as last week flying over Concorde lake an engrossing sight of this thrilling large dragonfly as always.
It was generally a good day for dragon and damselflies on the walk with Black-tailed Skimmer and Blue-tailed Damselfly seen over Concorde lake too. Speckled Wood dominated one of the last few Big Butterfly Counts I’ll do this year with it ending on Sunday I saw four of them in the count, with three Small Whites, two Meadow Browns and a Gatekeeper and Common Blue which was nice. A Common Drone fly seen well on fleabane by Concorde lake was another brilliant insect moment at lunch time in a strong few days I’ve had for hoverflies.
It was a really strong lunch time walk of flowers at Lakeside and on the way, I took so many flower pictures which stood out today of carrot, a couple of types of bindweed one white one pink and white as the first picture in this photoset shows, melilot or sweet clover, great willowherb, red valerian also known as bouncing bess one I’ve enjoyed seeing again this year as shown in the eighth picture in this photoset, thistle including some clock on it, pretty pink yarrow, possible pink cornflower and hemp agrimony. Mallow, ragowort, fleabane, and red bartsia, purple loosestrife and water mint seen well again were other highlights. But the star flower of today was black mullein. Inspired by the one I saw along the street last night I recalled them being at Lakeside around the visitor centre its where I saw my first in 2020 I seem to recall and I fancied another mullein picture this year. I was pleased to find lots of it by the visitor centre near to the red valerian its such a scrumptious flower I think and its something I could imagine in a sweet shop with its bright colours. A joy to see them probably my first locally this year too I took the third picture in this photoset among a few I took it the black mullein today. I enjoyed seeing the lavender, buddleia, camellia bush and fuchsia at home today. I took the fourth picture in this photoset of the buddleia out the back the purple flowering and also the pink flowering which is re-emerging a bit.
Seeing the Great Crested Grebe chicks was a highlight of the Lakeside walk again, two on Concorde lake and the one on Kornwestheim lake hanging about with the Mallards under the trees. I took the second picture in this photoset of one of the two together, they are showing interesting blown colours around the head/neck as they continue to grow up very well. I got some top views of a House Sparrow in the buddleia bush before my lunch time walk and enjoyed great views of Starling, Collared Dove and Jackdaw at home today with young and adult Goldfinch seen well on the balcony feeders well tonight I took the ninth picture in this photoset of a Goldfinch tonight. I enjoyed hearing Goldfinch at Lakeside today too a sweet call.
There were some great views at Lakeside today again, I took the fifth, sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of them and its interesting to see a fair few yellow leaves on trees now including well from home tonight and this morning at the front and back. It was interesting to see red berries, blackthorn sloes and blackberries again with acorns around at Lakeside too. There were some great bits of sunshine today which looked nice and there were more nice golden summer evening scenes tonight like the view out the back I took the tenth and final picture in this photoset of with nice sunrays coming down. It was nice to see lots of people out enjoying the day in the summer holidays at Lakeside at lunch time, and great to get chatting to someone else admiring the views and nature outside for a bit.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, two of my favourite dragonflies the Emperor and Black-tailed Skimmer, Mallard seen well, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Greylag Goose, Jackdaw, Collared Dove well at Lakeside and home, Starling, House Sparrow, Goldfinch, Common Blue, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Small White, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Drone fly and another fly.

[ lemonade season ; ]
"After we became a couple, she composed our time together. She planned days as if they were artistic events. One afternoon we went to Tybee Island for a picnic; we ate blueberries and drank champagne tinted with curacao and listened to Miles Davis, and when I asked the name of her perfume, she said it was L'Heure Bleue.
She talked about 'perfect moments.' One such moment happened that afternoon; she'd been napping; I lay next to her, reading. She said, 'I'll always remember the sounds of the sea and of pages turning, and the smell of L'Heure Bleue. For me they signify love."
