26/12/2023-Views and sky scenes on Boxing Day walks at Lakeside and at home. It was a classic winter day with the sun sitting behind clouds creating creamy sky scenes as the rising full moon is doing as I write this, and great bits of light. Impressive layered clouds created enticing sky scenes from start to finish with nice reflections enjoyed on the lakes. It was notable how the temperature had dropped a bit for my second walk of the day in the late afternoon and a bit of mist began to come in at Lakeside.

"You look, oddly familiar." (surviors! x gn!reader)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
INTRO
A prompt where you knew said Survivor before they came to the manor. Your reason for coming here? Probably because of them.
꒰wc꒱ 1.0k words (grammar and spelling warning, mentions of abuse in Female Dancer’s part.)
Tumblr media
The Enchantress
You and the Enchantress were together a lot as kids, or has your growing age started to wipe your memory clean? Do you struggle to remember such personal moments the two of you shared? Such a shame, as it's been over 5 years and you've yet to trace her location down. Has she disappeared from the world entirely? Seems like it, doesn't it?
Oh. Wait. There's a memory. An old one for sure, but a memory is still a memory. You and Patricia had spent what seemed to be every waking second together. So much so that Patricia's "mother" had started to see you as her own. Another child to take under her wing, and she gladly would. You understand that, right? Had she not taught you enough? The two of you had made a habit of strolling through New Orleans together, knowing almost every face that inhabited every corner of the city. You'd be down there for any number of reasons. To pick something up, to look for new ingredients, or just to look around the place you know by the back of your hand.
If the two of you had spent so much time with each other, then why didn't she tell you where the hell she went? She never left a note, a letter, or even a single clue as to where she ran off. So yes, when you received a letter stating to know her whereabouts you followed. Was it dumb? Oh for sure. But you would take every chance you could get to find her. You didn't even get to go up to her when you spotted her, she already knew.
"I wish you hadn't come," The Enchantress says with her back turned to yours. "but I can't help but be happy that you did." She chimed, turning around with a smile and a strange-looking artifact in her hand.

The Painter
You were there when it all started. You know, his painting thing. At first, he was a mess, paint slobbered all over his hands and face like a child. But I guess he was a child when he first picked up the paintbrush. Who would’ve known he would never put it down?
As Edgar’s talent increased, he started painting other things. Boats in the river, flowers growing outside, people strolling around the park where the two of you frequented. His drawings decorated his room and cluttered his bedroom floor.
For your 12th birthday, little Edgar (in all honesty) had forgotten about your birthday. The thought of it struck his mind at 1 in the morning as he quickly grabbed for his paints before whisking out a canvas. Throwing himself into his work, he produced his first of many portraits of you. From that point forward, it was a tradition for him to paint you for each birthday. No matter how many fights you had over his short temper or accidental paint spills imported from the other side of the country, you still received a packaged painting. Wrapped in fine silk with a “happy birthday” note tucked in between the folds. For you, he spared little to no expense. That is, until he got older.
It has been over two years since you've seen the man and you haven’t received a single portrait since. Arriving at the manor, you find him in the garden alone, painting a familiar portrait.
“It’s nice that you remember my face, as I’m starting to forget yours.” Your voice nearly makes him drop his paintbrush, as he whips around to meet you. You in all your stunning beauty, god, how you’ve grown from the small child he once knew.
Tumblr media
Female Dancer
It is either that you met Nata-Margaretha in Lakeside Village or during your shared time spent in the Hullabaloo circus. Both experiences that you will not forget, but time makes things foggy. It blurs memories that were important to your life that you can no longer recall. But for the sake of going to bed without a piercing migraine tonight, your brain tells you it was during the circus.
Ah, now you're starting to remember things. As memories (some unwanted) come flooding back to you about the circus. A curious place that produced good and bad thoughts. Your mind flashes back to before the accident when time was spent helping Margie (a nickname used widely throughout the circus by many of its performers) tame animals and perform new jaw-dropping tricks to stun the audience.
You remember when your ignorance of what was happening behind closed curtains came crashing down. When Margaretha came crying to you, sobbing that she needed to tell you something. She then began to show you bruises and cuts that littered her body, all deliberately hidden in places that couldn't be noticed unless further expected. To keep it short, you were shocked that "he" could do something this horrible, to decorate her upper body in purple and red marks. It was even more shocking that if anyone noticed, "he" would just brush it off and say that she got hurt while practicing.
At that time, you knew you had to get her and yourself out of there. A lack of knowledge has landed your friend with bruises, cuts, and unwanted love from someone she thought she cared for.
You haven't seen Margaretha since the fire. Actually, you haven't seen anyone since the fire. Not Mike, not Murro, not even Violetta. But following breadcrumbs as to where they all went earned you a one-way ticket to the Oletus Manor, maybe your questions will be answered there.
"Margie?" You almost choke on your words. Seeing her for the first time in so long feels nostalgic. (how old are you again?) She can't even respond, she can’t even believe it's you. All you'll get from her is a death-griping hug and a stained shirt accompanied by her ever-flowing tears.
note: I love you Patricia (writers block is kicking my a rn)

Wille abdicates in the morning of his 19th birthday. He promised himself and Erik that he would try for a year of his adult life to see if he could see himself becoming a King in the future he would be proud of. But after a year of butting heads with the royal court and Simon suffering through more royal duties than he ever desired to, he decides to put himself and his love first.
That afternoon, he takes Simon out to a park, finally free of a security team. They sit by the lakeside in silence for a while, before Wille reaches into his jacket and pulls out a ring, holding it in front of Simon. It takes Simon all of two seconds to realise what's happening and he immediately bursts into tears.
Wille reaches out to hold Simon's hand with his spare one before saying "Simme, before I met you I could never have become the person I am today. Someone brave enough to stand up to my mother and face the whole country and tell them all that being the future King is not the life I want to have. I hope that I made you proud today, and I wish to make you happy for the rest of our lives. It would be the greatest honour I could ever be given if you would agree to be my husband."
Simon sobs again before saying "what the fuck Wille, of course I will be your husband! God I'm so proud of you" and Wille lets out a sob himself as he holds out Simon's hand and slides the ring on, before launching himself into his fiancé's arms and crashing them both down. They lie there kissing and laughing and crying for the rest of the day, because for the first time there is no one else to answer to, no one to get permission to take an afternoon off from, no one to witness their love but the bees and the flowers and the sun.

Top 10 Movies that *Feel* Like Summer
(I only included films that I have seen or personally feel capture that summer feeling).
Stand By Me
Tumblr media
The boys spend their summer day going on an adventure. Along the way, they connect on a deeper level. Sure, they’re on the hunt for a body, but it’s the perfect encapsulation of childhood and those summer memories with your friends. The Oregon backdrop really creates the mood; with beautiful mountain scapes, lots of sunshine, woodland areas and swamps, etc. It’s also a beautifully written (and even more beautifully acted) film. When I think of summer as a young teen, I think of this film.
Friday The 13th / Sleepaway Camp (You could also put Fear Street Part 2 here as well)
Tumblr media
I’m putting these two together since they are virtually the same thing. Both films take place at a summer camp. And of course, involve good, wholesome Slasher fun! They have beautiful lakeside views, summer camp activities, the whole shebang! We’ve all (or most of us) been to summer camp. So I think there’s something to relate to in these films, and admire. So what if a few teenagers get their comeuppance in the process.
American Pie 2
Tumblr media
The central plot of this film is a huge blowout party by the beach. The gang orchestrates a big bash to close out summer. It’s Stiffler and the gang, so of course chaos ensues. This one’s a lot of laughs!
The Sandlot
Tumblr media
I really see this one and Stand By Me as sort of the same kind of thing. Both even share a scene where the kids have to escape a guard dog. But at their core, both are the epitome of hanging with your friends and getting into all sorts of fun during summer break. This one is just set in the summer of 1962, and with a baseball backdrop.
Jaws
Tumblr media
This one literally happens around the 4th of July weekend. It’s at the beach, and is filled with holiday festivities. It’s about as summer a movie as it can get! Oh, and it has sharks, so that’s cool!
Grease
Tumblr media
“Summer lovin had me a blast”. It’s right there in the song. Danny and Sandy meet on the beach and fall in love. Neither realize that they’ll end up at the same school. The movie comes full circle when it ends at the end of the school year and it’s summer again. To cap things off, there’s a big carnival with all the summer vibes!
The Parent Trap
Tumblr media
Another summer camp movie. Gosh, there’s so many. But this is a nice family friendly one. Twins Hallie and Annie are both sent to the same summer camp, where they discover that they were separated at birth. Of course there's the usual summer camp stuff in this one. But there’s also some great scenes later on where the whole family goes on a camping trip and the twins totally torture their soon to be stepmom with pranks. It’s hilarious and worth the watch for that alone!
National Lampoon’s Vacation
Tumblr media
This one is a bit of nostalgia from the days of going on family vacations during the summer. The Griswold’s take a cross-country road trip to Walley World, a California amusement park. In true Griswold family fashion, they run into a lot of mishaps along the way. These are so entertaining! This film is complete with stopping at a campground for the night, skinny dipping, a visit to the Grand Canyon, and eventually making it to the amusement park. Which is quite the misadventure in and of itself.
Dirty Dancing
Tumblr media
It’s the summer of 1963, and Baby is vacationing at an upscale resort with her family. She falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle. Throughout the film we see the two of them grow closer together as he teaches her a routine for the upcoming end of summer shindig. This one isn't as summer filled as some of the others on this list, but it definitely takes place during that time and has  great lakeside views as well,
I Know What You Did Last Summer
Tumblr media
Summer is literally in the name. This is another one that takes place on (and around) July 4th. On July 4, 1996, Julie James and her friends take a drive to the beach. They hit someone on the drive and dump the body to cover it up. Fast forward a year later, Julie is back from college for the summer when she and her friends begin receiving letters saying, "I know what you did last summer!" From there, someone in a rain slicker and a hook for a hand starts stalking and killing the characters off one by one. An integral part of this film is the 4th of July celebrations in the town. A Parade. A pageant. The seaside scapes! This (and Jaws) are July 4th MUST WATCHES for me every year!

Zeydaan and Isabella's Draconic Break
Zeydaan decides to take the shortcut down the mountain, Night Fury style. Story by AxiomTF
The weather up here was frigid, to put it mildly. Large evergreen trees scraped the sky around land, with long, crisp blades of grass coating the ground, with the occasional bolder protruding out from the Earth. Much of the land was coated in condensated water, with millions of little droplets clinging to much of the plant life. The sounds of wildlife were mostly drowned out by the howling on the wind, which shook the branches of the trees to-and-fro, as a group of interdimensional adventurers made their way up a long, winding dirt path to their destination - a picnic spot with an amazing view. The members of the Hawkmoths team had planned on having an outdoor picnic together, though the typical park or lakeside venue had unfortunately gotten a bit dull for them at this point, especially considering the fantastical worlds and dimensions they frequently found themselves in. No, this time, they wished for something more exotic, though it seems as if being up the side of a Nordic mountain was pushing it just a little too far. They had gotten here thanks to the help of Zeydaan, and their fancy dimensional portal making skills. As their paws pressed against the dirt, trudging up the mountain pathway, they knew that once the crew got to their destination, this short outdoor excursion would be well worth it.  At the front of the group was Alvis, who was carrying two large hampers in either one of their robotic hands; they didn’t have much use for the food inside personally, but they were still happy to spend some time with their fellow team members. Following close behind them were Ashley, Lilith, and Zachery - the former pair had been engaging in some casual nattering all the way up the path, whilst Zach kept to himself, having been too preoccupied with keeping himself warm, as even three layers seemingly wasn’t enough to block out the coldness of the alpine air here. Finally, at the very back was Zeydaan, who carried a smaller cooler filled with ice, and a large, freshly picked haddock fruit that they’d got the other day, hoping to smoke it around the fire. Their thoughts lingered on their friend, Iffy, who was busy handling a personal project back at home, and was unable to attend with the rest of their team today; Zeydaan hoped they were doing well, at that moment. “Jeez Zey, could you really not have made the portal any closer to this spot you were on about? I should have brought my trekking boots with me, if I knew you were planning on us having a hike there.” Lilith jokes, her head pivoting to face her wolven friend as they keep walking simultaneously, mud squelching under their feet, as they traverse over a slightly waterlogged section of the pathway. Her joke makes Zeydaan chuckle softly to themselves. “Hey, I thought you said that you were thinking of getting a bit more toned the other day - losing a little around the sides? Besides, nothing beats a country walk Lilith. Trust me, this is all part of the experience!” “Oh yeah, there’s nothing like a hike through the middle of nowhere in the blistering cold… you can’t beat this. I mean, I thought it might be fun to stay home and have some hot chocolate together, but nooo, this is much better, of course. Ugh… I stopped being able to feel my toes around half an hour ago.” Zach interjects sarcastically, prompting Lilith to roll her eyes, and Zeydaan to smile cheekily - he never had done well in the cold, though fortunately for him, they had just come upon an opening ahead! The trees gave way to a patch of land that led to a sheer drop-off. Even without peeking over the edge, the Hawkmoths could tell that it must be a long, long way to the ground below. Aside from that, the view was everything that Zeydaan had hoped - absolutely breathtaking. Without a canopy of leaves and dense foliage blocking the sun any longer, rays of sunshine breached the fluffy clouds in the sky and shone down upon the crew, providing a very slight amount of warmth for them all. It was enough to make the climate much more comfortable for them. “Now then, shall we get that campfire and grill set up?” Ashley asks, unrolling a large, flannel patterned picnic blanket that she’d hauled up the pathway, before laying it out flat upon a drier portion of the grass. The group look around at each other, their eyes jumping from person to person, waiting for someone to bring forth the requested campfire. However, all that came was a rather awkward silence. “We… we did bring the grill, right? Guys?” Still, there is silence, as a deflated groan escapes Lilith’s lips. “You’re joking, right? You guys are seriously not telling me that we left the damn thing back home? After coming up all of this way!? Well… that’s just great.” Zach sighs, as the crew look around at the area in disappointment… before then turning to face Ashely, and idea popping into their minds at the very same moment. She looks at them all for a moment, wondering if she was missing something, before she realises what they were all thinking. "No. No, there’s no way I’m doing that, you lot. I'm not gonna go fire dragon because someone forgot the bloody stove. And besides, my powers are-" “An ancient draconic tradition, only used for the greater good and not for cheap tricks or convenience - we know." The group reply in unison - all except Zeydaan, that is. An idea had begun to brew in their head, as they lay their cooler down, and open it to retrieve the contents inside. The fruit is slightly slimy to the touch. “I guess we really should have stayed back at home… there’s not really much else to do around here. Though we still have some free time today… is anyone still down for that hot chocolate?” Zachery suggests, as the group collectively nods in agreement. “Welp, at least we got some exercise out of this! I suppose the walk back down the pathway will be a bit more pleasant too, with it being downhill for the most part… plus there’s certainly nothing wrong with working on our calves!” Ashley jokes whilst stretching, as the picnic blanket is rolled back up after a few stray blades of grass get dusted off by Alvin. Zeydaan pauses for a moment, turning around and looking back at the cliff, then down at their fish, before facing their friends once more as they get ready to depart back to the portal. “Actually guys… I think I might hang around here. You go on.” Zach looks at the wolf, giving a rather bewildered glance at them, as he holds his thick parka coat tighter around his frame in an attempt to trap more of his body heat inside. “W-What? What’re you on about, Zey? Why on earth would you wanna stay here? I mean, I know all of that fur must insulate you well, and keep you more toasty than yours truly, but aren’t you… y’know, bloody freezing right now!?” “I’m rather cold at the moment… but not for long…” Zeydaan explains, once again looking down at their fish - its scales shine in the sunlight, with the coldness of the area doing well to keep it nice and fresh. “It’s been a good while since I’ve had a break from… well, life in general. I think this’d do me a lot of good, honestly.” Zeydaan turns around, confused for a moment, as they observe the concerned faces of their friends staring back at them. They think for a brief moment, before catching on to the probable cause of their worry. “Oh! Sorry - I didn’t mean it like that. I just fancy a break from stress… routine… that sort of thing, you know? I have something planned which I can handle myself - it’ll just take a little bit of magic and concentration. Don’t worry, I’ll be back in around a fortnight, if that’s cool with all you lot?” They clarify. The rest of the group smile, not saying anything, as they exchange quick glances. “Alrighty then… have fun, I suppose! We’ll meet you back in Mailor. We'll let the menagerie know, and set a fortnight timer- usual protocol, if you don't make the rendezvous… though I’m sure that you already know that.” Alvis adds, before they turn and begin heading back down the cliff side, towards the interdimensional portal that the crew had made in order to get here. Zeydaan watches them for a little while - the wind blowing their fur from side to side, as the sounds of their friends footsteps treading against the dirt pathway fade gradually, until they reach the portal. One by one, they hop through it, until the last member of the group hops on through to leave the wolf alone. Finally… some proper quiet. Zeydaan savours this for a while, concentrating on the sound of the wind blowing, and some birds chirping away in a nearby oak tree. Nature surrounded them as far as the eye could see, and it made for such a lovely respite… away from the hustle and bustle of regular life. This feeling of tranquillity triggers a gentle smile to spread across Zeydaan’s face, before they return to the edge of the cliff, and take a seat there - their legs dangling off of the edge. The unusual fruit upon their lap looked far from appetising. Of course, Zeydaan’s initial plan had been to cook, season, and serve it to their friends, as a part of the now aborted picnic session. But now, this would serve as the catalyst for their transformation - their temporary escape. Right now, Zeydaan was planning on becoming a Night Fury for a while. The area was perfectly suited to becoming such a beast, and since they loved seafood so much, the wolf’s fishy fruit would make for the perfect trigger. Of course, they had to first bite-off a mouthful of it, in order to trigger the transformation, and in their current state, it certainly won’t taste the best. Nevertheless, the unpleasant taste would only be temporary, and well worth doing in order to spend some much needed, care-free time as a mighty dragon - a Night Fury. With that in mind, Zeydaan lifts the haddock fruit to their snout, and takes a large bite out of it. They scrunch their eyes shut, trying to chew it quickly, but thoroughly, before gulping it down; with this act completed, their transformation would begin momentarily, as they stand up and look down over the cliff… They take a deep breath, and jump. The wind rushes past their hair, as the wolf plummets down - the side of the rocky cliff whizzing past them, at least from their own point of view. The ground beneath them was obscured by a blanket of thick, fluffy clouds that resembled white cotton candy, and from this height, they seemed to be stationary down there, making it seem as if Zeydaan wasn’t falling that fast. They didn’t have a great deal of time to ponder this fact, though, as their attention was then drawn to how tight their clothing had become… the sleeves of their thick, winter coat felt as if they were now a size too small, as the inner lining squeezed the wolf’s arms. Both the amount of fat and muscle contained within their body had begun to increase at an alarming rate, though any discomfort that this was causing was smothered by the thrilling sensation of falling. The wind blasting their body, the cool, crisp alpine air around them, along with that sinking sensation in the groyne… it was a real rush! “WOOOO!!” Zeydaan calls out, plummeting down with a big, silly grin smeared across their face, as they reach to unzip their jacket, and throw it aside. They briefly consider the fact that they probably should have just asked their friends to take it home with them, before jumping; it’d have saved them losing a coat, but it was far too late for that at this point. Besides, they could just buy another when it was needed. Underneath their fur, large, black scales begin to grow and spread, layering themselves over one another as this pushes out the many hair follicles that cover their body. The rapidly shedding hair forms a trail behind them as they fall - much like a comet, and its tail. With each passing second, their body grows an inch wider and taller, as for a moment, their eyes sting. Zeydaan shuts them, their claws starting to lengthen during this time, as by the time they’re opened, they now see through brand new emerald green eyes. Blessed with improved, draconian vision, the clouds below can be seen in incredible detail… It isn’t too long into their fall before the trousers which clung around the legs of Zeydaan give way, as they are torn apart to allow their growing hind legs some breathing room. Their new muscles bulge and swell, whilst their tail, now hairless and smooth, lengthens considerably. Stretching to around ten feet tall within a few moments, Zeydaan rolls over in the air to get a better look - out of their new skin, two ridges protrude out of opposite sides at the very end of their tail. These slowly develop, getting larger and larger until they’ve formed into fully-fledged tail fins, the appearance of which somewhat resemble the wings of a bat! The wolf-dragon hybrid flicks their tail up and down, and then side to side, finding that they still have complete control over it, as their hands begin to grow more girthy. An unpleasant assortment of cracking and popping noises emanate from that region, as their bones reshape. One may assume that this would be a highly painful experience, however, and fortunately for Zeydaan, the process feels oddly pleasant - even ticklish! After a while, either one of their hands has been moulded into the thick, chunky ends of their new front legs, complete with shiny, razor-sharp claws that could probably cut through metal. Every single area of their body felt powerful… their musculature having been bulked up in all areas by this stage of their metamorphosis, as this feeling of power provides a real high for Zeydaan. This experience was shaping up to be everything that they had hoped for, and more! Their ears remain large, in relation to their head, though the ends became less pointy - more rounded. Their old fangs seem to get even sharper, as the width of their skull expands outwards. Two small flaps push out from their jawline on either side, as at this point, no more fur remains on their body - even their long hair has been removed, leaving only jet black dragon scales in their place.  A loud cracking sound echos out from their back, as their spine snaps and contorts to force Zeydaan into a new stance - one which would have them walking on all-fours once they were on solid ground… and on that note, Zeydaan had passed through the thick layer of clouds that they had spied a little bit ago. Of course, they had been too distracted with their transformation to notice the sizable distance they’d travelled whilst falling… the ground below could still not be observed, with the fog around them being too thick to see past, even for their improved eyesight. Zeydaan worries as to if they should have transformed before jumping, as two large nubs poke out of their back. They lengthen quickly, stretching out before thick skin spreads out from these protruding limbs. This quickly culminates in a set of wings bursting out, and not a moment too soon! At last, the rocky ground comes into view - flying towards their face at terminal velocity, to be precise. Their wingspan is immense, as it spreads out and traps the air beneath them - woosh! The former wolf pulls up, their new wings and body feeling so natural to them, as they flap their wings and rise above the floor before they could greet it with their face. It’s rather hard to form a smile in this new form, but if they could, Zeydaan would most certainly be sporting one at this moment. The view was awe-inspiring… unlike anything they’d seen before, even considering the many fantastical places they’d visited in their life. They let out a mighty roar, before feeling heat rising out of their body, down their throat, and finally out of their mouth as a ball of plasma shoots forth! They pump their wings, gaining altitude as they soar over the forest below them… this truly was the good life, and Zeydaan couldn’t wait to take advantage of their new form! Maybe by catching some fish first… their transformation had really made them work up an appetite!

Explore Branson Golf Destination Courses Shine in ‘Golfweek’s Best’ Annual Rankings
Five cited for excellence in Missouri including the top four, three garner ‘Top 100 Public Course’ status
Golfweek recently announced two “Golfweek’s Best” lists (“Top Courses by State” and “Top 100 Public Access Courses”) and five courses in the Explore Branson golf destination garnered best-of recognition in them.
Nationally, Ozarks National (Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design), Buffalo Ridge (Tom Fazio and Johnny Morris), and Payne’s Valley (Tiger Woods) earned distinction in the “Top 100 Public Course” list, ranking nos. 51, 77, and 93, respectively.
For Missouri public courses, Golfweek course raters ranked Ozarks National No. 1 in the state, Buffalo Ridge No. 2, Branson Hills No. 3 (Chuck Smith/Bobby Clampett), Payne’s Valley No. 4, and LedgeStone No. 7 (Tom Clark).
The hundreds of members of Golfweek’s course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce the final rankings.
“Golfweek bestowing this honor on us validates not only that our course is considered one of the finest, but also that the Branson golf destination is one of the best with five courses voted into the state’s top 10,” said Dan Davis, PGA, Branson Hills Golf Club, Director of Golf.
Branson’s five other courses are Top of the Rock (Jack Nicklaus), Mountain Top (Gary Player), Thousand Hills (Bob Cupp), The Pointe, and Holiday Hills. Top of the Rock and Mountain Top are award-winning par-3 courses, a welcome addition in golf trips where players tee up 18-holers in the morning, then add afternoon “short course” rounds. Thousand Hills has often earned “favorite course” status among area golfers, while The Pointe and Holiday Hills provide additional popular 18-hole playing options.
The two short courses and Ozarks National, Buffalo Ridge, and Payne’s Valley are amenities of Big Cedar Lodge.
All 10 courses in the destination are located near one another as well as hundreds of restaurants, lodging options, and after-golf attractions.
“Golfweek rating five of our 10 courses among the finest in the state and country is exciting; we hope it inspires people to visit our golf destination in the Branson Missouri Ozarks,” said Lynn Berry, Director of Communications, Explore Branson.
Branson is the No. 3 rated trending tourism destination in America according to Tripadvisor, a place where live entertainment theatres, lakes, museums, a world-famous theme park (Silver Dollar City), sports venues, outdoor adventures, and family friendly activities proliferate.
Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel guidance platform named Branson’s Silver Dollar City the No. 1 theme park in the United States last week. Utilizing traveler reviews and ratings for experiences, tours, activities, and attractions on their site over a 12-month period (May 1, 2022 - April 30, 2023), as well as an additional editorial process, earned the theme park top status.

Happy Canada Day
This day recalls 156 years since in 1867 when the US beneath them appeared to be gaining in influence, three great chunks of administrations decided to come together under one all embracing banner, Canada instead of BNA (British North America). Until 1982 it was called Dominion Day, but I guess that might mean different things to different people so it was changed again. Originally it was Anniversary of Confederation Day. Well that sounds exceedingly Victorian and stuffy. Legislation, passed by the British Parliament, created Canada as a new, domestically self-governing federation, consisting of the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec, on July 1, 1867, although it looks like BC didn't chip in their tuppence ha'pence until 1871. Further to this, a royal decree in 1868 requests all Her Majesty's Canadian subjects should celebrate on 1st July. It all seems very complicated and how Queen Vic kept up with it from thousands of miles away in London, goodness only knows. Well anyway from what we have seen so far is that Canadians are intending a right knees up and joining in with the spirit of the thing. Flags are up, schools are off and all the RVs (recreational vehicles) are on the road heading for the lakes and coast.
Now Lonely Planet does not brim over with excitement vis-a-vis Salmon Arm. It struggles to find any preoccupation for a tourist who has strayed this far off the beaten and has probably little sympathy if he did.
As the day progressed and expectations were high, the picture that comes to mind is rather that of a damp squib. There was a small hiatus along the main road in downtown Salmon Arm. A group of enthusiastic Canadian citizens were agitated about something. Canada maple leaf flags were abundant and there were placards regarding rights either to be in the LGBT community or possibly not to be as such. Honk if you agree. Hmm, not actually being exactly clear on the subject we deferred.
That being the only incident involving flags etc we proceeded down to the wharf on Sushwap Lake for a little Canada Day preamble. Well be careful who you talk to. We met an elderly Canadian and his elderly oriental wife on the jetty who surprisingly appeared a little anti Canadian and did somewhat confirm the Lonely Planet guide's summation of Salmon Arm; there's not much here. On reflection he came up with a couple of suggestions for us to occupy our time here with. Go to Herald Provincial Park he said. Also you might walk alongside the lake in the other direction. With no other suggestions we did just that. Sadly, all the other revellers went as well. In the middle of nowhere this place was too! We ate our sandwiches, looked forlornly around for somewhere to get a drink, gave up and drove 20km back to Salmon Arm to do number two on the long list of two. This was entirely agreeable. We strolled in the searing sun along the lakeside path which weaved around what was in effect breeding grounds for birds and waterfowl. We saw Red Winged Blackbirds, Clark's Grebe and Western Grebe among others. Loads of Canada Geese of course (in their correct home locality). It was like being in Slimbridge. Following the course of the lake was the main line railway. Amazing freight trains that I calculated to be 1.5km in length rumbled by!
On returning to town we went to search for the celebrations commemorating such an important day. Well, perhaps there'll be more tomorrow? The town was dead, no parties where we are staying, couldn't even find a pub for a beer, nothing....
We had our own celebration; bottle of Canadian SB and sausage egg fried rice.
ps It is said that one should drink a Caesar and eat chicken wings to celebrate Canada Day. We couldn't find anywhere open to even try this aspect of support for the event!
pps This is a stunningly beautiful country. The danger is not to be blinded by repetition of seeing too many lakes, mountains and waterfalls.
ppps Tomorrow we are on the road again, further into the mountains to a place called Golden. Lonely Planet seems a little undecided about this, but we are very optimistic.

The Daimyo Oak         The oldest documented Bonsai tree in America is a dwarfed potted Daimyo Oak (Quercus dentata). Also known as the "Abraham Lincoln" tree, it is believed to be the first bonsai to brought into the United States. This Lincoln tree is also the oldest documented bonsai in this country.  It is said to have been presented to Anson Burlingame by the Emperor of Japan, who brought it with him back to the U.S. during Lincoln’s presidency. Burlingame had been the U.S. Ambassador to China and was returning home via Japan when he was presented with this Daimyo Oak. This tree had an obvious status and a certain age as a bonsai for the Emperor of Japan to present it to a visiting dignitary.
Daimyo Oaks have rather large leaves that do not respond well to size reduction. So by current standards they aren't generally considered good material for bonsai. As an historical example, it is a good example of styles and tastes change.  It would appear when this tree was presented to Burlingame it was acceptable to have bonsai with large leaves.
The tree spent most of its life as a patio tree growing in a large "100 year-old egg" container.  Many years ago, a Dr. Gotcher acquired it from a member of the Burlingame family.  When the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. opened the North American Collection of Bonsai in 1991, the tree was offered to the collection. It was however, turned down as it had become overgrown  and had "grown out" of it's training pattern.
When the Collection-North opened in 1999, the tree was then offered to the Collection, and Curator, Kathy Shaner, gladly accepted the tree.  At the time it was over eight foot tall and quite "scraggly"....but Shaner began a program of training and nurturing.  The trunk, meanwhile, had its dead hardwood reamed out.  A contemporary description describes that "Now a furrowed and hollow trunk that has grown without any restraining binding for many years, its few browned oak leaves gracing its topmost branch like a rooster's comb, the gnarly tree rests humbly in a black metal tub at the newly opened Bonsai Garden at Lakeside Park in Oakland."
The Daimyo Oak can she seen at the Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt Bonsai in Oakland, California

                                        Syon Manor in England.
~ “Syon House is the lavish home of the Duke of Northumberland, built in the 1500s. The house includes a great hall based on a Roman basilica and a bedroom used by Queen Victoria. The 3rd Duke built the spectacular Great Conservatory in the 1820s and is thought to be the earliest of its kind in the country. The gardens are Grade I listed, were landscaped by Capability Brown and include a collection of rare trees and plants, a rose garden and circular lakeside walk. Syon House is the west London residence of the Duke of Northumberland. A Grade I listed building, it lies within the 200-acre Syon Park, in the London Borough of Hounslow. The family's traditional central London residence had been Northumberland House, now demolished.” ~
