Breaking The Ice

Chapter One

Groaning as he felt a weight suddenly climbing on top of his stomach, Reki knew before he even opened his honey-toned eyes that one of his youngest siblings had begun to grow impatient and was currently working on the task of waking her big brother up.

"Hey Bud, what's wrong? Was I sleeping too long?" Reki yawned as he opened his eyes to see Nanaka sitting on him with a small giggle escaping her. Shifting his eyes to the side he saw the other half of the twins leaning against his bedside, peeking up at him. Wrapping one arm around Nanaka, Reki had her settle in his lap while he sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed; his other hand reaching out to playfully ruffle Chihiro's already messy hair.

Turning to look at his clock, the digital red numbers told him that it was already past 11:00 a.m. Today was one of his lazy mornings where he slept in close to noon. His mother usually kept the twins occupied for a while but they always found a way to barge into his room sooner or later. Who needs an actual alarm clock when he has two of them running around?

"Tell mom I'll be out shortly, kay?"

"Kay!" Both siblings chanted in unison before Nanaka climbed down and ran after her younger twin who was now in search of her mommy. Yawning once more while running a hand through his hair, Reki checked his phone to see that he had a missed text from Langa.

Snowbae: Are we still on for movie night?

10:34 a.m.

Oh, that was right. They had planned to have their annual movie night over at the Kyan household this time later tonight. On the first Saturday of every month, the two of them started going over to each other's houses to have a movie night and binge on a bunch of snacks. S took up most of their time during the week but once in a while, it was nice to spend time together with his best friend. This time, however, Miya had been invited when he had overheard them talking about their plans the week beforehand. It started as a thing just for Langa and him to do but Reki was happy to have Miya hanging out with them as well. The kid was like a younger brother to him after all.

Reki: Of course dude. Same time as always.😜

11:13 a.m.

Messaging Miya as well to let him know what time he should stop by, Reki set his phone on his desk before walking to his closet to try and decide which hoodie he wanted to wear for today.

"About time you woke up." Reki's eldest younger sister, Koyomi, spoke while sitting at the table. She was finishing up some homework that she hadn't had the night before, wanting to get it out of the way so she didn't have to worry about it the rest of the day. "There's still some leftover bacon that mom made."

"Thanks for letting me know," Reki responded, ignoring her first statement while he rolled up the sleeves of his purple hoodie; set on grabbing some eggs from the fridge that he was going to fry up to go along with the bacon.

"Oh, good morning Reki." His mother greeted with the twins trailing behind her just as the pan started to sizzle. Saying morning back to her in return, Reki turned to throw the shells away with his sisters chanting that they wanted some eggs too.

"You girls already had breakfast," Masae reminded, telling them that they would be eating lunch here in a little while. "Before I forget Reki, can you please do me a favor and run to the store when you have the chance? I plan to work with the twins this afternoon and prepare them for the hoikujo interview that's on Monday."

"Yeah, sure thing. It's no problem." Reki agreed as he flipped the eggs over. He figured while he was there he could pick up some extra snacks for tonight as well. Grabbing a plate after turning the stove off, Reki slid the two eggs onto it before adding what bacon was left for him. Taking his plate into the dining room while his mother started writing down a list. Koyomi was packing up her books having finished her homework and turned to her brother who sat across from her.

"Langa's coming over later, right? Have you guys decided what movie we're going to watch?" Koyomi questioned, planning to join them like she usually did.

Shaking his head to the second half of her question, Reki let himself finish chewing before answering. "We normally don't decide till the last minute. It's sometimes hard to choose and if we did pick ahead of time we'd probably just end up changing our minds anyways. Miya is also coming over this time so we'll probably let him choose." Reki responded before taking another bite.

"Miya? Oh, right he's that boy you told me about. The skateboard prodigy?" Koyomi was aware that Reki had other friends but didn't know any of them besides Langa. Reki hadn't told his sister about S yet and couldn't explain the real reason why he had met all of them but he did mention how he met Miya at Dope Sketch where he worked and sometimes skated with the younger boy. It wasn't a lie. That was what technically happened. Reki just left out a few details.

"He is pretty good for someone his age." Reki agreed. "Some of the tricks he does is freakin' insane! I don't know how he manages to keep his balance with some of them."

Taking the last few bites of his breakfast, Masae came in and placed a folded piece of paper on the table next to him along with some bills that were a little crumbled from being buried in her purse. "Thank you again, Honey. If you can think of anything that I might have forgotten to write down, go ahead and get it, okay?" Reki only nodded since his mouth was still full; grabbing a napkin to wipe a few crumbs from his face to signal that he was done eating.

"Can I come too?" Koyomi questioned as they both got up. "I don't mind helping and it's better than being cooped up inside on a Saturday. Plus I want to get more of that strawberry pocky that I like."

"I thought you just bought some" Reki responded as he picked up his plate; not too surprised that she ate them all already. Anything strawberry-flavored usually didn't last long with Koyomi around. "We'll leave once I finish cleaning up" Reki agreed to let her tag along before making his way back to the kitchen.

"Onee-san!" Koyomi turned her head and looked down just as Chihiro clung to her. "Will you visit us in hoikujo?" Nanaka smiled, excited about going.

"With all the new friends you two will make you won't need your Onee-san to hang around with," Koyomi told them with a smile as she knelt to their height to fix Chihiro's hair that was coming loose.

"Ready?" Reki asked as he slipped his shoes on, watching as Koyomi ran into the front entrance with her skateboard in hand.

"I assume you're bringing your board too?" Koyomi knew her brother wouldn't pass up the chance to skate somewhere even if it was just to the store and back.

"You know me so well" Reki chuckled as he picked up his board that was sitting near the door before calling out to their mom that they would be back soon.

The Kyan siblings were both on their boards and taking off as soon as they had stepped outside; smirks forming on their faces as they made their way down the road. Being more experienced, Reki took the lead, noticing that Koyomi was trailing behind. "Come on Koyomi you can go faster than that!" Reki encouraged, grinning as she pushed herself to try and keep up. It wasn't often that the two of them got to skate alongside each other like this. Reki had taught her how to ollie and a few other beginner moves but that was mainly at home or at the closet skatepark that they could walk to. Now that Koyomi was fully comfortable on a board she wanted to attempt some new tricks and even dared to try and pass her brother only to pout a bit when he pulled ahead again.

Promising to teach her something new sometime, Reki hopped off his board as soon as they arrived at the store with Koyomi doing the same. They made their way around the store while getting most of the things on the list before separating and browsing at different options. Reki was debating on whether to get buttered or caramel popcorn when he heard a voice speak up behind him.

"I would get the caramel popcorn but that's just me."

Turning his head, Reki saw one of the founders of S standing there with his shopping basket in hand. "Oh hi Cherry, what are you doing here?"

"Same as you. Just running a few errands. And I told you not to call me that name in public!" Cherry narrowed his eyes slightly, feeling that he shouldn't have to remind the boy. "Are the snacks for a special occasion?" He questioned seeing that the redhead also had some M&Ms and chips with him.

"Langa is coming over to watch a movie," Reki explained as he settled on the caramel popcorn as Cherry suggested. "Though Miya is joining us so I should find something he'd like as well."

"That boy is a picky eater." Cherry sighed as he adjusted his glasses. "I do recall him taking a liking to Dango; preferring to eat them with milk if that helps". Cherry remembered the young boy trying the snack the last time he saw him.

Reki went to thank the older man for the advice when another familiar face came around the corner. "Hey Kaoru, this is a good deal, don't you think?" A more muscular-looking man asked while holding a new insta pot that he planned to purchase. He stopped the conversation from going any further when he saw who his long pink-haired friend was talking to. "Reki! Hey, how's it going?"

"Joe my man!" Reki fist bumped him, explaining that he was here with his sister who was around here somewhere. "Did you guys come here together?" Reki looked between the two men, finding it a bit strange that they would go shopping together.

"I told him not to tag along," Cherry scoffed, feeling that Kojiro didn't need to help him pick up a few things. His injuries have healed and he no longer needed to be pushed in a wheelchair so he was perfectly capable of doing this task himself. "You already have plenty of coffee mugs. You don't need another one." Cherry scolded seeing that Joe was also holding onto the handle of a robin egg blue-colored mug.

"You can't tell me what I can and can't buy!" Joe argued back, saying that he happened to like this particular mug.

"You're worse than the kids sometimes" Cherry closed his eyes in annoyance. "I suppose I should get this ape moving before he picks up any more useless things. I assume that we will see you at S tomorrow night?" Cherry questioned, feeling that he had everything he came for; ready to check out.

"You know it!" Reki gave them a thumbs up, saying that he looked forward to witnessing Joe's next beef as the two adults turned out of the aisle. He had to do a double-take but he couldn't help but notice that there was a cherry blossom design on the other side of the mug that he didn't see previously as they rounded the corner.

"I got the tomatoes and sandwich rolls!" Koyomi called out as she finally found her brother; also holding onto two boxes of strawberry pocky. "Who were you just talking to?" She could have sworn she heard him saying goodbye to someone.

"Huh? Oh! Just a couple of friends who stopped to say hi real quick" Reki explained, not getting into it too much. "Do we have everything?"

"Looks like it," Koyomi spoke, peering over Reki's shoulder to look at the list. "Hey, since mom will be busy with Nanaka and Chihiro, can you teach me that last trick you showed me?"

Nodding his head, Reki said he wanted to grab some Dango before they checked out; leading the way. Reki liked it when he got to be her cool big brother and skate with her but he wished that she would find someone her age to skate with. There was nothing better than skating alongside a good friend and he wanted Koyomi to know how good that felt.

After paying for their stuff, the siblings strolled home on their boards instead of trying to race each other like before since they had their hands full now. Since their mom was sitting in the dining room with the twins, they put everything away in their kitchen as quietly as they could before going back outside with their boards.

They spent the afternoon together with Reki teaching Koyomi a trick he had recently learned to nail. She slipped up and landed on her butt quite a bit but the last time she was a lot closer to getting it.

"I almost had it! Did you see?" Koyomi called out to her brother as she got in position to start again.

"Looking good Koyomi!" Reki grinned, using one hand to cup his mouth so she could hear him from a distance. "This trick isn't something you can get in a day so if it takes a couple of weeks don't worry about it."

"Hey, I learned how to do an ollie in a month. I think I can pull it off." Koyomi spoke confidently as she tried not to burst out laughing at her brother's reaction. Had his younger sister pulled off one of the most basic skateboarding tricks a lot sooner than he had? He honestly couldn't remember how long it had taken her. He just remembered how happy he felt for her when she dragged him outside excitedly after dinner one night to show him how much her hard work was paying off. He still had the video that he had taken on his phone.

"Maybe I'm just a faster learner than you" Koyomi smirked as she attempted the trick once again. She ended up tumbling off her board but with how confident she looked and with her determination to pull it off, Reki found that he didn't doubt her. She might not have been skating as long as he has but she was making great progress and he couldn't be more proud.
