langblr reactivation challenge day two

Day 2: Write a list of goals you have for your target languages. Make both long term and short term goals. An overall goal could be to have the ability to talk with native speakers with ease and a smaller goal would be to finally learn that difficult grammar point that's been plaguing you for ages. How will you achieve them?

Olá ! it’s day two of the langblr reactivation challenge, time to set some goals for ourselves.

with learning european portuguese i have quite a few goals, but let’s split them into short and long term..

short term

- learn my first 50 words

- practice everyday (thank u quizlet + babbel)

- nail verb conjugations

long term

- be able to understand spoken portuguese by native speakers (and their speed)

- be able to confidently speak conversational portuguese

- be able to write/journal in portuguese with ease (expanded vocabulary)

- to visit lisbon, portugal and navigate the trip with ease (ordering food, renting a vespa, asking for directions, checking into the hotel, etc)

those are just a few of my current goals

in order to achieve these goals, i am working through a few free online programs, as well as just looking up what i think i need to learn first, and studying those things. i am trying to be disciplined and do this every single day, because consistency and practice makes for improvement !

Plenty new vocab learned today! Again, slowly starting to understand grammar rules and masc/fem vocabulary. I'm sure with time I will understand a lot better, though I realise I might need to up this one to two lessons a week rather than one

i know i know, translation isn't a good way to learn a language, but its not the only thing i do, and i cant help it, its so fun

Here's a list of abbreviations that Brazilians use:

pro/pra -para o/para a -this meaning depends on the context but it can be

Fds -fim de semana -weekend OR -foda-se -fuck you/fuck this/screw this

Hj -hoje -today

tô /tá -estou/está -i am/he/she/it is

Vc/ce/cê -você -you

Cmg -comigo -with me

Gnt -gente -guys (used to refer to the whole group of people addressed)

Tbm -também -also/as well

Vdd -verdade -true 

Blz -beleza -sorted/great

Msg -mensagem -message

Pfv -por favor -please

Pq -porque -because

Mto -muito -a lot/very

Sdd -saudade -this means something similar to nostalgia or to miss someone/something

Bjs -beijos -kisses (get your mind out of the gutter!!)

The inspiration behind this post is a text my friend sent in a group chat: “Be ce ta na uni” meaning Bê, are you at uni (university)? I saw this and felt proud of how much Portuguese I’ve learnt because honestly it is a difficult language.

Why does Portuguese have an /f/ most places that Spanish has an /h/ at the beginnings of words?

falar vs. hablar ‘to speak’

filho vs. hijo ‘son’

formiga vs. hormiga ‘ant’

/f/ was the original pronunciation retained from Latin, but in the Iberian peninsula that /f/ first changed to an /h/, and then disappeared entirely. Spanish writing still reflects the time when the /h/ was pronounced, even though today the sound has disappeared entirely.

There were some exceptions though. The /f/ was retained before /w/:

fuego

fuente

fuerte

fuimos

And before consonants:

flor

frío

flecha

frente

And sometimes Spanish kept both versions with slightly different meanings:

fastidio & hastío ‘nuisance, boredom’

fibra & hebra ‘fiber, thread’

fajo & haz ‘bundle, beam'

We tend to think languages of different groups within the same family are so much more difficult to learn than languages of the same group until we try to learn a language that is actually from a different family

Sure, as a Portuguese speaker, it's harder to learn English than to learn Spanish, but it doesn't compare to trying to learn Inuktitut or Japanese, than you find out English and Spanish are actually more of less at the same level of difficulty

When you start studying Chinese or Tupi you think "dang, it's not enough to replace a word for another and change word order, I have to think about the world around me in a completely different way, I have to relearn from scratch what it means to speak a language"

Use of "vos" vs "tú" in Spanish and "você" vs "tu" in Portuguese in the Americas and Africa

These are second-person (usually informal) singular pronouns in Spanish and Portuguese. They translate to "you" in English.

Examples of voseo vs tuteo:

Vos comés. — Tú comes.

Lo hicimos para vos. — Lo

hicimos para ti.

Estoy con vos. — Estoy contigo.

vos sos — tú eres

AND

Examples of você vs tu:

Tu és franco --- Você é franco

Tu trabalhas muito --- você trabalha muito

Tu és brasileiro --- você é brasileiro

I'm Eli, also Eel or El, and im currently learning seven languages because its part of my special interest in flags and maps :)

In order of how well it's going, I'm learning French, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Arabic. I'm gonna use this blog to log my progress and use duolingo's advice on writing down what I remember after each lesson 🤓

Each day correlates to a different language, so each post will start with the day of the week, the language, and the date, (so eg Monday, arabic, 13/02/23) and then just what i remember from each lesson and any thoughts i have on it!

Its gonna be super fun for me at least, and anyone is welcome to follow even if you're just nosy about how duo teaches a language or, even better, if you want to add your own input on anything i might have wrong because I'm going into these with no input other than the green bird and maybe netflix subtitles/dubbing
