Terrible Fic Ideas #5: The White Princess, but make it GoT
I have a terrible weakness for female!Jon Snow fics - mostly because making the character female gives a fascinating array of opportunities to unite two rival claims to the Iron Throne and all the drama that involves. So what about a fic where the people with the strongest claim to the throne - female!Jon Snow and Robert Baratheon - end up married?
Hear me out:
Much as Elizabeth of York objectively had a better claim to the throne than her husband, Henry VII, a female!Jon Snow (called Joanna from here on out) would have the Targaryen bloodline claim but no chance of getting on the throne herself even if she wasn't presented to the world as her uncle's bastard. Westeros doesn't abide female rulers.
But if you marry her bloodline claim to the man with the next best claim - her second cousin once removed, Robert Baratheon, who's actually got the throne - you have the strongest of any possible claim. One which could make the greatest number of factions happy, if only they knew about it.
But how to make it happen? It's easy to imagine Robert trying to take Joanna to bed, as she resembles her mother a great deal, but how to make it a legal union? I see two options:
One: In the aftermath of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Robert heads north, sees 14 year old Joanna looking the image of his lost love, and pulls out some ancient Targaryen law that lets the king have two wives. No one is particularly thrilled with this idea except for Robert, but he's the king and the most optimistic hope it will turn down his whoring. Or,
Two: In the aftermath of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Robert heads north after Cersei has been found in the act of adultery while he was at war, and seeing Joanna the image of his lost love demands they marry on the spot. No one's particularly happy with this scenario either, but at least it's not bigamy.
Either way, Joanna ends up in Kings Landing as a/the Queen and because Robert is his usual lusty self, winds up with a son in short order. If it Cersei's still in the picture, there's a lot of politicking and worry for her life and that of her child. If Cersei's gone, there's still politicking but with whatever Lannisters remain upset her child is replacing their prince, who they claim is legitimate still.
Sometime while she's still a relatively young bride of 16 or 17, while she's about halfway through her second pregnancy, Robert dies like in the book, and Joanna ends up the regent to her young son, the new king. There's a regency council of course, but she has more power than one might think at first glance.
The truth of her ancestry is never really announced so much as quietly discovered by multiple parties in multiple ways, who quietly go along with it because it suits their needs/politics/etc. Eventually the various parties wonder why everyone else is going along with it too, and after some poking it just sort of... comes out. It doesn't change anything, because inheritance puts her son's claim before her own, but it helps the last of her detractors.
As a side plot, Prince Oberyn comes to Kings Landing to swear Dorne's allegiance to the new king on his brother's behalf and strikes up a flirtation with Joanna. At first that's all it is, especially as she's just about to birth her second child, but they end up forming an odd friendship. Joanna likes Dorne and how they treat their bastards, and Dorne likes her because they think her mother was one of theirs. After 2 or 3 years of this, they marry. It's part political - draws in Dorne, helps make up for Elia's murder, and gives Joanna and her son a loyal defender - and part a love match - they get along and Joanna begrudges Oberyn his paramours no more than she'd begrudged Robert.
That's all I really have, but the idea tickles me. So feel free to borrow it, just link me if you ever do anything with it.

Book Review: Macho Man: The Untamed, Unbelievable Life Of Randy Savage by Jon Finkel.
The Life of Randy Savage is the sensational, definitive biography of the WrestleMania headlining, Spider-Man fighting, Slim Jim snapping, minor league baseball playing American Randy Savage. Savage, a WWE wrestling hall of famer, was an A-list celebrity who sat atop the entertainment universe for much of the ’80s and ’90s. His outfits were as flamboyant as anything worn by Liberace, Elton John, or Prince. His charisma surpassed Hulk Hogan’s and is rivaled only by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and The Rock.
The story of probably one of the most name-checked and legendary wrestlers of that age, Macho Man here delivers an incredibly well-researched and well written biography of someone who always seemed so much larger than life, it's amazing you can fit him in these pages.
Starting with a fantastic grounding on how he became the man he is and then working through his career, Macho Man delivers a fantastic history of a man who really is such a large part of the era. I was too young to be able to enjoy this man's heyday when he was at his peak but this book made me wish I did and look up so many clips see if I could find any of these legendary moments as it takes you to the heart of the highlights of this man's career.
The interview near the beginning of the book with Lanny, his brother discussing how it feels to hear a whole arena boo your dad was such an interesting perspective too and added another dimension to the life of this man and the man's work - I think it's fascinating to have that insight of how it feels to be related to someone who at that point it must feel for a kid the whole world hates.
An in depth look into a great man's life, Macho Man is iconic and this book certainly highlights the work and the time he put in to make it happen with real research and sincerity that highlights just how much this author delves into the subject matter. I'd recommend this to anyone who has a passion wrestling for sure and the passion for wrestling is highlighted on every page.
(Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC for honest review).

Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Ansel Elgort, and Jamie Foxx in Baby Driver (Edgar Wright, 2017) Cast: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eiza González, Jon Bernthal, CJ Jones, Flea, Lanny Joon. Screenplay: Edgar Wright. Cinematography: Bill Pope. Production design: Marcus Rowland Film editing: Jonathan Amos, Paul Machliss. Music: Steven Price. As the old moralizing adage has it, anything worth doing is worth doing well. But what if something is not worth doing? Do we really need another car-chase-crammed, Tarantino-tinged, hyperviolent heist thriller? Even if it's as well done as Edgar Wright's Baby Driver? Is "it held my interest" enough? If so, Baby Driver held my interest because Wright created some intriguing characters and assigned them to first-rate actors like Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey. I could wish that they had been given more interesting things to do than commit crimes and try to kill one another off, or that we didn't have to sit through another insane demolition of bright shiny cars to find out who survives and how and why. I could wish for some backstory for Baby (né Miles) beyond the fact that he lost his bickering parents in a car crash and somehow wound up as driver for Doc (Space) and caregiver for a deaf-mute black man named Joseph (CJ Jones). I could wish that the romance of Baby (Elgort) and Debora (Lily James) didn't seem so formulaic -- you've got a handsome young leading man so he must have a pretty girlfriend, one who puts them in jeopardy. Or I could just sit back and enjoy the thing, especially the wittily chosen music track and the way Wright fits the action to the tunes: The film has a credited choreographer, Ryan Heffington, and since there are no traditional dance numbers it seems that he was hired to help the actors move to the music -- in fact, the whole film was inspired by Wright's work on music videos.

Arya was there, Jon was there, FCKNG DAENERYS & DROGON WERE THERE and she was killed by the fucking ceiling . i’m sorry but this is so sad to me , they RUINED Game Of Thrones in 5 episodes, there’s no character development, there’s no redemption, just pure bullshit 😔

Whenever I think of how disappointed I am with Season Seven Hells, I look back to this badly translated synopsis and all is good in the world again.
The founding heroes of the past, have become the victims of the power game. And they Shiguweihan, the warlords have been the sky, have overstepped the king. The sky a blood-red comet, indicates that the destruction and havoc come. Northern territory army and Lanny Lancaster strength confront each other, Langley, Langley territory, Xiongbing continuously toward the monarch else, and trends unknown Stan Nice, as well as the Northwest Black Sea. Above, the Iron Islands Zhu China, Night Watchman army guarding the Northern North out of the Great Wall, with foreign barbarians a life and death Dani Liz, the Mother of the Dragon, with the old and wear remnants of Calaca, following the trajectory of the comet though the vast prehistoric, marching toward the distant remote complex country great cause...(Season 1 Synopsis)
Seven hells. I dare you not to laugh. It took me some time to figure out who Xiongbing is. Sean Bean, I think. LOL. I still don’t know what ‘Shiguweihan’ represents tho.
(Image not mine but I had to save it in case of emergency like this and I’m tagging jonsa because we’ve been through so much fam).

Baby Driver (2017)
Director Edgar Wright gives us Baby (Ansel Elgort), a kid with a gift for getaway driving, a debt to pay, and a storming soundtrack playing in his ear. When Baby pays off his debt to bank robbery mastermind Doc (Kevin Spacey) he thinks he is free and clear of his life of crime, and looks to his new girlfriend Debora (Lily James). But things are not that simple, and Baby soon finds himself drawn back into the world of high stakes robbery even as he tries to escape it.
If you’ve heard anything about Baby Driver, (and you likely have by now, given that I’ve been laid low with a broken leg for the last three weeks), you will have heard that it’s cool. This is ostensibly true, but don’t think this is some kind of Tarantino or James Bond wannabe. Baby Driver is incredibly nerdy. That soundtrack you’ve heard so much about is clearly the product of some music tragic’s fantasy. The car choices are clearly the product of some car geek's great desire to finally see something plausible in a chase scene. Ansel Elgort dances around his apartment, lip-syncing to songs and making lunch for his deaf stepfather Joseph (CJ Jones) like a huge dork. The things you might see in a Tarrantino film are all here, car chases and music and compelling dialogue- but they are clearly the product of Wright’s determination to do such things right, and any cool that results is incidental.
And of course this approach makes Baby Driver unique and good and worth seeing. It's a tremendously fun heist movie filled with jokes and action and so forth. There's a crucially the characterisation is immensely strong, with the characters that surround Baby established as both plausibly motivated and generally terrible, and thus the stakes for Baby's escape from this world are themselves established, and the film evokes a strong sense of right and wrong. There's some generally great chemistry here between Elgort and James-helped no end by James's screen presence- and for the most part the film is engaging and fun.
There are a few niggles. The climax dragged significantly, and could likely have worked just as well with a bit of script editing (your mileage may vary on this, my girlfriend didn't have this problem at all). That strong sense of right and wrong means that some of the darker things Baby is driven to do jar a bit with what we've come to expect from the character (this is not helped by the glaringly obvious Chekhov's gun that foreshadows it). For all of Wright's earnestness there are a few painfully trite moments- Baby and Debora's meet cute and Baby's imaginings of their future together in particular. Regardless, these issues don't detract from a fun caper from a masterful player in the genre.
And the cars, the cars. If you've ever wanted to see smooth drifts in a car that makes sense for high-powered getaways, if you've ever wanted to see bank robbers steal a Corolla because why would there be a muscle car just there and good lord the cops look out for those anyway, if you've ever wanted to see a mobster in something other than a huge old American sedan, if you've ever wanted to see a reluctant getaway driver chose some comfy old land barge as their daily driver because why on earth would they want a sports car, Baby Driver is the film for you. There is of course the obligatory Fiat Chrylser product placement, but that Dodge Challenger Hellcat from the posters is only on screen for a few minutes. Design is generally strong otherwise, although Baby's rotary dial phone is a little on the nose.
The cast is generally strong. As noted before Lily James has a great screen presence and great chemistry with Ansel Elgort. Elgort himself pulls of the combination of expression and comic timing he needs to. Kevin Spacey is clearly having a great time as Doc. The unexpected standout is Jamie Foxx, who delivers a truly terrifying turn as the viscious criminal Bats. Look out for more from him as he transitions from leading man aspirations to character acting. CJ Jones is effective as Baby's stepfather is effective, which I only mention as I don't think I've seen a performance from a deaf actor before. Flea is in it.
Baby Driver is a fantastically entertaining caper, and one with a style derived from a great passion for doing things right. You should see it.
Tim
