Topdrawer, 140 N Larchmont Blvd, Los Angeles (Hancock Park), CA 90004
Tumblr media
Love Topdrawer for high quality, mostly Japanese school/office supplies and more. The items are attractively displayed – including pens, reading glasses, bento boxes, keychains, scissors, handkerchiefs, house slippers, socks, backpacks, pouches, greeting cards, photo albums, sunglasses, notebooks, wallets, incense holders, and more. The items look like they’re made to last.
Topdrawer is owned by a Japanese company, Itoya, maker of school supplies. The style is minimalist but more colorful than MUJI.
The merchandise doesn’t seem to change much and there isn’t that much variety. Service was very friendly. They have an online store.

I keep getting recommended some version of the same article praising Charlie Munger for having lived in the same house for 70 years, and quoting him as warning against buying mansions when you get successful and the effect that doing so would have on your kids to grow up in privilege and further advising against buying multiple homes.
And I was pretty certain he lived in Los Angeles, so I was immediately skeptical that he was living in some fucking modest home in Northridge for 70 years. A little bit of googling and I found an article that refers to his home in the 'Greater Wilshire' neighborhood.
...pretty sure that's just Hancock Park. Riiiiiight next to a country club and Larchmont Village and the Mayor's Mansion.
I assure you, his children did not have the misapprehension that they were anything other than loaded.

A mother has been arrested after allegedly abandoning her young child on the side of a California street.
Early Tuesday morning — in the middle of the night at 2.50am — a person walking in Larchmont Village in Central Los Angeles found a 3-year-old girl alone inside a stroller.
The youngster, found on the 100 block of North Larchmont Boulevard, was taken to hospital to be examined. She was found to be in good health.
The police searched the stroller and found an identification card belonging to Targie Alexandre, 24.
After this, police were able to locate the father of the child, but Ms Alexandre’s location was unknown.
"We’ve had a lot of resources devoted to this over the past day, from officers, detectives, we’ve had our bloodhounds out there," said Lt. Brian Churchill of the Los Angeles Police Department. "We’ve had no luck finding the mother so we’re asking for the public’s help right now."
However, Ms Alexandre was arrested on Wednesday night after police were waiting for her at her workplace, police said.
She has been charged with a felony of child endangerment and is being held on $105,000 bail.
Tumblr media
The felony punishment for child endangerment is up to six years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Earlier this year, a Georgia woman was arrested for the 2019 abandonment of her newborn baby after it was found alive in a plastic bag. The mother, Karima Jiwani, was charged with criminal intent to commit murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, aggravated assault and reckless abandonment.

The Villa | Rachel Hawkins | Published 2023 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
As kids, Emily and Chess were inseparable. But by their 30s, their bond has been strained by the demands of their adult lives. So when Chess suggests a girls trip to Italy, Emily jumps at the chance to reconnect with her best friend.
Villa Aestas in Orvieto is a high-end holiday home now, but in 1974, it was known as Villa Rosato, and rented for the summer by a notorious rockstar, Noel Gordon. In an attempt to reignite his creative spark, Noel invites up-and-coming musician, Pierce Sheldon, to join him, as well as Pierce's girlfriend, Mari and her stepsister, Lara. But he also sets in motion a chain of events that leads to Mari writing one of the greatest horror novels of all time, Lara composes a platinum album - and ends in Pierce's brutal murder.
As Emily digs into the villa's complicated history, she begins to think there might be more to the story of that fateful summer in 1974. That perhaps Pierce's murder wasn't just a tale of sex, drugs and rock and roll gone wrong, but that something more sinister might have occurred - and that there might be clues hidden in the now-iconic works that Mari and Lara left behind.
Yet the closer that Emily gets to the truth, the more tension she feels developing between her and Chess. As secrets from the past come to light, equally dangerous betrayals from the present also emerge - and it begins to look like the villa will claim another victim before the summer ends.
Emily is going through a rough transition period in her life. With a divorce from her husband, Matt, on the horizon, a mysterious illness nearly killing her without explanation and her some-what popular cozy mystery series, Petal Bloom, on the outs, she isn't sure how to move forward.
But when Chess, her best friends since girlhood, suggests that the two of them spend 6 weeks of their summer in Orvieto, an Italian village balancing on the rocks of Umbria, Emily jumps at the chance. A getaway could be exactly what she needs in order to begin writing her 10th Petal book, Emily agrees.
Emily arrives after Chess has, and the two of them begin their getaway with lots of wine and limoncello. While Chess seems to be getting through her writing with a fierce intensity, Emily is still struggling to get through her Petal Bloom book.
Instead, her interest is going somewhere entirely new to her. In 1973, a group of five individuals stayed in the very villa that she and Chess are now occupying, and it ended in the murder of one on-the-rise musician and the conviction of another. Rockstar Noel Gordon invited his lover, Lara Larchmont, along with her stepsister, Mari and her boyfriend, Pierce, to stay with him for that summer. Lara is eager to take him up on the offer, as is Mari, who believes that this is going to give Pierce the opportunity to get music written and flung, arms wide open, into the industry.
However, this isn't what happens at all. Their entire 6 week stay is fueled by drugs and alcohol, and even at one point, a threesome between Mari, Noel and Pierce. As was in the 70s, Pierce wanted an open relationship with his girlfriend, for which she agreed. She knew he wasn't a faithful man, but was always adamant that it never bothered her. But, her mental health was on the fritz after the death of her 9-month-old son, Billy, to a lung infection and she hasn't been quite the same since.
In addition to Noel, he has brought along his drug-dealer Johnnie, who takes quite a liking to Mari. He gives her sympathy on Billy's birthday that Pierce couldn't, and eventually, comes to know that despite promising not to do so again, Pierce and Lara ended up sleeping together again at some point, and she is now pregnant, unsure if the child is Noel's or Pierce's.
It was after this revelation that something occurred between Jonnie and Pierce thaat ended in his death and Johnnie's imprisonment and eventual suicide 6 months later.
The topic is new to Emily, but she begins writing with a fervor she never felt with her other novels. But when Chess sees what she is working on, albeit by snooping, she wants in on it, believing that this is more her forte than it is Emily's, but she quickly shoots it down, wanting to work on this adventure on her own without having Chess's name tainting any of it.
However, their trip is further tainted when Emily catches Chess in another lie; while visiting her at her home in Kiawah Island, Matt and Chess ended up sleeping together; but Chess explains that it wasn't what Emily is thinking. They never had an affair, and it was only that one time, despite her keeping him on a chain, leading him to believe that it could be more. Chess thoroughly believed that Emily's sickness was brought on by Matt; not by poisoning but simply because of his presence.
Ever since he left, Emily has begun feeling like her old self and she realizes that Chess is telling the truth.
The two of them invite Matt to come to Italy under the pretense that he and Chess are going to reveal their indiscretion to her together; but it turns out that they lured him there in order to kill him, and be able to get away with it. Which is exactly like what happened all those years ago at the villa between the group of 5. Emily had uncovered that it wasn't Johnnie who had murdered Pierce, but that it was Mari herself.
In the end, the two of them end up collaborating on the book and it is a huge hit, and we get a look into Mari's life. Nearing her 40s, she returns to the villa, the summer she ended up passing away, and reveals that Johnnie was actually responsible for Pierce's death, that she wrote it was her as fiction and a fantasy, though she didn't have anything to do with it; that she and Noel hadn't remained in touch or good friends after the events of that summer despite people thinking otherwise. But, while she wasn't directly involved in his death, she did nothing to help Pierce, only wanting to finish writing her book, which would become her one and only bestselling novel, titled Lilith Rising.

Levain Bakery, 227 N Larchmont Blvd, Los Angeles (Larchmont), CA 90004
Tumblr media
Levain was founded by two friends who sought to create the world’s best chocolate chip cookie. They started in NYC and have gradually expanded, recently opening their first location West of Chicago in LA’s Larchmont Village. Yay!
We visited the original location in NYC a few years ago. Like the NYC bakery, you can smell the freshly baked cookies before entering the shop. They sell a few types of giant, thick cookies (they’re 6 oz each), loaves of bread, brioche, loaf cake slices, scones, blueberry muffins, sticky buns, etc. There isn’t much variety to choose from (e.g., for scones, they only had one kind). Most people are there for the cookies. They also have a full espresso bar and serve LA’s Canyon Coffee.
Two chip chocolate chip cookie ($5): Served warm, the thick cookie has a crispy edges. It’s dense and chock full of small, melted chocolate chips. The texture is different from other cookies. I would argue that it’s much more like a scone than it is a cookie. The texture is crumbly like a moist scone. I like scones, so that’s not a bad thing. One cookie is very filling. Love how you can taste the dark chocolate and there's a crazy amount of chocolate chips.
The shop was cute – bright, with an open kitchen, some merch for sale. There was no place to sit inside but there was a bench outside. I was surprised by the large number of flies inside. Online ordering is available.
Cookies freeze well or you can keep them in an air-tight container for a week. I like them better the next day.
4.5 out of 5 stars.

Who owns the memorabilia on the walls of Village Pizzeria?
Almost every square inch of wall space at Village Pizzeria on Larchmont Boulevard is adorned with tchotchkes and photos that gives the Los Angeles slice shop its bicoastal feel. A 2000 Subway Series poster and Brennan and Carr bumper sticker show its founder grew up in New York. A “Made in Los Angeles” neon sign and a San Francisco 49ers banner highlight the state he calls home. Steve Cohen spent…
