I know Martyn's lore makes the Life series extra edgy for all the participants but I kinda like the idea that the watchers are really only messing with him. Like everyone else signs up for the games. They leave their main worlds (Hermitcraft, Empires, etc.) for a bit of silly fun and then know they will return back home after. Martyn doesn't know that everyone else just signs up for the games he thinks everyone else is thrown into them like he is. He doesn't realize that the watchers only pluck him up and throw him into the games. They do feed off the general energy of the games but really they are just there for Martyn's despair and the joy of knowing he thinks everyone is suffering alongside him but in reality it is only him. In the end everyone else goes back to their worlds but Martyn is just back in the data stream powerless to prevent the watchers from pulling him back into another death match.

So, this fanart has some story to it, so buckle up. It comes from a pattern I noticed in all the Life Series that I haven’t seen anyone point out. 

Every single series, Martyn is fully killed (killed on red) by the person who wins that season. In Double Life Pearl killed Cleo, which killed him. In Last Life, Scott killed him. 

Now Third Life is interesting. Grian didn’t kill Martyn. But in Martyn’s lore, it’s implied that Grian was not supposed to participate in Third Life. He wasn’t supposed to win. He was supposed to watch and cause more chaos and destruction. So, who is that last survivor after Grian? Scar. And who killed Martyn in Third Life? Scar did. 

I know everyone likes Jimmy’s “Canary in a Coal Mine” curse, but honestly, I think this is a much more interesting pattern. Whoever kills Martyn wins. He has to die for them to survive. Hence the name “The Scapegoat” curse. 

I wanted to make this post before the new life series came out, so I hope you enjoyed my theory. I might make some more tarot card themed fanart to go with more theories of mine, but who knows.

You've heard of cursed Jimmy. And you might have heard of cursed Grian BUT. Get ready for!!!

Cursed Martyn.

Allow me to explain. I've noticed this man always gets very close to winning the life series'- but ultimately fails.

And I've noticed you can almost pinpoint the exact moment when and why he fails:

He betrays his friends.

Third Life. (Ren) [this one is debatable bc I haven't actually watched this plathrough as of this writing so?]

Last Life. (Grian) [despite their previous close alliance in the southlands, Martyn turns on Grian the second he gets a chance- he would have killed him too, if Joel hadn't first.]

And Double Life. Martyn is the only one to outright kill his soulbound. AND IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. Kindof. [If he hadn't done that, they would've been a whole Life above Scott and Pearl. Ouch.]

So. What am I getting at here?

Cursed Trio.

(Watcher) Grian: cursed with knowledge. He remembers everything from every cycle. Every time. It's his own fault, really- he helped start these games. Maybe one day, you'll be a hero that can be happy, Achilles.

Jimmy: we all know this one. Canary in a coal mine. Cursed to always die first. Shoot for the sun, Icarus. You'll hit it every time.

And Martyn: cursed to always betray his friends in his moment of weakness. Getting so close to winning, only to fail at the last moment. Next time, right, Sisyphus?
