Comparing Mechs fans spotify wrapped with others shows us scientifically that we're something else

A friend of mine is in the top 0.05% of Sleeping At Last (almost 8mio monthly listeners) with 7.4k minutes

I'm just in the top 0.5% of the Mechanisms (36k monthly listeners) with 9.3k minutes

This means that you needed less minutes to be a way higher listener of an artist with 205 times as many listeners.

So there aren't many of us, but I can almost guarantee that not a single one of us is even remotely normal.

one of my favourite things in the world is when an album has a recurring motif of some kind, or when they directly call back to a song later on in the album. like. beating my fists against the pavement, weeping over it when albums do this. it's even better when the call back is to a previous album. wailing.

Current (mainstream) musical landscape is so depressing because so much of it is about meeting lagging attention spans where they are (sped up, less than 3 or even 2 minutes long, and remaining overly familiar by abusing samples, generic beats, dame vocal techniques) and things like album experiences are being abandoned, as popular acts stick to just singles or even just teasers for tracks for months at a time, knowing only the chorus will matter. knowing they just need a PART of a song to go viral.

And this is compounded by streaming culture and also how the charts work, where it’s more beneficial to release the same song with like five official remixes (one of them being a sped up version for tiktok, one-two of them just being tacked on features that add nothing to the song other than a new verse) than it is to have an album, a true era, or anything else.

And I know this frustration is easily abated by just… not listening to music vying for a place on billboard or whatever but I MISS radio hits that… actually hit. I miss pop STARS who are more than just background music for memes or whatever.

The western pop scene just feels like everyone has left the building in pursuit of clips. I have my complaints about other pop scenes and how they have also been tiktok-ified but like it’s so much more obvious in America rn. Like a few girlies from previous generations are lingering around to give full experiences but like… idk I’d take an album full of filler over these chronic-singles or like the half assed EPs that are like 7 2 minute songs and a remix tacked on top.
