#i also love having one of this chronic pain issues. that is very hard to be diagnosed because it is cyclical #*those #and mine is especially small given i tend to have 1-2 cycles a year predominantly falling around late august- january #when i brought it up to my doctor she essentially was like hmm that’s hard to deal with so no point getting any diagnosis 🤷‍♀️ #so thanks girl. but mine are very typical cluster. always on the right side of my face. the violent stabbing pain behind my eye #i also have the nice after cluster hangover headache tenderness that just fucking knocks me clean off my feet #rocking and counting tend to be my go to distractions. not that they do anything. but when it’s really bad i unfortunately tend to hit #myself for some fucking relief :s #oh also i get the classic wake up from a dead sleep clusters. and mine are reliably every two fucking hours :) #and usually i get anywhere from 1-8 a day during my cycle period. although 4-5 is pretty average for me #my last cycle was hell. my clusters were lasting upwards of an hour. that is really what i’m hoping to avoid this time around…. #sorry i just really needed to rant about this it fucking sucks. they don’t call them suicide headaches for nothing #cluster headaches

if you make it through a humanities PhD still thinking that the methodologies in your field have any sort of epistemic validity then you should get an award

#like. i'm a classical lit person who thinks that most ancient texts are essentially useless for reconstructing any sort of lived experience #which is not to say that i don't believe in the value of studying them as literature! but i've read so many articles that are like #'what can we learn about society in [x ancient time period and place] from [y text]' and my answer is almost always 'basically nothing' #if you want to try to understand any sort of non-elite lived experience in antiquity i think you have to go do archaeology #this particularly applies when dealing with imperial/late antique literature which i'm convinced is utterly inextricable from declamation #it's all rhetorical exercise and elite fantasy all the way down and that can be interesting but only when read on its own terms

seriously what is it about silver skates (2020) that makes it feel like something i grew up watching 20 times a year, not in a bad sense as if it’s unoriginal or reusing tropes but rather it has this inexplicable nostalgia factor, even though i objectively know i didn’t grow up watching anything like it, much less on repeat

Edo period types of hakama pants, fantastic chart by Edo-lover Nadeshico Rin. You can see here from left to right, top to bottom:

Fundomi hakama 踏込袴 - pants with a narrow bottom hem, a type of nobakama (see below)

Tattsuke hakama 裁付袴 - pants tight below the knee, sometimes refered as "ninja pants" (= Iga hakama). Those were worn by many, from samurai to servants and craftmen.

Umanoribakama 馬乗袴 - lit. "riding pants", wide hakama with high gusset split legs for confortable horse riding.

Nagabakama 長袴 - formal trailing hakama worn by samurai from late Muromachi era.

Andonbakama - skirt-like hakama worn by Meiji period female teachers and students (hence why it's sometimes called onna bakama). A boy version appeared after mid-Meiji.

Yamabakama 山袴 - daily-life work pants with narrow legs and sometimes a gathered bottom hem. Name greatly varies depending on areas and time. A direct descendant of this style are women's monpe もんぺ.

Nobakama 野袴 - shorter hakama with black velvet hem, worn by travelling samurai. It was also part of firefighters' gear.

Hirabakama 平袴 - the "classic" ankle lenght men hakama pants, with a low gusset which means it looks nice when sitting (tailoring is hence different from the umanori, see above). Also called hanbakama 半袴, those were longer than the ancient kobakama 小袴 and shorter than formal trailing nagabakama (see above).

Ranking Every 2023 Historical Drama on Costume Accuracy by Bernadette Banner :)

BB: Next up we have Season 2 Episode 3 of Good Omens which involves a flashback to Edinburgh, November the 10th 1827. So I was extremely impressed with this. The silhouettes are great, they've got those fantastic quintessential 1820s puffed shoulders on Crowley

this was a very high fashioned thing and a very sort of new fashion thing, it makes absolute sense that Crowley would be going for this really new sort of ostentatious fashion in men's wear and Aziraphale is sticking with the more classic great coat that's been around for a couple of decades by this point. They have absolutely committed to the men's hair of this period, the late 20s going into the 30s for men and women is just spectacular, it's a great period for hair, but they've got the fluff, they've got the sculpture, especially once again on Crowley who is just rolling with these outlandish fashion styles. Crowley I imagine would just slay the 1830s, I mean, we can already see he is going to. They've got the mutton chops. Love it! They've got the little M notch lapels which was a big thing during this period.

We've got fall front britches happening on Aziraphale we can see, which again is the period correct way to be closing of trousers at this point.

I love that they gave Crowley some slightly more period glasses for this period.

I do question where their corsets are, or at least for Crowley. Men's corsetry was a huge thing at this period - the ideal silhouette was for this nice like open rounded broad chest sliding into this tiny little waist for the men and high fashion men especially men that sort of subscribe to this very ostentatious high fashion for men - which Crowley is appearing to do in the show - would have been wearing a corset. I would have loved to see Crowley embracing that corseted look ,I absolutely believe he would have.
