Happy Ides of March.
Ever wondered why it’s <Et tu, Brute?> instead of <Et tu, Brutus?>
Do you know about the vocative case? It’s used when directly addressing someone (Like…. “Et tu, Brute?” But also, “Nobody asked, Alex.” or “Shut up, Heather”)
English doesn’t have anything special for it, but apparently in Latin you’d change the end of nouns, including proper nouns! A “-us” ending becomes “-e”
(Interesting enough, the Japanese よ particle is considered vocative case! Which I hadn’t thought of before but makes perfect sense.)

Can we un-dead-language-ify latin? Like can I learn Latin with my friends and then we make slang and now Latin is an alive language? Like technically? Just learn Latin and make slang & sayings and now there's new Latin sayings and slang and then bam! People are using Latin as a modern language it's not dead anymore!
Linguists let me know please

hey there! if you read my intro post, you should know that I am learning latin and if you are a person living in the 21st century, you should know that latin isn't exactly a common language. sure, it is sometimes described as a dead language, but doctors study corpses to learn about humans, doesn't it make sense to study a 'dead' language to learn about human culture? anyways to make my language learning more... fulfilling, i've decided to teach you all some latin phrases/words that are indirectly useful! (don't worry, I won't go over too much grammar for now :)
cogito ergo sum. : I think therefore I am
explanation:
cogito we can separate the term cognito into two sections: cogit-o. 'cogit' refers to 'think', and 'o' refers to 'I' (this is called person endings for a verb, 'o' refers to first person singular 'I')
ergo simply refers to 'therefore' or 'consequently' (there isn't much grammar in this haha
sum is like the verb to be. it refers to I am. (sum refers to both 'I' and 'am'! not just am

Here are the Latin cases, ranked from my favourite, to my least favourite. Probably belongs on r/unpopular opinion.
Favourite: vocative. OH MY GOD VOCATIVE IS THE SEXIEST CASE EVER. I remember when I had 0 Latin skill and learned from Duolingo. Duolingo would use the vocative case with no explanation. And I would be like "Huh, why is it Marce here and Marcus there?" (Duolingo sucks at explaining grammar) Anyways, ever since those days, I've always loved vocative. It just has an aura of sexiness.
Second favourite: accusative. I dunno, it just brings me joy. It's just so... cool. And I associate accusative with the color red. I dunno. Accusative just has an extra layer of swag.
Third favourite: nominative. What could ever go wrong with trusty dusty nominative? And the nominative is sometimes extra spicy. Like, um, rex or something. The nominative feels the sturdiest. It's great.
Fourth favourite: dative. Dative is chill. I associate it with the color blue.
Fifth favourite: genitive. Genitive is neutral for me. I don't care for it.
Least favourite: ablative. Ablative is... I don't really like it.
Extra: locative. Locative is okay.

Some Spicy Demonic Linguistics for Spooky Season
The word "succubus" (a seductive demon that bottoms) is an anglicized latin word meaning "one that lies beneath", and its counterpart "incubus" (a seductive demon that tops) means "one that lies on top".
Words like "incubate" and "incubation" come from the same root as "incubus", referring to how birds sit/lay on top of their eggs.
So, following those rules: if an incubus incubates, then a succubus succubates.
this also implies the existence of a third seductive demon, the "masturbus", that exclusively targets voyeurs.
thank you for coming to my ted talk
