as a mexican i can’t help but laugh at how wrong some americans writing mexican characters get the way our name system works so lemme explain so you can get it right!

so most mexicans (remarking MOST because i do mean 99% of us) have TWO last names that come from our parents. it's basically like this:

name / paternal last name (dad's first last name) / maternal last name (mum's first last name).

the first last name is ALWAYS the paternal last name, it always comes from the dad side of the family. there are some exceptions though. in 3 states of the country it's already legal to put the maternal last name first but it's very rare and usually only in special cases, like when the father is absent for example.

there are also cases where the person has only one last name but this is not only extremely rare but it can cause a lot of hardships with legal documentation like school, banks, etc. this can happen for some reasons:

1- they're the child of a single parent (however, to avoid the difficulties that come with having one single last name some end up being registered with the same last names as the parent, but inverted)

2- they were registered in another country where they only have one last name (for example USA, a friend of mine was registered there and for that reason they only have one last name in their documents)

it's important to mention that unlike american last names, the two last names are not separated by “-” they're only separated by a space.

the last names are not necessarily one word, some have two or three. for example last names like “de la rosa” or “del olmo”

also, there's no such thing as married name here. women don't change their last names nor mix them with their husbands last names.

as i am aware, last names tend to work like this in all latin america but many specific details may be different depending on the country and i am not that well informed.

“ vindica te tibi „ – and what we should learn from an old stoic like Seneca

if you have ever studied latin or philosophy, you will certainly have stumbled upon Seneca, a very problematic dude who, however, occasionally said the right things.

“ vindica te tibi „ is my all-time-favorite latin quote, it litterally means “ vindicate yourself for yourself „, but we can translate it better with “ take control of yourself „. in order to deeply understand this statement, let's take a look at stoic philosophy.

stoicism [ from latin stōicus and ancient greek Στωϊκός ( stōïkós ) ]: it’s a philosophy designed to make us more resilient, happier, more virtuous and more wise and – as a result – better people, better parents and better professionals. it is a philosophical and spiritual current with a rational (human rationality is the basis of everything), pantheistic (everything is God, God is everywere, the whole universe is God), deterministic (nothing happens by chance but everything is regulated by precise logical laws), and dogmatic (all that is, as being, is real and concrete) imprint, with a strong ethical and tendentially optimistic orientation. stoicism was founded in Athens around 300 bc by Zeno of Citium and later it was introduced to rome by Panaetius of Rhodes in the 2nd century bc. stoicism is a tool in the pursuit of self-mastery, perseverance, and wisdom: something one uses to live a great life, rather than some esoteric field of academic inquiry. Seneca was a stoic philosopher who lived in rome in the 1st century ad, and he wrote this quote in a letter addressed to Lucilus, a friend of his much younger than him, interested in philosophy and politics.

in this letter ( the first of his epistolary ) he deals with the theme of time and the brevity of life, a subject that he would often return to in many of his works. basically Seneca claims that life isn't actually that short, as the majority of people complain, we're just very good at waste our time beign slaves of something, instead of using it wisley. there are many ways people waste their time, he calls them " the busy ones ", those people who spend their energies on useless business and relationships, which lead neither to their personal growth nor to an economic, social or psychological advantage, just because they're used to it.

Seneca is saying that we are so used to wasting time, doing certain things just because we have been taught to do so, that we don't realize that we could do much more for ourselves and for our enviroment if we only knew how to use our time correctly.

" vindica te tibi " means that you have to take control of your time, because no one can give it back to you. your future depends on the investment in yourself and in your time, your future and who you are as a person is up to you. take control of yourself.

got loadds of things done this week!!

downloaded new app called 'structured', rly helping me manage time

did debate, speech was too long so i lost some scoring on that but did fine

went shopping and got a whiteboard!!

did rlly well in chem test, (95), got better at math (78) and got 85 on a bio prac, so im happy

my ex got 96 on chem (at least thats what he says)

im struggling to move on from him, despite trying to talk to others it feels like i dont want anyone else but him

have started gaining momentum with all the stuff i aimed to do this month (bit late but oh well)

made a bet w someone to buy me lunch if i beat him on the next math test, so that should be fun

we're moving onto poetry in latin now, i cant even understand normal texts and now they want me to analyse poetry im sobbing

To Fans of Nyo!Belarus...

To any of you who named him “Arlovskaya”, do you know how surnames work in Russian-speaking countries? Also, did you read the kitawiki? It never said “Arlovskaya”, it said “Arlofsky” or “Arlovski”. Although, Arlovski is a real person, and I’m pretty sure Natasha’s surname isn’t Arlofskaya with an f.

Can any Russians and Belarusians confirm if Natalya/Natallia is still relevant? Is it an outdated name or still going? I feel most of the characters have old people name.

Update: Wikipedia said the Belarusian spelling is feminine “Арлоўская” (Arlouskaya, Arloŭskaja, Arlowskaya) or masculine “Арлоўскі” (Arloŭski, Arlowski) but I know every Belarusians will write however they think is correct, because we all think differently according to the language we understand. You know that internet meme what language do bilinguals/polyglots think in? The better question is what language rules do they think in? Example, came across a name on a social media handle “Bitl” and I thought “wait, I thought your name is Zhuk?” Turns out, Zhuk means beatle. (Edit: I mispelt beetle)

PS. Why did people name Romania “Vlad” after Vlad Tepes then proceeded to name him “Vladimir” when that’s a Russian name and Vlad Tepes the Impaler’s full name is right there, “Vladislav”. How did we fail that one?????

i love reading shit in my second language in which i am not fluent. like do i know what all the words in this sentence mean? no. but do i know what the sentence means? basically, yeah. so it's all good. i'm not gonna be doing any amazing literary analysis here but i get the gist. i'm in the neighborhood. who needs to see the trees when i can see the forest? close enough.

#i just read the sentence 'Le soleil se leva pur et brillant‚ et les premiers rayons d'un rouge pourpre diaprèrent de leur rubis #les pointes écumeuses des vagues.'#here are the words i don't know:#pourpre. could this have something to do with purple??? it's definitely an adjective modifying the adjective rouge #diaprèrent. passé simple third person plural‚ so the subject is les premiers rayons. something about the rays of sunlight doing #something to the waves. to the tips of the waves?#rubis. has to be singular because leur is singular. unclear if the rubis has to do with the rayons or the points des vagues #because i don't know what diaprer means #écumeuses. adjective modifying points. my guess is it means frothy?#because when i see a word that starts with é i replace it with an s and that often gives a hint to the meaning #at least for me as an english speaker with some background in latin #scumeuses is reminiscent of scummy‚ which in an ocean context would be like the froth on the crests of waves #but okay the sentence is about the sun rising over the ocean and coloring the crests of the waves #maybe making them shine like rubies?#like that's what the sentence means. i get it. establishing shot. sun rising over the ocean. color is happening. classic.#okay i looked up the words and this is basically right. diaprer means to adorn with many colors #also ahaha i just looked up diaprer in my robert de poche and it's not even in there! just diapré and it's marked as literary #so i feel like i get a pass for that one lol #french #my posts #i'm now trying to figure out the etymology which has led me down this whole rabbit hole #this by the way is why i don't stop and look up every word i don't know. because it doesn't stop there! i end up surrounded by #my robert de poche my latin dictionary and a device with wordreference AND etymonline AND a french etymology site #all open at the same time and i'm just referring back and forth between them #and then i lose the thread of whatever i was supposed to be reading about in the first place #i do feel like it's cheating learning french as an english speaker because so much of our vocab comes from french #so i can really just guess half the time. pourpre and rubis? come on. if i was learning some totally unrelated language i wouldn't even #have a guess #this time i decided i'm only going to write down/look up a word if it keeps showing up over and over #i'm five chapters in and so far i've only written down 12 words! and i guessed the meaning of half of them
