Giocatrici di astragali The Astragali Players
This piece from Herculaneum (1st century AD) depicts Phoebe trying to pacify Latona and Niobe while two Niobids - Hilearia and Agle - play knucklebones, oblivious to their imminent doom. The information is derived from inscriptions made by the painter, Alexander of Athens.
Currently at the National Archaeological Museum, Naples.

Latone et les paysans by Gabriel Guay
Tumblr media
This 1877 painting by Gabriel Guay (1848–1923) depicts Latona, also known as Leto, an ancient Mediterranean Goddess of pre-Hellenic origin. She is portrayed holding two children, most likely Apollo and Artemis, other Mediterranean divinities, and greeting the working peasants.
In the stories told by Antoninus Liberalis a Greek mythographer, and Ovid, a Roman writer, Latona travels to Lycia, the land oftentimes attested as her country of belonging. There, she attempts to bathe the newborn children, Apollo and Artemis, who are most known to be twins following a later tradition but in early sources aren't born at the same time. When the Goddess is denied by the local peasants, she turns them into frogs. This art follows the famous story.

Hello good morning today we hit one of the very best lines of the entire metamorphoses!
Let me introduce you to the very first line of latin poetry I ever learned as a wide eyed twelve year old:
quamvis sint sub aqua, sub aqua maledicere temptant.
though they may be under water, even under the water they try to utter maledictions.
Met.VI. 376
Before the beginning of first year at high school, my entire gymnasium class got to go on a fieldtrip to one of those tacky open air bible museums where they had recreated settings from the new testament to get a taste of the ancient world. And that is how i learned my first line of ovid: under a columnade, in the shade, listening to my first latin teacher explain the roman school system and dictating it to us word for word.
Nostalgia aside, the reason it's so good IS because of the way it sounds: you'll notice it has some lovely repetition and alliteration and just scans really nicely.
But it gets even better when you remember that it's from the story of Latona and the frogs. Have you recited the verse out loud yet? Well, do it now, and let me spell it out for you: all the qua sounds in the verse make you sound exactly like croaking frogs! Meaning that the sound of the verse mimics the meaning of it, it's onomatopoeiaic! After the Lycian farmers have been turned into frogs, they keep trying to insult Latona in their new croaking voices, and the poet, while telling us this, is sounding it out!
Anyway that's why it's one of my favourites and I and my high school friends can still recite it from heart after nearly 15 years (oof). Hope this was informative!

Hey, your bio says that you “like talking about your favourite books but unfortunately no one knows about them” so I was wondering — what are your favourite books?
OMG thank you for your question! This is my first ever ask and receiving it from such a talented and nice person like you is a great honour! Also sorry it took me so long...
My favourite books are the 'Die Erben der Nacht' series (translated into english 'the heirs of the night') by Ulrike Schweikert. It's a german book series wich contains six books. They are historical fiction (1877-1883) mixed with Fantasy (it's about vampires, but there are also other magical creatures like werewolves). It deals with topics like coming of age, friendship and love.
There are well written characters with pretty impressive character development and the plot is also pretty good. It's basically about how the vampires get repressed and decide to teach their children together. The main characters are a group of young vampires from various clans who become friends and more later on... two of them have a pretty good rivals to lovers arc. They have to overcome various challenges through the years all leading to defeat the mega villain Dracula later on. There is also a suplot with an orphan girl who lives with her vampire hunting uncle that falls in love with one of the vampire teens. The books are filled with a lots of information about culture, science and society back then.
You also meet many famous people from that time. The most important one being Bram Stoker who is an important part of the Story. Not only adopts he the orphan girl when her uncle dies but he also helps defeating Dracula along with Doktor van Helsing the vampire hunter. The plot basically inspires him to write Dracula.
You also meet other people like Oscar Wilde or empress Sisi of Austria.
The four main vampires also befriend the phantom of the opera in the third book.
The books also deal with things like feminism and stuff like that
I recommend it for people that speak German (obviously) who are interested in vampires and history and don't look for a literally masterpiece, cause it really isn't. It's a great YA book and an easy and quick read.

Latona di Veio
This massive statue of the Mediterranean Goddess Latona, holding Apollo in Her hands, was found in the Etruscan city of Veio. In 2022, the statue was set up to restoration - a "much needed" one. The sculpture was found alongside statues of Apollo, Hercules, and Hermes - perhaps all parts of a singular compound scene at an ancient temple.
A legal company Carbonetti e Associati funded the project.
