Man Arrested for Brandishing Knife at Hotel

Wheeling Police arrested an individual Tuesday morning after they brandished a weapon. Around 9:15 a.m., police were called to the Springhill Suites in the 900 block of National Road for a report of a man inside being disorderly. The suspect was asked to leave the property by hotel staff, causing him to become agitated and threaten employees with a knife. After obtaining a description of the suspect, officers encountered him at the bottom of Anthoni Avenue, where they were able to quickly place 32-year-old Patrick James Ankrom under arrest. Police learned Ankrom had been in the Wheeling area for just a few days and had no fixed address, with a last known residence of Latrobe, Pa. Ankrom is charged with brandishing and was taken to the Northern Regional Jail by police. A cash only bond was set at $1,000. He also was wanted for an extraditable warrant in the state of Pennsylvania. Read the full article

I’ve drive along Latrobe Road through El Dorado and Amador Counties and have always imagined how beautiful it would be to hike back away from the road. And this past summer I finally learned that it was truly possible. The El Dorado Trail is about 30 miles long and runs from the county line all the way up to Placerville. Truly a gold country blessing. While it can be a little hard to find, once on the trail it is a journey of walking along the hills under oak trees and among grass. We only hiked seven miles round trip but there was so much to explore from seeing lots of cows to walking along the rail road tracks, visiting this part of gold country was a real treat.

Assignment for the week in my writing class: write a flash-fiction story based on the image, shown above, by street photographer Vivian Maier. Here’s what I came up with:

Ron Jr. only had to hit Cora one time before she was out the door. She threw some belongings into a battered suitcase, put Frances and baby Bean into the stroller, and commenced walking. She would go home to her mama if her mama were still alive. Mama put up with Cora’s stepdad Roy and his drunken roundhouse punches right up until the split-second she shot him in the head, a split-second followed by a life sentence (which, in Mama’s case, amounted to less than three years) in the Blair County Prison. Cora knew her mama would’ve been proud of her for not waiting around for her nose to get broken, ribs to get cracked, or worse, for Ron Jr. to take an angry fist to Frances or Bean.

After two days on the road, sleeping under the stars in shallow woods, sustained by mild early summer weather, the loaf of bread and jar of peach preserves she’d grabbed off the front porch on her way out, and the gas station restrooms where she refilled her plastic water jug, Cora caught a break. A truck driver gave them a ride to Latrobe, where several roadside billboards they passed advertised the Latrobe County Fair. The truck driver, a skinny, sad-eyed guy named Frank, was sweet to her and to the kids, who reminded him of his own. He didn’t ask questions. Cora was grateful. As it turned out, Frank was hauling the canvas for the tents that would be going up at the county fair.

“Where should I let y’all out?” Frank asked when they reached Latrobe. “You got family in the area?”

“No,” Cora said. “I’m just looking for work and a place for us to stay.”

“Why don’t you see if they can use you at the fair?” Frank asked. “I know the guy that runs it and he’s okay. Carnies are always getting soused and winding up under some train, or just taking off. I wouldn’t be surprised if they was short-handed.”

So Cora found herself working the ticket booth at the entrance to the midway. One of the owners asked if she could add and subtract. When she nodded yes, he told her to take the kids to the food tent for something to eat, and then, he’d show her where she’d be working. Ten cents an hour, plus room and board. Cora worried that Frances would get bored and start whining or Bean would fuss, but three hours in, things were going okay. Frances, weary of feeding her little brother, propped Bean’s bottle against the side of the stroller and played a sing-songy game on the step at the back of the ticket booth. Later that afternoon, when the line thinned to a trickle, Cora turned to her daughter.

“Fancy, are you missin’ your daddy?” she asked.

Frances, distracted by the sounds of the midway, took a long moment before looking up at her mother. “No,” she said, and, for the first time in a long, hard while, Cora smiled.

The music of Neil Diamond was the soundtrack of my childhood.

He was, and remains, my mom’s favorite. We would occasionally hear John Denver who she also liked, or the Oak Ridge Boys, who my dad liked, but more likely than not, when the record player was spinning, it was spinning Neil Diamond. His music has stuck with me over the years. Even after starting to develop my own musical tastes, listening to Neil was like going home. It still is.

I can’t help but think of mom, and our home in Latrobe when I hear songs like Solitary Man, Brooklyn Roads, Beautiful Noise, and countless others. And I do mean countless. Neil has released 34 studio albums and and has had 37 Top 40 hits.

But, as bound to happen, I started to develop my own musical tastes. I discovered Rush, and the rest is history. Rush led me to Pink Floyd, and Genesis. Genesis led me to Phil Collins, which led me to Billy Joel, and my musical tastes expanded from there. I try to find as much new music as possible. I even have a spreadsheet of new album releases that gets updated diligently every week.

So my top 3 was set. Rush. Pink Floyd. Genesis.

I had a top 3, but there was a casualty. I stopped to listening to Neil’s new music. Once I started listening to Rush, Floyd, and Genesis my experience with him was limited to anything released up until the late 80’s which was when I discovered Rush. Don’t get me wrong, Neil released an astonishing amount of music from the late 60s, to the late 80s, but I did myself a disservice by not exploring his new music when it came out.

My tastes expanded even more when I started to play guitar. My biggest “discovery” after starting to play was U2. I put that in quotes because I knew of U2, but they didn’t enter my list of favorites until I really dug into their catalog and started to obsess over sounding just like The Edge. Something that has served me well in playing worship music on Sundays.

My top 3 became a top 4. Rush. Pink Floyd. Genesis. U2.

I’ve never been able, even with all of the music that I’ve discovered, to make it a top 5. There have been a lot of artists that come close. Muse. John Mayer. SRV. Zeppelin. One Republic. Mumford & Sons. All amazing artists. All music that I love, but they’ve never made into that top tier.

Why though? Why couldn’t any of these amazing musicians crack that list.

I’ll answer that question after a slight diversion.

Over the past week or so, I’ve dug back into Neil’s catalog. And just like I mentioned, it was like going home. Hearing Shilo, Holly Holy, I Am…I Said, September Morn, America, and I’m Alive took me back to Latrobe, and to sitting in the living room listening to Neil. It felt normal, in a year where I desperately needed normal.

I not only listened to his older catalog, but, for the first time, I listened to the music of his that I never got into, and it has been like discovering him all over again.

There is some amazing music, some real gems in Neil’s album from the late 80’s up to 2014’s Melody Road. The albums produced by Rick Rubin (yes, the same Rick Rubin that has produced Jay-Z, The Beastie Boys, and Metallica) completely hold their own against some of the best, and well known work.

So, back to the question. Why have I never been able to put together a top 5?

After going back and listening to all of Neil’s music, the answer I keep coming back to, is that the original 3 was 4, and then the 4 was actually a top 5. Neil was always there. For whatever reason, I just didn’t admit it.

Is Neil my favorite artist of all time? No, I don’t think he is, that always going to be Rush. But I truly believe that I would not have become such a music fan if I wasn’t exposed to the music of Neil Diamond. If I had not become such a fan of music, I likely wouldn’t have stuck with the trombone, and gone to college for music. I likely wouldn’t have picked up a guitar. I wouldn’t have ended up a guitarist and worship leader.

Neil Diamond’s music planted the seed that grew into my love for music. And I have my mom to thank for that. Thank you mom.

The suburb of Milton boasts of many historical sites. The XXXX Brewery could be found there, built in 1878 and has since become a state icon. Communities within and around this suburb have gone used to the usually pungent smells coming from the brewery. Beer lovers would surely enjoy touring the brewery. An ordinary tour of XXXX Brewery could last more than an hour, by appointment. Visitors who come for the tour are treated with deluxe sampling of the popular Ale House Bar beer.

In the suburb could also be found the legendary Lang Park. The site is alive with numerous cafés and restaurants, plus a mock of Paris, France's landmark, the Eiffel Tower. People come to enjoy the Story Bridge Adventure Climb, the South Bank Parklands, and the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. The area is also teeming with many resort accommodations that are popular to tourists and vacationers from all over the world.
