Hi !! So I’ve always been interested in practicing Hoodoo and Voodoo but I was always really wary of it, most because a lot of black people still have that idea it’s evil and my mom would look at me crazy but I’m 18 and I’m finna do what I want and so I was wondering where should I start ?
Hi, I was literally in the same boat last year. They poured libations and started calling on ancestors at my aunts funeral and had this Good Christian Girl™️ shook.
Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about Voudou so I can’t really help you there, but I do know a lot about Hoodoo, so I’ll give you my best advice.
First, start talking to and getting to know your ancestors. When I first started praying to my ancestors I said a real simple prayer: “Dear Ancestors, thank you for everything that you have done for me. I love you and I miss you, and for those I’ve never met, I can’t wait to get to know you.”
That was it and that was all they needed to hear. I spent weeks talking to them and getting to know them. It might be hard or weird at first, (I know it was for me), but over time it gets easier and becomes second nature.
Second, is an ancestor altar. I know you said you mom is wary of Hoodoo. A lot of my family is the same way. The great thing about ancestor altars is that they can be as simple as a glass of water and a candle on your nightstand. I even know of a person who made an altar out of an old altoids tin and keeps it in the top drawer of their nightstand. And if that is even too much, you can forgo the altar until you’re in your own space. Your ancestors will understand.
Third, read up on Hoodoo. Hoodoo is a kind of oral tradition. There’s not a lot written about it. And a lot of the stuff that is written is written by gentrifiers or black people who support the colonization, gentrification and repackaging of Hoodoo. *cough, cough, Lucky Mojo*
I personally recommend Rootwork: Using the Folk Magick of Black America for Love, Money and Success by Tayannah Lee McQuiller and Mojo Workin’: The Old African American Hoodoo System by Katrina Hazzard-Donald.
There’s also a podcast that I LOVE to listen to called “A little Juju Podcast” by itsjujubae on instagram. It’s really great for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.
Fourth, follow some hoodoo practitioners. My favorites are @marvelsguantletkeeper, @heretic-knights, @lavenderlundi, @hoodoohunie, @witch-vomit, @unfriendlyblackwitch and @taankhsrealhoodoo
Fifth, take it slow. I know it’s new and exciting and you’re gonna wanna go out and buy candles, mason jars, oils, herbs, tarot cards etc, but it takes awhile to learn what you’re doing. Especially since there’s not a lot of resources out there and you’re coming from a background where Hoodoo is considered evil. So just take your time, get to know your ancestors and the rest will come.
I hope you found this helpful.
(Of course, anyone feel free to add on or correct anything I might’ve said wrong,)

@lavenderlundi I got people in my private messages giving me resources on veganism, what have I done? 😂😂
I have no problems with vegans or veganism, my problem is people acting like eating meat disqualifies you from being human or being a witch or spiritual or whatever bullshit.

Hello! Once you get this you have to answer with 5 things you like about yourself, publicly, the send this on to 10 of your favourite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is super cool!) :D Now, go brag about yourself cause you’re amazing. xX
Aww, this is so sweet!😀 Okay, so five things I like about myself, huh? I'll try to keep this not shallow as possible. 1) I like that I'm a really good listener. My friends like me because they can rant forever and I'll be there for them and I can provide input if they want it.2) I like that I'm a very cuddly person. If there's someone on the couch next to me, I will usually automatically snuggle up to them no matter who it is, including my friends and my parents.3) I'm great at keeping secrets. This probably stems from the fact that while I love hearing gossip, I feel really guilty about spreading it- hence, the keeping of secrets.4) I like that I'm a very individual person. I steer away from the bandwagon, and I'm always striving for originality in everything I do. I think it helps me stand out a bit.5) I'm a good-ish writer! At least, I am in my head. I often find myself thinking about situations I'm in how someone would write the situation. I have a wild imagination as well. Thanks so much for the ask, @lavenderlundi! ❤

The fact that literal medicine is growing in our backyards and they’re classified as “weeds” annoys me so fucking much.
Tumblr media
See this “weed”?
That’s Cuban Jute and it can be used to treat:
Fevers
Digestion issues
Headaches
Boils
Pimples
Rheumatism
Toothaches
Like whole ass MEDICINE!!! And I’m supposed to just mow it down😭
How about this “weed”
Tumblr media
Brazilian Vervain!! Fucking VERVAIN!
Tumblr media
HORSENETTLE!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that these are considered “weeds” upsets me to my very core.
(Yes I am aware that horsenettle is poisonous w/out the right precautions and that you can’t just EAT these plants outta the ground. The point of my post was to just point out that these plants have many medical properties that once properly identified, cleaned, and safely prepared can be used as home remedies.)
