Thinking about the final scene of of Kristin Lavransdatter: I. The Wreath again... The culminations of the glances we've seen of the relationship between Lavrans and Ragnfried. The way that their issues are the opposites of Kristin and Erlend's. The weight of their years of marriage and years of silence.
That single unveiled glance in which the hearts of bridegroom and bride had leapt together—the two young faces flushing up redly—to him it seemed a very shamelessness. It had been agony, a scorching pain to him, that this was his daughter. But the sight of those eyes would not leave him—and wildly and blindly he strove against the tearing away of the veil from something in his own heart, something that he had never owned was there, that he had guarded against his own wife when she sought for it.
and
When she tried to take his hand and kiss it, he snatched it away. But then he looked down at his wife, took one of her hands and laid it on his knee, and bowed his cold, stiffened face down upon it. And so they sat on, motionless, speaking no word more.
Hardest hitting scene in the book

Kristin Lavransdatter
As promised, let’s talk about Kristin. Kristin Lavransdatter is a saga written by Sigrid Undset in the 1920s. It comes in three parts, The Wreath, The Wife, and The Cross. I read it as a single novel, all 1125 pages of it, in the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition that was released in 2005. When we first meet Kristin, she is seven years old, the oldest daughter of Lavrans, a highly respected…

I MADE IT! All 21 members of the Preservation are done, all drawn and uploaded! :D
And here we have Argos “Voukólos” Lavran, the team's surveillor. Man of few words, he has special cameras that he can throw around and see everything all at once, coupled with integrated lasers that he can use at will. Fightin' and watchin' from outside the field!
And then we have the leader of the squad himself, August “Rechnyk” Cardof. Team's commando, front-liner, and an inspiration to his teammates all around. And he has cool as hecc shades, as well!

THE WINTHER FAMILY.
Tumblr media
Silver was born to Laurent and Katarina Winther, in a small estate outside of Bristol. Already then, the Winther name was big among merchants and politicians, even up in the aristocracy due to the work Laurent’s grandparents had done nearly hundred years earlier.
Laurent was born and raised English, but his family origin hailed from Scandinavia. He is named after his grandfather, Lavrans. Katarina was born in Poland to a rich Spanish merchant and his wife, origin unknown. This created even stronger ties for Laurent and earned him greater riches, raising him higher into the aristocracy.
To him his name was more important than anything. This also rewarded him with powerful rivals.
Silver came to the world late December 1687 as Jonathan Winther, one minute before his twin sister Emilia Winther. Neither child received much love from their parents, which was a belief to Laurent that love was unnecessary. Instead he raised his children in the cold, taught them to lie and scam. Everything to gain the upper hand in any situation, no matter the cost. Emilia was quick to become his favorite, whereas John rebelled against everything Laurent’s said. He was especially close with his sister despite that.
Solomon Winther came to the world early June 1699. He was a frail child who suffered from one illness to another, which rewarded him the nickname Little. He stubbornly fought on, however, of course with special attention from their mother who so far had cared little for both Jonathan and Emilia. John however loved his little brother and would sneak treats to the boy whenever he could.

It’s winter 1709, late January when the tragedy hits. One of the rivalling houses, a big enemy of Laurent arrives at night. With him he has his sons, a brutish family known for their violence and power. Laurent is the first to fall, strung up in the courtyard for show. John hides in a secret room in the kitchen where he watches his brother’s head gets crushed. His mother is run through several times by a blade. Then the house is put to the torch. He has no idea where Emilia is.
The moment an opening appears, he’s out. A dull knife in his hand which he uses to stab the remaining attacker in the neck, a wound that does end the man’s life after a while. Causing him to bleed to death.
John barely escapes. He climbs to the third floor and attempts to climb out of his sister’s room, takes a hard fall, before he aims for the woods. He can hear them behind him but takes no chances in stopping. The chase ends when he stumbles into a chasm, which he miraculously survives with only a few broken bones and a concussion.
He never has the time to mourn his family.
