for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal
before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"
and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"

College (uni??) AU catering to my own interests as it should always be hehe :)
#projecting my major on Vash because them mfs who have changed from the med field majors to that one have some tragic things to tell#and also because I think that Vash would be such a wonderful designer I don’t know why it’s a gut feeling#Nai the law major because of course he would have you seen the guy#he would be a personal injury lawyer because lore#fun fact Nai rested for a semester after the incident with Vash while Vash took two.He never told Nai he would be changing majors#so it was a big big shock for him. they fought again but yk I’ll explain more on that if anyone is interested#as to Kni and WW I thought it’d be funny if they shared a common subject that required a lot of team assignments#and they can NEVER work out together. being an absolute nightmare to the rest of their group#separately they are great to work with. even if Kni can come off as too bossy sometimes he is actually a great leader#and WW would always deliver things on time exactly as it was asked from him#but Kni and WW just never really matched. Kni was too rude at times when WW made a mistake and WW would always clock him if he passed a line#like insulting his reasons for wanting to study security#one day Kni tells him at the beginning of a new semester where they both have unfortunately landed on a shared subject again#“you are not suited for that sort of job Wolfwood. you should simply give up and why don’t you go play role model to your little kids’’#then WW beats him again and then is like hey yk what you’re kinda right. and changed majors and he feels so much more at home studying#education/teaching than security. he fucking hates some things but the end goal makes it worthy#Trigun Uni! The whole framing of Lestat as the sole symbol of patriarchy that fandom is so desperate to put him in doesn't work unless you deliberately ignore how he was also a victim of rape and abuse before he was turned. People want him to be fit into this strict role of "father figure/violent husband/perpetrator" that is only that and not even a whole person, and in doing so they need to push aside the fact that despite being his family's provider, he was also pushed into that role when his father forbid him from joining a monastery or gaining an education that he wanted. Lestat wanted to run away with a theater group as a kid, and actually managed to do so once Gabrielle gave him her blessing and monetary support in order to go to Paris. He didn't always want to be the provider, he was forced into that role and became despondent when he thought he would never get a chance to leave his home.
His new life prior to being turned is pretty much the antithesis to the whole "Lestat is a manly man who would sooner throw up than be compared to a woman" spiel: he lived with another man in Paris while also being an actor, having left his family and "responsibility" to them. The only family member he was ever close to was his mother, all the other male members shunned or ridiculed him. Add onto that the fact that his turning firmly placed him within the role of the damsel/victim: he's kidnapped from his bed by a stranger, taken into a tower and left to rot while being fed on for a week, before then being raped and violently turned all while never even being asked if he would consent to it in any normal circumstance. But you of course have to ignore all of this if you want him to only represent the aggressor/patriarch while Louis is the helpless unhappy matriarch of the family.
My issue isn't that I think Louis isn't a victim, it's that it's not unrealistic for Lestat to be an aggressor/abuser while also displaying traits that aren't regularly assigned to stereotypical depictions of male characters. He's abusive to Claudia while also having been a victim of abuse from his own family. He's not a good maker/teacher, but he also didn't even have one when he was turned. He's the provider/attempted protector of the family and seemed to like being that, while also having run away from his own family prior to this to act in a theater in Paris. He's a rich white man while also being obviously effeminate in public spaces, even to Tom's own bigoted humor.
Like Louis' own complicated story with being his family's benefactor and provider, you can't firmly place Lestat as being one thing or another in terms of gender ideals without deliberately ignoring parts about him that don't fit this. And I don't think it's an absolute necessity, when even in Louis' own story, Lestat isn't stripped of his effeminate mannerisms or behavior while also being the abusive maker/father/lover.

man okay so I used to play mechquest and dragonfable back in like, 2008 when I was a kid with very little patience to follow a storyline. coming back as an adult and finishing mechquest has absolutely slapped me silly with how deep and serious the story is in between all the absurdist humour. I have. so many emotions over the whole storyline, and especially so many thoughts about the unique form of tragedy that is The Reset.
You save the world but it's not the world anymore. You and your friends survive but you don't know each other anymore- have nothing left of the lives you fought to keep. You 'save' everything but it's still all gone. Everything you knew and loved, gone, and you don't even know what you've lost. You can't even keep the memory of what you had- and that's almost kinder compared to being one of the 3ish people who DO remember... and have to live around everyone else who doesn't, knowing their closest friends look at them and see a stranger, and that they may as well be because they aren't that person they remember being.
And to top it all off, that terrible sacrifice doesn't even end it. you're still left fighting impossible and devastating wars over and over. It's the tragedy of doomed time loops with extra layers of devastating all over the place. The GEARS University students being forced to become soldiers because they're all that's left to protect their homeworld. The horrors of the Shadowscythe virus taking over friends and loved ones you may be forced to put down to save yourself. The town of Falconreach burning over and over because no matter how hard they fight, it's never enough. The people like Sha'rae who sacrifice themselves to try and prevent tyrrany from seizing power, only for it to be utterly useless.
Anyway the brainrot is severe and especially dangerous since I'm coming into exam season and all my hyperfixated brain wants to do is chew on glass about these games.

Interesting to think about what each Vahki stun staff power implies about what the perceived social problems with each Metru were.
Bordakh (Ga-Metru)- Staffs of loyalty. Perhaps it was thought that Ga-Matoran, being typically quite sociable and forming very close friendships, might prioritize loyaty to their friends over the greater good of the city, and would not report a friend that they knew was engaged in suspicious or criminal behaviour.
Rorzakh (Onu-Metru)- Staffs of Presence. Perhaps Onu-Matoran were thought of as overly secretive, hiding away underground out of sight.
Nuurahk (Ta-Metru)- Staffs of Command. Ta-Matoran are known for their hotheadedness and tendency to be outspoken, these staffs were likely introduced to divert them away from whatever the were unproductively occupied with and back to whatever they were meant to be doing. Alternatively, they may have been developed with one very specific Ta-Metru resident, known for his "unscheduled vacations", in mind...
Zadahk (Po-Metru) Staffs of Suggestion. Like Ta-Matoran, Po-Matoran are famous for being stubborn, the Suggestion staffs being used to make them easier for their superiors to handle. (A key difference from the above is that the Nuurahk give commands to the Matoran directly, whereas Zadahk makes them obey other Matoran. Interesting...)
Vorzahk (Le-Metru) Staffs of Erasing. This one is really bizarre, since turning someone into a shambling but mostly harmless zombie does not seem conducive to maintaining peace, order and productivity, especially in an area already as chaotic as Le-Metru. One possible interpretation is that Le-Matoran were considered such troublemakers that it was thought that temporarily frying their higher brain functions when they put a foot out of line would result in less disruptions than allowing them to do whatever it was they were thinking of doing. The other possibility is that it was largely a deterrent, not intended to be used often, but the threat of such a punishment being enough to maintain order. If it's the latter, the fact that "shamblers" were supposedly a common sight in Le-Metru means that this plan failed spectacularly. Either the Vahki were overusing the staffs for minor transgressions, or a number of Le-Matoran were utterly unfazed by the threat of getting their heads scrambled. Maybe some of them even did it recreationally.
Keerakh (Ko-Metru) Staffs of Confusion. It is noted that the effect is considered more merciful than the Erasing staff by the Ko-Matoran. That's interesting in light of the fact that the idea for the Kralhi, their predecessor, reportedly came from Ko-Metru. So the idea of law enforcement robots in general was put forward by Ko-Matoran, and they may have had some input into the design of the Vahki and the choice of Stun staffs for each Metru. The choice of Presence power in Onu-metru is particularly telling, since if anyone thought the Onu-Matoran should be spied on, it would be the Ko-Matoran. Kind of understandable given the tendency for new mining tunnels to "accidentally" destabilize Knowledge towers. Interestingly, you would think Ko-Matoran would be among the most orderly groups and therefore least likely to get in trouble with the law, but dazed, confused Ko-Matoran wandering around after being zapped by Vahki suggests they have the exact same problem as Le-Metru. Either the Vahki are over-applying their power instead of taking more reasonable actions to get Matoran back to work... or Ko-Metru just has a LOT of stun-junkies...

i think its important to keep in mind that the new qsmp members, in character and most of the ccs, have only known each other for two days. at most they’ve spent a few hours together on the server. there hasn’t really been enough time for deep relationships to form, because the characters are just now meeting. let things evolve naturally

I am *looking* at that lawlu fae au, yell about it, please. I'd love to hear moar xd
YESS TYSM FOR ASKING!!! sorry for the late response, busy irl time for a little, BUT! i have been thinking about lawlu a lot recently (i’m just about done with watching through dressrosa, so, well, you get it), and i always think fae rules make for a fascinating story, so…
namely, this train of thought was inspired by this tumblr post which i think. encapsulates the lawlu dynamic pretty well. i mean, it’s not like luffy is trying to be owned by someone, but good luck getting any sort of handle on that guy even if he’s yours by the letter of the law. and traffy already has a few markers of being a good fae in canon (tricky as hell, hiding his real name, refusing to eat certain foods lol), so it fits!
and it’s like. imagine. you’re a fae. you know how the world works for you. there’s unspoken rules and unspoken conventions and unspoken hatred coursing through your blood. there’s someone you want to tear down from his post, but it’s not easy, not with the faerie court dynamics involved. you’ve been planning this for a long, long time. it may make you want to scream, but at least the schemes you lay out make sense.
and then, right. and then this human wanders into your domain, and eats your food, and shrugs when you tell him this means he cannot leave. and sure, he’s here now, it’s – fine, whatever, as long as he doesn’t get underfoot, so you leave him to his own devices and look away.
except, right.
except you find out very quickly that he gets underfoot.
a lot. in every way you can imagine, and some ways you can’t possibly. you’ve been raised to see humans as – not inferior, maybe, but certainly easy enough to control – but now you’re suddenly forced to confront the fact that this human had – just – not been raised with the same rules that you have ingrained into your very existence. he says he’s free, and that makes no sense, because you technically own him, what freedom is there in belonging to someone like you, but he– he doesn’t live by your standards. he doesn’t do what you ask. he breaks every rule, and stomps past every line you draw, and makes no sense, and–
and. so.
he had just not been raised with the same rules that all of your kind have ingrained into their very existence, you realise, suddenly. you’re pretty sure that doflamingo knows all about your tricks, and schemes, and traps.
you’re pretty sure, however, that doflamingo is not expecting a punch to the face.
and so, maybe having a human on your side isn’t that bad after all.
