Upon the news of learning that we're getting Disenchanted, I've been going down the rabbit hole of the first movie Enchanted (pun probably intended).

Once I did this, I noticed that the relationship, look, and vibe of Prince Edward and Nathaniel is pretty similar to Prince Naveen and Lawrence in The Princess and The Frog.

I mean, look at them and their energy.

OK sure, it's also that both the princes are charismatic and flirty while they have a overweight man following them around.

But it's not just that. It's also their roles as both Nathaniel and Lawrence are manipulated into aiding the main villain.

Nathaniel has to discreetly give Giselle the poison apple and Lawrence is tasked with transforming into Naveen to get the La Bouff fortune.

This leads to both of them becoming their respective film's secondary antagonist (I looked it up okay?)

However, the similarities pretty much stop there.

The fundamental difference between them is that Nathaniel actually breaks free of Queen Narissa's manipulation, recognizes he lacks self-worth and proceeds to write a book about it and heal from it. Meanwhile Lawrence actually is further manipulated by Facilier to allow his greed and poor treatment from Naveen to consume him which led him to getting arrested.

Idk, this is just a parallel I noticed. Also, maybe if Lawrence had a second chance and Naveen treated him better, maybe he'd become a slightly better person. (Maybe)

I guess another thing of note is that both Enchanted and Princess and The Frog flip a few tropes. Enchanted with love at first sight and living a happily ever after, while PaTF is more about working hard to achieve your heart's desire.

I don't know where I'm going with this, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

I'm so so hesitant to ever talk about Disney in a non-x reader sense, because y'all may find out I'm actually dumb on this subject, BUT- Tiana and Dr Facilier are one of my favourite Disney Villain-Heroine relationships. Why? They're not sexual or romantic with eachother like a lot of other duos (Meg and Hades, Jasmine and Jafar, Belle and Gaston, Esmerelda and Frollo, Nala and Scar- I could go on), like at all. Dr Facilier does not look at Tiana like prey- he looks at her like a genuine threat. Naveen was nothing, a naïve young Prince. And Lawrence was even easier to use, full of spite and bitterness.

But Tiana was like him. She's tough and she's been living in the same real world as he has been. They may have literally grown up in the same neighbourhood. Its possible he knew of her father, he knows of her mother, and she may not know a whole lot about him but she's heard the rumours and she's seen him slinking around town (She might even have served him a couple times?? So they were actually f a m i l i a r with eachother???) and she knows not to fuck with him.

They get eachother. And I gobble it up XD

Paula Lawrence

Naveen’s manager and assistant. It’s a weird mix, but it works for him. She practically manages all his life: his career, fame perks, bank account and personal agenda. Lawrence is the main reason he isn’t already squished under a murphy bed or something like that.

Thing is: Lawrence loathes Naveen. Why? He’s rich, entitled, an useless idiot and has everything she wants... including his radiant, sassy girlfriend. Too bad she gets to creep out Lottie everytime she tries to make something nice for her, but maybe one day she’ll notice all her efforts and, finally, pay attention to her.

shadow man is so aaravos coded. I LOVE DEAL WITH THE DEVIL CHARACTERS SO MUCH

i was trying to think of examples of deal with the devil characters in media, because ideally imo viravos interaction would occur again, but i’m struggling to think of another media example where a character regrets a deal with the devil and then decides to go back to it. in redemption, they usually pay the price of death or a loved one’s death from what i remember (ie: claudia)

one example i thought of was the shadow man from the princess and the frog. like how that lawrence, prince naveen’s servant, makes a deal with him, similarly to aaravos, he does help & offers power and fame and a greater role to someone who is oppressed and discriminated within that social system, which is a role both dark magic and aaravos himself plays. and the shadow man does serve lawrence & it actually doesn’t work out just because of the frog escaping and the main characters meddling, which is similar to rayla pushing viren off the cliff, once again dying in the devil’s service through no fault of his own. there’s a lot of parallels. also again the devil deal rejection trope where tiana rejects him and gets basically killed/told “you should have taken my deal” before things go well for her bc of plot/happy ending reasons which parallels aaravos’s “the sun will rise and you will not” interaction

also if anyone else has any additional thoughts or deal with the devil character parallels they want to add i would love to hear it 👀

An alternate take on "The Princess and the Frog" (2009)

Given that I've remade several Revival-Era films by now, it was only a matter of time that I remade the film that started it all (unless you're one of those fans who considers "Bolt" the start of the Revival Era). I wasn't the biggest fan of this film for musical and story reasons, so I hope you aren't too offended by my changes.

The film features more fantasy elements. I recall controversy about how voodoo was portrayed as magic rather than a religion, and to alleviate that, I think we should confirm that it's magic we're dealing with rather than a specific counterpart to a real-world concept. I'd definitely take inspiration from Alphonse Muca imagery. I do like the idea that magic is regarded as mystical and dangerous, explaining why Tiana steers away from it while Naveen is enamored by it.

2. Naveen's background and culture is more clearly defined. It was CONFIRMED when the film was released that Naveen's race is fictional since Maldonia is a fictional place, however many fans view him as being Indian. I noted in another post that they could've easily made him the prince of an Indian-inspired country (or a fictional Indian state) and educated in England, explaining the westernized fashion and interests--even though westernization was common in general around that time. Of course, if we go the "fictional location" route with the setting for the film rather than New Orleans, this isn't as much of an issue--but it'd still be a nice touch if it was an explicitly Indian-inspired fantastical kingdom, perhaps taking inspiration from Indian fantasy films.

3. Play the duality plotline: Naveen is cursed to be a frog during the night, and a human during the day, albeit forgetful of this. A big criticism people had was that the two leads of color were frogs for most of the film. What if this wasn't the case? Naveen appears to Tiana both as a vain frog and a hedonistic young man. Due to Dr. Facilier's curse, Naveen is unable to remember his froggy curse by day, and thus cannot go about solving it, and the night is filled with shadow monsters who hope to stop him from breaking the spell, with Lawrence and Dr. Facilier manipulating him during the day to make him marry Charlotte. Tiana takes pity on his frog form (not knowing that he's the prince), and unlocks his kindness and selflessness, and as time goes on, human Naveen becomes kinder, and finds himself thinking about Tiana until they share a kiss at Mardi Gras, where he marries her instead of marrying Lottie, like the villains planned. When Facilier tries to get revenge on Naveen, Tiana battles him and breaks his talisman in a similar fashion to the original. (I feel like there's some inspiration you can take from "Howl's Moving Castle" with the plot.)

4. Give Lawrence and Dr. Facilier more backstory. It's mentioned that Lawrence has been taken advantage of all his life, and it'd be ore powerful to see his villain arc if we knew how much pain he went through rather than simply seeing him as greedy and selfish from the start. Plus Facilier's magic is QUITE interesting, and something I'd love to know more about. Perhaps tying into the racial subplot, he had a life similar to Tiana and her family, only he couldn't achieve his dream and turned to the shadows. Some may consider this a sympathetic villain story, but I do think that Facilier's backstory in the original would've included some racial themes as well.

5. Make Ralphie older and give him more relevance. I do like the idea that Ralphie is close in age to Naveen (with Ralphie still being the younger brother), and they have a relationship similar to Dreamworks characters, ie Moses/Ramses, Sinbad/Proteus, and Miguel/Tulio. I do like the idea that while Naveen is selfish but somewhat innocent of the world, Ralphie is selfless but easily stressed and flustered. I picture him being a mix of Aladdin and Hercules. I love the idea that both he came to keep tabs on Naveen, and he and Naveen pursue Charlotte, though Ralphie actually develops feelings for her, and she reciprocates. Plus I do wish he had a different name, but that's just me.

6. Charlotte's friendship with Tiana is a bit more pronounced. Some people think that her selfless act for Tiana at the end of the movie was too little, too late, as they found her annoying and spoiled. I'd enjoy more moments where we get to see their friendship, ie after Lottie gives Tiana a makeover, she asks her what happened at the party (which Tiana apparently never told her about since Lottie mentions how they're both getting their wishes granted that night).

7. Embrace the green! I do want Tiana to enjoy wearing green without it being associated with her being a frog. The concept art has really great designs, and it could correlate to her growing to love Naveen--plus it'd make her a good contrast to Lottie, especially if it was Eudora making these dresses.

8. Alter the soundtrack and side characters slightly. Take "Never Knew I Needed" and make it an actual song for Tiana to sing! I'd also make Luis and make him a human (his story did feel like a racial allegory) while Ray would stay a firefly for his "Evangeline" story. Plus this could also make "When We're Human" a solo for Naveen. And maaaaybe make the "Down in New Orleans" a song for Tiana or an ensemble number. Plus a part of me wants Lottie to have a song (maybe with Ralphie).

9. Remove Mama Odie and give Eudora more credit. I say this since Mama Odie didn't really do much to move the plot along (her advice of kissing a princess didn't really matter since Naveen and Tiana get married anyway), and she gave Tiana a good amount of insight that she wasn't able to appreciate until later. Allowing her mother to be a bigger part of her story is BIG for a Disney princess, especially if Tiana is staying human and staying in town.

And note: I'm also cool with the plot taking place in a fictional, magical city inspired by New Orleans, similar to how "Frozen" was inspired by Scandanavia, "Raya and the Last Dragon" was inspired by Southeast Asia, and "Wish" was inspired by Iberia. It'd also allow for anachronisms (ie allowing Tiana to have natural hair at some point when black women in 1920s New Orleans may not have been able to embrace this).

Voiceplay Visuals: Friends On The Other Side

This was one I was ridiculously eager to get to, because it is an absolute visual treat!!! Layne and the rest of PattyCake Productions really went all out with this video, and I think that it might actually be the most movie-accurate video for a Disney cover that Voiceplay has ever done (and although some things are changed, it's all so amazingly cool that you don't care in the slightest!). Also J None came back for this one to take the lead as Dr Facilier! Heck yeah! Let's get into this! (Oh and nearly forgot to mention: this was uploaded in mid-October of 2021 and was Voiceplay's Halloween upload for the year).

We got Cesar as Prince Naveen (perfect casting btw) (also he looks a bit different without more of a beard, but I don't hate it), and Eli as Lawrence, Naveen's servant (also another Eli Eyebrow Raise! And a strong one, too!)

PattyCake Productions has their own YouTube channel where they create videos based around Disney movies and Disney characters (often writing original songs for them) and it shows. They really went off with the costuming and set design (better than Disney would do with a live-action version of their own, almost definitely)

(Also peep Geoff lurking in the background, which I don't think any reactor has noticed when watching the video)

A more full-body look at J's costume (and cool staff!), plus Geoff and Layne as voodoo spirits! (Also note how Geoff is, once more, the one with the most-exposed arms/shoulders (love that for him 👌)

Geoff was asked on a Patreon Q&A or something like that if the thumb-down-the-side-of-the-head movement had any meaning to it, but no, he just thought it up himself as a little interesting/spooky/cryptic gesture (I mean... it worked??)

(Also there's so much detail to his outfit and I love it! The subtle patterning on the vest! The things that may or may not be fingerless gloves! The metal boney-finger things hanging off the shoulders! All the things around his neck! (And yes, he's still wearing the necklace he wears all the time)

And shoutout to Layne, who as you can see in the photo above this one, is wearing basically just as much stuff around his neck as Geoff, and he's got a (fake of course) bone through his nose as well? (I know the official audio is all overdubbed anyway, but I wonder how hard it is to beatbox with something like that on/in your nose?)

Now this is goddamned clever. How do you split the vocal lines of a single character up between multiple vocalists while still making it make sense in-universe? Well in this case, you have Dr Facilier work some voodoo magic so that he and/or the spirits are singing through Lawrence and Naveen, kinda sorta possessing them! The video is enhancing the song itself!!!

I actually went and watched the original Friends On The Other Side scene on YouTube (which I haven't done in ages), so I could better make comparisons, including screencap comparisons!

Also I just realised that after "Naveen's" little "I got friends on the other side" solo, while "Facilier" is echoing it as he sits down, "Lawrence" is attempting to get "Naveen's" attention with his eyes, and making facial expressions/head movements that can basically be summed up as "Hey! We need to leave! Now!"

(Seriously it often pays to focus on different people when rewatching Voiceplay stuff (or in my case when scanning for interesting/screencap-worthy moments, to rewind specific parts to focus on different people))

There's a lot going on in this picture. And also this moment made more sense after I rewatched the original scene (just that Voiceplay are swapping out the amulet for a shrunken head (fair - it's probably a lot harder to find an amulet that bites 😂))

Firstly, nice bit of acting/visual storytelling from Eli and Cesar there, and secondly, hey that's the magic lamp from Aladdin in the background on the left there!

And I haven't talked about it a ton here, but J 100% understood the assignment when it came to playing Dr Facilier. He even did some of the same kinda dancing/moves as in the original scene, like the side-to-side head movement on "I hope you're satisfied" (it was so smooth!)

Prince Naveen was the best prince dude.

They could've made him into a generic charming asshole, but he wasn't. Yeah, he was kind of a snob, but he never intentionally hurt anybody. Not even Lawrence. He was just a chill guy in a beret who wanted to party with some 1920s hoes.

Something I love most avoid Dr. Facilier's song from The Princess and the Frog is how he does actually describe both of their futures, but differently in order to get his way.

He promises Lawrence he'll be a high, powerful man, and in the short term that's true when he pretends to act as Naveen. However, there was no mention about how permanent that would be.

On the other hand, he promises Naveen he has 'green' in his future. At first I though that was about being a frog and was a play on 'green', but it actually does mean wealth. It's just that Facilier was looking further into the future. Naveen helps Tiana with her resturaunt, and they make it successful.

So basically, Lawrence got his wish in the short term, and it was temporary and hollow. He got his wish quick, and in return he lost it just as fast. Naveen got his wish in the long term, by following one of the movie's main messages of 'hard work pays off". Neveen works ths resturaunt, and in return he gets the wealth he desired.
