shit, new redesigns AGAIN????
eh, at least i'm finally satisfied when it comes for the jump from comics to animation-
also i wanted to give it an edward gorey-esque shading, and yeah, I'm making the switch back to traditional when it comes to this one.
For wolf!Lawrence's thing, pets refer to headpetting.
(by the way, the last part of jekyll/hyde's thing doesn't mean to be insulting to any actual DID systems, i'm just saying that the original jekyll and hyde was never meant to be that, it was more like a physical "incognito mode" if anything, and saying it is a system contributes to the ableist "evil alter" stereotype)

I was planning on doing this on this coming Saturday, but then I realized that there’s a non-zero chance of getting at least one of these this week, so I figured I’d better do it sooner rather than later.
Also, in case it isn’t clear by now, I’m doing these 30% because it’s fun and I want to, and 70% because if/when they do happen, I can have this in writing and therefore have bragging rights.
KC’s Top 5 CR Player Character Classes Wishlist
(Note that this says “classes” and not “subclasses”. The options on the list should make it clear why, but also I Don’t Actually Know DnD That Well, and don’t have particularly strong opinions re: subclasses.)
Number 1. Literally Any Artificer. There’s been exactly 1 player character artificer in all of Critical Role, and that was Taryon way back in campaign 1. We only got him for 15 episodes, he rarely actually gets included as a member of Vox Machina (even though he absolutely is, dammit), and back then artificers were still Unearthed Arcana. I was SO sure that we’d be getting one in EXU: Calamity, but things didn’t work out that way. Also I just think they’re cool.
Number 2. Literally Any Ranger. Fun Fact: There have only been two player character rangers in all of Critical Role. Vex’ahlia in campaign 1, and Sam Riegel in Liam’s Quest parts 1 & 2. I know Rangers in 5e are Not Great, but there’s some really cool stuff depending on subclass choice. Swarmkeeper, Horizon Walker, Fey Wanderer – there’s so many really cool & creative options. It mostly just boggles my mind that there have been so few of them, across main campaigns and mini-series and one-shots, despite being a core 5e class.
Number 3. Monk (but not Way of the Four Elements). In a very similar vein, there have only been a handful of player character monks. Beau, Farriwen, and Fy’ra Rai are the only monk PCs in Exandria canon, two of which are genasi Way of the Four Elements monks and the other of whom is a homebrew subclass. The only others are Marisha in Liam’s Quest (no subclass given), The Headmistress in CelebriD&D and D&Deisel (no subclass given), and Mezzek in the goblins Pathfinder one-shot from way back when.
There are so many other cool monk subclasses to explore, and while I know that we just had a monk as a main campaign character, that hasn’t stopped them from having a barbarian and a rogue and at least one cleric in every main campaign party. Also Liam would rock Way of the Long Death or Way of Mercy, and you know it.
Number 4. Any Blood Hunter that isn’t Order of the Lycan. Have you figured out the theme of this top 5 yet? :p
But seriously. There have been six player character blood hunters so far, and five of them have been Order of the Lycan (Tova, Chetney, Portia, Benicio, Lawrence). Thank all the gods for Mollymauk Tealeaf for at least attempting to be an Order of the Ghostslayer. I certainly don’t begrudge Travis his manic pixie werewolf dreams, but some variety would be nice, y’know? I’d particularly like to see somebody play an Order of the Mutant, but I’d be fine with any of the other three subclasses.
Number 5. Lingering Soul. Very shortly after I started watching Critical Role, I found out about the plethora of homebrew stuff that Matt has up on DMs Guild. Of course, I purchased and read through all of it, and of course I immediately loved the Lingering Soul class/post-death option that he created. I know it’s a really tricky thing to try to work into a campaign, and it’s something that he’s barely talked about (pretty much everything else of his on DMG has been used by either a player character or an NPC). Right after Molly died in C2, Taliesin was asked on Talks Machina if he would bring him back as a Lingering Soul, but he chose not to. I just… really fucking wanna see someone play this it’s so fucking cool.
DIShonourable mention goes to yet another fucking fighter or rogue. Across campaigns, mini-series, and one-shots, there have been 23 rogue player characters and 19 fighters. I have no problem with either of them, but holy shit pick something else.

🖊 + Four!
I like the list format so let's a go!
Four's real name is Fenrir Lycan
Four was originally a Dr and then was retconned.
During the retcon, he was also named as Site Director of 515
He has the most kids out of any character I've ever made
This includes Ozzie (blood), The 61 Little Misters + Three, and Draven (step)
Despite having Animal Magnetism, it doesn't apply to fish most of the time
Four is easily the strongest O5, having literally not having shown more than 10% of his power
He is also older than Five, and she is over 538 years old!
Four has two more partners planned, both of whom have been named in the POI list
He is heavily integral to one of the Tempest-specific GOIs
He is the tallest O5, over 6 and a half feet tall as a human and over 13 feet in his werewolf form
I've contemplated giving him the voice of Nightmare Freddy/Nightmare for his Werewolf form
While a dog-person, Four has a soft spot for cats, particularly Galleon, Pyrite, and Josie
Four's true form and secrets are known only to a select few, including his partners and Eight.
If Eight had died, Four would have become evil after the death of his son, Ozzie.
Four is one of the few O5s to have a picrew made, but I personally don't like it
Four's favorite song is The Silkroad Ensemble: Arabian Waltz
Four is excellent at handling alcohol and makes his own wine at his Outpost
Four holds love very highly and regards it as something that shouldn't be messed with. He had an explosive reaction to Lawrence killing Ophelia.
Four is fluent in several languages, including English, Spanish, Russian, and Italian.

Lawrence Von Rhodes
This one went through a lot of iterations. Originally he was going to be a Blood Hunter who was formerly a part of a Lycan worshiping blood cult. The thing is that, while thematically very interesting, I’ve never actually liked being a blood hunter. I decided from their to tone it down as a Shifter Monk, however the party already HAD a shifter, and lycanthrope was very much her thing so I didn’t want to interfere with or insert myself into that. I still wanted the cult though, for him to view himself as a “monster” so I took a look at official races that appeared human enough, but with “monstrous” origins. That was how I settled on Kalashtar.  His first name Lawrence was something of an in-joke due to a prominent NPC in a previous campaign. The short version is every Lawrence we met always had something to do with a cult from then on.
Lawrence Van/Von Rhodes "Rhodey" - Kalashtar - Monk (Way of the Drunkard) -
Concept Notes:
Raised in a Lycan-worshipping blood cult.
Blood Hunter + Monk combination may be redundant and unnecessary. Alright for a one-shot but subpar long term.
Full Shifter Monk may be a better idea, albeit less visually dramatic.
Maybe Simic Hybrid instead?
Maybe instead a shifter who found peace in the way of a particular fighting style?
Drunkard with family problems who met a master that taught them a different path?
Dead wife?
Lotta rage about being a shifter? Father still Lawrence and a former Cultist.
Instead of Shifter, could be Simic-Hybrid or a Variant Human (With a trait that makes them seem more "unnatural"). Fallen Aasimar or Dhampir possibly if in a different campaign than Magic is Lost. Maybe Kalashtar?
Maybe don't make their first name Lawrence?
Backstory Concept 1 (Scrapped): Wife was a Fox Shifter, Mute due to damaged vocal cords, taught him martial arts and to be at peace with himself. Rhodey got drunk one night celebrating and accidentally outed them as shifters, which resulted in her murder. Been trying to drink himself to death ever since. Claims to be out to end the life of her killer, but really means himself. Pretends to be jovial. Used to think of himself as a Monster due to being a shifter, but changed because of her, but now thinks of himself as a monster for less visible reasons.
Backstory concept flow: Born into a cult. Deity/Being of worship left deliberately unnamed, and given an ambiguous title so DM can make them whatever. Children weren't allowed to know the name of their deity until a ceremony held on their 18th year. Was a true believer until that time. Children were split into groups. Got over-excited and snuck a peek when they were forbidden, discovering the 2nd group was sacrificing the 1st in a ritual. (He was in the first group.). Ran away from the cult, becoming disillusioned and a drunkard. If a race where abilities would have already manifested, considers himself a monster.
Encountered a mute woman by the name of Mikoto, who taught him martial arts and gave him hope. They eventually married. Got drunk one night, and his memory after that is a sanguine haze. Remembers things like the glint of metal, scent of iron, ambiguous things. Woke up covered in blood and Mikoto dead. Arrange details so it's not clear whether he or someone else killed her. Fell back into his alcoholic tendencies.
Cult Part. Remove Wife. Kalashtar Race, drunk because disillusionment with Cult + Monster memories. Martial Arts come from remembering how "it" moved, different than a human.
Possibly allow DM to pick whatever creature you're connected to, not just Quori.
Backstory Concept 2: TBD, but less over the top and dark.
Appearance: 5′9, average weight. Brown hair, blues eyes. Very handsome. Long flowing hair into a well groomed beard. Thick eyebrows. Lean but muscular build. Very basic clothes. Stained white shirt and pants.

Lycanthropy
What are the rules of werewolf transformation?
It can’t be that you transform when the full moon rises, because the geometry works out that the full moon rises exactly as the sun sets; you don’t see too many stories with werewolves running around while it’s still light out.
Does the curse only take effect when the subject sees the full moon?  A lot of movies imply that this is how it works, with the transformation only occurring after the clouds part dramatically, but this also can’t be right because then the subject would be able to avoid the curse by just staying inside all night. Just close the curtains and you’re fine.
And there’s no set rule for when the curse is lifted; again, the full moon sets when the sun rises, so does the subject stay transformed until dawn?  Like, the sky is getting light, the world is waking up, people are getting ready for work, someone’s dad goes on a morning jog to watch the sunrise, and there’s just a werewolf in the backyard?
There has to be a window for the transformation, it has to take effect only at night, but even that is subjective.  That depends on your latitude, your altitude, and what time of year it is.  There’s no hard border between day and night, just a subtle gradient; day, civil twilight, nautical twilight, astronomical twilight, then night proper (and the reverse for daybreak).
Lycanthropy is part of old European folklore, with some origins pointing even as far back as Ancient Rome (Romulus and Remus were raised by wolves), so it stands to reason that the curse isn’t backed by hard science but folk wisdom/intuition.  My theory is that whichever entity cast the curse made an arbitrary decision, like it takes effect when the moon is highest in the sky (around midnight-ish), and ends around the start of twilight just as the sky is getting lighter.  Subjects suffer, on average, about five hours of actual lycanthropy each month.  It’s definitely not the 12-hour curse some people think it is; that said, as a European curse, it is important to remember that the more north you go, the longer nights are during winter, and the shorter they are during summer.

As soon as the lights came on, they got a better view of the wolf man in front of them. He was… /long/. But not as long/tall as Lawrence. “See, Lawrence? He’s alright.” Sam would reassure their friend, offering him a small smile.
Lawrence slowly sat himself down next to Sam, a pout on his face. “He is usually much more aggressive…I’m guessing something happened…unless Julian messed with him and got him all riled up.”
Richie laid his head back, slowly rolling himself on to his back just to stretch out some more. He was almost seven feet, with the hind leg joints, but overall still quite small for a lycan.

it’s official. nightmarish is coming back with several changes (which i hope will be appreciated). new designs. new stories. new humor.
new info about each character under the cut.
King Axel Horsmann Age: 345 Full Description: A hessian trooper killed in the Revolutionary War and reincarnated into a Dullahan, he was crowned the King of Nightmaria by retired ruler Hades and officially the master of the castle. He is caring for the other residents but he’s a bit crazy. Axel loves his unicorn ghoul Rainblood, who was once the horse he rode during his battles, and would go berserk if anyone were to hurt her. He mostly hangs out with Aziza, who’s practically his roommate. Based on: The Headless Horseman.
Aziza Age: 2897 Full Description: An athletic and confident mummy who is the Queen of Nightmaria. Formerly an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, she just wants to live her life in and adjust to the modern times Nightmaria like a mortal human would, but finds herself contributing to the antics of the rest of the Nightmarish 9. However, she can’t help but find fun in it like the others, as she does have to remind herself, “This is better”. Based on: The Mummy.
Vladimir “Drac” Dracula Age: 665 Full Description: Once a fearsome warrior, this count used dark magic to turn himself into a powerful vampire after death. He moved to Nightmaria after his old castle in Transylvania was destroyed by a small mob of vampire hating humans and was taken in by the king, and is now the royal advisor. He can shapeshift into different creatures, is destructive and crude, loves video games and fighting, and, while vampires do indeed have to consume blood and flesh, he is practically addicted to it. Based on: Dracula.
Project F/VF-01 “Scrap” Frankenstein Age: 297 Full Description:  An intelligent creature that was an attempt to make a new species. They are a creative seamstress along with their pet mothman and spider/bat hybrids, are often apprehended by phone calls from their slightly overbearing creator, Victor Frankenstein himself (who's trying to make up for what he's done when he was alive, but Scrap is much less than forgiving) f, serve as the royal guard in Horsmann Castle, and the Nightmarish 9’s voice of reason who’s seen just about everything. Due to being shunned in Germany and brutally experimented on by researchers in England because of their appearance when they were younger, they’re a gloomy person in general, have a rather cynical outlook on life, and even suffer from PTSD. They can also communicate with animals. Based on: Frankenstein’s Monster.
Erik “DJ Phantom” Aria Age: 132 Full Description: A rather hyper and very odd ghost who was born with a severe facial deformity and wears a white mask that hides it, he is very melodramatic and prone to fainting. Abandoned by their mother as a child, they were featured in a freakshow (lets just say he didn’t like it very much) and escaped to the darker parts of an opera theater. Dying at a young age, he became from a Phantom in name only to an actual Phantom, and was offered to be the butler of Nightmaria’s royal staff due to devices and contraptions they had made and also now works as a DJ. He’s a huge fan of different types of music, acts rather immature, and can get… clingy sometimes. Based on: The Phantom of the Opera.
Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde Age: 159 Full Description: Dr. Jekyll is a very shy creature who works as the royal scientist and is very polite, if not a bit self-centered. Formerly human, he had used a potion to finally help him release his darker thoughts in the form of a more powerful being, which stayed with him long after his death. Resurrected into a shadow spirit after spending years in purgatory, he now has the ability to shift to Edward Hyde when he feels mischievous, angry, lustful, consumes caffeinated drinks, or somehow just feels like it. As Hyde, he enjoys mischief, destruction, pranks, junk food, and slacking off. While Jekyll and Hyde are prone to shifting between one or the other, they are also able to communicate by sharing a body CatDog style and often tease and insult each other, sharing a strong rivalry. Based on: Dr. Henry Jekyll/Mr. Edward Hyde. (duh…?)
Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale Age: 2268 Full Description: Three gorgon triplets, in which here are large snakes with arms and writhing, almost living hair. Medusa, the green viper-like gorgon, is the stoic, chill, and rather dimwitted leader. Stheno, the red cobra-like gorgon, is hotblooded (ironically) and protective. Euryale, the blue rattlesnake-like gorgon, is gloomy and paranoid, though tries to be the voice of reason. What all three have in common is that they pride in their supposed "ugliness" and don't care at all about romance. After a traumatic encounter with Poseidon, Medusa, along with her sisters, were given a power used to defend themselves the best way possible. Similar to the gorgon myth, those who look at their eyes, hidden by their hair, sunglasses, and hat, turn into stone for as long as the gorgons want them to be stone. They live in the castle’s dungeons as the wardens. The sisters often make random wisecracking lines and the like, but are also prone to causing a lot of trouble. Based on: Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale. (kinda obvious)
Lawrence Lycan Age: 103 Full Description: An effeminate zombie with therianthropy, meaning he can shift into a specific animal (wolf, to be exact) and back again, (making him a werebeast, or, more specifically, a werewolf) who lives in the castle gardens. His father gained therianthropic abilities after a blood transfusion, while he himself was born with them. Lawrence loves his wolf form to the point he stays in it often unless he absolutely has to be a man. He was shot to death by a wolf hunter in Wales when he was in his 20’s, and so became undead as well. Lawrence was later offered to work as the gardener and caretaker to the yards of Nightmaria’s castle. Sometimes, canine instinct will take over him once in a while, which is not really all that great when you’re trying to tend to plants. Based on: The Wolfman.
Gill Age: 107 Full Description: A river demigod who serves as the royal chef. While a majority of the characters are loony one way or another, he probably has the most outlandish personality of them all and is the bravest. He’s also quite a romantic, and was a big ladies man back in the Amazons and is an even bigger one on Nightmaria. Based on: The Gill-Man/Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Full Moon Rising: Beware of the Big Bad Werewolf
Tumblr media
Source: BBC News
Alongside vampires and zombies, werewolves have long been a part of everyone's favorite "things that go bump in the night." Werewolves have been stalking us in our nightmares (or dreams - however you like it) from the 1941 film "The Wolf Man" to 80's classics "The Howling" and "American Werewolf in London" to the Underworld series of the 2000's and beyond. Werewolf stories have evolved over the years from 1941's tortured Lawrence Talbot to rebellious, proud lycan Lucien in the Underworld series. Werewolves have carved their own niche in fiction, film and TV. What inspired tales of humans who morph into animals by the light of the full moon?
The first image of a human becoming a wolf is in the oldest known work of literature, The Epic of Gilgamesh, which dates back to 1800 B.C.E. in ancient Mesopotamia. Gilgamesh rejects a woman after finding out that she turned her former lover into a wolf. An ancient Greek myth, The Legend of Lycaon, tells the story of how Zeus turns Lycaon into a wolf after Lycaon serves him a meal made from the remains of a sacrificed boy. The Saga of Volsungs is a Nordic folktale about magical wolf pelts that can turn anyone wearing them into a wolf for 10 days. In the story, a father and son find the pelts and go on a woodland killing spree, which ends with a brutal fight between the two. The father dies and leaves behind a leaf with healing properties which the son uses to recover from his injuries.
Traditional folklore dictates that a human becomes a werewolf by being bitten by a werewolf, can only change during the full moon and can only be killed by a silver bullet. Over the centuries, folklore has provided many other ways a person could become a werewolf: sleeping outside during a full moon on a Friday, eating a combination of wolf and human meat, a witch's curse, being conceived during a new moon, drinking water touched by a wolf and eating certain herbs.
Many people associate the moon with werewolves. The origin of the belief that the full moon can cause all sorts of chaos is unknown. After being reinforced over the years, this belief has created an expectation of nothing but trouble during a full moon.

There were, however, several cures for werewolves to rid themselves of their affliction. Some cures recommended by medieval medical practitioners included surgery, vomiting, drinking vinegar and bloodletting. Sometimes, these cures were the exact opposite, leading to the death of a patient. The alternatives to medicinal cures were an exorcism or a silver bullet.
Any being that's part of folklore has had gained fame or notoriety with a real person or event. Sightings and encounters with all sorts of beings have been reported throughout the ages such as vampires, sasquatch, fairies and lake monsters. The history of werewolves includes many cases of people who claimed to be werewolves.
In 14th century Germany, Peter Stubbe, a wealthy farmer, claimed that he owned a magical belt that turned him into a wolf and that, in wolf form, he had killed several people. There was a group of hunters who claimed that they saw him change from wolf to human. Stubbe confessed to 12 murders that were allegedly committed over a period of 25 years. Stubbe made his confession after being subjected to brutal torture. There was no evidence of any murders having committed by Stubbe.
In an odd little twist, Stubbe was executed on Halloween in 1589. He was beheaded, then burned at the stake. Belief in werewolves was common during the middle ages. The consensus was that werewolves were created by a witch's curse.
Three other confessed werewolves would meet the same fate. During the same time period in France, Giles Garnier, Michel Verdun and Pierre Burgot, in three separate cases, all claimed that they had an ointment that turned them into wolves, causing them to kill and devour children. They were all burned at the stake.
Let's return to Germany, home of the infamous Peter Stubbe. During the 18th century, a young boy was found in the woods exhibiting animalistic behavior. Dubbed "Peter the Wild Boy," he was unable to speak, walked on all fours and ate with his hands. The general consensus was that he was either a werewolf or raised by wolves.
"Peter" was eventually adopted as a "pet" by the courts of King George I and King George II. Current medical knowledge has been applied to Peter's case. Most likely, he suffered from Pitt-Hopkins syndrome, which was discovered in 1978. Pitt-Hopkins syndrome impairs speech, intellect, the respiratory system and can cause seizures and also affect facial features.

Many other conditions both physiological and psychological have contributed to the werewolf myth. Hypertrichosis is a rare genetic disorder that causes hair growth to the extent of giving a human being a wolf-like appearance. Lycanthropy is a rare psychological disorder which causes a person to have delusions of changing into an animal. Rabies has also been mentioned as a possible culprit contributing to werewolf folklore as well as food poisoning and hallucinogenic herbs (perhaps ingredients in a "werewolf" ointment).
The mention of food poisoning and hallucinogens makes me think of the theory that ergot poisoning led to the infamous 18th century witch hysteria in Salem, Massachusetts, which led to the execution of several alleged "witches." Ergot poisoning is caused by fungus that grows on rye as well as other types of cereals. In 1976, Linnda Caporael presented the argument that many of the characteristics exhibited by those who were described as "bewitched" in records of the trials, matched the symptoms of ergot poisoning (hallucinations, muscle contractions, psychosis, etc.). Besides an abundance of rye in the area, the climate would've caused conditions that could've produced the fungus.
Eating bread produced by tainted wheat may have caused mass witch hysteria in Salem. Food poisoning could have also created werewolves.
From the myths of ancient civilizations to contemporary pop culture, werewolves have captured our imaginations in many ways. Whether we love to hate them, hate to love them or long to embrace them, werewolves and other shape-shifters will continue to fascinate the dark side of the human imagination for many years to come.
