Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 / Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Bonus (18+)
---------------
A/N: I just passed my exam and finished yet another part of Shadows Entwined!🤩💙 It’s not super long this time. Due to my exam I decided to cut it a little short this time around, but I hope it’s still enjoyable😘💙
---------------
Warnings: None💙
The reader and the turtles are 19.
---------------
That day, all up on till the sun disappeared below the horizon, was relatively uneventful. While the sun stood in the sky, the turtles slept away in their rooms, while you, Damian and Barbara stayed in the Batcave with Alfred, keeping an eye on Bruce, and working away, trying to figure out where Ra’s al Ghul and Shredder was hiding out, and the much more pressing question; what were they working on? Why were the two villains working together?
You, Barbara and Damian had all decided to stay in costume, just in case any of the four terrapins would wake up. But as you pulled on your mask in your room, you couldn’t help but feel a rush in your stomach at the thought of the night before. What Leo had said about your face made you smile like crazy, and the thought of how close you had been to… how close you had been to kiss Leo made you gitty. Of course you couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if you had kissed, finding yourself daydreaming on your way down to the Batcave with a small skip in your step, thinking of how Leo’s lips would have felt against yours.
But then the sobering reality hit you as soon as you entered the Batcave, the sight of your still unconscious father reminding you of all the other things that happened the night before. The towering gothic halls of Arkham. How terrified you had been while Leo had been under the influence of the Crane Gass, unable to do anything as he seemed terrified that you wouldn’t look him in the eyes, even though you had never said such a thing. And how your father, the dark knight, was turned into a mutant bat before your very eyes. Suddenly your little daydream about the almost kiss with Leo wasn’t the only thing on your mind.
It was around dinner time that the turtles woke up. At that point the dark had already fallen over Gotham, the sun being hidden behind a thick layer of dark clouds, the city rarely having more than a few hours of life during the day.
Sitting down next to Leo as you ate, your heart couldn’t help but flutter at the small smile he shot at you, his blue eyes twinkling a little as they searched for yours. It was clear that he also remembered the night before, both the good and the bad parts, seeming a little unsure if he was still in your good grace. But the smile you sent back at him, made him relax with a silent sigh, finally letting him eat without his heart jumping like mad.
After dinner, all of you went straight back to work, looking through any possible leads on where Ra’s and Shredder could be, while Alfred continued his care of Bruce, in the company of a worrisome Robin and a curious yet slightly scared Mikey. And then, lo and behold, Batgirl struck gold, showing you all her findings on the big screen of the computer.
“The Wayne Enterprises’ container ship that was moving the Cloud Seeder to Bludhaven, was hijacked last night”, Batgirl explained, reading up from her findings. “The thieves then smuggled the Cloud Seeder back into Gotham port”.
Raph grumbled with his arms crossed and his teeth clenched. “While we were dealing with those freaks in Arkham”. He was right. Arkham had been nothing but a distraction.
Donatello, who was seated in the chair right in front of the big computer, looked at the screen in thought, a finger tapping on his chin, before he seemed to have a realization, tapping away on the keys.
“With the machinery the Foot has stolen, I think they’re building something that’ll mix the ooze with Joker’s formula, and launch the Joker-ised ooze into the clouds above the city”, he said, pulling up pictures of the machinery for you all to see.
“And when it rains down, it’ll turn everyone in Gotham into a monster mutant like Batman”, Leo said, dreading in his voice. Having fought against mutant Batman was one thing, but a whole city? And not just any city, but your city. Yet another reason for Leo to hate everything the Foot and Shredder stood for.
“Dudes!”, Mikey yelled in eagerness from Batman’s table, causing all of you to turn, fearing the worst. Even Robin jumped from his chair, seemingly ready to fight whatever threat Mikey had seen. But there was no threat. Just Mikey screaming beside Bruce Wayne. “I’m freaking out here!”, he said, placing both hands on his head, as if he was trying to keep his mind from exploding. “Did everyone else know that Batman is Bruce Wayne?!”
The silence that followed, only broken by the smack of Raph’s face palm, spoke for the situation itself. You might not have been the biggest fan of Raph’s way of doing things, but you could not deny how much you related to that smack against his forehead.
“I mean, you knew the Batcave was under Wayne Manor”, Donnie said with a raised brow bone. He knew that his little brother wasn’t the sharpest knife in the draw, but he had never thought that such a revelation would take so long for Mikey to realize.
“I’m just saying it’s a lot to take in”, Mikey said, stretching his face in thought, before he rested his elbows against Bruce, causing Alfred to see red in the corner of his eyes. “Rich and cool! Like leave something for the rest of us guy!” Alfred let out a loud sigh, before he started moving Mikey away from Bruce, causing the orange clad turtle to yell out in protest at the butler. “I’m going, I’m going, okay!”
You looked at Leo with a questionable look, and all he could do was sigh with a small nod. Yes, Mikey was always like that.
“Do we have any idea where Shredder and Ra’s are building this machine?”, you asked, turning back towards Batgirl and Donnie, feeling Leo’s eyes on you, along with the small tug at the corner of his mouth. Apparently you were asking the right questions. And much to your luck, that question sparked a thought in Batgirl’s head.
“I don’t know exactly how Joker makes his venom, but I do know where the components would be”, Batgirl said, leaning over Donnie in order to press on the computer keys. His small flustered expression made you choke down a chuckle. Oh, how you were going to press Batgirl with your knowledge. Even Leo seemed to notice, enhancing small glances with you. Both of you knew something, that much was obvious. Leo poked at Donnie with a small finger, causing the purple clad turtle to scowl at him. “Ace Chemicals”, Batgirl continued, pulling up a picture of the facility. “It’s where the Joker was created, when he fell into a vat of, you know, chemicals. So if they need venom, they’ll be there”.
“But it’s walled off”, Leo pointed out, noting the high walls and barbed wire. “Easy to defend”.
“So what?”, Raph said, sounding frustrated. “If they’re dugg in and ready for a fight, then we bring them a freaking fight”, he continued, slamming his fists together with a dark smile.
“We aren’t doing anything”, a deep voice sounded behind you. You turned in joy, seeing Alfred helping your father up to stand, Robin running to his side in order to help.
“Master Bruce you’re not well”, Alfred said in concern, wishing Bruce would sit down once again.
“I’m as well as I need to be”, Bruce grumbled, taking the drop out of his arm, his gaze turning to the turtles. He stared at them for a moment, before walking to his neatly folded costume on a nearby table. “Batgirl and Robin are coming with me to Ace. (H/N) stays in the manor. The turtles are going home”.
“What?”, Mikey exclaimed in sadness and shock as Bruce pulled on his costume over his head. “C’mon, we know your secret identity now! Our team up have been surmounted!”
“I gave you a change”, Bruce said in a stern voice, turning directly towards the terrapin brothers. “You four are impulsive, and you don’t follow orders”. His eyes narrowing at them. “I want you out of Gotham!”
“Uh, father”, Robin said, his small frame stepping between them. “Look, it pains me to say this, but the turtles saved you in Arkham. They are valiant allies! Even the dumb one! Michelangelo”.
“Hey!”, Mikey exclaimed in a displeased expression. “Not cool!”
“If it wasn’t for them, Joker would have never gotten close enough to inject me in the first place”, Bruce said in a scowl as he closed the clasp on his cape, before pulling the mask up over his head, once again becoming the dark knight of Gotham City, before turning his back to them. “This is not up for discussion”.
Leo felt the burning stair from Batman, telling him to do exactly as he had been told too. To leave Gotham. But Leo’s heart stung at the thought, because leaving Gotham meant not just leaving the city, but leaving you. Leo once again thought back to the visions he had seen under the influence of the Crane Gass. How he had scared you. How you had feared him. He still did not know if these visions had been real, but never did he wish for those visions to be real. He hoped that none of it had been true and just his mind playing tricks on him. But in reality, Leo did not know. He remembered how scared that you had been when you entered Arkham, and how fearful you had been when you walked the halls, and the more Leo thought about it, the more it unsettles him. Maybe Batman was right. Maybe it was best if you stayed in the Wayne Manor where you could be safe while Batman, Robin and Batgirl headed out. And maybe, just maybe it was best if Leo and his brothers left. Leo had scared you once and he did not wish to do it again, even if it was going to hurt him.
“Maybe he’s right”, Leo mumbled, looking down at his feet, not wanting to meet your confused eyes. He could almost hear your heart crack just a little inside your chest, not wanting to believe what you were hearing as he turned towards his brothers. “Following Batman’s lead took us to Arkham and distracted us from Shredder”, he said, not noticing the deepening frown on Raph’s face. We’d be better off on your own”.
“No! No! He ain’t right!”, Raph yelled, pushing back his brothers so he could storm forward. He pushed the leader in blue so hard that he tumbled, only just catching himself before he fell onto you, your eyes meeting once again, sending shock waves through the two of you. Leo felt his mouth dry out as he stared into your eyes, knowing full well that they would be the hardest thing for him to leave behind. The hurt in your eyes and the way his heart was aching, making him freeze in place, unsure of what to do or say. Leo did not want to go. He did not want to leave you. Could he just stand there and look at you forever he would, but sadly, your father did want it to be like that.
“Look, Batman”, Raph said, making his way to your father, who was busy assembling his beloved utility belt. “I get it! The whole brooding loner thing, sitting on top of roof tops, mumbling about how you’re the only one that can stand up to evil in your own city. That’s my whole deal! I love that stuff! And I totally agree that my brothers are annoying, unbearably so sometimes”.
“Uhm”, Leo said, finally realizing that Raph had been talking the whole time the two of you had been locked in each other’s eyes. “Where are you going with this?”
“Teh!”, Raph said annoyed, turning back to Batman. “That’s why. When things get though, I don’t even bother with them. I go off on my own and do things my way!”
“He does do that”, Donnie said, Mikey agreeing with a sounding nod.
“Still doesn’t explain where he’s going”, you whispered, making Leo hum in agreement.
“Yeah, but here’s the thing”, Raph continued. “Every single time, I just get into more trouble and my brothers have to bail me out”.
"It's true!”, Mikey chimed in. “Every time”.
“Sure we make mistakes. Sure we make the wrong moves”, Raph went on, ignoring his little brother. “But we can’t get better-”. Raph grabbed onto Batman’s arm in order to turn him around to face him, making you, Batgirl, Robin and Alfred gasp in surprise. No one just grabbed onto Batman nor Bruce Wayne like that. That was just not how it worked. “-If you don’t trust us”. The turtles, seeming to understand the severity of Raph’s actions, watched with wide eyes. Donnie even covered his mouth, Leo’s eyes going wide and Mikey gasping out loud. Batman said nothing but just narrowed his eyes at the square jawed mutant, almost daring him to continue. “We’re a family, and learning from your mistakes together, is how a family works”.
“This is not a family”, Batman rumbled, bumping his shoulder against Raph’s as he walked past him. “It’s a team”.
“Ain’t that the same thing?”
That comment made Batman halt in his actions. It was as if those words had touched a nerve deep within him. Batman said nothing but stared forward, his thoughts running wild in his head. Raph’s words echoing in his head as he looked to Alfred, Robin, you and Batgirl and then to the turtles, only to notice how close all of you were standing. And how you and Leo seemed to seek each other out in the small crowd. Just like he had noticed the two of you do in Arkham. And on the roof. Even during your first meeting and fight together.
“You’re right”, he finally said, making you all stare at him in disbelief. You felt your palm begin to sweat as Batman made his way towards Leo, determination in his eyes. “Let’s stop Ra’s and Shredder”, he said, before extending a hand to the leader of the turtles. “Together”.
Leo looked at Batman’s hand, extending his own hand in order to shake it, when suddenly…
“Awesome! Dips on the Batmobile!”, Mikey yelled, jumping over the head of a growling Raph, skipping right by you in a rush and right through Leo and Batman’s handshake.
“Uh, we have our own ride”, Leo said after Mikey, not sure if his forgetful lille brother actually was able to remember it.
“You do?”, Batgirl asked Donnie in confusion, causing Donnie to beam with innocent pride, thinking of the van he had tuned up.
“Yeah, we didn’t walk here from New York”, Donnie smiled, secretly hoping that Batgirl would ask about the van.
“Don’t care!”, Mikey yelled, already inside Batman’s car, fastening his seatbelt. “Called the Batmobile!”
Batman looked from Mikey to Leo, his eyes lingering at him for a moment before giving him a small nod. It was time to find Shredder and Ra’s.

The Japanese battleship Fusō with her pagoda mast following her 1930s modernization. Many people are familiar with the pagoda masts themselves, but are less knowledgeable about the purpose of these imposing structures.
The pagoda mast was a lesson in function over form. It was a bid to improve the overall performance of the battleship in combat with the technology available at the time.
Japan began to equip its warships with more spotting devices, rangefinders, directors, search lights, and other equipment. All of this equipment required platforms to carry them and permit their operation. These platforms had to be spaced out to keep the equipment from interfering with each other in operation. This extensive layering of the platforms on the forward tower resembled the distinctive appearance of a pagoda tower, leading to the nickname. The extensive towers were also useful in that they provided extensive shelter to the crew in this part of the ship, allowing them to better perform their duties in inclement weather.
These towers were also quite large. Depending on the battleship, the towers soar over 30m (100') over the waterline. Despite the large size, they did not impact stability as much as one might think. Japanese designs conducted extensive calculations on the top weight of the pagoda towers and balanced them out by increasing the beam of the battleships during modernization through the addition of bulges. The ships remained relatively stable even after the addition of Pagoda towers. For instance, the Ise class saw their metacentric height increase from 1.74m (5.9') just after their completion to 2.81m (9.3') after their 1930s modification. The biggest change was the additional weight and beamier hull made their rolling motion shorter and faster whereas they originally had a longer, slower rolling motion.
The Japanese pagoda masts were contemporaries to the British "Queen Anne's Mansions" superstructure design found on their battleships of the same period. These towers evolved to fulfil a similar function (though the British ships typically were smaller and featured greater enclosed spaces) and, like the Japanese pagoda towers, were used to improve older designs.
It's worth pointing out that the impressive tower structures of the Yamato class battleships were derivatives of the pagoda masts. Like earlier designs, they feature extensive platforms for rangefinders, observation gear, and other equipment. The biggest difference was that the towers of the Yamato class were more streamlined to allow them to better avoid the effects of muzzle blast from the battleship's massive 46cm (18.1") guns.

ficletvember 2023 - day 10
isengrim/dijkstra fuck or die
In the wilds of Zerrikania, Wolf Isengrim and Sigi Reuven stumble on a refreshing oasis that isn't all that it seems. cw for gross tender explicit sex that is dubcon but ultimately very consensual. and it's dijkstra so of course there's size kink obviously.
It was sheer foolishness that had driven them not to the question the surreal glisten of the oasis, marveling at the blue water that beckoned among the rocks.
More foolish still, it was not thirst that drove the wanderers into the pool. Once they had left the hostile Elskerdeg Pass behind, the Zerrikanian road they had trudged down the past month boasted stone wells at regular intervals for watering merchant caravans and livestock. Refilling their waterskins was rarely an issue.
As summer crested with rising heat, the road grew barren and dusty, and there had been no opportunity to bathe since leaving the North behind for good.
For the elf, infrequent bathing had been the way of things for years now, and he at least should have had the sense to be wary. There were pools like this in the wilder parts of the Northern forests. He had lived most of his life in the Blue Mountains, said to be the oldest mountain range in the world, and the hills there were full of trickery, requiring careful navigation in forests and valleys that seemed to turn travellers around in a maze and beckon them deep into the bellies of caverns.
But Isengrim Faoiltiarna had been nothing but wary for ages and ages, and something about the strange human that stepped to the edge of the blue pool beside him had slowly stripped him of all his careful defenses over their months of travel and left him with a rather large blind spot.
He had never seen the man calling himself Sigi Reuven naked and very much wanted to.
The man was broad in every sense, down to the cheeky grin he wore as he caught Isengrim watching him undress. It was not some graceful, coy tease worthy of a seedy Novigradian bathhouse, and the very thought of the immense man engaging in such flirtations was deeply humorous.
But it sent an unexplainable thrill through Isengrim's body to watch thick fingers loosen the buttons straining across his torso and drop to press aside the meat of his stomach to unbuckle his belt and shove down his trousers. Beneath, he wore frumpy, sweat-stained underclothes. Far from sensual. But the promise of the expanse of skin soon to be revealed sent Isengrim's pulse into his throat.
Something about this man stirred up long-dead desires in him. The ache to be close, to touch, to be touched in return. He could not in his memory recall desiring a dh'oine at all, let alone with such sharp intensity.
As they would soon come to find out, something about this blue oasis had plenty to do with stirring desire as well.
"Go on, Grim," said Reuven, voice dropped low, thumbs in the waistband of his smallclothes. "You're a tad overdressed."
Isengrim should have balked at the foolish-sounding shortening of his name, but instead, he shrugged fully nude without pause, eyes not leaving Reuven's until the man's gaze trailed down his revealed body and stopped on the clear display of his arousal standing rigid between his legs.
Though Isengrim's body was ribby and scarred and ugly, Reuven hummed in appreciation, and the noise seemed to go right to the base of his spine. The feeling only deepened when the man shucked out of his last layers of clothing and revealed how proportional he was. Large in the breadth of his shoulders, his towering height, his gut that sat across heavy thighs, and of course, the reddened cock Reuven brazenly took in hand. The size of those hands and the fat his manhood nestled in should have made it appear smaller, but that was not so.
With his curiosity over the man's body slated, fervent new desires rose in Isengrim's mind.
When they slipped into the water, pleasantly cool and hemmed with rocks to rest against, those desires rose tenfold.
Waist-deep, Isengrim waded close enough to touch, and if he were in his right mind, he may have hesitated, may have asked whether Reuven felt the same perplexing fondness that he did. Not just arousal but respect and trust and good humor.
The human was the tallest he had ever stood before, tall enough that even Isengrim had to tip his neck back to look him in the eye.
As the water rippled against their bare waists, arousal won out over any other sentiment, and they fell into one another's arms.
Isengrim's heart thundered as Reuven's palms dwarfed his ribcage, and the desperate, first kiss they shared drove them both to breathlessness.
The heat of the man's body surrounded him, and the water itself seemed to boil.
Neither spared any thought for caution or patience. They had waited long enough, had felt the building warmth of desire since that first unexpected night around a campfire as strangers in the wilderness.
They were far from strangers now, Isengrim's thighs strained to straddle Reuven's waist as he lay back against the rocks, wasting little time in hastening their amorous touches toward a common goal.
It should not have been so easy for the human's thick fingers to press inside his willing entrance, muscles lax and open. Had Isengrim paused to think, he may have questioned the slickness and the ease of the movement, but he had lost all thoughts but those most primal.
To have this man wholly and to be had by him, to know every inch of him in fullness, was his only remaining impulse.
Perhaps if they had had less long-withheld emotion for one another, the pool may have snared some other hapless travellers. Isengrim would ponder that much later while tucked in the quiet of his lover's arms at night. If things had happened differently, would their unlikely connection have been just as inevitable?
In the present, any remaining thought Isengrim had was driven from him in the first shallow thrusts of the formidable cock inside him. With less slowness than was sensible, Isengrim pressed down to meet him, spread thighs quivering with strain as Reuven's thumbs found the divots of his hipbones..
"Sigi," he gasped, and with surprising tenderness, the man drew him close to press his forehead to Isengrim's throat, as though he too were overwhelmed. Sigi held his mouth in a kiss against the line of the elf's collarbone as he deepened his upward thrusts.
If it weren't for Boreas Mun's quick-thinking intervention, that amorous embrace may have spelled the end of the pair locked together in the pool. Their travelling companion didn't know a thing about what manner beast or deity may control such a place, but he did have the common sense to know the swirl of mists and strange glow that swirled around his intertwined comrades could not be anything but hostile.
"Wouldn't have interrupted you fellows otherwise, of course!" he repeated with annoying regularity for the rest of their day of travel and several days afterward, seemingly ignorant of the disgruntled ire directed his way by his companions.
Though both were grateful to have avoided a grisly fate wasting away in some cursed pool, as soon as night fell, they resumed their interrupted activities.
Being overheard by the snoozing Boreas on the other side of the dwindling campfire scarcely crossed their mind.
The feeling was not so different, they discovered.
Even without the magical impulse that had inspired them to act so rashly, Isengrim met Sigi with the same unexpected depth of desire in each kiss and touch.
The stars shone above the human's head as he leaned to cover the elf with his body, driving away the chill of the Zerrikanian night. The weight of him was settling rather than smothering. Half a year before had any told him he would enjoy such a thing so fully, lying beneath a human, Isengrim would have either laughed or drawn his sword.
In Sigi's arms, he could almost weep.
Sparse tears did escape the corners of his eyes at the cusp of it.
Unaided by the magic of the oasis, Isengrim felt the achey stretch as he willed his muscles to give. With shuddering breath, clutching at Sigi's broad shoulders, he rallied and the ache deepened into pleasure.
The strange tenderness of their joined bodies and the depth of their desire had not been a trick of the pool.
And as Isengrim and Dijkstra would learn in the long years after, their connection and fondness were also not a trick of the lonely wilderness and the warm nights under the stars.

Data Science meets the Many Body Problem
Tumblr media
Since the machine learning course I did this semester at Tsinghua university was mainly focused on typical data science applications, I was curious in how far those methods can be applied in physics. Of course it is nothing new that neural networks can in principle also be used for physical applications - however, tensor network methods still seem to be dominant in the field of numerical many body physics. Thus, I decided to dive in a little into the literature about the usage of Restrictive Boltzmann Machines (RBM) in many body physics.
What are RBMs?
Usually, RBMs are used for instance for recommendation tasks (e.g. video recommendations on video platforms) and many more. In general, it is a unsupervised learning technique which makes use of minimizing its "energy". Thus, the intuition behind RBMs is, despite their data science applications, already related to physics: We will see that it is no surprise that "Boltzmann" is part of the name of this method. An RBM utilizes input data, tries to extract meaningful features from it and wants to find the probability distribution over the input. This follows the physical intuition as follows: The RBM is a neural network with two layers, a hidden and a visible layer, where each node can adopt binary values. An example network looks like:
Tumblr media
where the x denote the visible nodes, the h the hidden nodes and W denotes the weights between both layers. Note that there are no links in between the nodes of a single layer; this is why these networks are called restricted Boltzmann machines.
The network is governed by a corresponding energy function as:
Tumblr media
where we also have the offsets of the single nodes (a for the visible nodes and b for the hidden nodes). Given this energy function, one can determine the probability distribution by the Boltzmann distribution where Z is a partition function, as familiar from classical statistical physics. As usual, the energy is supposed to be minimized, what is done by the learning algorithm of the RBM but this should not explained here since it would go beyond the scope of a brief blog entry. At this point I'd only like to mention that there are some difficulties determining e.g. the partition function (which is intractable in general) and that this requires some sophisticated algortihms. If you're interested in this and how the RBMs work exactly, a neat and far more rigorous introduction into RBMs can be found here.
One side note at this point: RBMs were introduced by Geoffrey Hinton after John Hopfield (a physicist) invented the so-called Hopfield networks which are also such an energy based mechanism, based on the physical intuition of Ising models.
Note that so far we only talked about the RBMs as they are used in data science - despite their physical intuition, they had so far nothing to do with neither quantum mechanics nor the many body problem. This is what comes next.
How can this be linked to condensed matter?
As introduced in [1], an RBM that can represent a quantum many body state would look like this:
Tumblr media
In comparison to the previous network we changed the labels from x to σ, where the σ's denote e.g. spin 1/2 configurations, bosonic occupation numbers and so on. For them one has to choose a basis, e.g. the σ^z basis. This configuration can be summarized in the set S. Hence, the visible nodes are the N physical nodes of the system. The M hidden nodes h play the role of auxiliary (spin) variables. The authors describe the understanding of such a neural-network quantum state as follows: "The many-body wave function is a mapping of the N−dimensional set S to (exponentially many) complex numbers which fully specify the amplitude and the phase of the quantum state. The point of view we take here is to interpret the wave function as a computational black box which, given an input manybody configuration S, returns a phase and an amplitude according to Ψ(S)" [1, p.2]. Thus, one gives a certain spin configuration as input and the RBM generates the state, in the following form:
Tumblr media
Thus, once can recognize that the form of such a neural-network quantum state adopts a similar form as the aforementioned Boltzmann distribution (exponential of energy function). However, there is additionally a sum over all possible hidden configurations which specifies the full state. After setting a state up in this form, one aim could be to find the ground state corresponding to a certain Hamiltonian, and according to the authors of [1], their RBM method gives decent results for this task!
Similarity to tensor networks
Interesting is, that this framework (even though it appears very different) has some analogous quantities as tensor network states. For example, the representational quality of a neural-network quantum state can be increased by increasing the number of hidden states: Thus, the ratio M/N plays a similar role as the bond dimension of a tensor product state! There are many more similarities, which should not be discussed here but can be found in [3].
Nevertheless, I'd like to mention an important distinction, which is also crucial for tensor network states, because some algorithms (DMRG etc.) can only handle area law states properly. While volume law states have an entanglement entropy which scales with the volume of the partitions of a state, an area law state has a scaling only proportionally with the area of the cut. Area law states can be handled better numerically, because the bond dimension of tensor network states explode for volume law states (more on tensor networks and area law can be found in [4]). According to [2] the difference between area law states and volume law states can be captured in a neat way with RBM states: While volume law states must have full connections between the hidden and physical nodes, an area law state has fewer links - this imposes locality in a sense. The RBM states thus give a neat intuition between the differenece of both kinds of states.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, RBMs seem to be an interesting approach to connect both data science methods and many body physics. It may be that they have strengths which the usual tensor networks approaches lack: for instance, the authors of [2, p.888] claim that it might be possible that RBMs might be able to handle volume law states better than usual tensor network approaches do, which would be of course a major benefit. Since I haven't heard of this approach within the condensed matter framework before, I'm very curious how the importance of this method will evolve in future research!

Something's Brewing
Reyna pushes herself up against the vending machine and away from the harsh purple light cast her ways by the hundreds of neon lamps luring people into their clubs like moths praying the next lamp will be their salvation. The bell of the Nassau church unleashes its shrill cry onto Amsterdam, announcing the passing of noon. If it weren’t for the bell time would not move in the city. The sun above is shrouded behind a thick grey layer of smog, reserving her light only for those with an apartment high enough, and a wallet big enough. Crowds flock past her, paying her no mind. Yellow eyes scan each and every passerby, analysing the way they walk, where they’re looking and, most importantly, if something is sticking out of their pockets. As soon as she sees her prey does she pounce, jumping into the crowd without a noise, blending in and moving through the grey mass until a single practised motion gets her her price as she jumps off the road and into the dried-up canal below. The lower level is lined with people huddled against the walls using torn coats as tents while campfires keep them warm in the endless night of Amsterdam. A crack in the wall wide enough for Reyna to hide in gives her some cover as she inspects the wallet she just stole. The leather is smooth and new, causing to burn with naive anticipation, but it is completely empty. “Must have been another one of those hipsters,” Ise calls out from behind her.

Iwerks was also the sole animator for this short and spent just two weeks working on it in a back room, at a rate of over 700 drawings a day.[6] It is also speculated Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising might have done work for the short as well.[7][8]
How did Iwerks not kill himself working on this thing? The animation is so smooth and clever, with interesting little bits of action and movement across the layers of the stage layout. The short answer is probably his young age and accumulated work experience, but still! This short is going into the public domain next year, so I was inspired to check it out again on YouTube. I keep seeing comments nowadays like, now’s the time to make fun of the mouse! 🔥 (Due to some of the early work entering public domain, and ire towards the modern corporation). But besides the fact that this version of Mickey is different from modern iterations— I have suddenly the mental image of a crowd coming in with pitchforks and tar, only to be stopped short by the fact that the intended target is the most beautiful, charming little creature they have ever seen. It blows modern mass produced cartoon media (I’m thinking of the stuff targeted towards kids) on YouTube out of the water! The sheer facility with hand drawing that is displayed! The cleverness of the sound effects and the timing! 😭❤️ Honestly, if I had the time, inclination, and finding, I’d see this public domain work as a huge opportunity to stick it to the modern corporation by using this to create… And I just had an idea 💡 while sitting here in the airport of how to utilize the early version of Mickey in a modern, all ages show that is all about showcasing art/crafts/dance that kids could do at home with simple supplies and talking about the history of the crafts, while using animation as a theme to talk about the art of observation. Maybe one day, one day! In my imaginationland—

So!! Clothes!! This will include a whole lotta headcannons
3rd Life, it takes place in the fall and into early winter in a place that experiences both of those seasons not quite vividly but definetly notiecably. So at the start the clothes aren't light persay, but they do have easily removable layers because it would still be warm enough rhat physical labour would leave you hot. And as you move further on the pants start getting heavier, nights spent mending holes and adding linings. Wool jackets pieced together, the works. By the end everything is thick but mobile, and requires under layers. This one i have like no thoughts on really unless we want to get into individuals but that feels excessive for my first inbox ramble to you.
Last life is winter, very early spring. Early spring as in the snow is melting and wet and iced over and dirty and disgusting. The clothes are heavy, and everyone is wearing gloves. Everything is furlined and made of wool (good water proofing which in the snow is a neccessity). People like Scar wear spikes on their shoes for grip (if you dont live in a snowy enviorment, look it up, its a thing, and theyre sick af), j name scar because mountains are colder, are probably always snowing, and damn icy. Well trodden paths are probably slick as all hell as well, so in general boots are built tall, thick, and with traction. Hoods and hats become a neccessity against the wind, but with the hoods already being easy to grab and choke someone with nobody dared risk a scarf to wear. Last life was ruthless. Clothes may be bulky but handholds and easy grips are minimized, too thick to easily grab. Everythings tucked in or tapers at the end. This is also generally where people started wearing their hair either aggresively short or long enough to be pulled up tight and secure easily. The comforts of their other servers may have deluded them into thinking things like this couldnt be used against them in 3rd life, but those beliefs dont last long.
Now I don't have many thoughts on double life, but, this is spring into summer. The begginning is wet and muddy and the shoes are boots that reflect this start. They initially namelt wore wool sweaters (mild water proofing, few hand holds, spring can be quite chilly) but as summer rolled in they swapped to tshirts jn a much lighter material. Pants likely ended up being made of the same material. Some people prioritized camoflauge wgere they could in this series as well.
Limited life is summer back into fall and people have begun to grow comfortable in these games. Hair and hand holds might not be present again, but clothes are loose, and like the clockers, fashion statements are begginning to take priority with bright flashy colors and pieces of clothes that are mildly impractical (unbuttoned shirts are not convienent for chasing someone down). This is a reflection of how they were more careless when it came to dying.
Now much unlike the life series your clothing does not inhibit your success on empires or hermitcraft nearly as much. Where you have to think about the practicallity and how others can ise clothes against you in the life series, as long as you can move and do in your outfit of choice on either hc or esmp you can wear it.
In hermitcraft theres a large variety in outfits. Some hermirts wearing big dresses and extravagent outfits that have got to make life some level harder. But you'll also just see a guy in cargo shorts and a branded tshirt. It reflects the freedom of safety. Now they generally do take into account where thwyre living when outside, their bases would be well insulated and climate controlled meaning inside it is a reasonable temperature to wear whatwver they want.
Empires s1 should probably be a second ask but whatever. I'll just keep it to the kingdoms i know
Rivendell is cold, wet, and constantly snowy. Mountain life, man. Wool as an export makes sense, because again, ir's warm, can be used to make clothes, and is mostly waterproof. And if i know sheep they can be fairly resilient and at this point they also likely can climate control their barns to an extent. So the people of rivendell tend to wear one thick outerlayer and a thinner (probably imported) base layer for aesthetics. The royalty (scott) tend to wear several outer layer sweaters, a cloak (typically short) damn thick pants, and medium boots. The several layers are due to the fact that travel is fast, and diplomatic issues come up and are dealt with in the same day so he often needs to be prepared to handle any given climate. The more layers he removes in his hoise when you visit him as someone of another empire shows how much he respects and trudts you (more=more less=less). Rivendell exporting wool, a material widely used will mean their fashion likely influences several kingdoms, but due to how harsh their climate is it is rare fashion is noticeably impacted by others, that goes far more into language and cuisine. (attached below is an example of scott)
Tumblr media
Pearls empire (gilded hycanthia i believe) is a much more mild climate as it is the food/farming empire. The traditional clothing is far less present than it used to be as it both saw a huve influx of immigrants from several other empires within "recent" memories, is an export everyone relies on so takes influence from nearlt every empire as their climate allows it far easier, and rheir culture. This is the empire where tou will see the leather accessories of grimlands paired with the light dresses of katherines empire on the same person and no one is confused. But traditional clothing is still extremely present in bith rhe royalty and at festivals (a huve part of their culture). The traditional fem garb included what i believe is a hoop skirt, a plain or striped dress (typically longsleeved) over it, and then a second dress (typically tanktop) over that that could be tied up into a very large pocket in the belt that kept everything together. The second layer came in handy with both harvesting and planting. The layers were lights and the skirts could be utilized to create a breeze around your legs and cool you down on hot days. The masc clothing utilized knee length trousers and loose shirts. They also had a sash belt that acted similarly to the 2nd skirt of the fem counterpart. (Attsched below is a couple dancing at a festival, the lady on the left is in entirrly traditional clothed, where as the lady on the right is acknowledging her familys heritage in the grimlands through no longsleeves and leather gloves)
Tumblr media
The grimlands climate has very little to do with their clothes. Most of this empire is accessible without ever going outside and the work they do is hot. So leather is a neccessarry part of their fashion and while their smocjs arent apart of their fashion, theyre always heavily personalized. Tall leather gloves, goggles, tight clothing that is generall fire resistant (leather pants become super popular every other generation or so) are all grimlands staples. Theres very little influence on workdays from other empires, but sometimes on off days, you'll see outside influence run rampant. Thisll be on days such as holidays that are not nearly as serious a buisness as in pearls empire.
I have far more tjoughts but my energy just dropped. Feel free to ask questions or whatwver, no im jot actually super educated, this all mostly bsed but its fascinating to me, and this juat seems logical.
Oooo? 👀👀👀
Tbh clothing is always a fun thing to mess with when it comes to headcanons and gets overlooked so, so often just ;o;
This all actually kinda reminds me of our Nether headcanons related to its different creatures and, to some extent, cultures. Along with gear that non-nether creatures have to wear because of the whole lava, fire, and low oxygen thing. We might ramble about those another time, rn our brain is full of Warrior Cats OC thoughts 😔
Also mini note: We haven't watched Empires s1 and heavily procrastinate on watching it. Absolutely on our list of things to watch and we love to hear or see headcanons about it, just know we don't know all context ;o;

It’s cold and I don’t wanna get out of bed so fuck it, let’s talk about the White Horse of Uffington.
There are a lot of hill figures in the south of England, in places where the topsoil is a thin layer of grass on top of a thick layer of Upper Cretaceous chalk. You just peel back the sod and there it is, ready to be a regimental badge, a horse, or a guy with a giant dong. In the case of the White Horse of Uffington specifically, there’s a bit more soil underneath the sod, so you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed chalk.
Most of these figures aren’t actually all that old, ~500 years old or less, because grass is an incredibly tenacious plant and it grows back over the chalk. If you want to keep a hill figure around it requires regular maintenance. The White Horse has been dated to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, meaning it could well be three thousand years old (there’s a technique called optically stimulated luminescence where scientists can tell when a thing was last exposed to light; they dug down to the bottom of the chalk filled trench and tested the soil underneath. The Horse dates to between 1300 and 550 BC).
Again - and this is the part where I get emotional and weepy - a hill figure requires regular maintenance. Without it, the White Horse would be invisible in a few decades. So every seven years, the villagers of the surrounding communities get together with their baskets of chalk and hammers (and, in more recent years, knee pads) and pound fresh quartz into the trench to prevent it from being overgrown.
With some interruptions during modern times (the Horse was covered in sod during WW2 so it couldn’t be used by the Luftwaffe for navigation) the scouring of the Horse has taken place every seven years for three thousand years. The original builders spoke a Celtic language, or possibly a lost pre-Indo-European language. They didn’t have the same culture or religion or worldview or anything to the people preserving the Horse today. We don’t know what the Horse meant to them. And yet for three thousand years, every seven years, Roman Britons or Saxons or medieval peasants or Clive from down the way have faithfully got together to scour the Horse, to carry it forward from an unknown past to an unknown future.
It’s a tradition even more remarkable for the fact that there’s no point for the Horse’s existence except the fact of the Horse’s existence. This isn’t some high ritual (like the rebuilding of the Ise shrine in Japan, which is connected to the imperial family) it’s a bunch of farmers crushing up rocks. Empires have fallen, gods have faded out of memory, but the Horse continues.

Study demonstrates tailored Ising superconductivity in intercalated bulk niobium diselenide
When 2D layered materials are made thinner (i.e., at the atomic scale), their properties can dramatically change, sometimes resulting in the emergence of entirely new features and in the loss of others. While new or emerging properties can be very advantageous for the development of new technologies, retaining some of the material's original properties is often equally important.
Researchers at Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Frontier Science Center for Quantum Information have recently been able to realize tailored Ising superconductivity in a sample of intercalated bulk niobium diselenide (NbSe2), a characteristic of bulk NbSe2 that is typically compromised in atomically thin layers. The methods they used, outlined in a paper published in Nature Physics, could pave the way towards the fabrication of 2D thin-layered superconducting materials.
"Atomically thin 2D materials exhibit interesting properties that are often distinct from their bulk materials, which consist of hundreds and thousands of layers," Shuyun Zhou, one of the researchers who carried out the study, told Phys.org. "However, atomically thin films/flakes are difficult to fabricate, and the emerging new properties are sometimes achieved by sacrificing some other important properties."

Look! It's another self-indulgent list to end 2022!
I kept meaning to make this list earlier this month, but I forgot. However, I had a long conversation with @m34gs earlier this week I was inspired to sit down and write this list.
Here is my list of "My Top Ten Favourite Bankai in Bleach". Please note this is a list of favourites and not actually one detailing power or "which one is the best". Also note that I'm not going to include Squad Zero. Spoilers are ahead for the entire series so I'll put the rest under a cut, just to be safe.
10. Nanao Ise (Shinken Hakkyoken)
I cannot remember if this is a "proper" bankai, but it is on this list for one reason: I love stories where weapons are passed down in the family. The addition of her captain (and uncle) Kyouraku being the one keeping it sealed due to a promise from her mother really adds more to their dynamic. Finally, I am also a big fan of ritualistic weapons.
9. Yamamoto Genryusei (Ryujin Jakka)
I like Yamamoto's bankai because it embodies many religious perceptions of "hell" or "purgatory". It's destructive, it's unbearably hot, and it can reanimate the skeletons of any foe it has killed. That's not just powerful, it's also emotionally devastating. The animation in TYBW arc truly captured the bankai and bumped it up my list of favourites.
8. Hirako Shinji (Sakanade)
Out of all the bankai on this list I think Shinji's is the most tame in terms of power. That doesn't mean it isn't interesting. Sometimes, less is more and the ability to flip perception of space/direction is simple but fun. It also perfectly highlights Shinji's personality!
7. Abarai Renji (Zabimaru)
Another bankai that's simple, the reason why Zabimaru is on the list is because I love the aesthetic. Swords that extend as well as becoming bone? Fantastic! Also, having two animals that talk as his bankai also gives it a fable vibe which is a 10/10.
6. Hitsugaya Toshiro (Hyorinmaru)
Hitsugaya is one of my favourite characters in Bleach and so his bankai had to show up on my list. I really enjoy how his bankai becomes a part of him, giving him mobility and a bit of extra offense that doesn't just come from his sword. Also, in that filler arc where the zanpakuto become human and rebel against their respective shinigami showed that Hyorinmaru is... really attractive 👀
5. Urahara Kisuke (Benihime)
Okay, first Urahara and Benimaru being one of the few pairs that are not the same gender is a major bonus in my eyes. Next, Benihime looks so regal and proper. Finally, her entire ability centered around reanimating and slicing things up brutally? That 100% fits Urahara "I was once the head of the science division". I also feel that Urahara and Benihime have an actual relationship/dynamic that displays centuries of understanding one another.
4. Kuchiki Rukia (Shirayuki)
The main reason why I love Rukia's bankai is because it took the same element as Hitsugaya, and used a different take on the power. One pet peeve of mine in shonen series is when people share an ability but it's virtually the same. Rukia's bankai couldn't be further from Hitsugaya's. With the focus on freezing, it also resonates very strongly with me as a Canadian. Definitely a terrifying power and I also love that Kubo thought about the drawbacks of such an ability (having to warm up slowly so she doesn't damage or send her body into shock).
3. Kyouraku Shunsui (Katen Kyokotsu)
Another pair where the two are not the same gender! The reason why I love Kyouraku's bankai is because it is so unique! Children's games is not what someone would first think as a power, but it works so well! I also love that his bankai has a lot of drawbacks/rules that need to be in place in order for it to work. It just adds another layer to the theme of his bankai. Finally, his bankai is a duo-wielding sword and I am always a sucker for that.
2. Kurosaki Ichigo (Zangetsu)
Yeah, I know, it's the main character's bankai. Yeah, I know Ichigo's bankai isn't as "flashy" as some of the others on this list. However, the big reason why I love Ichigo's bankai is because of the character growth. Ichigo's first bankai, the one he received in the Soul Society arc, really was a speed run bankai. That resulting in him truly not understanding Zangetsu and having that lack of knowledge biting him in the butt in TYBW arc is some delightful payoff I never expected.
So many times in shonen series a main character gains a new power on top of their old one, but for Ichigo he literally had to go back to basics. There was no new power up but rather a better understanding of the power he has. That is why I rate his bankai so high.
Kuchiki Byakuya (Senbonzakura)
Without a doubt, my favourite bankai of the entire series is Byakuya's. For me, it is the most memorable bankai. It was the first bankai we encountered in the series. Byakuya was the person who posed not just one of the biggest threats in the Soul Society arc for Ichigo, but he also posed as a goal to overcome. The moment they re-met in Soul Society was the story's moment to demonstrate how far Ichigo had come as a character.
Thematic reasons aside, Byakuya's aesthetic is beautiful. Visually, Senbonzakura is stunning. Anytime I see it animated I am always taken away by how beautiful it looks. Yet, with minimal exposition we as the audience can understand how deadly it is. That right there is how you do an ability: there is no need for long winded explanations. Visually, the manga and anime can show the danger Byakuya's bankai poses.
Honourable Mentions:
Kurotsuchi Mayuri (Ashisogi Jizo)
Look, his entire bankai is pure nightmare fuel. That alone deserves at least an honourable mention. I also love that he repeatedly refines and modifies his own bankai. That's super cool!
Unohana Retsu (Minazuki)
Honestly, I just like her bankai for aesthetic purposes. It is also creepy as heck with the pool of blood and I couldn't be happier. I love when female characters are allowed to have dark/creepy imagery.

What do Riders do when they’re suffering from a cold wave?
Cuddling with their significant others and families, mostly in bed and/or under a kotatsu. Except for:
Haruto- Can be found at the doughnut shop hanging out near the oven, allegedly to keep warm, but really because of the doughnuts
Emu- Wrapped up in several layers of clothes and a comforter and huddling under a kotatsu while playing video games
Touma- Is the one being cuddled, as he’s turned into a walking space heater since becoming Saber. Rintaro hogs him a lot because he’s always cold, and so does Ise since he’s a cold-blooded dragon. More often than not he ends up at the bottom of a cuddlepile
Ikki- Soaking in the tub with the water heated as hot as he could manage without passing out

Bitcoin’in Lightning Ağı, Katman-2 protokolünün bir örneğidir. Kullanıcıların çalmalarını ana zincir depolamadan evvel hareket etmelerini sağlar.Layer 1 ağlarıyla ilgili yaygın bir sorun, ölçeklenememeleridir. Bitcoin ve öteki büyük blok zincirleri, artan talep vakitlerinde süreçleri işlemek için gayret eder. Bitcoin, çok fazla hesaplama kaynağı gerektiren Proof of Work (PoW) mutabakat düzeneğini kullanır.
