"No," he settles on, after a beat, taking a sip of his water to wash it away. It's late and everyone has long since left HQ. He's been doing this more often: staying late, not going home. Claire hasn't said anything yet because she knows he's been dealing with a lot after Adam's assassination, but she will soon. There's nothing he can do to make up for it. It's not even his "mistake" to make up for. Try telling his guilt that.

And then there's Sherry, and all the little details he hadn't known about in a file folder of Derek Simmon's collected information. He might as well have slapped him in the face or punched him in the gut. So, what. You signed yourself away to the government who said they would take good care of the little girl who lost everything, even herself. And you fucking believed them, like the naive idiot you are.

Or no, not naive. Just tragically hopeful, wanting more than anything to believe that if you just tried hard enough, if you just worked hard enough, if you just did everything they asked you to do, they would keep her safe and unharmed and nothing at all would happen to her. It didn't matter if it ground you down to the bone, ground your bone to dust, so long as she was alright.

But she wasn't.

Patients call in all the time and try to tell me "oh I paid less last time" (you've been paying the same thing since 2019) or "last time you shipped it you overnighted it through FedEx" (we've literally never used FedEx) or they'll come in and be like "I've never seen you before" ( I have face blindness and I still know I rang you out last week) or "you aren't actually the pharmacist I'll report you to the owner" (please go ahead and waste my boss's time that's hilarious).

I especially love the extra blatant lies about talking to -insert common name here- bc like. Bro there are literally 3 people who work at this location this isn't some big chain with a revolving door of new hires (even if we generally have more batshit drama than most big pharmacies have).
