Fictober day 2, Dystober prompt, mood: angst
When a world-altering wish is made, where will Marinette be safe?
Marinette panted as she ran. Was nowhere safe? Everywhere she turned someone pointed and yelled- often giving chase. They-she had failed and Haw-Gabriel! had made his wish. And this new reality was nothing like the Paris she remembered. Adrien had shimmered and disappeared before her eyes and then everything had changed. Marinette Dupain-Cheng was Paris’ most wanted for crimes she hadn’t managed to figure out yet. What the hell kind of balance was this? She ran across the gangway and onto the Liberty, taking refuge in a place that had always made her feel safe. This was her last hope, her last chance.
“Marinette?” She froze. This was it. Turning slowly, she faced Luka and took a deep breath to await her fate. There was nothing she could do to quell the shaking.
“There is so much in my head.” Marinette felt tears prick her eyes at the pain she could see in his expression. “I don’t know what’s real anymore, but I know you can’t be the person everyone says you are-- I can’t let you be hurt. Why is that?”
“Reality is broken. I- I don’t know how to fix it. I’m sorry.” Marinette tensed and shifted further from view at the sound of shouting from the bank. Luka’s eyes widened and he moved toward her, and grabbing her by the elbow, he quickly led her down the stairs and into his room.
“C’mon, nobody’ll find you here.”
She breathed a shaky sigh of relief; she didn’t know what new challenges this broken world had in store for her, but Luka was on her side. No matter the outcome, she would rest in the fact that some things stayed the same.

"It's not too late, let's go."
Fictober, Day 1
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/50464351
An akuma ruined their plans again, can Luka cheer her up?
"We can still make it!"
"What do you mean, how? It started ages ago."
Luka looked at her carefully, admiring her crimson dress, perfectly styled hair, and the cute wedge heels on her feet. She looked perfect, except for the disappointment in her eyes and the pout on her lips that made him want to kiss it all better.
The akuma of the day had terrible timing (which wasn't new), and Marinette had worked so hard to make the autumn dance perfect, it was unfair that she'd already missed most of it. He didn't want her to give up completely.
"It's not too late, let's go. And even if we only make it in time for one dance, it would be worth everything, so long as I get to spend it with you."
He stood up a little straighter when her eyes flicked appreciatively over his dress clothes, he didn't wear formal wear for just anyone, after all.
"I guess you do look too good to keep to myself," she teased lightly, brushing a stray tear from the corner of her eye before stepping forward to take his hand. "And this dress was made for dancing."
He smiled at her compliment and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"Let's go, then."
They ran the rest of the way and they managed to enjoy three dances before the evening ended and the party broke apart. And the best part? She didn't let go of his hand for the rest of the night.

October 31: Halloween
There was magic in the air. Marinette could feel it the moment she woke up. The crisp tingle in the air that was something more than just the cold: a promise that something was coming, that anything was possible, that with the end of one season a grand new beginning was about to start.
The Harvest was a season for endings. For death.
But death was never truly an end, after all. The long night was at the door, but the light would come again.
Marinette couldn’t wait.
It was Hallows Eve.
And Hallows Eve was magic.
She bit down on her silent, giggling squeal and wiggled, her toes brushing against smooth scales as she burrowed against Luka’s warm chest. He grumbled and tightened his arms around her.
“M’nette…” he mumbled, and she giggled as she leaned up and kissed his cheek. He tried to tuck his face back against her shoulder, bumping his forehead into her chin in the process. She brushed his hair back and raised her head to kiss his forehead, and he sighed once he could nuzzle her shoulder. She shivered when his lips settled against her neck, his breath cool on her skin.
“Sorry,” she whispered. “It’s Hallows Eve, Luka.”
He grumbled something she couldn’t make out and pulled her closer. She rubbed her hand along his back before curling her fingers over his shoulder. She pressed a kiss against his chest, smiling when the tip of his tail flicked against her ankle.
“I have to get up,” she whispered, rubbing her nose against his chest. Nuzzling him like one of his own, she thought with a small smile. “It’s a big day.”
“No,” he whined, his tail curling around one of her legs. She shivered at the feeling. He’d been doing that more and more lately, and it hadn’t been the first morning she’d woken with his tail coiled around her. She was afraid to admit how much she loved it. “Ssssstay.”
But she couldn’t. It was Hallows Eve. There was still much to do before night fell. The village would be throwing a festival to celebrate, and she had promised Mylène she would join her and Ivan for a time. Much as she wished he could join them, she knew it would be too cold for Luka, even with the enchanted cloak she had made him. She was excited to spend the evening with her new friends, but she was determined to be home before midnight.
She wanted to spend the Witching Hour with Luka. She hoped he would be more awake then.
“I’ll just be on the other side of the curtain,” she said, resting her cheek above his heart. “I’m heading out later, but that’s hours from now.” At his grumble, she nuzzled him again. “Oh, stop. I won’t be long. But, before I go tonight...if you’re up for it…”
He kissed her neck, and she smiled as she snuggled closer.
“Watch the moonrise with me?” she whispered, almost shyly. He pulled back, enough that he could see her. She bit her lip, her fingers scratching lightly – teasingly – along his shoulder. “Please?”
He kissed her, and it was hard to remember why leaving their nest had seemed so important in the first place. Hallows Eve didn’t seem like such a big deal when Luka kissed her like that.
“I’d love to.”

MINIFIC: LBSC October 2021 Minific Challenge: 29: Trick (MLB/Lukanette/Winters)

October 29: Trick
Marinette smiled as she raised her tea to her lips, taking a moment to breathe in the last of the calming steam before finishing her drink. It was late, the fire was burning low, and the wind was loud enough against the shutters to make her cold. She cleaned her cup, went to toss another log on the fire, and turned back towards Luka’s…
…she had spent almost every night of the past month in his nest. Was it really right to call it his nest anymore? It felt more like theirs.
She slipped past the curtain and under the blankets, smiling when Luka immediately reached for her. A tiny part of her – one she was more than happy to ignore – warned her she was getting too comfortable with all this. That she was fooling herself, and it was all just going to hurt more when spring came and he left. That this wasn’t really their home, and she needed to stop entertaining such ideas before it was too late.
…but then Luka would wrap his arms tight around her, and he would tuck his face against her neck, and it was all too easy to ignore that little voice.
“Misssssed you,” Luka murmured, nuzzling her. She smiled and reached up to comb her fingers through his hair.
“I was home all day,” she whispered. He grumbled incoherently, pulling her closer.
“Cold,” he mumbled. “Not here. With…”
His words were slurring and incoherent, but her breath caught when she thought she heard something that sounded like ‘mate’ or ‘mine’ or maybe was just her name. A quiet supplication to stay with him, in their nest, where it was warm and they were together. Her hand stilled in his hair, but he had stopped talking. He had fallen back asleep.
…she couldn’t have heard him right. It had to have been a trick of her ears, her mind, her…heart, which was already fooling itself into thinking this could be her life now.
The little voice in her head that knew better smiled smugly. It felt like it was gloating.

MINIFIC: LBSC October 2021 Minific Challenge: 09: Lyrics (MLB/Lukanette/Winters)
Notes: For @lovebugs-and-snakecharmers's October 2021 Minific Challenge day 09 (lyrics). So last Friday, I was on my way to a doctor’s appointment when we got stopped at a light and this little dune buggy pulled up behind the car next to us. And we had our radio off and windows down, but all of a sudden Great Big Sea was playing and I’m throwing myself out the window gawking at the buggy and pointing and going “GREAT MUSIC!” And the guy just laughed and cranked it up, and we had a little red light sing along, and that’s really my only excuse for this. 😂 I used up all my energy & air for the day singing “Excursion Around the Bay” and “Jolly Roving Tar” with a stranger. 😂

October 09: Lyrics
A silly little grin curled Luka’s lips as he watched Marinette work. He had woken up to the sound of her moving about the kitchen and had pulled the curtain open to watch her work, but he wasn’t quite ready to get up yet. She hadn’t noticed him and continued to move about, humming as she worked.
He closed his eyes and smiled, resting his head on his arms. He didn’t recognize the song, but the tune was upbeat and catchy. And Marinette –
“…I think I’m going to die,” Marinette sang softly, and his eyes popped open in surprise. What? “Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife say, I wish I’d never taken this excursion around the bay!”
She spun as a little crystal on the counter started chiming, a piping bag forgotten on the counter behind her as she dusted her hands on her apron. She squeaked when she saw him staring at her, jumping back to grip the counter with one hand as the other pressed above her heart.
“Luka!” she gasped. He grinned at her, and she shook her head and laughed. “How long have you been up?”
“Not long,” he said, sitting up and stretching. His grin grew when he noticed her ogling, and she quickly looked away as her cheeks pinked. “Interessssting ssssong.”
She rolled her eyes and grabbed a towel before moving to the oven.
“I had lunch at the inn with Mylène,” she said as she pulled a tray out. He couldn’t see what was on it, but it smelled delicious. He was almost sad he couldn’t eat anything until spring. “There was a group of men in the back that were well on their way to drunk and started a seisiún. It’s been stuck in my head all afternoon.”
“You have a niccce voiccce,” he said, settling at the edge of the counter so he would be out of her way but still close. “Sssing sssome more for me?”
Her face turned a darker shade of red that had him grinning again, but she was smiling as she resumed her song. Macarons – she was making macarons.
“Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife cry. Oh me, oh my, I think I’m going to die. Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife say, I wish I’d never taken this excursion around the bay!”

MINIFIC: LBSC October 2021 Minific Challenge: 28: Murder (MLB/Lukanette/Winters)

October 28: Murder
“Oh, no!”
Luka was only somewhat awake, dozing in a pile under a blanket by the fire, when he heard Marinette’s quiet cry. He was fully awake, his head popping out of his coil with a jolt, when he heard the following smash.
“M’nette?” he mumbled, blinking in her direction. He paused when his vision cleared and he saw her.
Standing in the kitchen, her apron and face and hands stained red like she had just…murdered someone. Her hands – which were partially raised and twitching – were covered in a red goop that was...thicker than blood but still dripping down her arms eerily. She had been looking at the floor by her feet, where it looked like she had dropped a glass jar that had been full of more of the red stuff. She looked up at him when he called her name again.
“Sorry!” she squeaked, guilt flashing across her face. He had to smile: she looked adorable, if…well. A little disconcerting. Creepy. “Did I wake you?”
“S’fine,” he slurred. He coughed, shook his head, and rubbed his eyes. She was smiling when he looked back at her. “Are you all right?”
“You are such a worry-wart,” she sighed. She wiped her hands on her apron. “I just dropped a jar of preserves.”
“Preserves?” he asked. She gestured to the counter, where many jars of the red stuff were set out.
“It’s the last of the berry harvest,” she said. “I was making preserves so none of it would be wasted. Of course I had to drop one, clumsy witch that I am.”
“You’re a great witch,” he said automatically. She rolled her eyes, but her expression was fond.
“You like me,” she said, her tone teasing. “You have to say that.”
He grinned back at her. She wasn’t entirely wrong (though she was a great witch).
“Ssso the red…?” he asked, nodding towards her hands. They were still red, but the goopypart was on her apron. She waved him off and turned for her broom (the cleaning one, not the flying one – a lesson he had learned early and well).
“Just preserves,” she said, sweeping the mess into a dustpan. “Stay over there until I get this cleaned up, ok?”
The tip of his tail flicked almost unconsciously when she looked up at him. He just smiled, folded his arms over the top loop of tail, and rested his head on his arms. She started humming as she worked, and it wasn’t long before he was back to sleep.

MINIFIC: LBSC October 2021 Minific Challenge: 21: Flowers (MLB/Lukanette/Winters)
Notes: For @lovebugs-and-snakecharmers's October 2021 Minific Challenge Day 21 (flowers).
Read on Ao3
October 21: Flowers
It’s in a blue Tacoma, California, white magnolia in your hair
Rays of gold are shining on ya – oh, if heaven is anywhere, it’s…
Never running out of golden road, always having your hand to hold…
Oh, if heaven is anywhere, it’s right here
“Blue Tacoma” – Russell Dickerson
“You’re doing it again,” she said, her voice half teasing and half accusatory. His arms dropped down the rock to comb through her hair, his lips curling into a lazy smile.
“Doing what?” he murmured. Her hair was so soft, its silky strands gleaming in the sun. She’d fashioned herself a flower crown out of pink and white flowers (he wasn’t sure what their names were, though she had known), and she was busy stripping purple flowers from the long stems it grew on. Larkspur, she had called it. He had known it to make certain creatures ill, but she claimed it could be useful in some of her salves.
“Looking at me funny,” she said, tipping her head back and poking her tongue out at him. His eyes locked on the pink tip, his own tongue darting out unconsciously to scent the air. She smelled wonderful. She opened her eyes and grinned at him. “What, did bugs get in my hair or something?”
He chuckled and shook his head, running his fingers through her hair again.
“No,” he said. She kept looking at him expectantly, and he swallowed. He couldn’t tell her that she was beautiful like this, her hair warm from the sunlight and adorned with flowers. He couldn’t tell her how completely and utterly she had bewitched him. How badly he wished to give her his heart, had she not already spirited it away like the little witch she was.
“Luka?” she asked.
“I like the flowers,” he said instead, brushing a pink petal with his claw. She reached up to brush her fingers against his cheek, and he leaned into her touch. His eyes closed as he sighed. “Marinette…”
…his eyes opened to darkness. He blinked a few times, trying to clear them, but it was still dark. And cold, despite the warm blankets wrapped around him – despite the warm mate tucked against his chest.
It had been nothing more than a dream.
He sighed and pressed his face against her shoulder, nuzzling her. She squirmed closer, her lips brushing against his neck as she murmured in her sleep. He kissed her shoulder and smiled.
He would cover her in flowers when the sun returned. She had looked beautiful the previous summer, with her crowns and petals dusting her shoulders like she was a part of the forest. He would find her all the flowers she wanted, once it was warm again…

MINIFIC: LBSC October 2021 Minific Challenge: 16: Demon (MLB/Lukanette/Winters)
Notes: For @lovebugs-and-snakecharmers's October 2021 Minific Challenge Day 16 (Demon). …I think I just accidentally set the Winters ‘Verse in Ingary? Oops? (Pulling from Howl’s Moving Castle (book!verse never movie) and Stardust (movie!verse because the ending fits this story better). Neither have to be known to read this, though.)
Read on Ao3
October 16: Demon
“Look!” Luka cried, pushing himself up on his elbow and pointing towards the sky. Marinette followed his finger to see a star streaking across the sky. “A falling sssstar!”
It had been a rare warm day, and the night sky was clear. Marinette had made herself a cup of warm hot chocolate and gone outside to enjoy the stars. Luka had awoken, grabbed one of his blankets, and slithered out to join her. It had been nice: it reminded Marinette of summer nights, on their backs in her yard, talking late into the night as they stargazed.
Her heart twisted at the sight of the falling star, though. She sipped her cocoa as the star disappeared from sight. Somewhere, if it was lucky, it would burn out and die.
“Falling stars always make me sad,” she said. Luka settled back against his tail and looked up at her, confused.
“Ssssad?” he asked. She hummed, bouncing her feet to set her chair rocking.
“I met a falling star once, in the Citadel,” she said. Her nose scrunched, and she shook her head. “Well, no, that’s not quite right. Once they fall, they aren’t stars anymore. They’re demons.”
“What?” he asked, sitting back up. She smiled at the look of surprise on his face. “I was always told ssstars are jussst…fire. Far, far away in the sssky.”
“They are,” she said, smiling. “That’s why they become fire demons when they fall. It never ends well for them, though. They must either be bound to a human or they die. And if they’re bound long enough, they become wicked and turn the human into something twisted.”
Luka looked back to the sky and frowned.
“…that’sss ssso sssad,” he said. She reached out absently and brushed her fingers through his hair. He turned back to her, a small smile on his face, but she was searching the sky. She gave his hair a little tug when she found whatever she was looking for and pointed. He looked back to the sky, but he didn’t see what she was looking at.
“Do you see that really bright star, almost directly above us? With the smaller star besides?” she asked. After a moment he did, and he nodded. Her smile warmed. “It doesn’t always end bad. That star is named Yvaine. She’s the evening star – the brightest they have. A long time ago, long before we were born, she fell and bound herself to a king. They were deeply in love, and when his time came she took him back into the sky with her so they could be together forever. He’s the smaller star beside her. His love kept her from turning evil.”
“That doesn’t ssssound ssso bad,” Luka hummed. He leaned back against her legs, and she giggled as she stopped rocking. He looked up at her and smiled. “Forever with your mate? I wouldn’t mind that.”
“Silly snake,” she giggled, brushing his hair again. “The fire demon I met actually knew her. His story didn’t end so bad, either, but he said he got lucky. He had bound himself to a powerful wizard, but the contract was killing both of them. They met a powerful witch who could speak life into things, and she was able to break the contract and save both of them. She ended up falling in love with the wizard, actually. She’s a lovely witch, but he’s…” Her nose scrunched again, and a hissing laugh left him. “The Wizard Pendragon is a bit of an acquired taste.”
“Are all falling ssstar – fire demon – ssstories love ssstories?” he asked, grinning at her. She giggled, brushing his bangs back to better see his eyes. He leaned into her touch, and her smile warmed.
“I suppose they are.”
