You know what I find fascinating? In the books, the *instant* Curtain learns about Constance's psychic powers, he immediately begins plotting how he can use her. He reacts with delight, exclaiming, "Oh, what a useful little girl you are! I had no idea!" On multiple occasions, he demonstrates his intent and capability to use Constance's powers for his own gain by making her "verify" that his threats are truthful (and that he intends to follow through on them).

When the Ten Men are chasing after the children, there is a higher value placed on Constance's head than the other three children: "She's the greatest catch, at any rate," in TPD, as well as McCracken in Riddle of Ages asking, "Does that frighten you, ducky? To know that you're important to us?" So important that he attempts to trade the safety of the rest of the children for Constance. (Whether he intended to follow through on that promise is another matter.) Point is - her powers make her useful, her powers make her valuable, and Book Curtain and the Ten Men do not hesitate to exploit this.

What's fascinating to me is that we see none of this in the show. The reveal that Constance is psychic is met not with a sick delight, but more with, "Ah, dammit, I should've *known* the tiny girl was psychic. Rats." And then the conversation moves on! Even though Curtain had more pressing issues to deal with at the moment - namely, the return of his long-lost brother - Curtain doesn't even follow this up in Season 2. At no point does he show intent to use Constance's powers to further his own aims somehow. He never instructs Jeffers to give Constance "special attention" in any way.

In fact, the only person we see kidnap Constance for her powers is Garrison - and I would argue that Garrison was less fascinated with Constance's abilities and more so tormented by the dilemma of repairing and perfecting the Whisperer. Constance was the one to destroy the Whisperer; therefore, she needed Constance to take the new and improved Whisperer for a test run, make sure it was failproof. Not necessarily because she wanted Constance's psychic powers to improve the Whisperer somehow. Her improvements were all her own, all science; she just needed a bear to test out the newest prototype of bear-proof packaging.

And I wonder what caused this change between the worlds in the way Constance is treated. Is it the changes made to Curtain's personality? Is it the fact that he has a child in this universe somehow? Is it because Constance was already under his Happiness control when he comes face to face with her in Season 2? (Although you'd think that he'd mention her powers on the phone to Jeffers if this was solely the reason.) Is it the fact that he's too focused on his brother? This seems unlikely to me, as Show Curtain seems to treat the children with a sort of respect as enemies in Season 2, despite the fact that they're eleven. He constantly glosses over the involvement of the adults to insist that Jeffers apprehend the children, so clearly they're important to him. But they're all equally important and threatening to him for their ability to somehow, inexplicably outwit him - not the fact that one of them has psychic powers.

Anyways, I'm not sure where I'm going with this, or if there's even a reason we can pinpoint for this difference. I just think it's a really interesting change and really serves to differentiate Show Curtain's character from the books.

1. Fleur & Jackie (VS Hamelin)

The dazzling, dangerous duo of a heiress and a hitman-for-hire! Fleur was the one that gave Jackie her name, Jacqueline, from a romance novel she had been reading at the time.

Though they look like they share a standard master and servant relationship, the two are more like equals with a directional hierarchy. Partners-in-crime, if you will...

As a research student who's always struggling to get the Tops at her school to assist her in her thesis, Hamelin hates rich people for hoarding the very historical artefacts she needs for her research. With her Magikey deck and homemade gadgets, even state-of-the-art security systems don't stand a chance!

The next day after a failed heist at Fleur (after being foiled by Jackie), she bumps into him at the college. To her horror, Jackie learns her name, and from that day on seems to have decided that the two of them are now friends. 

Jackie has no clue that Hamelin and the phantom thief are the same person, but somehow he constantly makes cryptic remarks that allude to such knowledge. It always sets off the wheel in Hammy’s head.

“Inviting me out for an outing after nightfall? Is she trying to get proof that I am the phantom thief by proving that the two of us can never be at the same place at the same time? But if I say no, then she has even more reason to suspect me! If I say yes, I’m playing right into her hands… Curses! A moth? More like a spider!”  “(... She’s been thinking for a while now… Is she trying to think up a way to gently let me down? I feel a little bad… But I’m not giving up!)” <- innocently just wants to be friends

2. Violentshipping Fuschia/Viol

In their clash during the war, Fuschia learnt the cruel reality of the dimensional war he was so happily participating in. He was to get a taste of his own medicine, but escaped his cardboard fate when Viol heard his desperate pleas about his siblings.

I'm slowly working on the specifics of their encounter but anyway here are bingo charts for the both of them filled by each other:

3. RGB trio (Fuschia & Abel* & Viol)

Fuschia thought he'd just have to avoid Viol for the rest of life as long as he worked at LDS, but little did he know meeting up with his old schoolmate, Abel, had a surprise in store for him... Their theme song is guy.exe by superfruit

4. Abel & Viol

After Abel defected to Xyz, the two ended up being in the same refugee camp. While they knew of each other's existence, they never spoke a word to each other for the entire war, only ever enjoying each other's silent company as they ate their meals in companiable silence. It was only after the war ended when they both returned to their 'spot' as a last hurrah of sorts that they finally exchanged names.

The two look stunning no matter the state they're in, and are often mistaken to be models. While they can be found hanging out at the most fashionable cafes in Maiami on the weekend, they'll also do the strangest things together, such as going fishing in the middle of a heavy storm.

5. Fusion Mean Girls (Fuschia + Auvria* + Abel +α)

At any given day during a school day, Fuschia and Auvria can be seen sitting at the back of the classroom doing anything but paying attention, such as painting their nails. Despite that, if you were to call on them, they'd be able to answer the question with ease. This catches the eye of a certain Obelisk Force member...

On the battlefield, the pink-headed pair often play a game to see who can collect more resistance scarves in a given time limit.

6. Arte & Alcidis

In school, the two quickly became friends over a shared interest in the field of design. While Alcie would hesitate calling Arte a friend then, the loss of her comforting presence during the war made him realise how reliant he had been on her company. During the invasion, he writes many letters (diary entries) to her, knowing that she would want to know everything that happened. He doesn't actually give them to her when she's revived, because he's let himself be very vulnerable in them.

I used to be severely entomophobic, and the first bug I picked up that helped me get over the fear was a g*psy moth caterpillar. I went back and forth on the ethics of getting an invasive species tattooed, but the lil stinkers are too close to my heart I guess.

Beautiful tattoo and little friend visiting the tattoo! They may be invasive, but they're still pretty dang cute. And I love that they helped you get over your fear :)

For future reference, they are now referred to as the LD moth (as in Lymantria dispar - also sometimes LDD moth for the subpsecies Lymantria dispar dispar) because the original common name is considered a slur.

i mean its hard for me to choose one?? im definitely the sort of fic writer that puts a little bit of themself into every character they touch. i will say though that the effect is most pronounced on the vessels, on markoth (of all fuckin characters), and probably on hornet?

so like. its hard for me to choose the character i identify with the Most cause. they all serve different purposes, i guess. its hard for me to phrase this fgkjs

V: A secondary (or underrated) character you want to see more of in fic?

id love to see more of the moths in fic. that includes the seer, markoth, thistlewind, maaaaaaaaybe karina? but also just the moths in general. maybe i just havent seen a lot of fic with them in it, but it seems a lot of fic largely focuses on the main sibling trio—which is good and delightful—and quirrel, the dreamers, the pale court, and like. what about the moths. if the moths are mentioned at all its usually just the seer. what do people think about markoth and thistlewind? their personalities and how they interact? im also huge on the ‘markoth is the seer’s son’ headcanon so id love to see more on that too

i mean markoth and thistlewind are canonically dead. which. might contribute to some of this, i know, but. so many fics go ‘hey fuck you none of these characters are dead because I Said So,’ so its not really an excuse?? asdfkjghjks

just. idk man. i feel like theres a lot of potential in markoth’s character, based on the little tidbit of personality we see from him and what we hear from thistlewind. the other moths are mostly a blank slate too. id love to see how other people develop them :)

#fun fact: karina was supposed to appear in dreamless #but wound up getting cut from the cast because she really wasnt going to serve much of a purpose #there was going to be a second separate moth tribe that didnt live in hallownest #but i think that would make radi too powerful and it wouldnt quite work with dreamless #on the other hand! theres nothing stopping smaller populations of moths gone exploring #or non-moth followers of radi just Existing in areas that arent hallownest #which is probably going to come up in the plot? it may. not sure yet #if you dont remember who karina is its okay. shes forgettable. shes one of the spirits in the spirits' glade #but she looks nothing like the other three moths and its a little weird #ask game #theres a sadder answer for C but eh. not that important and im not gonna mention it #like you cant ask me who i identify with the Most when im playing with a cast this big #the answer is All Of Them #In Different Ways #anyway yeet thanks for the ask finch LD #*:D fuck
