scent of the day: thé matcha 26 (le labo)

last time i sampled a matcha fragrance it left me wishing for more astringency and more androgyny. thé matcha 26 by le labo has both in spades. what it doesn't have, regrettably, is a lot of matcha. the citrus and the bitter-herbal vetiver create an impression that reminds me of slightly oversteeped green tea with lemon peel, but i don't get the grounded earthiness that is particular to matcha. though fleeting, i think replica's matcha meditation did a better job in conveying its matcha notes. i also don't get a lot of the sweetness from the fig; to me this is downright green and woody and masculine-leaning. i like the cedar base, though: it's warm and comfortingly solid, a soft heart underneath a sharp exterior.

a reviewer on fragrantica pointed out that this smells like iso e super, and that's exactly it: that sour, almost brutalist note is just like my sample of enigma by alkemia, which is straight up iso e super and was never quite my thing. somehow reminds me a little of old electronics, which is nearly a weird enough scent association to make me enjoy it, but at the end of the day i'd still rather wear something else myself, unless i'm in a rather ascetic and/or masculine mood.

Alex's scent- Le Labo Santal 33

I love this fragrance so much! The description may make it seem wild and masculine, but it's actually a very mature and composed unisex scent. Santal 33 opens with a relatively strong leather note, along with the woodiness of cedar. Sandalwood stays in the background to provide a sense of steadiness. To me papyrus is really the star support here- it tones down the "cowboy" elements while adding sophistication.

I had imagined Alex's fragrance to be more on the suave and smug side, but Santal 33 really works well for the politician side of Alex- that's probably why Henry smells it on Alex when they get pushed into the janitor closet. This is also an incredibly calming scent so it would be a great choice for any time Alex might be bothered by anxiety. However, IMHO, Alex would wear something more playful when he's out partying😆

Santal 33 shares similarities with Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moleculaire, which I also adore💖
