(11/30) Recently I explained the concept of dépaysé(e), which literally translates to “de-countried”. Before I learned this word I could never eloquently describe why it always felt so off to be back in Ireland, and how I tend to feel a bit lost and foreign there despite being Irish. It can also be used in a positive context though! You could describe a holiday being great bcs everything felt so different, j’ai été dépaysé(e) ☕️

Wednesday, September 27.
Langblr.
If ever you're in France, accompanied by your kitty cat, and you find yourself unintentionally (and quite unexpectedly) projecting intestinal gas produced within the body by bacteria that has broken down food, and said kitty cat looks a little alarmed, and you don't know what to say, well. Fortune smiles upon you this day. Consider #langblr your knight in shining linguistic armor. Chat, j'ai pété.
It really can happen to anyone. But langblr is here for all your polyglot needs: learning how to say chai tea in Czech, the frankly adorable etymology of peninsula, Greek paleographic fonts, for words of support for those underway with their language-learning adventures, or if you're in need of some support yourself. It is a particularly wholesome corner of Tumblr, for those with an interest in the slow-burn magic of learning another language.

The Benefits of Learning Foreign Languages in a Globalized World | Symbiosis SIFIL
Due to increasing globalization, many individuals of all age groups have decided to take on a French language course. Learning a foreign language may lead to exciting opportunities in your career, education, and travel.
As the official language in 29 countries worldwide, French is among the top options for language students, and its numerous distinct advantages may make it the best choice for you. There's no question that whether you start learning French online or through in-person lessons, you'll encounter difficulties and problems along the road.
Even though French may not be the most challenging language to learn, it may be challenging, as with any language learning experience. Learning French broadens your job options, enhances your travel experiences, provides access to educational resources, and creates the groundwork for mastering other Romance languages.
Learning French may help you interact with clientele, vendors, and workers in different nations, regardless of your sector or career. If you work within international commerce or politics, though, French is incredibly beneficial.
Organizations such as NATO, the United Nations, as well as the International Olympic Committee all utilize French as their official language. Learning French might propel you towards a superior position in your present employer or even to your ideal career!
Even a rudimentary understanding of French may make travel easier and more pleasurable by allowing you to speak with individuals in hotels, restaurants, and public transportation.
Additionally, with 274 million competent French speakers worldwide, the language will allow you to communicate with people from Europe, Canada and Australia, as well as many African countries.
With 4 percent of Internet material being French and approximately 59.8 million people talking in the language, studying French will allow you to enjoy more of the current culture. Another incentive to study French is to broaden your educational alternatives. If your French level is strong enough, you could be able to enroll in a top institution in a French-speaking nation.
French is quite comparable to various European languages including Spanish, Italian,
Portuguese, and Romanian. This means that learning these languages in the future will be a lot easier than beginning from scratch. One of the most significant advantages of studying French is the capacity to communicate in different languages.
Of all these other foreign languages, if there is any close to the popularity of the French language, it is Spanish. One could acquire the same benefits from learning Spanish as they can from learning French. After French, the Russian language course is the most popular amongst students in high school and colleges.

re: Duolingo using AI and people choosing to stop using it but feeling lost as to how to access language learning
One alternative app you might look into is MangoLanguages -- it's often free through your local public library! Try going to get a library card and checking if they have it as an online resource. If you can't get access for free through the public library, you can pay a few bucks a month (actually might be like $10? I'd have to double check).
(And yes, MangoLangs has Finnish!)

Keeping up your Languages when you’re Busy
Confession: I’ve been slacking on Japanese recently because my life has been so hectic recently. So here are some of the ways I’ve been trying to keep it in my brain when I can’t dedicate a lot of time to studying.
CHANGE YOUR PHONE LANGUAGE
This applies to computers as well! This is the easiest way to ensure you see at least some of your target language every day. It’s good for any level, even beginners.
If you haven’t already done this, do it now. I understand that some things are important and you need to be sure you understand them — in that case, you can always change individual apps to have different languages, just look up the app name in settings.
Podcasts/Music
Find some podcasts in your target language and listen to them before bed, during your commute, whatever. There are lots of podcasts made specifically for learners, or you can look up topics in your target language to find a podcast you might enjoy.
Music is also an amazing way to hear your target language being used. If you find an artist you like, that’s another good way to study your TL! Follow them on socials, look up interviews with them, etc.
Talk to Yourself
Any spare minute you have, talk to yourself in your target language. It doesn’t need to be out loud. You can have a conversation with yourself, try to express how you’re feeling, make up stories, or just describe the things around you in your target language. This is also a good way to see what kind of vocabulary you’re missing.
Apps
Duolingo has fired a ton of translators and started using crappy AI translations — so they’re probably not the best choice.
I’d recommend dictionary app that has some sort of flash card feature is also good, or an anki deck. Drops is good, and has a lot of languages, but keep in mind you’ll need audio. Anything that’s easy to get out and do for even just a few minutes is perfect.
Apps won’t teach you a language on their own, but doing a little every day helps remind me the language exists and keeps it in my mind.
Texting/Writing/Posting
Whether your friends know your TL or not, force them to experience it by randomly messaging in Japanese! Or, if you feel fancy, download an app like “HelloTalk”, “Tandem”, “Speaky”, “Tabee”…there are a lot.
If you keep a digital journal (like I do…inconsistently), try to write some entries in your TL.
If you have a blog, which I assume you do, post in your TL. Even if you’re a beginner, you can make a sideblog dedicated to saying stuff like “I’m hungry” and “Green is my favourite colour” in your target language.
Open your notes app and just write random words you can remember or sentences you can string together.
I know it’s really difficult, and don’t beat yourself up because you aren’t studying as hard. A language can be a lifelong companion — you’ll have phases of studying constantly, and sometimes it’ll take the back seat, but there’s no rush to learn it. Have a great day :)!

Btw if you come on holidays and stay at an AirBnb instead of an actual registered hotel I hate you personally. Not "I hate the gentrification and touristic massification and the way we can't live in our homes and are forced to move away because of tourism" in an abstract way- No, not just that. I hate you.
#I'm from a seaside town that has become popular with tourists who come for the beach and the mediterranean climate#and the typical whitewashed walls of mediterranean coastal towns#in just a few years the average rent has gone up so much that now the average rent id#*is over 1000€ per month#one thousand!#that's a whole salary!#in the past 2 years they've been building a new neighbourhood. they've destroyed the vinyeards to make a new neighbourhood that will make#the town 1/3 bigger than it is. that's a lot. but all those houses are luxury houses with private swimming pools for rich foreigners (we#already have 2 private British schools high schools and college(in the british sense)/baccalaureate where their kids go and never have to#interact with locals. I teach some of those kids and they're very prejudiced against locals and very bigoted against the catalan language#(which ofc they never bother to learn)#there's a law in catalonia that says that for every certain amount of houses you build you are obligated to build a certain percentage of#affordable housing. so in this new neighborhood they built the bare minumum affordable housing which is still too expensive for us#and since there's so few of them everyone is competing to get them. the city hall and the bank have had to make an official competition for#them but you only classify if the renr would not be more than 1/3rd of your salary which is impossible. my cousins who are in their mid 30s#and have been working a good qualified job for 15 years (and their partners too) are considered too poor to be considered for the#affordable housing#everyone is having to move out to other cities away from their friends and family and current jobs. the only jobs left here soon will be#mostly directed at tourists#and the only way to continue living here if you're a normal person and not rich is if you're an only child who one day might inherit the#parents' house#but we look around at what's happening in nearby cities and we see the next step which will be airbnb taking the houses that are left#in many places (I've posted about thia before) there aren't any flats for rent or sell anymore that isn't an airbnb#I'm still lucky in my town when compared to other places like Barcelona which are already full of the airbnb plague#actualitat#airbnb#tourism#touristic massification#gentrification
