So, I'm learning how to drive, and let's all be honest it would have been much easier when I was in my roaring teens <( ̄︶ ̄)>, high on self-confidence and my love for Fast and Furious. BUT NoW wrapped in dissatisfaction and horrors of the world, I in my anxiety fueled-twenties feel like every test drive is mY lAsT ¯\_༼ ಥ ‿ ಥ ༽_/¯.

Do you drive? If you do and what if I wanted to learn how to drive what app would you recommend? I'm trying to study the book it just isn't clicking. How do most autistic people study?
Hello Anon! Not gonna lie, this question mildly triggered me. Learning how to drive was one of the worst experiences of my entire life.
TW: Child Abuse
My mom was the parent who was here to teach me how to drive. But as people on this account well know, she was an extremely abusive woman. It took me 3.5 years to get my permit and another year to get my license, no thanks to her. On my way (Litelry driving to the place to take my test) to the exam, she threw a fit. She didn't like the way I was driving, which turns out, I drive that way because of my autism, so she threw a hissy fit in the passenger seat. She made me pull over on the side of the road because she didn't like me looking at my map while driving. So I did, and she then got out and WALKED HOME!!!
You heard me right. A grown-ass woman left her child on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and walked home. But because I only had a permit, in my state you aren't legally allowed to drive alone. So I was fucking stranded and had a panic attack. Luckily for me, my sister and my friends are amazing. They came to my rescue. My sister came and picked me up and took me to her house, and her husband (at the time, they are no longer together) went and picked up my car and drove it home for me.
Then my friend Rachel came and picked me up from my sisters house and drove me to the test. Because of covid, we weren't allowed to use our own cars for the test anyways so it ended up working out. If not for them, I still would have to take the SMART bus (Disabled bus) Everywhere.
I don't know what the driving rules are in your state, but I do know they vary slightly. But the best advice I can give is to literally just breathe. Don't overthink it when you're behind the wheel. With time you'll get really comfortable with your car. But this also means, that driving anyone else's car is literally a bitch! I fucking hate it when I have to drive a new car because the size and shape is different, you sit at a different height on the road, and all the buttons and controls are in diffenr spots.
So before you even start driving, get familiar with the vehicle. I mean really familiar, learn every button, figure out how to like your seat positioned, mirrors, air temp and music. I cannot drive without music, it makes me insane and I forgot what I'm fucking doing and dissociate heavily. Figure out how much pressure it takes to press the driving and break pedeals. Also, figure out how much time it takes you to switch between pedals. You should only be driving with your right foot, and reaction time is very important as other people drive really stupid, and you could get hurt or in trouble because of someone else's driving.
Next, study the handbook. They should give you one in your driving class. Learn all the road signs by heart. I don't know how it is in your state, but where I am, all unlabeled (roads that don't have speed signs) roads are 55 mph.
Here is a course on Defensive Driving:
Defensive Driving
Practice Exam
Other than that, practice makes perfect. Be sure to be vigilant on the road, remember you can only control what your vehicle does. If you're anxious, it's ok to pull over and collect yourself. Driving in the rain is a bit difficult at first, but at least it was for me. The windshield wipers were a bit distracting, and if it's really pouring the rain can be loud and affect your senses. So always be sure to check the weather before you leave. Drive at least 5mph under the speed limit if it is raining or there is snow. Don't worry about if someone honks at you or speeds past you, it's not personal, they are just dicks. and remember to stay safe, I believe in you. You've got this!
