Digital art is often hard when starting out, and it seems like a lot of tutorials skip things, (or I'm not paying attention, both are very plausible) so, I decided to study an artists work; In this case, it was @sm-baby, (a user of several platforms, including Tumblr).
What I concluded is that the utilization of pressure, colored lineart in particular areas (such as when two of the same color that are in contact), and (although more so in uncolored sketches) the presence of lightly colored lines on sections of the character to show detail without making it overly prominent are factors that go into digital art that is pleasurable to look at.
So, with what I learned, the image above is a sketch that utilizes those aspects that were deemed "good", from her creations.
And hey, since you're here, go check out @sm-baby's blog. Her art is good, and there was a whole anon-deeznuts situation that went down the other day, which was very entertaining.
AND HEY- To the fellow Artists that are newer to digital artwork, or don't know where to start, or [add text here], studying the techniques of others is a good way to learn, within reason of course. So, like, don't steal or anything, thats too far.

romanticize learning, not school
The education system (in the U.S. at least) sucks! School sucks!
High expectations get set on you and you exhaust yourself trying to achieve them
Often, it promotes unhealthy competition and causes you to compare yourself to other students, even though everyone has different skill sets and circumstances
Being neurodivergent makes it HELL
School doesn't DESERVE to be romanticized. Burnout sucks. You're not going "above and beyond," you're trying to push yourself into unbreathable altitudes.
Rather, consider romanticizing learning:
Researching because gaining knowledge is fun, you like how it feels to understand the world around you
Teaching because you want to spread that knowledge to others
Finding your own engaging methods
Giving yourself control. Learning because you want to.

*Kakuzu, giving math word problems to Hidan*
Kakuzu: Okay, now; say I want to buy a sweater. The sweater costs $50. I manage to talk the store owner into giving me a 25% discount. How much is the discount, and how much do I end up paying for the sweater?
Hidan: *brow furrowed, writing it down on paper*
Hidan, out-loud: A 25% discount of $50 is $12.50. So you minus $12.50 from the original price of $50, and you pay … $37.50?
Kakuzu: Very good. Alright, now what if I find a tear in the sweater, and convince him to give me another 5% discount? What am I paying then?
Hidan: You’re … paying …5% of $37.50 is about $1.87. So minus that from $37.50 and you pay … about $35.63, maybe round it up to $35.65.
Kakuzu: Very, very good, Hidan. You’re getting so good with numbers.
Hidan: Yeah, but, I still need a fucking piece of paper to figure stuff out. You do everything in your head …
Kakuzu: Hidan. You went from having trouble with simple addition and subtraction to calculating percentages. Not only that but your reading has picked up so much …
Kakuzu: *hugs Hidan* I am so, so proud of you, brat.
Hidan, blushing: T-thanks, old man. Hey, how about a reward? Like, you buy me a new blade for my scythe?
Kakuzu: A blade for your scythe? The cheapest ones are like $200!
Hidan, writing on the paper again: Actually, that one weapons shop up the road is having a sale this weekend: 60% off a purchase of $300 or more. If you buy me two new blades, at $400 total, then your discount will be … $240. Minus that from $400, and you’d only be paying … $160. That’s $40 cheaper than it’d be for one!
Hidan, grabbing Kakuzu’s hand and pulling him towards the door: Shit, you’re right; math IS fun! Come on!
Kakuzu, sighing as he grabs his wallet: I think I’ve made a mistake …
This is for you, @ama-tera 😊

It is only well after I left college that I figured out the fun of finding reasons to 'research' things. The treasure hunt of digging for something not easily found online. I'm not creative (or curious) enough for this to come up often but am delighted when I get the chance to explore the depths of a library's offerings.
Tumblr media
It's also rewarding to chase down a tight run of connections. This week's has been Dicken's Fair -> a musical about "The Naming of Uranus" -> reading about historical lady mathematicians -> visiting the Suzzallo library -> getting to use the Micro Print machine!
I'm perhaps known amongst some friends for my love of pushing the printing limits in making mini books. Imagine my awe and delight at getting to hold a micro print page! Now THIS would make a tiny book!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
100 pages per sheet and absolutely not legible with the naked eye! Pages were brought into focus (on the digital screen) by panning the tray about. Not only easy to use, it made reading more fun! The book I wanted was actually missing the first sheet- thankfully there was a scanned copy I could read on a library machine -- interesting to see the aged pages in the 'digital' version, but I much preferred reading the micro print (even though it too was delivered to me 'digitally' at the end)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I'd brought my Moment macro lens I could have taken some sweet photos (and read on my phone!) -- my new Pixel 8's macro mode just barely makes the text legible.
The initial bio on Mary Somerville I read mentioned that her writing was accessible and after reading a chunk of it for 20 minutes I heartily agree. Initially published in 1834, I'm sure there's a couple copies floating around out there (the library does have a physical copy, but it's at the off-site auxiliary and requires planning/advanced notice to get ahold of) -- makes me happy to now have a title to keep an eye out for in those rare bookshops/the collectables field.

Good Intentions?
So my mom asked me an interesting question: "Don't you ever feel like an asshole when you think you're correcting people? Especially if the thing they believe makes them happy?"
In this conversation specifically, about science and health facts, my answer is "No."
I don't feel like I'm being an asshole when I tell you the thing you believe about a health fact is wrong. I feel like I'm helping you learn the correct way to keep yourself healthy. I know I might sound like an ass, and be perceived as an ass, but I know your intentions are good, you might just be understanding 'the thing' wrong and I want to help you actually be safe.
For context: My mom has a fear of having a heart attack or stroke, but she doesn't talk to doctors or health professionals about staying healthy or safe. Instead she found this "Influencer" who gives "health advice", but this person has also been banned from Australia because their 'advice' was so wrong, it threatened peoples' health. My mom thinks eating excessive amounts of Celtic Salt will provide her with minerals that will boost her health, and EVERY TIME we talk about her salt, I tell her that she's eating so much sodium, those minerals mean nothing.
I know that often, people feel like they're being insulted when someone corrects something they say, but that's not always the case. In the above situation, I correct mom's misinformation because I know the thing she is doing, is going to greatly increase the chances of her experience the thing she's trying to avoid. I'm not mean about it, just persistent. I don't tell her she's stupid or anything. I don't really tell her "you're wrong". I remind her of a health fact she used to know as true, but has since been convinced to forget it?
I did tell her, when she asked why I keep talking about it, that "you might be lucky and nothing will happen, in which case I'm just annoying and we cannot have a good conversation about salt with each other. But a majority of cases show, the excessive amount of salt people eat can lead to greater risk of stroke or heart attack. And if you are unlucky and have an event, don't be surprised if the doctor talks to you about your salt."
I've been corrected too, but I've always thought it of someone trying to teach me something. And sometimes what they say is wrong, but I appreciate their attempt to help me. They state their case, I state mine, then I move on to another topic that we don't disagree on, but sometimes something they say has me questioning, and then I get to do more research :D
There's another guy at the homeless shelter who is giving me advice on how to start my own business. I cannot talk health facts with him because he believes changing his body's PH balance will protect him from cancer and that the oncoming eclipse is caused by excessive amounts of chemicals the government is exposing us to. He speaks so often and with so much confidence and authority, that I still feel bad voicing any opposing opinions. But I still try, sometimes.
( other side note, as a presenting woman, anything I do is often brushed aside as me "being a bitch", so very often anything I say or do is dismissed or taken with skepticism. Occasionally, I do find someone who is interested in learning and we ask questions together and do research and have good fun :) )
What do you guys think? I genuinely want to know your stance on correcting people or being corrected.

Grawlix | Definition, Mean, Use & Examples
Published on August 22, 2023 by Eoghan Ryan. Revised on October 2023.
Grawlix (also called "obscenicon" or "symbol swearing") refers to the use of typographical symbols in place of obscenity (e.g. "$%@!").
Grawlix is frequently used in comic strips to indicate that a character is thinking or saying a swear word. It's also used on social media platforms as a way to obscure inappropriate language. Grawlix can be used by itself or as part of a sentence.
Examples: Grawlix
"#$@!"
"Where the %@#! is my car? I parked it right here."
"I hate this @&#$?&! song."
[Image of the word "Grawlix" in the upper left corner in black text on a white field with three different word bubbles in the center. A square dark blue/purple/grey bubble containing "$%@#&?!" in it, a teal cloud-like bubble with a couple of smaller round bubbles next to it below the first containing "+$($>#!", and a blue, spiked bubble with a couple of action lines coming off of it to the right of the teal bubble, containing "F&!@0?&!". This is intended to be an illustration of how "Grawlix" can be depicted in an image such as in a comic strip or comic book. The logo for Scribbr is in the lower right corner.]

I think I’d have so much more fun learning if I wasn’t paying money to do it. And being graded with timelines. I just want to know more. But I hate that it is inevitably a stressful experience to do so in a university setting.

How Prevent Gifted Kid Burnout From a Gifted Silly whose Fire is still Blazing with Rage
1. EVERYTHING IS STUPID.
School is stupid, parents with unrealistically high expectations of you are stupid, teachers who overwork you are stupid.
You don't need their approval. You don't need to impress authority to have worth.
You don't need to be perfect, especially not in a broken system.
Test scores aren't a measure of intelligence. You are smart, even if the material was difficult to grasp.
You're not "wasting your potential" if you decide to pursue a career you love. Create art, write music, perform, you're contributing to the beauty of the world. There's more value in that than most people see.
You're not "wasting your potential" if you're an adult who isn't busting their butt in college or a fancy job. The economy is fucked right now, and being an adult is hard. You're doing your best.
And sometimes, you can't be at your best all the time, but you're trying, and that's all that matters.
2. Don't let school ruin a passion for learning.
Just learn. Learn and love learning. Learn without school holding you down. Find your passions, and run after them. Pursue knowledge because it's fucking fun.
Research something you care about for fun, challenge yourself to learn how to complete that math problem, learn, not because you feel like you have to, but because you want to.
Never let school make you lose a love for learning.
3. They explain it more effectively than I can lol
I made a video game metaphor but, when I was finding the video that made me realize this I read another video game metaphor that explained it better, "So basically, as a gifted kid, I skipped the tutorial because it felt too easy. Then the actual game threw curveballs at me" (adorablehoe, 2nd top comment).

Fun Grammar Lesson:  Nonetheless vs Nevertheless
Ever wonder the difference between Nonetheless vs Nevertheless, if you’d like to read more I’ve linked below where i got this direct quote but i think the simple and fun, modern lesson below it will help you be able to easily apply it to real world, nevertheless you may not forget it now. <3
- Nevertheless: means in spite of that. - Nonetheless: means in contrast to. - Nonetheless is used to indicate something that can be measurably quantified, while nevertheless is used in reference to a situation that either has, is or might occur - https://askanydifference.com/difference-between-nonetheless-and-nevertheless/  - https://grammarist.com/compound-words/nevertheless-vs-nonetheless/
Ex: Nonetheless
Namjoon said to Jimin, “Ya got no jams.” Then Jimin replied,” Nonetheless, Army thinks I have jams.”
(Here the jams are used as the
‘something that can be measurably quantified’
that we are saying and amount in contrast to. We can understand it better by breaking it off at just none or never to check. Seeing as
“Jimin has none”
sounds correct, whereas
 “you have never”
would be incorrect and sounds it. None means not one, that's another great way to remember and try in place of the word to indicate if it sounds right. Carrying this through the example to show this, it sounds fine to say
“Jimin, you have not one (or a single) jam.”
How Jimin contrasts this is by confirming that, while the facts are that Namjoon says he has none, with the word
 ‘nonetheless’,
in the same breath (word) Jimin is saying Namjoon is indicating that Namjoons’ measurement/amount/number of jams that he says he has is none. But, contrasts this fact by saying,
in spite
of Namjoon feeling that true, Army thinks the opposite, indicating he has some (at least in others opinion-based measurements.))
______________________
Ex: Nevertheless
Henry said he’d take us on a nice, scenic walk. Nevertheless, he failed to mention it’d end with murdering his longtime friend.
(A good rule for this word is to replace it with ‘however’ to see if it sounds right. So, let's give that a try with the example,
“Henry said he’d take us on a nice, scenic walk. However, he failed to mention it’d end with murdering his longtime friend.”
Yup, sounds right! We’re contrasting the idea of this event occurring as was stated. While the event is did happen it was contrary to what was told to them. Henry said the walk would be a nice, scenic walk, which wasn’t entirely true. We indicate this in the word ‘nonetheless’.)
I hope this helps and was fun for you! <3 Keep staying curious and learning a bit of something new every day! <3

So about the 6/2(1+2) thing
It's interesting, cuz rather than being purely a mathematical "solve this right or you're dumb" thing, it shows the divide in how Maths are taught and how it has changed throughout time!
Turns out, in the current system that we use, PEMDAS, the correct answer would be 9. That is because PEMDAS doesn't only account for only the operation itself, but also the order in which they're written, left to right.
Tumblr media
Meaning that 6÷2x3 gives a different result than 2x3÷6. The order left to right matters, rather than multiplication being first always regardless of position.
Why do people get to 1 then? Because back in the early 20th century, it didn't matter. A lot of people used typewriters to type math stuff, and they used / as a shorthand for ÷, and that leads to a different order of operation. Although outdated by mathematicians, this method is still taught in many schools (it's the one I learned [and I'm not from America before you say anything]), so only some people are privy to the information that this is supposed to give 9 as an answer.
Not really surprising, a lot of school curriculums aren't up to date with the latest information, and unless you specialize in mathematics as an adult, why the hell would you go out of your way to learn about all the updates. I haven't looked at a periodic table since I was 16, I've no idea if they added more little bitches to that thing and frankly I don't care. But isn't it fun to learn new stuff together~?
