Kwiaty polne - field flowers
Kwiaty polne or polne kwiaty? There are a few rules concering adjectives in Polish language.
I. Adjective must always match (by gender, grammatical number and grammatical case) the noun it describes.
Kwiat polny - (one) field flower
Kwiat (flower) - singular, masculine, Nominative
polny ( adj., field) - singular, masculine, Nominative
Nie ma tu żadnych kwiatów polnych (plural, genitive) - there are no field flowers here.
II. Thanks to declension, we can shuffle words in a sentence quite freely, because the endings tell you what is each word's function.
So we can make Yoda-like sentences, but of course you would rather find them in poetry than in everyday life.
Różowy (pink) miałem w ręku kwiat (flower) - I had a pink flower in my hand.
The usual patern however is adjective + noun. The most common phrasing of the sentence above would be "Miałem w ręce różowy kwiat".
So why kwiaty polne (noun+adjective) and not polne kwiaty (adjective + nound). Well, both versions are quite ok and common, but the meaning is slightly different.
III. Noun + adjective pattern is used to talk about proper names or scientific / quasi - scientific names of species, minerals, products etc, while adjective+noun pattern is used to describe the individual characteristics of the object.
With "kwiaty polne and polne kwiaty" the difference is very subtle, but let's see another examples
przyprawa meksykańsa - mexican seasoning - that sounds like a product name, a seasoning made according to special recipe
meksykańska przyprawa - any mexican seasonig that comes from Mexico,
królik biały - white rabbit - a rabbit beloning to a race called "white rabbit"
biały królik - you simply describe that this particular rabbit is white, it might be some kind of wild rabbit of undefine race

Polish pronunciation tips
Pronouncing trzy (three):
If you're struggling with this, it may be because you're trying to say it like t-rzy, when really it is said t-szy. This is because putting an unvoiced consonant before a voiced one causes devoicing, so the consonant cluster becomes unvoiced. If you don't know what voicing in consonants is:
So a word such as żabka ("froggie", also the name of a major retailer) is said like żapka. Another thing to note is that the t in trzy must be pronounced distinctly and not said as if the word is czy (if, or, question marker).
Ę and ą - why do they sometimes sound like e and o?
A development in the Polish language is the loss of nasalization on ę and ą, particularly at the ends of words. This isn't universal across Poland, but it will be common enough that you should know it.
Ę and ą are nasalized except for when at the end of words. So mężczyzna (man) is said menżczyzna but piję (I drink) is pronounced like pije. Likewise, skąd (from where) is said skond but piją (they drink) like pijo.

Sunday, Polish, 26/02/23
(One of these days I'll get back to the rhythm of doing this *before* I go to bed 🙃)
You, is 'Wy'
They, is 'Oni'
We like, is 'Lubimy'
You like, is 'Lubicie'
(They (plural)) like, is 'Lubią'
I speak/say, is 'Mówię'
I have, is 'Ja mam'
You have, is 'Wy macie'
(He/she) is drinking, is 'pije'
(He/she) is eating, is 'je'
Goodnight, is 'Dobranoc'
Goodbye, is 'Do widzenia'
Just another small lesson methinks! I'll get better at remembering to do this I swear 😭 on the plus side I'm definitely learning and making these notes helps retain the knowledge! As I mentioned yesterday, I've started looking back on previous notes to refresh myself, and that's working too (although I apparently only had one day's worth of notes? I thought I had more)

Rhymes not working in other languages is truly a tragedy
But at the same time, it means new rhyming possibilities when I'm speaking another language
So mixed feelings
Also is this just a me thing or are signs that are really similar the equivalent of rhyming in sign language? Just the same vibes to me

He has cookies, is 'On ma ciasteczka'
We have, is 'Mamy'
The woman and the man have a child, is 'Kobieta i mężczyzna mają dziecko'
You speak, is 'Mówisz'
I speak, is 'Ja mówię'
Good morning, is 'dzień dobry'
Welcome, is 'Witaj'
Please, is 'Proszę'
Thank you, is 'Dziękuję'
He is, is 'On jest'
I am, is 'Ja jestem'
Slowly coming to understand how the spelling works! Setting my keyboard so it can autocorrect for other languages kinda feels like cheating 😂 but it is helping me learn the grammar! I can focus on the different word endings more than remembering each specific word separately (like with french, if i learn ils -ent, nous -ons, vous -ez etc, then i dont have to memorise every single verb or every grammatical scenario)
Sidenote, im also getting the hang of making these posts! I'm making the notes more clear, and listed in a way that makes more sense to read back on rather than just listing the next sentence duolingo gives me. Overcoming the hurdles one by one 💪
Sidenote two: for whatever reason tumblr likes to set this as my main blog sometimes so when i go to reblog a dumb meme or poll i'll send it here by accident 😭😭 if anyone notices before i do just send me an ask (like 'hey eli check your reblogs' or something) and i'll fix it up, it's been getting annoying and i really want to keep this blog clean
