Rebel's first adventure hike. She had to navigate rocks, snowed out trails, off-trail snow scramble (which was admittedly much easier for Aayla and Rebel than it was for us humans) and overall just more than the well worn trails she is used to.

She walked for 85% of the 3.4 mile hike and spent over half of it loose while dragging her leash! She is doing fantastic with choosing to follow us and keep up. It was great just being able to drop the leash and let he navigate the tougher terrain while us humans slid around on the ice.

She got a bit upset a few times when the snow was deeper and inconsistent between hard ice and breaking through to the deeper snow. Asked to be carried once in the middle after a hard section.

hm. im not very big on new years resolutions, they're too much pressure. but... perhaps i can handle new years Desires

this year i want to complete a lil comic, fan-based or otherwise. i'd like to also complete some sort of storyboard/animatic thing. i want to develop a coloring style that i can be proud of. i want to get to a point with my dragons where they can have a coherent story & world to live in. i want to think of so many fun, trivial facts about my characters. i want to post more about them. i want to write and post an original thing, be it 1k words or 10k. i want to finish the rough draft of a book i outlined. i want to be kinder to myself. i want to create more gift art for others. i want to put more effort & care & love into my art. i want to force myself into the world and figure out how to live. i want to make an irl friend. try a new craft - scrapbooking, maybe, or making an enamel pin. i want to finish that last commission and make a new sheet for more. i want to be freer with myself. i want to finish at least three fics. i want to go whale watching again. i want to improve my art, especially in the matter of drawing people. i want to bake something tasty and share it with the neighbors. i want to be content with existing. i want to have more good things in life to list on bad days. i want to build a birdhouse.

like. you are a stranger. there is no way of knowing if your dog really is trained of if youre just saying that so no one calls you out. leash your goddamn dog

I want my parents to get a cat, for obvious reasons.

the problem is: my dad doesn't want a cat.

Why doesn't he want a cat? I'm glad you asked. It's because he still thinks his childhood cat was the untimative cat and only if i can procure a cat of equal cat-ness would he accept it.

Now here's the kicker. I asked what a 'proper cat' means in that case

and he tells me:

it should be rather independant (like his childhood cat)

it should have a solid, round face and snout (like his childhood cat)

it should be of the striped variety, ideally (like his childhood cat)

should have a bushy tail (you know the drill)

oh, if we're at it, it should have round ears, not pointy ones 'like a dog'

At which point anyone who knows remotely anything about cats might have given pause like me, because i had to look this man in the eyes and ask him "...did your cat have a noticable black stripe over the lower back?"

Which he couldn't really remember anymore but said it's quite possible.

so when I show him a picture of a EUROPEAN WILDCAT he goes "Oh, that looks just like him! Where did you find that?"

you don't know how much this interaction haunts me. i am haunted by the ghost of a possible-wildcat that somehow got trained into accompanying my dad's family to hikes on a leash and that set incredibly unattainable standards for cat-rearing in his mind.

and even if he misremembers and that cat only coincidentally LOOKED like a wildcat, that still makes finding something like it incredibly difficult.

but there's no pics of the cat in question so I guess I shall never know

One year ago this little lady was born! The past 8 months with her have been such a wonderful adventure she is really everything we had hoped for when getting a cat. Love her big personality so much! She has grown a lot in her time with us and I can't wait to see all the adventures we go on together.

whenever people say "I let my cat(s) go outside because I feel like I'm restricting their freedom by keeping them in the house" I love saying

"Yeah that's kinda how I feel about having a 4 year old. I don't want to take away his freedom to explore nature. He's smart enough to stay away from cars, so I let him out every now and then. He knows how to find his way back home so he's fine!"

because really.... it's not that much different. In fact, I think a four year old child would be less likely to get hit by a car than a cat.

Your cat isn't "too smart" to avoid animal traps, cars, abusive people, poison traps, other animals, etc. If your outdoor cat goes missing? It's either because:

someone assumed your cat was lost and either A) took your cat to a shelter or B) adopted the cat as their own.

they're fucking dead. you let them roam around places where giant, fast, animal-flattening vehicles regularly pass through. And if you live away from the city, where there aren't as many roads, then your cat was snatched up by coyotes or other wildlife. I've been there.

If it's not those two, and the cat is simply just choosing not to come back, it's because you fucking suck as a cat owner and they don't want you.

Getting your cat vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered isn't done to make it "safe" for them to go outside. It's done as a preventative measure in case your cat accidentally gets outside.

And if you're letting your cat outdoors with no vaccinations and the ability to reproduce, you are causing problems for EVERYONE because now your cat is having babies with other stray cats that will be running around spreading diseases and having more and more babies that will do the same. And most of those cats will more than likely have to be put down. So don't be that person.

Keep your cats indoors.
