the fact that i’ve seen like multiple people say that Spock and Chapel having a previous relationship makes their TOS “relationship” deeper and, specifically, that her love confession in The Naked Time is more romantic with this context
if that’s what you think romance is i honestly don’t want to hear your opinions on any ships/relationships ever again
because if we broke up over 8 years ago and you’re still flirting with me to the point of borderline harassment i’m getting a restraining order, i don’t care how much you ‘loved’ me

god the way i think about the star trek reboot movies and yes i know that they do have their fair share of early twenty-first century not-so-great-ness (ie. whitewashed khan as played be benedict cucumberbund, jim kirk copping a feel on uhura’s chest), but god how i get so angry because not only does it have an astounding cast (leonard nimoy himself talking about how the crew is so alive, also how he gets emotional talking about how karl urban, for a second, is so like the late deforest kelley nah man i can’t do this right now), and a fantastic score (i hear labor of love and enterprising young men and i can feel my soul ascending to the stars), but also how the concept introduced by the first movie is actually so accidentally metal because what if i told you that there’s a rip in time and space, and yet the same people will still find each other! what if i told you that the star trek reboot movies still accidentally go into the idea of how, no matter the universe, no matter the weird things that fall into the timeline, you will always be able to meet your best friend and you will always be able to meet the people who ground you and who make you better what if i told you about something really rather lovely about how the star trek reboot movies is still grounded in this idea that you will always meet your chosen family and your chosen loves, like ! ! ! god ! ! !

it’s not jim’s fault that the enterprise is involved in some intergalactic disaster every other week. the enterprise is considered like the flagship of the federation so starfleet sends them on the most insane missions and MAYBE jim does not need to be full sending every time but he is MY malewife. aos kirk more than tos but the point still stands.

Imagine this. You're Spock. You've tried not to get yourself emotionally involved with your crewmates. It's not going very well. Your doctor goes and contracts a terminal illness and doesn't tell you (but luckily your captain can't go three seconds without breaking Space HIPAA or whatever exists in the future) and then tries to run away and die on an asteroid. You take out the Instrument of Obedience, privately thinking that it would be nice to have some control over this maniac you somehow care about's actions. You spend Surak knows how much time downloading and translating an entire civilization's medical library to cure him. No problem. It was just an incurable disease. You didn't need to sleep this month.
Two episodes later, another alien civilization tries to check said doctor out like he's a library book and then writes "withdrawn" on his forehead and pretends they don't have to give him back. He tells you to leave to save yourself; he'll stay. Did you mention you decoded an entire medical archive like two weeks ago for---fine. You go through unspeakable emotional violations to put him back into circulation on the Enterprise. It's cool. You didn't need your dignity anyway.
Two episodes after that, your illogical, self-sacrificial doctor mutinies and sedates you--the ranking officer in charge--undoing the fact that, again, how many hours did you spend? Curing an incurable illness because you couldn't let him die? Singing like an idiot in front of a bunch of snickering Platonians with laurel leaves on your head and no pants to speak of?--so he can get himself tortured to death on your behalf. You convince an empath to save him. He pushes her away because he "can't destroy life." Your captain is crying. The shiny force field shows everyone that you're having very non-shiny emotions. Do Vulcans even believe in hell
You think you've finally reached some sort of sacrificial detente. It's been a while. Neither of you have died on the other's behalf. You've both had to save your captain a few times, but that's normal. All in a day's work. Then said captain wants all three of you to check out a mysteriously abandoned library of time periods. You should have figured you would wind up in some sort of frozen wasteland with your doctor and no perceivable way to return what you'd borrowed. Well. At least there's the two of you so that you can keep an eye on--
He falls down in the snow. His hands are blue. "Go on without me," he says, dramatically. "Alone, you have a chance."
yeah I'd strangle that fucker against a cave wall too

Spones fake romance subplots that make me want to write normal star trek episode scripts (can you imagine?),
Spock is required to battle some alien thing, and spend the night beforehand alone under alien observation. He was injured so Kirk is desperate for McCoy to get access to him. Kirk finds out that spouses are the exception and insists that Spock and McCoy are married. They have to act married with absolutely no chance to set boundaries or communicate what they're doing beyond a hasty whisper
On some planet and they do something together that the culture accept as a proposal (walking through an archway, getting excited about the same xenobiology thing, whatev) and no matter what Spock and McCoy say the aliens believe they're newly engaged and insist on throwing a party in their honour. Kirk tells them to play along please, they're so excited and it's making things easier. Also it's hilarious.
They need to travel through alien space that requires all people in their space be married (cultural thing about single people being half a person, not able to hold a job). Spock and McCoy team up cos neither of them want to, but at least the Vulcan privacy customs will mean they don't have to PDA. Unfortunately, they keep having to attend diplomatic dinners and Kirk insists they at least compliment each other occasionally, ffs
The enterprise is in trouble for some fuckery and everyone is on their best behaviour. Spock and McCoy get caught fighting somewhere inappropriate within starfleet because they weren't paying attention to where they were walking. While getting a dressing down Spock knows the admiral telling them off is a romantic so he says that he and McCoy were kissing. McCoy, head in hands, cannot disagree or it'll make things worse. "Yep, we were making out." So they have to play a couple from then. Kirk loves it. He involves it in their trial defence.
Classic hiding from the cops on some planet behaviour and in order to give themselves an alibi for being found in a cupboard they make out. They then have to, individually in their interrogation cells, try and guess what romantic backstory the other would be spinning and do their best to match it. They do a terrible job
They go to a conference together and get cheaper tickets by applying for the travel as a pair. They put themselves down as colleagues on everything, but when they get to the cruise they're in the honeymoon suite and an attendant politely advises them to play along or they'll be bumped to the next ship. McCoy finds a way to deeply enjoy every moment until things actually get a little bit romantic and then he's super uncomfortable. Spock appears unaffected (he's very affected).
McCoy starts addressing Spock by Vulcan pet names to be a shit stirrer and some diplomat overhears it and deduces that they're secretly dating. Lots of the diplomat finding ways to leave the two of them alone, but Spock and McCoy are none the wiser and just enjoy a squabble. Ep ends with the diplomat winking at them as they all stare blankly, before being transported away
Similar, but post Katra some Vulcan assumes that Spock and McCoy were married and asks all these questions about it over dinner, but doesn't outright say it so everyone's just answering the weird questions as honestly as they can. Nothing they say makes it clear that they aren't dating until like the end of the dinner. McCoy loses his shit about it
Spock is required to mindmeld with McCoy for some plot reason, the aliens they're with think it's awesome and are like!! Can you do that on everyone!!! So cool! So Spock is like, "nope, only McCoy. Because... We're... Married?" And McCoy will always support Spock in a consent thing, and mind melds are v invasive for him, but even so. They're only on the planet for the first like fifteen min, the rest is them on the ship with McCoy making endless fun of Spock over it
Someone is hitting on McCoy but he's not keen. Lets her down easy by saying he's seeing someone. Spock wanders by as this convo is wrapping up and due to convoluted shit pretends he's the someone. McCoy is grateful, but very annoyed about how it all worked out really. But when they have a fight the lady shoots her shot again so McCoy gets like romantic about it to keep the story alive
Actually hell yeah, what's your favourite?

A non-comprehensive list of the various nicknames Donna uses for her family members
Oi, you lot: literally any group of 2+ people
Love, dear: Shaun, Doctor, Rose, and occasionally the Tardis
Lovie, darling, treasure: Rose exclusive, said with full conviction and sincerity.
Major/Major Mott: Grandad, expected to be responded to with a salute and a "general" or "general noble"
Mother: this is not a nickname this is a warning
Sylvie: this is not a nickname this is being a fuckin nuisance. Much more common when she was a teenager but she still occasionally whips it out
Mom, said with bad exaggeratted american accent: meant to still be annoying but in a much more playful way
Mummy: exceedingly rare, but said out of genuine vulnerability and hurt and sometimes someone really does just need their mum. Said the most frequently after dad passed away
Hon: Shaun and Doctor
Honey: Shaun and Rose
Bumblebee: Doctor exclusive, because he's always buzzin about
Babe (genuine): Shaun
Babe (sarcastic): Doctor
Sexy, hot stuff, good lookin': always shaun, 50/50 on whether it's just to fluster him via flirting or if it's because she's cruisin' for some smoochin'. Frequent enough that everyone else knows to quietly leave the room if they hear these
Weatherman: This one's Shaun, actually, for when his head's in the clouds
Sha sha: Shaun, his baby niece used to call him that and everyone else thinks it's adorable, usually Donna uses it when she's trying to convince him to let her spoil Rose
Star eyes: Shaun, for being one of the most starry eyed people she knows. This is said when she's feeling extremely fond and sappy about him
Dumbo, dipstick, idiot, dunce, prawn etc: Doctor, during fairly obvious cases
Clark Kent: Doctor, when he puts the specs on
E.T, Spock, Data, Marvin the Martian: Doctor, when he is pointedly distinguishing himself from humans
Dr. McCoy, Sherlock, Inspector Gadget, Nutty Professor: Doctor, when she's 95% he's bullshitting something
Betty: Shaun and Doctor, whom she refuses to tell the reason behind. she alone knows it's actually short for better half

-He would looove to hear you compliment him any time of the day
-Most definitely melts at your touch and it's obvious
-bro legit sucks at hiding it, tbh it’s kind of adorable lol
-Oh especially when you oh so barely touch his hands or his ears, like your ghosting over them, and he's putty in your hands lol
-He can’t handle anyone else touching him tho
-Will. Not. Leave you alone
-I’m being dead serious
-Like sure he may look like he enjoys his solitude more than the average person
-But he loves to be around the people he loves most
-Even if he’s not directly interacting with them, he just likes being in the same room
-If you’re just reading together on the couch in silence together?? Bros enjoying every bit of it
-AND IF YOU OCCASIONALLY TOUCH HIS HAND EVERY NOW AGAIN??
-His face is probably a bright green shade the whole time
-I will die on the hill that Spock loves being touchy with people he deeply trusts and loves

-Hotel? Trivago.
-Shoulder Grip™️ almost every day
-Mostly cuz that’s how’s he likes to pull you in for a kiss
-Loves and I mean LOVES leaving small love bites on you, especially on places only he can see. It makes it feel more intimate to him
-If you ever bandage him up after he’s hurt, he insists that you kiss where it hurts (according to him it instantly heals it)
-Also asks Bones to back him up on that
(Spoiler: he doesn’t)
-This man gives the best hugs, they’re literally so warm and cozy and I will die on that hill

spock & jim factbook:
spock is the messy nepo baby rich kid who is popular (despite hating it), and jim is the military brat nerd with steel dedication and no social life. this makes spock super reserved and jim super outgoing
spock pretends to follow rules but breaks them constantly bc he's got Ambassador is my Dad privilege on the DL and jim pretends to break rules but actually cares SO much about them it hurts bc Starfleet is the closest he'll ever get to knowing his Dad and no matter how much he wants to disobey, he just wants to make him proud
spock has medical trauma and dyslexia, jim has survivor's guilt and likely eating disorder
jim always picks black in chess, spock picks white which surprises them both
spock calls his mom every night, jim wishes he could (rip winona)
spock has zero game because he's so used to being an observed Object of Interest and jim has effortless game because he's so used to having to fight for what he wants - they both feel inadequate bc of it
spock is surprised to see jim's room is devoid of personality as if he might have to leave at any moment. he brings jim a few things. a woven blanket from the artisans his mother patrons. an extra pillow he found. essential oils of vulcan plants in the shower nook. a small peace idol he brought back from the sacred desert caves as a teenager - and tucks it next to jim's bedside lamp.
jim is surprised to see spock's notebooks are messy and overflowing with black marks and scribbles - drawings of butterflies or... birds? winged angels. he thinks maybe this is spock's version of screaming. when he sees a nice notebook - leatherbound, old-fashioned - he leaves it in spock's room as a gift.
they're both fundamentally good people and try very hard
when they shake hands for the first time, they stand as two people facing each other - alone.
but the grip lasts longer than it should, is less appropriate than decorum warrants
for some reason they cant let go
like finding a buoy in the endless sea of stars
so jot that down 💅

Why I like Kirk so much and why I think he didn’t resonate as much with general audiences as Spock did
I think what Gene Roddenberry and the rest of the tos crew underestimated is how powerful knowledge of a character can be when they thought Kirk would be popular over Spock. As season 1 progresses while you do get information about both Kirk and Spock peppered through out, how much and how it’s conveyed is important.
Spock is Stoic yes, but surprisingly he talks about his past and what it means to be Vulcan a lot. And other characters comment on Vulcans too like McCoy describing where a Vulcan heart is. Even moving onto season 2, when Spock truly, desperately, does not want to explain what Pon Farr is or that Sarek is his father, he admits these things under pressure. And all of this information is what’s gives the audience an idea of what informs his actions.
Jim Kirk however, despite being very outgoing and charismatic, very rarely talks about himself. With few exceptions, every time you do learn something about his past it’s because someone else explains it or points it out. You’ve got where no man has gone before where Gary talked about their academy days, The naked time while Spock talked about his regrets, Kirk vents that he wants a personal connection and then is literally the only person who is able to will the virus to stop effecting him (on his own I mean) just long enough for McCoy to give him the cure.
The Android copy of Kirk tells us about Kirk’s brother Sam, in Conscience of the king literally everyone except Kirk explains his tragic tarsus iv backstory, we never find out who the Ruth girl is in shore leave, and it’s Bones that brings up Sam lives on Deneva. Even in season 2 in the worst episode ever, the deadly years, when Kirk is in a room alone with his ex fiancé, she explains their history. Not Kirk.
This man is allergic to talking about himself I love it.
Edit: Whenever Jim does even sorta talk about his past, it’s always in the context of what the other people he’s talking to know about it. Take Tarsus IV. Spock tells Jim that he checked the same library records. So when Jim finally opens up at the end of the conversation, it’s information Spock and Bones already know. “I saw him [Kodos] once, 20 years ago.” Then about 10 minutes later when he’s talking with Kodos and trying to get proof, he gives Kodos a copy of the speech Jim heard him read 20 years ago. Saying that he memorized the words. Again, these are things only the two of them would know about. It’s not something Jim exclusively went through.
Then later in Obsession when Jim is talking about his prior experience with the fog, everything he references was in the report he made after the Farragut disaster that he knows Spock and Bones read. There is no new information he reveals about what happened to him or even how he felt about it. Bones has to be the one to say Jim was wrecked with guilt because at the end of the day, Jim will never willingly talk about his past without knowing or thinking the other person he’s talking to has the same information. He will not reveal anything new 95% of the time.
Anyway back to the old blog.
While I’d argue conscience of the king does most of the work you would ever need to explain why Kirk is the way he is, the fact is we don’t learn much about his past through him. Instead it’s Kirk’s actions that inform our understanding of him. Which on some level I like a lot. It’s rare that a tv series doesn’t lean heavily into some tragic backstory explaining why a character acts the way they do. But it isn’t just he doesn’t have multiple tragic backstories. It’s what we know nothing about his past in general. Ffs we didn’t learn he grew up in Iowa until Star Trek IV. It might not even be Riverside! That town just claimed it for themselves and everyone rolled with it.
Edit: SNW did confirm after almost 40 years that riverside is Kirk’s birthplace.
The audience never truly closes the gap with Kirk because he never willingly opens up (at least where I am in the show idk maybe the movies change this) So comparatively Spock just had more going on.

Little cute kinda prompt: Kirk loves coming up with the silliest sappiest nicknames to get his Vulcan to blush hehe 💜💜💜
"Babe," Jim says to the ceiling.
"No."
"Darling?" At the affronted silence, Jim tries: "Baby doll?"
Spock huffs. "I believe you are intentionally making them worse."
Jim rolls over to his stomach, flopping an arm over Spock's bare chest with a groan. "You're the one intentionally vetoing every endearment I come up with."
"Then I suggest," Spock kisses the tip of Jim's nose, so close to his face, "that you find a suitable one."
"A suitable one?"
"One that encompasses our relationship."
Jim thinks on it for a moment. Grins in the wake of a complicated puzzle, one that he can turn over in his hand like a Rubik's cube. "Challenge accepted, then."
The first attempt: on the bridge. "Thank you, gorgeous," Jim says to Spock as he hands him a PADD, smiling beatifically. Spock's glare makes his smile drop.
Second: as Spock comes out of the shower, Jim throwing a towel on his wet hair and murmuring, "Hello, sexy," to which he receives a "Absolutely not."
Third: in the rec room, as him and Spock play chess while Bones reads in the corner. "Checkmate, sugar," he purrs, to which Spock simply stands and walks away from.
"The hell are you doing?" Bones asks over his book.
Jim sighs as he sets the pieces back on the board. "Trying to find something more romantic to say in bed rather than 'Spock'."
Bones stares into the middle distance for a moment. Looks back down at his book. "I don't know why I ask."
"He's shooting down every one," Jim protests. "I don't know what to do."
"You stop dicking around and find one he actually likes," Bones snaps. "And leave me out of it while you do."
Jim hums. Considers. "What do you think about—"
Raising a hand, not looking up from his book, Bones says, "Leave. Me. Out of it."
Jim tries a few more over the next few days ("Sweetheart", which was close; "Honey", which was worse; "Bae," to try what the kids are into). None worked. Each one made Jim more and more convinced that Spock may just break up with him to get Jim to stop trying.
Shore leave came, and Jim rents them a modest little cabin in the middle of a field of wildflowers and wood to apologize. A lake spreads far and clear a few miles from the cabin, with a little overgrown path leading to it. Jim finds Spock there one morning, taking notes in his PADD as he observes a few errant wildflowers growing in the crack of a boulder.
"This planet is fascinating," he says as Jim approaches, knowing it's Jim by his footsteps alone. "The flora grows where you wouldn't think it to be. The soil is fertile, and yet these wildflowers chose the sandy cracks of this boulder. Almost in spite of the conditions."
Jim grins, sticking his hands in his pockets, observing Spock's crouched position, the curve of his shoulders. He knows them like old friends by now; could draw his lines by memory.
"Beloved," he says, too soft for human ears to hear, but perfect for a Vulcan's.
Spock turns his head, mouth slightly agape. His cheeks are getting that adorable green tint that Jim loves to be the cause of.
Jim smiles. The sun is warm on his back as he holds out a hand to Spock, helping him up, running a finger down Spock's flushed cheek. "Is this suitable, Mr. Spock?"
Spock's kiss comes fierce and surprising. It takes Jim's breath away as Spock pulls back, his hand folding into Jim's. "Quite acceptable," he breathes.

In a Sea of Stars
James Kirk, lately captain of the USS Enterprise, stood alone on the Bridge of his first and finest command. His bags were packed, his cabin empty, and his heart was heavy.
The day that he’d been dreading for months—had been refusing even to think about, in fact—had finally arrived. Plenty of the members of his crew were thrilled and relieved to be home again, and he understood that. Most of them had enjoyed their five year adventure well enough, those of them who had survived, despite (or perhaps because of) its perils and unpredictability. Now, however, they were eager to get on with their lives and careers. They had friends and family to see after what felt like a lot longer than five years away. Some of them couldn’t get off the ship fast enough.
But the captain wasn’t among them. Except for his nephew Peter, orphaned in Deneva early into their mission, Kirk had no family waiting for him down on Earth. There were people he would enjoy visiting—longtime friends, former classmates, even old flames. And sure, it would be wonderful to walk in the warm sunlight and the fresh air safe in the knowledge that nothing alien and potentially deadly lurked behind every rock. Yes, he would happily have taken a few weeks of Terran shore leave.
If only it was shore leave!
When they’d entered spacedock the day before, a chipper voice had come over the intercom and said, “Welcome home, Enterprise!” Some of the Bridge crew had cheered. Kirk, though, had felt more like crying. Trading his ship for a return to Earth wasn’t a homecoming for him, because over the last five years, the Enterprise had become his home. His officers, especially his Bridge crew, had likewise become a surrogate for his lost family. And now, their five years together—ship, crew, and captain—were finally at an end.
They had faced torture and death and every kind of unknown alongside one another; had worked and eaten, laughed and cried, cheek by jowl. Kirk had lost Sam, the brother he’d idolized since childhood, but he’d gained a brother in Spock, whom he trusted above anyone else in the galaxy, and his friendship with Leonard McCoy had deepened into something fraternal as well. The thought of continuing his career without either of them by his side made him feel disoriented and even a little bit helpless. He wanted to reach for their hands, Spock’s and Bones’ and Scotty’s and the rest, and say Don’t let go! Don’t leave me!
Kirk sank into his chair (only it’s not mine anymore, is it?) without even meaning to and put his face in his hands. Without the people he’d grown to love, the ship he also loved meant nothing. But the idea of a new ship and a new crew was even less appealing. His future hadn’t seemed this nebulous since the deaths of his parents.
