Lost in Translation - Donghae (SuJu) Imagine
Requested by anon: Hi, can I make a request of Donghae and reader vacationing in Mexico and donghae speaking/trying to speak Spanish with reader (Latina/Latin heritage) :) As in that TikTok where they tried talking to the hotel waiter through Google translate and Ryeowook telling him he was crazy for him in Spanish without knowing the actual meaning 🤣🤣 thank u so much!!! 💙
Word Count: 388 words
A/n: I nixed the accents because I don't know how to write in Spanish very well (where my heritage learners at?). I don't think that will be an issue, but if it is and I can set some time aside to ask my mom (the mother chicken and most adorable woman i know, sorry @iamthecabbage to help me with the accents. Translations are at the end of the post!
“Amo a tu novia,” Donghae said confidently looking at you from across the table.
“You like my- wait what?” you asked, unsure if you had heard him correctly - or rather if he had actually intended to say that he liked your girlfriend.
“Amo a tu novia,” he repeated with an even bigger smile on his face. “It means I like you, my girlfriend right?”
“You like my girlfriend?”
His eyes widened as he yanked his phone out of his pocket and unlocked it, reading whatever it was he had typed or looked up how to say. As his eyes scanned the screen, his brows raised, mouth forming an ‘o’ shape. You let out a small chuckle knowing how much Donghae was trying to learn and speak Spanish to fend on his own during your vacation. Despite being adamant that you had no problem taking the reigns and handling everything he wouldn’t stop - even if it was at his own expense in public.
The Spain Spanish words that would get spit out in the translations often left the locals looking at him as if he’d grown a third head before you stepped in. But even then, they too could see the effort and hard work he was putting in.
“You could just ask me to translate what you want to say,” you said looking at him softly. “I don’t mind. And you can be sure that you’ll be saying something correctly with the Spanish spoken here.”
He smiled sheepishly, scratching his neck before sighing, “I just want to surprise you sometimes. Say something - preferably correct - and see the smile you get on your face when I say something perfectly, without you expecting it.”
Your heart fluttered. You understood the feeling completely. The same smile he was describing was the same smile you always aimed to get when you were first learning to speak Korean. The way his eyes lit up after every phrase you said - admitted very childlike as you were first starting - was something you would never forget and would want to remember forever. That pride and pure, innocent love he looked at you in those moments.
“Crees que me puedes ensenar mas?” he asked softly, unsure of himself as he finished speaking. “Did I say that right?”
“Yes, you did,” you responded. “Y me encantaría ensenarte mas.”
Translations:
Amo a tu novia - I like your girlfriend
Crees que me puedes ensenar mas - Do you think you can teach me more
Y me encantaría ensenarte mas - I would love to teach you more
