Outrageous and Terrifying
Have you ever had one of those days where the universe just suddenly takes a massive dump on someone you care deeply for who has been struggling through an awful situation?
That was yesterday for us.
Romana is a twenty-one year old computer science student, coming up on two years into her degree. She escaped her abusive, toxic, controlling parents in November 2021 and has been living peacefully, renting on her own for a year now.
Yesterday afternoon, her parents showed up on her doorstep with social workers and a court order for guardianship. They ordered her into their car, and acted like the fact that they hadn't called the cops yet was them being nice. They guilt-tripped her about how much they missed her for the entire ride back to their house, and then the next morning had to be talked down from taking her phone and computer away twice.
That's what guardianship means, y'all, that she's not permitted to make property decisions. She is not permitted to live where she chooses. She is not permitted to talk to who she wishes. If she attempts to make her own decisions, she risks being held in contempt of court.
They did not serve her the required notice, nor did they serve her lawyer notice. Romana and her lawyer were not contacted by mail; were not contacted by email; and were not contacted over the phone, despite all these methods of contact having been given to her parents and their lawyers.
There was no attendable court session, where evidence could presented or witnesses could take the stand. She has not been permitted her right to look a judge in the eye and say "See for yourself. Ask me what you wish. Do I seem like I'm my own person to you?"
This happened because the justice who signed the judgment did so without reading any of it. Justice Smith did not read the application, the responses from Romana's lawyer, the capacity assessment report, or even the text of the draft judgment that was signed. How in the inkstained void does that happen?
Romana is eloquent, intelligent, and a great friend. She's been stripped of nearly every right at a moment's notice due to the selfishness of her parents. Honestly, I don't really feel comfortable referring to them as her parents, as though she were some upstart teenager depending on them for everything.
In the province of Ontario, there are two adults who want to keep a de facto prisoner and discreetly got the state to rubber stamp it. That prisoner is my friend, someone I care about deeply.
Try to imagine how that feels. Please, put yourself in Romana's shoes, trapped in that absurdist nightmare. Please try to imagine a fraction of the frustration dawning on horror, the confusion dawning on fury.
Ontario has given Romana no help to pay legal fees. There's no program that will help cover it, no charity that will pitch in. I should know. I looked. I know that sounds like an insane state of affairs, but we spent weeks looking and found nothing. She's got only the resources of a college student, barely scraping by with the help of friends, her sister, and GoFundMe.
Romana is just a person. And like any person, she just wants to live a life of basic freedom and dignity.

WELL...
I fucking knew it...my gut told me today was going to end horribly.
The prosecutor wouldn't even take my DCFS (CPS) agent's card, the agent that said our case was set to close.
She didn't care that it was a legal substance.
She didn't care that it wasn't mine.
She didn't care that my son was discharged in less than 12 hours with nothing given but fluids.
She didn't care that I was moving things from one room to the next so I couldn't watch my son every goddamn second.
She just looked at me and said "My child wouldn't have even had the chance to eat an edible in my home."
Um...ok? What the fuck does that have to do with me, my kid, and my home?
So I have to go back there in a month with the public defender because I'm facing a criminal charge with time in prison...FOR MY SON EATING AN EDIBLE THAT WASN'T EVEN MINE!!!
That's right. My ex-wife is the one who left an edible out. I keep everything locked up. Everything. No good deed goes unpunished.
I want out of here...I'm pulling my hair because I NEED to get out of here once this shit clears. I want nothing to do with this place anymore.

(text: “Can I sue my beekeeper neighbor?
...Every day I see my neighbor’s bees flying around my garden stealing the pollen or nectar from my flowers. Then the bees go back to my neighbor and creates (sic)* honey. My neighbor then harvests the honey and sells it at Pepper Place Market for profit. I have never recieved so much a a jar of honey as compensation and everyday my neighbors bees trespass and steal my flowers. I was stung once when I was a child, so I know how dangerous bees can be.
The way i see it, this is equivalent to a persons dog coming into my yard to steal balls or tools then gives it back to his owner who then sells it for profit.
Do i have legal groundto sue? What type of things should I begin documenting in order to prepare for a legal battle? What would be a fair settlement amount if my neighbor doesnt want to take this to court?
Thanks for the help.”)
*There were too many places to insert “sic” into this. After a bit I gave up, life being too short.)
(ETA: This could indeed be a troll. Problem is... it’s way too easy to believe it’s not. Go looking for them, and you will find enough tales of genuinely horrible neighbors to curl your hair right backwards into your skull....)
ETA 2: There’s a YouTube video. :). https://youtu.be/3kfGIz3u0RA

I could tell you that we both feel that we’ve lost our home countries because transgender people are no longer welcome there. I could tell you our story, and you’d sympathize, maybe comment on how we had the privilege of leaving but that less-fortunate others did not, then scroll on by. Some people who read this will…

Things people would do in the Purge but that haven't been explored in the movies because the writers are too weak:
1. Have same-sex weddings before they were legal.
2. Marry objects, concepts or anime characters (a lot of rednecks marry their guns).
3. Steal stuff, a lot of stuff, literally just getting a truck and getting a new kitchen set.
4. Being naked outside.
5. Fully on kink gear (probably pretty naked as well).
6. Entering the U.S. no law, no immigration laws.
7. Just leaving detention centers.
8. Leaving jail.
9. Adopting children as a same-sex couple.
10. Have an abortion in states where it isn't legal.
11. Stealing expensive medicines.
12. Break dumb laws just because.
13. Buying, selling and using drugs, lots of drugs.
14. Fire.
15. Commit a lot of piracy, I'd be downloading so many games and movies.
Please include more ideas, I'd like to see what other people could come up with.

Daily Spell: September 5th
Spell for Luck in Legal Issues
You’ll Need:
A purple candle
Nine marigold flowers
A cloth drawstring bag
If you're facing some sort of legal matter, whether criminal or civil, it never hurts to use a bit of magic to tip the scales of justice in your favor. Do this spell the night before a legal decision.
Like the candle, and place the marigolds in a circle around it. Say “Justice and fairness come to me, in this matter of the courts. Fair and favorable decisions come to me, in this matter of the courts.”
Crush the miracle flowers in your hand and place them in the back, and pull the drawstrings tight. Sleep with the fact under your pillow and carry it in your pocket the next day until the decision is made.

Romana's parents have new lawyers
Y'all have seen me talk about Romana before — my dear friend who's fighting her absolutely terrible parents who are trying to force her into guardianship. At this point she's spent a year and a half living on her own, but they still are trying to take that right away from her. The legal fight continues and she still needs donations to pay her lawyers and other bills.
I've previously talked about the parents' lawyers tricking a judge into signing the guardianship order without reading it, and using it to "legally" kidnap her to their house, which was back on December 22nd of 2022. Her lawyers got a stay on the 23rd, but the parents kept her there until the stay came out in writing on the 29th. Since that time, the parents have hired new lawyers. We're not clear whether this is because the old ones got in trouble for the trickery, or whether the old ones realized the case was untenable, or something else entirely.
Unfortunately this means an uptick in case activity and more billable hours for Romana's lawyers, which means we have to raise more money to cover it. So if any of you can spare some cash, or at least signal boost, it would be really really appreciated. Romana is a sweetheart who just wants to put all this behind her. She's relentlessly supportive and caring to her friends and loved ones, even while she's dealing with all this madness. Romana deserves better than this. Can you help her fight for it?

Artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to the extinction of humanity, experts - including the heads of OpenAI and Google Deepmind - have warned. Dozens have supported a statement published on the webpage of the Centre for AI Safety. "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war" it reads. But others in the field have said the fears about AI are overblown.
