JINGLIU
Street Racer Jingliu! Who is an urban legend in the street racing community, notorious for not caring about the safety of others, and doing whatever it takes to cross that finish line. She had taken a hiatus from racing a couple years back, but now she was back and ready to instill fear in the new generation of racers…
Street Racer Jingliu! Who is intimidating when she pulls up to the starting line. Many of the racers gawking at her in shock, as the infamous legend herself gets out of the car to scan the crowd. When she spots you in the midst of the watchers, her lips curve to a smirk, and she walks over to you to tilt your chin up at her. “Looks like I came to race on a good day…” she whispers, voice husky from years of retirement. “I hope to see you at the finish line.”
Street Racer Jingliu! Who proves to be a brutal competitor in terms of actually racing, as she’s fast, agile, but worst of all, dangerous. She knew what she was doing, potentially risking her life and others on the road, but she didn’t care. Her eyes are a burning, crazy orange that leaves you thinking of her while you watch, and you can’t help but silently root for her as she narrowly evades tumbling off a bridge and soaring down into a ditch.
Street Racer Jingliu! Who gets called crazy, insane, and absolutely psychotic. But you can’t help but fall in love with that as she screeches past the flags and stops inches away from where you were standing. Any longer and she would’ve run you over, but she wouldn’t let that happen, after all, you were too pretty to be killed <;3
Street Racer Jingliu! Who walks up to you and slides her sunglasses off, staring at you with those beautiful, burning eyes of hers. “You’re the only one who seemed to be rooting for me,” she hums, gravelly voice sending shivers down your spine, “What a…surprisingly loyal fan you are.”
Street Racer Jingliu! Who couldn’t care less about the way the crowd boos at her for almost injuring the other racers. Her eyes  are solely focused on you, as she wraps a gloved arm around your waist. “I think I’m ready for another round, care to race with me?” She asks with a grin, pulling you into her car and revving the engine up until it sounded like a roar.
Street Racer Jingliu! Who has you in her lap as she speeds through the highway with your pretty legs draping over hers. Thick, rimmed, strap on plunging into your walls, as she tries to give you the ride of your life (literally). All the while driving at dangerously high speeds.
Street Racer Jingliu! Who has your heart hammering and your adrenaline pumping, fucking you with her cock as she multitasks driving and pushing you towards an orgasm before she reaches the finish line. She’s racing two races at the moment, and she intends on winning them both, eager to claim her prize of a second victory, and your cum staining the leather of her pants.
Street Racer Jingliu! Who soars past the finish line just as you cream all over the strap, one hand gripping your ass before she murmurs “Looks like I won again” into your ear and delivers a tiny spank. She groans at the way you rest so perfectly in her lap, and she can’t wait to take you home with her for the rest of the evening.
Tumblr media
YUKONG
Street Racer Yukong! Who is a retired street racer that is greatly admired within the community. She is pretty much everyone’s role model, so when she pulls up to the starting gate in that memorable, yet legendary vehicle, everyone goes apeshit. Completely in awe at the sight of the legend before them, as many start to grab snacks to watch the race of a lifetime…
Street Racer Yukong! Who is a little rusty when it comes to racing against youngsters, but once she gets back into the rhythm of it, it’s like second nature. She’s so unknowingly charismatic that all the fangirls in the crowd seem to love her, yet there’s only one she has her eyes on, and that’s you. The cutest, sweetest girl she’s ever had the pleasure of meeting, as you were the one she used to screw in the backseat of her car back when she was a rookie.
Street Racer Yukong! Who’s maturity while racing is a dreamboat for many of her fans. They all admire how calm and composed she could be, as she narrowly avoids a crash on one of the busiest highways. Everyone is anxious for the safety of their beloved Yukong, but you know better. Instead, trusting that she knows what she’s doing, as you’ve ridden with her (and on her) countless of times.
Street Racer Yukong! Who sees you cheering her on in the stands and smiles softly at the sight. No matter how old you both get, you will always be her number one fan. Evident with how you always wore her old racing jacket, as it was the one she gave to you after a rather passionate night spent in the backseat of her car. (It always smelled like her whenever you wore it, so you’ve always kept it on you whenever the time was appropriate)
Street Racer Yukong! Who decides to greet you at the stands for old times sake, pulling you in for a winning kiss, and nearly lifting you off the ground with how happy she was to see you. “I missed you…” she says in that gruff, husky, voice of hers. “I want to celebrate with you for just a little while longer…”
Street Racer Yukong! Who is impossible to say no to as she drives you down to the hotel she was staying at with eagerness to see you naked again. It’s been…so long since she’s seen you naked beneath her, and she hopes to see more of you after this exchange as she is now back into street racing.
Street Racer Yukong! Who has you bent over her hotel bed with a strap on pounding into your insides. Where she stashed it, you had no idea, but you found yourself moaning in ecstasy, as the familiar pace of Yukong’s hips slamming mercilessly had you all nostalgic. Tears building up in your eyes, as you missed the feeling of her cock ramming so deep in you…
Street Racer Yukong! Who grunts like an animal in heat before lifting your legs up off the bed and slamming back into you brutally. “Goodness…you feel amazing…” she groans, already missing the feeling of being by your side for all those years. “I can’t leave you alone again… you’re mine. Mine.”
Street Racer Yukong! Who doesn’t leave in the morning this time, and instead stays curled up by your side by the time you wake up. Gruff, messy, bed head tickling your neck from behind, as she whispers “Looks like I’m staying with you, dear,” into your ear before kissing it affectionately.
Tumblr media
TINGYUN
Street Racer Tingyun! Who is a rookie in the street racing community that looks up to her idol: Yukong. She’s a little inexperienced, somewhat cocky, but that doesn’t stop her from winning a few races before going up to the big leagues. She looks very out of place when lined up besides the other famous racers, but you can’t help but notice her as she just looked so cute standing there! So innocent and so…unprepared.
Street Racer Tingyun! Who almost crashes several times when the race begins. It’s a miracle how she managed to not get into any accidents, as Tingyun was definitely not prepared to handle the brutality of the other racers. You felt bad when you saw the panicked look on her face, but her panic eventually paid off, as through some miracle, she won.
Street Racer Tingyun! Who is stunned silent when she’s the one who makes it across the finish line. Her eyes wide with shock as the crowd cheers for the rookie who managed to outspeed the pro racers. It takes her a moment to recollect herself, blinking in disbelief before Tingyun leaps into the air with excitement. “I did it! I actually won!” She exclaims, suddenly getting her cockiness back. “That’s a legendary race for sure!”
Street Racer Tingyun! Who’s ego gets stroked even more when you walk up behind her with a bouquet of flowers in your hand. She’s stunned speechless at the sight of a cute girl delivering her flowers, so she gets half the mind to flirt with you a little (even though you knew she was bluffing) “Oh? Are these for me?” She giggles smugly, taking the bouquet from you with gratitude. “So cute, say…how do you feel about you and I getting out of here, hmm? I’m sure I can show a pretty girl like you a good time.”
Street Racer Tingyun! Who doesn’t catch the way you roll your eyes at her request, as you did not like how smug she got after winning just one race in the big leagues. You figured you’d have to humble her one way or another, so you smirked and agreed to her proposal. “Great!” Tingyun grins, holding you by the waist and leading you back to her car. “I definitely know how to show a girl a good time…”
Street Racer Tingyun! Who did not expect to have her legs spread over your shoulders, tongue lapping vigorously against that drooling of cunt hers, while pressed against the hood of her car in a parking lot. She was expecting her to please you, not the other way around! Yet here she was, a moaning, crying, mess, trying to hold in her sobs as she gripped your hair with her fingers.
Street Racer Tingyun! Who is panting so heavily while her clit gets pushed against by your nose. Feather light kisses causing her to scream, before wrapping her legs even tighter around your face. “Oh…g-god…!” She whimpers and tries to keep herself calm but to no use. “This wasn’t how it was supposed to go!”
Street Racer Tingyun! Who you can’t help but giggle at as you thrust your tongue into her walls to taste all that she could offer. She was so embarrassed at the way the tables turned, but you didn’t care, as you wanted more of her cum dripping down your chin and staining the leather of her pants.
Street Racer Tingyun! Who lets out a squeal as she squirts all over your face in ecstasy. She’s trembling and shivering from the way you blow on her clit, and pretty soon she’s begging for more. “Oh…please come home with me later. You’re really good at this…”
Tumblr media
HIMEKO
Street Racer Himeko! Who is like a teacher to many of the younger street racers of this current generation. Known as one of the biggest rivals to Street Racer Kafka, Himeko is another legend amongst the community, due to her infamous races and ability to adapt to any situation quickly.
Street Racer Himeko! Who looks so effortlessly beautiful as she sits on the hood of her expensive, yet luxurious looking car. Everyone is taking photos and yelling for her attention, but she merely takes a sip of her coffee and ignores them while waiting for you. You’re the only girl in the world she would ever pay attention to, so you get treated like a VIP as you walk up beside her and join her by her car.
Street Racer Himeko! Who draped her large coat over your figure and opened the door for you like a gentlewoman. “Let’s go on a ride,” she says with a smile, treating the race like a leisurely drive as she was not at all nervous for the ride of a lifetime. “I promise to hold back a little for you, darling.”
Street Racer Himeko! Who keeps one hand protectively on your thigh while speeding at dangerous speeds down the road. She chuckles when you complain she’s going too fast, so she eases up on the speed now that she was so ahead. “Too fast for you, love?” She hums while squeezing your thigh. “I can always slow it down, we’re way ahead anyways.”
Street Racer Himeko! Who looks so ethereal as she rolls down the windows and lets the wind blow through her hair. She looked so…relaxed as she held you by her side, one hand on the wheel before completing the race on one smooth glide.
Street Racer Himeko! Who couldn’t care less about the praise she received from the crowd outside, as she only wanted to bring you home and claim her reward for winning yet another race. “Let’s go home, love. I’m exhausted and I want nothing more than to have you crying my name…” she whispers, pulling you away from the crowd and flash photography.
Street Racer Himeko! Who sees the needy look in your eyes and groans “fuck it” under her breath before pulling you back into her car to finger you. She uses her coat as a makeshift bed for you, and eagerly plunges her long, smooth fingers into your dripping cunt.
Street Racer Himeko! Who smothers your neck in kisses as the smell of new cars and perfume fills your nose with comfort. Himeko was always gentle and loving with you, despite doing something like illegal street racing on the side. She plants a crimson kiss on the side of your cheek, and thrusts two more her fingers into your walls. “It’s alright if you get my seats dirty,” she chuckles into your ear, “I wouldn’t mind any stains if it’s you.”
Street Racer Himeko! Who succeeds in her wants as she has your cum sliding down her arm and dripping all over her seats. She lets out a delighted hum and licks each digit clean, helping you slide up your panties. “Get your shorts back on, doll, I have reservations at a hotel across town. I’m not done with you just yet…”
Tumblr media
NATASHA
Street Racer Natasha! Who is a retired street racer that now works as a medic for injuries, crashes, and anything dangerous that happens on the road. She used to be a racer that taught Seele how to race, but due to growing older and having other responsibilities to take, Natasha retired and led a life of healing and recovery.
Street Racer Natasha! Who may be old, but definitely still has some of that racer energy left inside her. She’s quick and efficient when dealing with injuries, and the first time you saw her, she was pulling you out of a crashed car and checking your face for any cuts. “Easy there, don’t worry…” she hums in a comforting tone, “You’re just a little shaken up, I’ve got you…”
Street Racer Natasha! Who suddenly hoists you up in her arms and carries you bridal style to her car to take you to the infirmary. You had no idea that the medic was so strong and jacked, but you figured she had to carry people out on a daily basis, so perhaps this was just another day for her.
Street Racer Natasha! Who speaks so gently and softly to you before pressing a sweet kiss to your forehead. “Let’s get that pretty face all patched up, hm?” She chuckles softly, placing you in the back of her car with ease. “Don’t worry, I’m a doctor with quite the skilled fingers.” she says with a smile, completely unaware of the dirty implications she just implied…
Street Racer Natasha! Who’s fingers are so soft and tender as they rub some gauze against your forehead to clean the bloodied cuts. Her face is extra close to yours for maximum efficiency, yet you can’t help but think she’s staring at your lips despite cleaning the wound on your head. “Are you staring at my lips?” You ask in a hushed voice, Natasha casting you a smile before patting your head. “I am. They’re very beautiful.”
Street Racer Natasha! Who decided to screw it and place a tender kiss against your lips, caging you in on the patient’s bed. “My sweet patient deserves a reward for letting me bandage her so smoothly,” she hums, eyes growing dark with lust. “Let me spoil you, my dear…”
Street Racer Natasha! Who lets you cling onto her as she fingers your tight, needy hole with some lube. Her thumb presses your clit like a button, and you find yourself resting your head on her shoulder and whimpering against her neck. “Just like that…” she whispers, groaning a little when she feels you clench, “So tight…nngh…you like how I finger you, hmm? Naughty girl…”
Street Racer Natasha! Who slaps your clit with her palm and smirks at the way you suck her in the more she talks dirty. “Oh? It seems you get wetter the more I talk,” she chuckles, leaning in close to your ear. “What a good little racer you are…”
Street Racer Natasha! Who thinks your injuries are too serious to send you home just yet, even though they were just minor cuts and scrapes. She makes the decision to keep you resting in her infirmary for at least another night, resting in her bed while she stuffs her fingers up your cunt all night long. She has to make sure you’re well rested and healed for next week’s race after all...

Robert Doisneau / The Vogue Years
Foreword by Edmonde Charles-Roux
Flammarion, Paris 2017, 356 pages, 24,5x31,5cm, ISBN 978-2-08-020317-5
euro 25,00
email if you want to buy [email protected]
From high-society balls and fashion shoots to portraits of artists and scenes from urban life in France, this handsome volume—which features an open spine binding so that it lays flat to show off the photographs to their best advantage—showcases Doisneau’s best photographs for Vogue Paris. Celebrated photographer Robert Doisneau worked for Vogue from 1949 until 1965, illustrating a postwar France filled with a renewed zest for life. His little-known images of haute couture featured models like Brigitte Bardot and Bettina, who he photographed in the studio and out on the streets. He chronicled the members of the café society in their stately homes and at glamorous costume galas, dancing the night away. Best known for his humanist approach, he masterfully captured scenes from everyday life—from the grace of a wedding procession over a footbridge to the petulance of a child impatient for cake. Doisneau’s photographs captured the spirit of the era and featured celebrities like Karen Blixen, Picasso, Colette, and Jean Cocteau, as well as jazz musicians, movie stars, and humble craftsmen at work. Legendary Vogue editor in chief Edmonde Charles-Roux’s personal homage to the photographer—who was her friend and colleague—offers intimate insight into the man behind the camera, as complex and beautiful as the people and places he immortalized.

starting that sulla oneshot i'd been thinking about writing for a while.... the one that'll eventually become sulla/walter... turned sulla into a farm boy that became a pilot BECAUSE WHY NOT
anyway wip under the cut hehe
Despite being a Rubiconian born and raised, this was the first time Sulla had ever stepped foot within the vaunted halls of the Xylem.
It had a legendary history, one that had likely been embellished after a thousand retellings over the course of nearly two centuries. While its glitzy high-rises and cutting edge laboratories would make most think otherwise, the Xylem had once been a dingy, beaten up old colony ship that had landed on Rubicon-3 by mistake, its trajectory altered by a defective navigational AI while the human colonists and crew were placed into stasis for the decades long journey. No one had complained, though, as their original destination had been a planet deemed barely habitable, whereas Rubicon had been a lush paradise from the moment the colonists had stepped off their junker of a spaceship.
That was all ancient history, though, and the Xylem Sulla visited definitely wasn’t the original colony ship. That had been built on a starvation budget, with inferior materials that shouldn’t have survived the journey, according to science and had basically fallen apart the moment it had (crash)landed. This Xylem had been rebuilt from the ground up, modelled after the original but improved and scaled up by a hundred, with its internal stasis warehouses replaced with laboratories, hydroponic farms and other amenities that the intellectual elite enjoyed in the technocracy that ruled Rubicon.
After all, while Earth still toiled under its outdated and cannibalistic corporate oligarchy, Rubicon enjoyed an enlightened and liberal society where scientific and technical achievements were exalted, and the greedy chase for profits scorned.
(Or, so they said officially. Sulla knew that in reality they weren’t much different from the UEG and its corporate vassals - they just hid it under a bright and pleasant veneer.)
It was certainly different to Sulla’s hometown of Ebla, which was less of a town and more of a very ambitious village, surrounded by great fields of rye and barley, and vast, rolling plains of grazing grass. The ‘breadbasket of Belius’, Ebla was known as, and Sulla could’ve continued the family business along with his two brothers, but he had wanted more for himself, had looked up at the vast blue skies and wanted to soar, so had joined the Pilot Corps for the Rubiconian Militia. He’d returned to Ebla a few times since then, but not as much as he should’ve.
Either way, it was the polar opposite to Xylem’s urban skyline. The only patch of nature to be seen were aggressively organised parks or pavement trees, and there weren’t many birds either, anything that could serve as a perch adorned with cruel metal spikes. It made the whole thing seem rather unsettling to him, but Sulla supposed that the scientific elite probably didn’t like being reminded overly much of nature. They were violating it on a daily basis after all.
Which circled back to the reason why he was here in the first place.

Excerpt from the PMT chapter of “The Making of Miami Vice
In late 1984 his agent, Kaye Porter, sent him the script for Miami Vice, then entitled Gold Coast. He loved the script but was rejected after his first audition. “I told my agent they were nuts. I said, “No one can do this but me.” Several weeks later he was called back to read with Johnson. The chemistry that flared between the two men is legendary. “We read and the magic was happening. It was like fire and air.” Through some curious combination of experience and timing, the roles seem perfectly tailored for just these two. Their camaraderie is part of what makes the show work on both an emotional and a visual level, and even now, and they move into position for another take on a scene from Sons and Lovers, the chemistry between them is unmistakable.
As Thomas has said, “We’re like two halves of a circle that came back to make a whole. We have an animal magnetism, a realistic quality that stems from the personal lives we’ve lived.” His coppery skin and smoldering green eyes distinguish his appearance. His looks once confused modeling agencies wanting to fit him into a particular racial category, but Philip refused to be categorized. “I’m American gumbo, part American black, part American Indian, part Irish and part German.” Tubbs and Crockett never mention race. They’re not avoiding it. It’s simply irrelevant. Michael Mann feels Thomas represents a new kind of black man on television. “He’s an extremely sophisticated, urbane black man who’s proud of and draws from black culture… without making it into his identity.”
When he talks about Tubbs, Thomas sees reflections of himself: “Tubbs is many things. He’s a gypsy, a serious dealer. There’s a secret, secret part of him I’m not interested in revealing to anyone yet. I want you to always expect the unexpected,” he remarked in a Genesis magazine interview. And part of the unexpected are the quirks that Thomas himself instills in the character. The Jamaican accent, for example, or the depth of emotion that comes across during Crockett’s soul wrenching confession in Evan. Or the the sensuality Thomas portrayed in the love scene with Phanie Napoli, who played Angelina in Calderone’s Demise.

It’s the very reason the group was launched in February 2021: while original P-pop music saw success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, support faced a steep decline once groups started modeling themselves after their Korean counterparts. The industry lacked diversity and by extension, a distinct identity: something Alamat has in spades. Today, they are ready to live up to their name (which means “legends” in English) as the first multiethnic, multilingual act in the Philippines.
Alamat came together from all over the country. Leader, main dancer, and sub-vocalist Taneo (22 years old) is from Tabuk, Kalinga, in the far North; co-leader Mo (20) is a half-Black American from Castillejos, Zambales; Jao (20) comes from Pampanga and the group’s center Tomás (24) from Tabaco City, Albay. Vocalist and visual R-Ji (23) is a Waray-Waray from Borongan, Eastern Samar, while rapper-producer Alas (21) is a Bisaya from Davao City.
All were students with side jobs prior to joining the group, and while they all agree that this gig positively changed the trajectory of their lives, the journey was not without doubts. “Lately, it seems like Filipinos gravitate towards foreign influences more: our appreciation for our culture has slowly started to fade. So when we heard of the concept of this boy group, we couldn’t help but think it was risky,” Jao admits.
Alamat’s creative director Jason Paul Laxamana further outlines to Teen Vogue via email the complexities in P-pop and K-pop, and how they’ve affected Alamat’s reception in the country. “For Pinoy K-pop fans, they would judge Alamat based on their standards: glossy sets, Korean-style choreography, and even physical appearance like light skin and colored eyes,” Laxamana says. “Since Alamat doesn’t follow their formula 100%, many perceive them to be doing it wrong.”
But these risks seem to have paid off, as they’ve built an impressive portfolio of songs that illuminate the Philippines’ illustrious culture. “Kbye,” for instance, is their debut anthem about ghosting sung in seven of our local languages. “Kasmala” — which recently went viral for its “f*ck colonizers” concept — references the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, where Filipino natives were displayed like zoo animals before a foreign audience. Their latest EP Pasulong has the sensual and bass-heavy “Aswang” as the lead single, where all six members fall for the country’s most popular urban legend: a bloodsucker that only appears at night.

The Garden of Weston House
The life of any photographer can take them strange places, but even moreso the life of one who works the occasional contract for a paranormal activity magazine. She had taken some fairly eerie assignments in her time, but this one to photograph the exterior (and, unofficially for a considerable bonus, interior) of the Weston House had particularly bad vibes that might’ve even discouraged her from taking the gig were she not a truly consummate professional who enjoyed her work more the stranger it got. There had never before been a time when she’d been sent into the ass-end of a rural nowhere in search of an urban legend, haunt, or ghost where the near majority of the people she asked about the location a) had heard of it, of course, it’s been out in those woods since my pappy’s time, b) sure, could say the way to get there or at least thereabouts, AND c) really don’t think it’s a good idea to go traipsin’ up there, lil’ miss. Everywhere she went people discussed the house with a tangible but mundane fear, as if she’d been asking for directions to the closest patch of quicksand. It was a strange attitude to have towards a mansion supposedly still inhabited by some of the most ornery ghosts of the US’ deep south, lacking in reverence if not respect.
For her part, the intrepid photographer proceeded along her journey more in dread of the locals than of any ghosts. While she knew her light skin and blond curls would ward away any of the absolute worst attitudes towards race the inhabitants of the south could infamously sometimes hold (with the right dress and makeup she could pull off a striking imitation of a model stereotypical 50s housewife), she’d reached her early 30s having learned most people picked up on her having mixed parentage one way or another pretty quickly. She was definitely…something, it just wasn’t clear exactly what, they’d think. And from traveling the States she was well aware that being perceived to be the wrong “something”, even by mistake, in the wrong neighborhood could mean serious trouble.
So she did not linger long even among the perfectly pleasant communities she stopped in along the way, and soon she had driven her only slightly beat-up and very dirty robin’s egg blue volkswagen to the end of a long dirt road in the woods that came to a run-down plantation house sitting in the middle of about a quarter-acre of brilliantly-colored flowers in full bloom.
It was an absolutely breathtaking sight, which might’ve stunned anyone into a pause of admiration and wonder, but as was noted, this photographer was a true professional. The first order of business was to turn around and park the car facing back down the road, just in case a quick departure was necessitated by anything both ornery AND corporeal inhabiting the supposedly abandoned house, such as a bear or axe-wielding vagrant. The next was to step out, in her flattering white top and jean shorts attractive to the attentions of otherwise tight-lipped locals but not so attractive as to be uncomfortable, and set up the tripod. She moved about, taking numerous pictures at different angles, slowly and deliberately, working to recapture that sense of astonishment when she’d first come on the strange and beautiful sight for the first time by trying to maintain the emotions for as long as possible.
By the end of this process, her nose had only started to itch pretty badly and run here and there. She’d taken her allergy medication that morning, but she didn’t have prescription-strength stuff and Ol’ Madame Weston’s legendary garden was an industrial-strength threat to her allergies. She pulled a fresh red and white polka-dot handkerchief from the car and stuffed it into her back pocket, grabbed her portable camera, steadied her breathing, and approached the property.
Walking on the overgrown dirt path through the garden felt like moving through a wonderland, despite the allergies. Snapdragons of what seemed like every color grew to her waist, while sunflowers towered over her. A rainbow of azaleas, chrysanthemums, daffodils, daisies, and plenty more grew wild all around the grassy ground, sharing the space without any apparent competition for light or water. Butterflies and bees lazily flew this way and that. She smiled with satisfaction as she snapped photo after photo; this part of the house’s legend would earn her commission by itself no matter how little of the rest of it turned out to be true. Plus, it was an incredible sight to see, even if walking through it did turn the back of her throat scratchy and set her eyes lightly stinging and start her little round nose’s broad nostrils flaring…
“Hhha’tshuuh!”
She did not have what anyone would call a feminine sneeze, and she squeezed her nose into her hands to prevent any more out of reflexive habit than of a genuine concern anyone might hear her. But there was in fact a startled rustling somewhere amidst the flowers, which made her jump and sent a small strand of snot flying off her face. Of course, she realized almost immediately it was probably just some rodent or other small animal, just as startled as she was and sent bounding away by the sudden noise.
After digging her handkerchief out of her pocket to blow and wipe her nose, she blinked away an itchy feeling growing in her eyes and continued her tour of the yard a little more hurriedly, approaching the front door in an eager prospect of getting inside and at least briefly away from the pollen-heavy air (though she wasn’t sure the inside would be much better, if it was as dusty as an abandoned haunted house should warrant).
The door was of course locked, but there was of course a spare key hidden nearby; a thorough search of the front porch revealed it cleverly tucked between the arm and seat of the old porch swing, the rusting chains of which had been forlornly creaking in the breeze through her entire visit so far. She gave a cursory knock and called out a forceful (if somewhat stuffy) “hello” before entering, just for the sake of some plausible deniability if she came across an ill-tempered host, and went inside.
Inside, the house was actually very unremarkable. The furnishings had largely been sold off by whatever former inhabitants were still sane, or stolen by other daring trespassers like herself, or turned into smoke, or whatever happens to the furniture of haunted houses in the rural countryside. There was enough dead plant debris scattered about to make her suspect a window must be open in the house somewhere, although she hadn’t seen one on the ground floor and didn’t feel any draft except from the front door that she’d left open (just in case). It was also certainly dusty, and there was an odor which the photographer couldn’t immediately place but was distinctly unpleasant and lit a tingly fire at the tip of her nose, and made her throat slightly constrict in protest.
As the sound of scurrying somewhere just out of view reached her ears, she realized what the smell was: cat. The house had probably become a home for at least one feral stray, which she would have to be careful of both for the sake of her dander allergies and to avoid needing the first aid kit in her car. She kept her ears alert as she moved throughout the house, treading carefully in an effort to avoid startling any more lurking animals.
However, the aggravating air of the house made it impossible for her to move with anything that could be considered stealth. Her nose had started constantly dripping, being equally overburdened in the musky, dusty air of the house’s interior as it was in the pollen-saturated exterior. She paused to sniff or wipe her nose after taking a picture more often than not,  frequently with a soft throat-clearing to try and quell the tickle that was growing in her throat. She was constantly blinking and breathing like a sneeze (or five) might be building, but she would quell the feeling by aggressively plowing a knuckle into the side of her nose and rubbing until the feeling became manageable. Despite being certain she wasn’t sharing the house with anyone else, she felt a distinct sensation of not only being watched but being leered at, and her cheeks flushed with misplaced embarrassment each time she snuffled or coughed particularly loudly or wetly, which was happening more and more frequently as she skulked through the house.
After finishing a cursory round of photographing all the empty and standard rooms of the ground floor, she blew her nose as quietly as she could manage, then a second time more quietly and less wetly, before moving with only a small amount of trepidation up the tall staircase to the second floor. Up here was the bedroom of Ol’ Madame Weston, where most of the sightings of hauntings had been reported. The air was stiflingly hot up here rather than merely unpleasantly warm, and she found herself starting to sweat from what she told herself was purely the heat, feeling silly that she was at all spooked by an old abandoned house in broad daylight. After briefing considering looking through the other rooms first, she decided there was little point in saving the main attraction for last and headed straight to the second door on the right after the landing where she knew the master bedroom to be. As she walked quickly to fling open the door with the enthusiasm of a child determined to prove to themselves they’re not afraid of anything in their closet, she vaguely noted that this door was the only one in the house fully closed.
Upon opening it, she was met with the sight of yet another room that appeared to be completely empty, until she blinked a single time and out of the corner of her vision (or maybe out of nowhere) there appeared one of the most luxurious-looking lounge chairs she’d ever seen, in which sat the hunched-over, hollow-eyed, partially see-through form of an absolutely menacing old woman in a long rumpled floral-patterned nightgown, with a wooly black cat sitting on her lap. The glare she gave the photographer was one that she was surprised to find she recognized; it was the look of someone who had immediately seen that she was…something, and something that was not welcome around here.
In that moment of recognition, an unnaturally foul wind blew into the room from the open window behind this contemptuous visage and blasted the photographer full in the face. It was molten-hot, choking, and polluted, as if it had picked up all the filth of that room and had hurled it at her along with all the malice of that seated figure. In an instant the photographer felt the back of her throat become coated with pollen, her eyes caked over with dust, her nose plugged with cat hairs, and her soul stained by spite. She reeled backwards out of the room in shock, fright, and repulsion. As she did so she snapped a single picture with the camera still mostly held in the direction of the room (she was, after all, a professional) before turning and slamming into the hallway wall, placing one hand on it to steady herself as she stumblingly ran to the stairs. With one hand following the wall and then the railing, and the other gripping her camera like it was the only thing keeping her alive, she had no way of reaching her handkerchief and half-sneezed, half-choked freely, spraying her front as her nose flooded down her face and her burning eyes overflowed with tears.
“Ah-Huchh! Huhht’shuuh Ha’kshh Huh’kshh Huuhh’KSHH! Hhahk’shh! Haah-Utchh-shhh!
Half-blinded and barely able to keep her balance, she somehow made it down the house stairs and back out the front door without falling. However, she overreached for the railing of the porch, grabbing air where she’d hoped there’d be a support and sending herself careening forward down the porch stairs with all the momentum of her mad dash out of the house. As she tripped somewhere on the last few, she kept that one hand out in front of her while the other held out her camera tightly, ready to take the impact of the fall on her elbow and forearm if that’s what was needed to protect it. With one hand to brace her fall she was only barely scuffed from it, but she landed face-first into the massive flowerbed, and as the wind was knocked out of her she breathed in a massive whiff of their perfume followed by the irritating, vaguely phlegmy smell that accompanies a major allergic reaction.
Not wanting to slow her escape, the photographer crawled forward straight into the flowers as she scrambled to her feet, and continued her run through the garden in the vague direction of her car, sneezing thickly the whole way. “Ehh-Huchh! Huchh'shuh! Heeug’shuh!” Only when she no longer felt plantlife clinging to her calves did she slow to brush tears and snot from her face enough to see more clearly, knowing then that she was at the property line border. “Ahh-Huchh! Huhh’tschuuh!” Breathing heavily, she sprinted to her car and practically dove inside as she flung the door open. “Heeuh’tschuuh!” Then followed the natural priorities: lock the door, stow the camera safely in the glove compartment, start the engine, and finally splash the contents of her water bottle into her face.
After pulling out her messy handkerchief to hurriedly clear (or at least smear) her face free enough of tears to see, she stepped on the gas and began driving away from the house as fast as she dared. Even if she’d felt temptation to look back, her rapid tearful blinking and gasping as she strained to fight back her sneezing long enough to drive away would’ve prevented her from doing so. Only once she had struggled around a bend in the road did she dare pull over again and let her sneezing fit continue fully uninterrupted, hoping to get it all out of her system. Her handkerchief was already soaked to the point of uselessness, and in desperation as snot and tears poured down her chin she pulled her top up to her face to blow and wipe into, not realizing just how much pollen and dust was still clinging to it.
“Heeaug’shuhh! Ah-huchh! Huchh'tshuuh! Huchh'shuh Huh-huhhhHH’KSHH! Ehuhh…Huhh-etsch Ah’tschh-Ah’tschh-Ah’tschh-Ah’tschh Ahh’tschh Atshuuh! Hahhh…HAH’KSHH! Huh…uhh…Heeuh’tschuuh Heeuh’tshh Eeuhh-huchh Huhh’kshh Hahh-EH’Kshh Huhh’Kshuh! Eheh-heh…hehhhhh’tshuh! Ahh’Huchhshuh! Heeauh’TSHUUH!”
It went on like that, dying down at times but never truly stopping. The feeling of cat hairs tickling the tip of her nose simply refused to quite go away, as did the feeling of dust and pollen coating the inside of her throat and back of her sinuses, and all three pricking the undersides of her eyes. She rubbed viciously at the sides of her nose and beneath her eyes to try and drive out the itching without any noticeable impact whatsoever, and no matter how much she blew her nose into her top (or eventually her hands, wiping them on her shorts) it just clogged up full to bursting again in seconds.
Ultimately, she decided she wasn’t willing to wait here any longer. Even though she was already starting to misremember what she had seen in the Weston House (it was a trick of light, or a heat-induced hallucination, or some kind of side effect from her overstrained allergy medication, or some other rational explanation) the back of her mind was still screaming at her to get away from that place and not look back. She wouldn’t risk any further delay; the camera would have the final say about what she did or did not see in that room, and until she checked the film it was better safe than sorry. Still struggling to fight back her sneezes enough to keep her eyes at least half on the road, pollen clinging to her hair, clothes damp and sticky with snot and panic sweat, eyes bloodshot, and nose ruby-red and starting to chap, the photographer drove miserably away from the haunted Weston house and its luscious garden.

Movie Review | Wheels on Meals (Hung, 1984)
Tumblr media
I’m not the first one to make this point, nor will I do so the most elegantly, but I think it’s fair to say that a lot of classic Hong Kong cinema is coloured by a certain claustrophobia that comes out of Hong Kong itself. You can look at a movie like Police Story, which is in many ways a tonally light entertainment, yet gets an undeniable charge out of its setting, especially in its raw, intense climax. But when you take these movies out of that setting, and all of its urban flavour and political and historical baggage, the energy definitely changes. You can look at Armour of God, which was shot throughout Europe and has a certain slackness when compared to the other movies in Jackie Chan’s ridiculous directorial hot streak at the time. (Obviously, the near fatal injuries he suffered during the production played a part in that too.) You can definitely see that quality in Wheels on Meals, which has a pleasing leisurely quality that comes out of its Barcelona setting.
I understand that Sammo Hung had run into difficulties shooting earlier movies in Hong Kong, and found the Spanish officials in contrast to be much more accommodating, and that sense of freedom definitely colours the movie. This is in terms of the proceedings themselves, with several elaborate action sequences shot on location). But it’s also in terms of the overall atmosphere, with the action and comedy sequences having a sense of spontaneity that mixes appealingly with their laser-precise execution. The movie has a certain travelogue quality that results anytime you make a movie in a picturesque setting, but on a deeper level has a feeling of true escapism. Wouldn’t it be neat if you too went on a vacation to Spain and got caught up in an adventure like our heroes? The flimsiness of the plot becomes an asset, as it plays into that “choose your own adventure” quality, and Sammo’s character sums up the stakes most succinctly when explaining why some men tried to kidnap the female lead.
“They’re bad guys.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I’m a good guy.”
And in that sense, Hung’s knack for maximum visual impact explains the wardrobe. Every single outfit in this movie worn by someone other than an extra manages to clash, not only with the setting (the bright pastel colours pop against the earthen hues of the Spanish architecture), but also with each other (there’s a motorcycle gang who clearly do not shop at the same place). The movie is rarely not pleasing to look at, even if the outfits worn by the characters would be retina-searing in other circumstances. You’ll be taking a lot of great photos on this vacation.
That sense of visual impact and use of colour also plays beautifully into the action scenes. Listen, I’m not a technical expert, and I can’t explain fully why Hung’s precision in his editing and camera moves makes for great action, but I can tell you that when a hideous yellow van starts careening through the streets of Barcelona and knocking away the villain’s automobiles like bumper cars, it’s hard to keep your eyes off the screen. (The van is shown earlier to be extremely high tech for a foodservice operation, a quality that not only comes in handy during the chase, but also accounts for what I assume was the entirety of the special effects budget with its fancy computer display.) Hung must have had a pretty sweet deal with Mitsubishi, as three of his movies managed to make their boxiest, most brightly coloured models integral parts of great action scenes.
Of course, when you put Jackie, Sammo and Yuen Biao (sorry, no first name basis for this fella, the other two get their first names as actors and last names as directors) in a movie together AND have one of the villains played by Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, you’re going to have more than your share of amazing physical feats. The legendary fight between Jackie and Benny the Jet is famous for a moment when the latter does a kick so fast it blows out a bunch of candles with the resulting gust of wind. But that scene is also exciting because of the way it starts to savour every gesture, every move that Jackie makes. (The introduction of slow motion in the tail end of the fight is an astute choice.) Jackie in his own movies has a certain self-deprecating presence (the aforementioned Police Story has him frequently embarrassed in all manner of ways, including girlfriend troubles, a court hearing gone sour and even dog doo on his shoe), but Hung tends to play him as kind of cool, and this fight seems genuinely in awe of him. It’s telling that the opening montage shows Jackie and Yuen Biao working out, capturing their physiques lovingly, as if to tell us that even though a lot of what follows will be fun and games, these guys are undeniably amazing physical performers. Sammo makes himself comparatively goofier through his performance, like his clumsy contributions to the climactic plan, swinging in through a window and kicking Jackie in the face in the process.
“I knew it was you.”
“You knew it was me and still kicked me in the face?”
“I knew it was you when I kicked you and you didn’t say anything.”
He also cheats by giving himself a ridiculous perm, but I guess the other guys get to be goofy as well, and all is fair in love and war.
And of course, as far as amazing physical feats go, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention their female co-star Lola Forner. Forner not only provides the impetus for the plot (a thief with a heart of gold who is also kinda, sorta a princess; don’t think about it too hard), and proves to be a capable comic performer who plays off the boys nicely, but also seems to perpetually have her hair caught in a slight breeze. Listen, blowing out candles with your kick is pretty awesome, but is it really more impressive than having your hair always fluttering in the wind, no matter where you are or what’s happening around you? The jury’s still out.

I tried Dislyte.  Lilith Games has a pretty sour reputation, but the aesthetic looked interesting so I gave it a shot.
If you’ve played Summoner’s War or Epic Seven, this game will be pretty familiar as it takes a lot of cues from those two.  The game is a turn-based grindfest RPG set in a weird urban-mythological crossbreed of a realm, which sounds way more interesting than the game has executed it.
The story is typical mobile fare, without any particular outstanding characters.  The designs are pretty top notch, and the illustrations are nice and clean, but the in-game models don’t really translate the charm of the illustrations as well and can look downright ugly on characters that don’t deserve it. Luckily the illustrations are used most of the time, so you’re spared Li Ling’s weird unhinged jaw...
... but not his terrible dub voice.  For the global version, the dub is in English and only English; you do not have an option to change the voices to another language or to turn them off.  The dub is so, so very painful and it’s exacerbated by the extremely cheesy dialogue that is probably meant to appeal to tweens.
Character ratio is pretty decent, although the women tend to lean more on the ‘not very monstrous’ side (so they can be pretty and sexy) compared to the variety with the guys. But most of the designs are pretty interesting and different from typical mobage fare, even if there isn’t much character personality to match. The writers also don’t lean in too much on the mythological figures these characters were ‘chosen’ by, so it just feels more like a design theme than anything relevant to the story or game.
The game’s music is EDM/Hip Hop style fare; you’ll like it or you don’t.  I enjoy EDM and found it somewhat generic but not offensive; we’re not talking TWEWY levels of catchy bops.  The game also has a rhythm mini-game, which offers a bit of a break from the grinding.
And most of your grinding is going to be dog-walking (raising low levels to high levels to feed to your higher levels) or gear drops.  The gear does have the dreaded RNG stats: the stat values are not RNG but the stats you get are, ie: if you roll crit damage, you’ll always get the same value of crit damage for that gear’s grade.  And of course, in games like this, speed, crit, and crit damage are the most desirable options, with speed being king.
On top of the RNG stats, upgrading has a chance for failure, something I thought was left behind in Korean f2p games from twenty years ago, but here we are in 2022.  Luckily, upgrading gear costs only the in-game gold and if you fail “x  amount of times” you’ll get a success the next time, so the gear upgrades serve as nothing more than a huge gold sink.  I’m not even sure why the failing exists since there’s a safety net and this doesn’t have a MMO economy so there’s no need for a gold sink...
Summoning currency is extremely stingy, even in the honeymoon phase.  I haven’t played a game this ungenerous in the early stages in a long, loooooooooooooong time.  It feels pretty out-of-touch in modern gacha mechanics.  Since you will not be rolling often to get your stable built early, pray you get lucky with that 1% Legendary rate.  Dupes give stat boosts to characters, so while not necessary-necessary, if you’re a min-maxer, it’s going to be an important element for any meta characters.  There’s a 120 roll pity which is a bit yikes considering the stinginess of the currency.  It rolls over and resets whenever you pull a Legendary.
Rerolling has been extremely discouraged by the publisher, and it takes a while to do so regardless.  On top of that, the initial 10-rolls are rigged against you: the “guaranteed Legendary” you get is of one of only pre-chosen two. They’re not bad and will serve you fine in the early-game, but if you like collecting cool characters, this game wants you to spend.
And like other Lilith Games, they definitely do remind you that you should spend, with deal pop-ups and a number of various pay-to-progress options in the store, as well as two different tiers of battle passes. Cash shop is pretty pricey though, with even roll currency priced above typical gacha mobage market.
Battles are pretty fun. I enjoyed Epic Seven’s battles even if I hated how much of a job the game was, and this is a simplified form of that but still retaining some element of strategy.  The game does have auto but no sweeps, similar to E7.  There is a stamina system which has limited amount of refills AND the stamina refills you get expire after a certain amount of time.  Bit of a yikes if you like playing games for stretches, won’t be a big deal if you’re just a ‘dailies and go’ sort.
The game has a beta server that’s about over half a year old; currently they are not merged with the new global one, but it has been stated that a merging will happen at a later point.  If you’re competitive in pvp, this is a huge negative; an 8 month head start means you’ll never catch up when the merger happens unless you spend outrageously.
As a whole though, if you just play casually, it’s inoffensive fare. I’d be wary of spending or being too invested in the endgame though, since Lilith has a poor reputation in monetization and game balance, but in terms of just something to play with a simple, but fun battle system, there’s definitely been worse.  I haven’t dropped it yet compared to some other games.
Just kinda makes me sad that they had a really interesting lore-setup here and just completely dropped the ball on it.
