hi saki hiii if it's not 2 much of a bother, do u have a link to a batman reading list w some of the older comics u often talk abt? despite The Disease I've only read maybe 4 actual Bruce Wayne centered runs
-Angel 🫶🏾
HI ANGEL !!! unfortunately i have not yet found a good reading list of older batman comics. most of them are just like "read every single thing published since 1940" and like, okay, fair enough, but also no one wants to do that.
fortunately this gave me an excuse to look through my own fav reads and compile a short list to get you started! the thing about older batman comics is that (personally) they are far more easier to follow compared to modern day comics, so once you get familiar with the older style and layouts, it's so easy to just find the kind of stories you want to read!
most of these are published after the 1970s but all of them are before the New 52 (2011) !!
for a more concise list (+content/trigger warnings) you can find this reading list on my comic geeks.
> Batman: Legends of The Dark Knight
now this collection features over 200 issues and a dozen writers BUT it's because it's full of 2-4 issue short stories. out of these, the ones i recommend most to begin with are; #16-20 (venom), #39-40 (mask), #100 (the choice).
if you like the tone of these, then i would recommend reading the other stories too. great thing is that they're not connected to each other at all, so if you don't like one then you can skip it no problem. i definitely jumped over a few writers and weird stories when reading.
> Batman 1940
now from the main run itself, the advice to just read everything published is not worth it. some of these stories really just drag or are super confusing.
some favourites of mine to start with are; #402-403 (One Batman Too Many), #423 (You Shoulda Seen Him...) and of course, #404-#408 (Batman Year One).
> Detective Comics
now i have always been of the opinion that tec is the better of the two main runs, and you can really see the quality of story telling shine in older comics !
a few of my favourite issues are: #408 (The House That Haunted Batman), #439 (The Night of the Stalker), #457 (There is No Hope in Crime Alley!), #573-574 (My Beginning... and my Probable End) and #598-#600 (Blind Justice).
> The Brave and The Bold
all runs of tbatb runs, whether that be the 1950, 1990, 2007 or even present 2023 run, are so good !!!
for an older story, #93 (published 1970) is my favourite !!
> Batman Black and White
okay so i know i have been giving singular issue recs up until now but i am so serious when i say you should just read every single issue of Batman Black and White. there are three runs, the 1996, 2014 and 2020 with only around 6 issues each. some of the best and truly life changing stories are within it.
in fact, my all time number one favourite batman comic EVER is published in #1 of the 1996 run (Perpetual Mourning). there will never be a batman story ever like it again.
> Other Stories
there was something in the air during the 1990s, because some of the best ever batman stories were published during that time. i fear there has truly never been such a stacked decade like that one.
a few essential must reads from 1980s-1990s; Batman The Cult, Batman: Night Cries, Batman: War on Crime, Batman: The Ultimate Evil, Batman: Son of the Demon.
happy reading!!!!

2023 Cookie of the Year: Kingdom Edition
☁️ Heya! I’m sure you got the note my colleague Kit sent you and pinned at the top of the blog. She’ll be working her way into being part of our main contributor panel over the next couple months just as I and Strawberry Crepe Cookie have, which is how we ended up becoming frequent contributors on this blog. How she got into this is a long story, and one for another time. But moving on to the main topic here, it’s time to vote for 2023’s Cookie of the Year! In case you missed it last year like Vanilla Meringue Cookie (Your ACTUAL Editor, who also goes by Meringue) did, here’s how it works:
Every playable Cookie (minus the collaboration Cookies including Sonic, Tails, and BTS) in CRK will be split into a tournament bracket full of 1v1 matchups
In each matchup, pick the one you like more. There WILL be matchups where your vote will force you to choose favorites OVER your favorites.
Finalists will receive special prizes of all kinds which we don’t know yet!
Everyone might receive different matchups.
All times listed below are in KST (GMT+9)
R1: Update launch - 12/17, 11:59 AM (top 64 of 110 will advance)
R2: 12/17, 1 PM - 12/20, 11:59 AM (top 32 of 64 will advance, this is where the bracket goes to the real 1v1 situations where one goes home in each matchup)
R3: 12/20, 1 PM - 12/23, 11:59 AM (top 16 of 32 will advance)
R4: 12/23, 1 PM - 12/25, 11:59 AM (the top 6 of 16 will advance to the semifinals, more than half of the quarterfinalists will be eliminated)
Semifinals: 12/25, 1 PM - 12/27, 11:59 AM (the top 3 of 6 will advance to the finals)
Finals: 12/27, 1 PM - 12/29, 11:59 AM
Results Announcement: 12/29, 1 PM
☁️ Anyways, let’s move on to the first round with some matchups that appeared on Meringue’s end. There WILL one-sided matches because of high rarity or reputation and splitting-hair rounds because you gotta choose between favorites. It’s possible you could have different matchups though, as more than half the competition is still moving on. Once you make your vote in a round, you can’t take it back. Vote in every matchup in a round for 200 Crystals.
Sorbet Shark vs Peppermint (Good luck choosing between them…)
Kouign-Amann vs Twizzly Gummy
Lilac vs Frilled Jellyfish

Legends of the Dark Knight (vol. 1) #67: Going Sane, part 3: Breaking the Surface
Read Date: April 21, 2023
Cover Date: January 1995
● Writer: J.M. DeMatteis ● Penciler: Joe Staton ● Inker: Steve Mitchell ● Colorist: (Digital Chameleon) ● Letterer: Willie Schubert ● Editor: Archie Goodwin ◦ Jim Spivey ●
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read:
● mm, pizza sounds good about now. with pineapple. (don't @ me)
● this Joker storyline is really quite tragic, with Joseph ("Joe Kerr"). you know it can't end well. I just hope Rebecca survives. it's like a train wreck happening in slow motion.
● this is the first story I've come across so far (that I can remember, anyway) that Batman was found as Batman and unmasked by his rescuer
● the art style is growing on me
● Bruce has a shattered femur and a compound fracture of a rib. damn.
● the doctor thinks he was in costume due to a party. they're in a town called Accord, 200 miles north of Gotham. the water carried him a damn long way…
● back to the present, Batman reveals to Jim that he's back, but he prevents him from getting too close. he doesn't want Jim to see how hurt he is.
● omg Batman is smiling. that's kind of terrifying
● heheh, the poor doctor made the mistake of sneaking up on Bruce. he nearly attacked her by reflex
● Bruce sees the small-town life and probably for the first time in his life feels a sense of peace. he doesn't know if he wants to go back to his old self.
● omg, Bruce is wearing flannel, working in a garden, and looks happy…
● back in the present, he's still trying to get up to where he was physically
● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis:
Joseph and Rebecca find themselves outside the dilapidated Comedia Theater with Joseph telling her how he loved the place as a kid. Rebecca doesn't understand, as she was told he just moved to the city less than a year ago. Joseph plays it off as a harmless josh. Batman begins again on his search for Joker nearby while various flashbacks of his missing time come to his mind. He recalls how Dr. Lynn Eagles, from the upstate little town of Accord, did emergency surgery on him for his various life-threatening injuries. She comes to call Bruce "Lazarus" during his time there.
Batman appears to Captain Gordon in his office and assures him that he will find Joker and bring him to justice, while hiding his apparent ache from his still recuperating body. Batman confronts Dorothy Bruckner, the widow of recently deceased Dr. Elias Bruckner. An alcoholic and failed plastic surgeon, Dr. Bruckner catered to criminals wanting new faces. Batman easily deduces from Dorothy's reaction that Joker hired him to do something about his skin condition and killed him when the job was done.
Flashbacks take Bruce back to his downtime in Accord. Bruce asks why Lynn would take him in like this, to which she replies that simple intuition says that he is a good man. The idyllic quiet life in Accord makes Bruce think of possibly giving up Batman, and finding peace within himself in such a town. Lynn tells Bruce that she once moved to Gotham City for a few months but eventually returned to Accord because she hated the big city scene. Bruce likewise tells her vague truths about his life in the city.
In the Batcave, Batman is still retraining his body to act as it once did, when it hits him. Councilwoman Elizabeth Kenner's comments that Joker made her watch old comedic films, spurs Batman to cross-check rentals of such films at local video stores. Seeing the name of Joseph Kerr makes Batman wonder why Joker would be so obvious in this deception.
In a flashback in Accord one night, Lynn confesses to Bruce that she did indeed love Gotham City, but one night she came upon an intruder in her apartment, held her at gunpoint, and proceeded to rape her. The tragedy led her back to Accord to heal. After a few years, she returned to the city to spend the day there. However, on the way back to her hotel, she was confronted by a man with a knife. She reveals that this time she was saved by Batman, and that was the reason why she helped Bruce the whole time, and returns his costume to him. Upon hearing this, Bruce returns to Gotham City.
Batman visits Joseph and Rebecca's apartment and sees a picture of them. Joseph's innocent look casts doubt in Batman that he is Joker. The superintendent, Mikey Sansonia, tells Batman that Joseph and Rebecca went on vacation in Pennsylvania weeks ago and that they are to be married. This solidifies for Batman that this is a just a deception by Joker to throw him off the trail. However, in another part of town, Joker reappears.

the boys as weapons i sell at work
this idea came to me on a dark shift, pls enjoy. also guess who passed tf out at work today and had the paramedics come lmao
genre: other
cw: swords??, android quality pics, measurements in inches and price amounts in usd
Lucia
❧ left: 47 inch king arthur sword with a crown shaped pommel, retailed at $325
❧ right: deluxe historical tizona of el cid, retailed at $175
❧ both swords have red accents on them, matching lucia's aesthetic
❧ both are also very regal and elaborate, suitable for a king
Levy
❧ left: blue robin hood sword with a deep etched blade, retailed at $325
❧ right: excalibur with a gold enamel and blue fillings, retailed at $350
❧ both swords have blue, which matches his aesthetic
❧ both swords also have historical value, and i think levy would be very interested or even inspired by the legends of robin hood and the sword in the stone
Mefy
❧ left: 46 inch gold barbarian sword with a deep green gem on the pommel and depictions of goat heads and a winged scaly creature, retailed at $315
❧ right: celtic sword with a circular pommel and depictions of what appears to be a serpent, retailed at $175
❧ the one on the left has a green gem which obviously reminded me of him, and the rest of the design choices suit his vibe
❧ the one on the right was a bit of a stretch, but something about the serpent and the sort of mystical feel to the sword seemed to fit
Oswald
❧ left: 53 inch apocalypse rider long sword which features the four horsemen of the apocalypse, retailed at $525
❧ right: 53 inch william wallace claymore with brown leather grip, retailed at $325
❧ both swords are so big that only oswald would have the strength to wield them with ease
❧ the apocalypse rider suits his reaper side, and the claymore matches his simplistic, rustic side
Kaim
❧ left: colada of el cid with blue and silver finish and scabbard, retailed at $200
❧ right: 17 inch mercy dagger with metal sheath, retailed at $58
❧ kaim would definitely have either a colada or rapier of some sort, the crossguards just suit his style
❧ both weapons have a silvery/metallic finish to them, which reminds me of silverware, and i could see him polishing these swords
Mikael
❧ left: knights templar black temple master sword with a deep etched blade, retailed at $300
❧ right: 49 inch merlin the magician sword with orb pommel, retailed at $450
❧ both of these were kinda a long shot, but for the templar, i could see mikael enjoying their history and overall aesthetic
❧ the merlin sword has a very magical and intimidating, yet angelic image that suits mikael quite well
Ricardo
❧ left: lionheart sword of king richard with black leather scabbard and belt, retailed at $480
❧ right: black and gold conan the barbarian sword with hidden dagger in the pommel, retailed at $325
❧ king richard's sword is black and leather, what else could scream ricardo louder than this? the lion head pommel is a huge plus
❧ this barbarian sword is similar to mefy's, only more gaudy and with a secret weapon hidden at the top for close range action
Noel
❧ left: 23 inch knights templar brown short sword, retailed at $75
❧ middle: small viking dagger with a rounded blade, retailed at $75
❧ right: 10 inch silver bodice scissors with red gems and scabbard, retailed at $35
❧ noel isn't one to carry large weapon; with him being an assassin, he'd need something small, unnoticeable, and easy to transport
❧ the templar sword and viking dagger are simple and small, while still being tastefully decorative enough to match his aesthetic
❧ the scissors are just a shoutout to him being a hair stylist lol
Lucas
❧ left: roman gladius of julius caesar with wooden grip, retailed at $285
❧ right: gold secret love dagger with wooden grip and locket pommel, retailed at $145
❧ the simplistic yet elegant craftsmanship along with the gold and wood combinations scream lucas' aesthetic
❧ the different style of a gladius and the secret of the dagger match lucas nicely in that there's just something that sets him apart from the others

Stars, Tears, and Blood-Soaked Gears
Before you read.. : the main character of the little story snippets' name is Aeris, and I've adapted some of these stories from roleplay scenarios I've done over discord. Oddly enough, they're my spidersona! I guess I just got a bit too creative and strayed from the basic idea of a spider person and made this poor thing a cosmic guardian.. Enjoy though! Just please don't comment about how they might be out of place as a spider person, trust me I'm well aware.
part one , the legend
Stories tell of an ancient protector, their presence scattered throughout the cosmos. In a realm or planet's time of desperate need, a hero would emerge from the void - obscure and mysterious, speaking in hushed whispers and leaving without a trace once their work was done. Many believed this entity to be a god, or perhaps an ancient cosmic entity taking pity on the mortals scattered across the stars. Eventually this protector began to take new forms, their appearance once obscured by shadow and dust transforming into something more recognizable over the eons - The Hero was not one person or god, but many many mortals under the same title. They called themselves The Acien; beings believed to be chosen to protect all that they could under the blessing of their deity. So as many more of these "Acien"s began to come and go, their silent whispers grew into true voices as their dark silhouettes matured into shining armour accompanied by the same crystal always attached to their bodies in different places. This was not a spirit or god, but true individuals operating under oath. Paladins. No matter how many there were, there were always the same defining traits: That shining yellow crystal
A recurring theme of gears and clockwork
And the symbol of a star or eight legged creature, oddly reminiscent of an earth "spider".
Graduation day. After years of hard work, combat training, and enough classes to make the average human's head spin, it was finally time for all of it to amount to something. The next Acien was to be chosen, and the rest of the soon-to-be alumni would become knights - members of the royal guard. As all 200 students of the current class sat in the auditorium, the dean and other members of staff opened the event, excited to find out who would become the newest "saviour of the cosmos". The Aranean crystal was presented in the front of the room, and soon student after student came in contact with it as their names were called. Maybe a flicker here or there, but nothing at all. They were handed their certificates, medals, and even a sword for the top 10 students. This was the kind of event you'd just drift through - dissociated, distant, awaiting its end. At least that's how they felt. Our "protagonist", the next Acien. As they walked up to the stage, they thanked their teachers and accepted their awards - spacey. Distant. They had almost no hope that they'd be the "chosen one". They nearly ignored the crystal entirely by pure mistake, but the crystal certainly didn't ignore them. They didn't notice the quiet whispers of their fellow graduates when it began to glow in their presence, snapping them out of their dazed autopilot as the thing almost seemed to call their name. Everyone remained silent, or at the very least quiet enough as they slowly drifted towards it, hand hovering over the glowing object..
Soon a sharp scream pierced the silence.
It had latched onto their forehead, the newfound power painful enough to bring them to their knees, crying in agony as the foreign energy surged through them. Looking up at the headmaster, their glowing eyes rendered almost useless by the tears overwhelming them, he grabbed a sword. Standing above them, he brought the blade from one shoulder to the other, knighting them as royalty would. Some of the excess power causing them pain escaped into the sword, giving the blade the look of an impossibly beautiful sunset as it hummed with that strange energy. magic beyond comprehension. He slowly handed them the sword as their crying stopped, tears still rushing down their face as their eyes still had a faint yellow glow to them.
"Aether Academy.. it seems we have our newest Acien!"
The applause was deafening.

1-30 for the ask thing
You think you're so funny
well I'm about to be hilarious:
1: Where in the Faerûn is your Tav from?
Not from Faerûn or Toril at all. She's from Mhoried on Aebrynis rip creche Va'a'th
2: What is your character's alignment?
Chaotic good
3: Race and subclass?
Githyanki paladin (oath of ancients)
4: If your Tav was a companion, where would they be found?
Instead of making your own camp you find her camp and she offers you some soup.
5: Dark Urge or no?
No
6: What companion are you platonically close with?
Lae'zel Wyll and Karlach
7: Romantically close with?
Her own relationship with mortality
8: Who are they suspicious of?
From the main party? Gale
9: Is your Tav from Baldur's Gate? Why are they travelling there?
No. she was travelling Faerûn in search for a lich who she had a passive agressive war with for several centuries
10: Are they proficient in playing any instruments?
for some reason yes? She's not a bard, I guess it's the charisma. She plays a lute
11: Weapon of choice?
Halberd!
12: What is their orientation?
Bi!
13: What are their thoughts on killing? Is it a necessary evil or do they enjoy it?
Sometimes it's fun. She has to repress the old habits though now that she thinks it's bad most of the time. She considers death to be neutral.
14: What hobbies does your Tav have?
She used to play harp and do hand to hand duels. Now she plays a lute and knits. And sometimes makes weird crafts with the stuff she finds.
15: What NPC's do they like? Which one's do they dislike?
Voss is an old buddy of hers. Kind of. He saved her ass a bunch of times so she was glad when she realised he's on her side.
Big beef with Oscar though.
Also old beef with pretty much all of the Ch'r'ai
16: Do they have a favorite creature in the Faerûn?
Fell in love with cats as soon as she learned about them
17: Do they enjoy life as an adventurer?
Yes! At the beginning of her journey it was supposed to be a punishment but she grew to like it
18: What would your Tav be doing if they weren't kidnapped on the Nautiloid?
Having an existential crisis under a tree I guess
19: How do you think they'll meet they're end?
She died hilariously while the whole party was celebrating their victory she stabbed herself rip queen you absolute legend
20: Would they destroy the elder brain or control it?
Sacrificed literally everything to destroy it
21: What is your Tav's favorite spell?
Telekinesis! She used to use it a lot during her prime years, now she can only treat herself every once in a while with a telekinesis scroll
22: What languages is your character fluent in?
Common, Gith, Draconic and Celestial.
She used to be in K'azz'jak'n, Aboleth and Yuan-ti but she forgot most of those.
Trying to learn Thayan at this point in her story
23: What do they do after the absolute crisis?
Rotting in the dirt baby! Just like she wanted
24: Does your character believe in the afterlife?
Yeah and it grounds her belief that "death is good actually" even more
25: What arcana major best represents your Tav?
The Hermit and The World
26: What animal best represents your Tav?
Goanna
27: What was their life like before the events of BG3?"
(The briefest summary of the story I can make rn)
Knight to Commander entered her war criminal era, blew up her own creche rip creche Va'a'th
went through ego death, hung out on a desert for 200 years
betrayed and abandoned she fucked off into the woods to have fun
28: Is your character the de facto leader of the party? Or do they consider someone else to be the leader?
Yeah she naturally takes the role and she proves herself capable of keeping everyone together and alive so the party is pretty cool with it
She's everyone's cool aunt
29: Does your Tav want to utilize the tadpole powers or not?
She wants to pluck that thing out like a leech
30: What's your favorite thing about your Tav?
Started a war by pestering her cousin.
Someone once gave her flowers and she was so confused she ate them
Very short and throwable
By all accounts should be dead
