I was involved in Sherlock and Voltron fandoms and let me say that SPN fandom (in regards to hellers) exhibits the same fandom behavior.

They over-analyse every minuscule detail rather than watching the actual show and narrative and story that's being told. They believe in the stuff they created and over-analyzed. They believe they are a selective group of people in the fandom who ''can see The Real Intent'' of the show.

They create a circlejerk and echo chamber community among themselves to make themselves and other people believe in those ''metas'' that they came up with, then at the end final stage-- blame other people, creators for ''queerbaiting''. And going as far as to claim that there are conspiracies regarding why their ship didn't sail.

Sherlock fans' conspiracy - they legit made hundreds of paged essay or videos on YT explaining why Johnlock was always meant to be canon. Their conspiracy was that the writers were somehow restained from doing so. There was a secret finale episode that has never aired on screen. It was changed at the last second.

Voltron fandom made the same thing- writing hundreds of pages of ''analyses'' and ''essays'' that somehow *definitely* proved that their gay ship Klance was going to be canon and it was sooooo obvious but the ''dumb dumb'' GA was just missing it. Only the shippers could see The Real Intent of the writers and that intent was making Klance canon.

Hellers thought Destiel was there to see, it just wasn't apparent to the others who couldn't Read The Obvious Text. They came up with so many scenarios, essays, and conspiracies that were so far-fetched that even sometimes other fandoms made fun of them. The ''rogue translator'' bullshit, which was was like ''the secret sherlock episode''. Hellers saying there was actually a destiel reunion at the finale but it was deleted, Misha actually filmed it but then the evil CVV came and just deleted those scenes and Castiel's love was supposed to be reciprocated but they restrained the writers in a conspiracy theory way. They compared CVV to ''Chuck who was meddling with the finale and the real story''..... You get the point.

It is always pathetic and toxic when a fandom involves such drama and a group of people who never seem to get rid off their holy than thou attitude and delusions. It is especially bad when they drag other people into this mess too

Yeah, unfortunately, hellers are not unique.

I think it's possible they might hold the current batshit crown for taking it the furthest - I don't know of any other obsessive shipper fanbase that has kept watching a different show about other characters convinced it's only being made to validate their ship? But the absurdist meta, the insistence only they are smart and special enough to Really Understand the canon, the harassing of TPTB on SM, the conspiracy-think, the cult-like echo chamber that attacks anyone and everyone who doesn't agree, even if it's just a matter of not toeing the chosen line hard enough - all of it has shown up to greater or lesser degrees elsewhere.

In general, I think social media has made it a lot easier to for people to find and get sucked down deep into echo chambers that wholeheartedly believe blatantly stupid shit. When you combine that with fandom, which has long been made up of fanatic fans and already had issues with sectioning off into groups to war over whose woobie and/or ship is best? It's an unfortunate circumstance, but not really a surprising one to see this sort of thing not only present but building towards increasing extremes.

Lol I know nothing about that firefighter show except seeing gifs on your blog and I legit thought that one of those two guys died last week, it was so shocking... I don't know where I'm going with this I guess I wanted to confirm that he's alive? and are there like, legit legit prospects for them to be together?

Eddie is alive!!! After he woke up, he immediately asked for Buck and then they facetimed Eddie's son together (yeah I know). Also Eddie then revealed to Buck that last year he had changed his will to make Buck legal guardian of Christopher if anything ever happens to Eddie (yeah I KNOW). Prospects on them being together........hard to say. They both have girlfriends. Buck JUST got with his during that same episode (bc you know...they have to balance out the gayness with some het action). But Eddie has been shown to be having doubts about his gf when he was told to follow HIS heart, not his son's (YEAH I KNOW). Their relationship with each other completely eclipses any gfs they've had. I still think it could happen bc if you watch their scenes together, the way Buck reacts when Eddie is shot, the way Eddie looks at him, the way they're very clearly paralleled with Bobby and Athena (a married couple) in the episode...I just...my god. If this is queerbaiting, it's is like....egregious johnlock level of queerbaiting (will always be bitter about that hihi).

So in AO3

there are 123379 fics written under fandom tag Sherlock (TV).

Under relationship tag Irene Adler / Sherlock Holmes there are 1516 works.

1516.

And that ship apparently happened in canon (behind the scenes but like, it happened). As a comparison point, let’s look how many fics under Mycroft Holmes / Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes / Jim Moriarty.

1607 and 2102 respectively.

There are more holmescest fics than there are fics about actual canon relationship. Like I totally understand there being more fics under Jim and Sherlock’s relationship than Sherlock and Irene’s but like, incest.

Nope.

(Unfortunately, holmescest is second most popular ship for Mycroft, the most popular one being Mycroft Holmes / Greg Lestrade with 10957 fics. The only reason my faith in humanity stays is because the latter wins over the former with almost 7:1 ratio.)

And don’t even mention the amount of fics under Sherlock Holmes / Janine (167. And though the relationship wasn’t actually legit they did date in canon so the number seems low).

Now under tag Sherlock Holmes / Molly Hooper there are 8977 fics which seems pretty good for ship that is teased somewhat heavily in canon but doesn’t happen. As a comparison there are 1071 under Greg Lestrade / Molly Hooper which is the second most popular ship for Molly.

But wanna guess how many fics under Sherlock Holmes / John Watson? Wanna guess?

66430.

Like if you subtract 66430 from 123379 you get 56940 which means over half of all Sherlock (TV) fics are Johnlock fics. Over half. For a ship that (is so heavily teased you could drown in the sweet sexual tension but) isn’t canon that is a l o t.

There are only 18888 fics under Sherlock Holmes & John Watson. That is like, two sevenths when compared to the amount of Johnlock fics. And their friendship is very much canon. The ratio between Johnlock and Adlock fics is almost 44:1. The ratio between Jochlock and Sherlolly fics is over 7:1.

There are only 5831 fics under Mary Morstan / John Watson, the very much canon marriage that happened.

And now, of course, you have to remember that there are fics with more than one of these tags in use at the same time which affects the data somewhat. Like, there are 380 fics under both Irene Adler / Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes / John Watson which means ratio between (just Johnlock):(just Adlock):(both) goes 174:3:1. The ratio between (just Johnlock):(just Adlock) is 58:1.

So in conclusion I think these numbers tell pretty well what we wish would happen in the series.

Also based on AO3 the most popular ship in the fandom is Johnlock, the second is Mystrade and the third Sherlolly.

Favorite episode and why

i’m going to have to go with The Most Toys. it does SO much to further data’s character AND we see geordi not giving up on his boy and doing everything to get him back! the only thing is that i wish it had some acknowledgement of the literal trauma data has just been through!

Funniest/crackiest/it’s-terrible-but-I-still-love-it episode/scene

i’ve consumed this series so fast it’s hard to remember the episodes lmao. it HAS to be riker beaming down to the What if Sexism But Reverse planet and immediately getting pegged by the president while a plague tears through the enterprise. he’s my emotional support thot

god any of the ones where it’s like clearly a Metaphor for something but it’s a show in the late 80s so you’re like this is maybe not the BEST message. like i fully skipped the one with like an old diplomat who used a mobility device but then it was treated as a dramatic reveal that he could stand and walk a little and i just couldn’t do it

KEEPING IN MIND that i’m only on season four, i think Offspring is one of the best data episodes EVER. i like legit CRIED when she was saying goodbye and data’s heartbreaking “i wish i could say the same” and everyone around data tacitly being like oh this is love bitch GOD i’m gonna cry just thinking about it

Q really said i’m going to come back once a season to be gay and inconvenient and there’s nothing anyone else can do to stop me. for obvious reasons i like Deja-Q, since i think his friendship with data is super sweet.

Best episode/scene for a character I don’t usually like

It’s not that I don’t like Picard, I do, but he’s just always so put together and in control that it’s harder to latch onto him. I REALLY enjoyed Family for that reason- seeing him breakdown so completely, sobbing because of the trauma he’d been through, was SO powerful and i wish we got moments like that sprinkled throughout the series for everybody

Most visually beautiful or interesting episode/scene

bold of you to assume i can remember specifics like that. tng is super static, visually, and just doesn’t have the budget for the kind of effects that would make an impression, so no comment.

Most emotionally affecting episode/scene

Offspring and Family, as stated above

Most powerful use of music in an episode/scene

no one’s done the “ahh classical music *beastie boys blares* gag yet so no comment

Episode/scene that changed my perspective on the show

i don’t think my perspective’s changed so much as I just latched onto data with a frightening intensity and now i’m a star trek fan. go figure.

Episode/scene where the acting stands out

besides everything else i’ve mentioned, it’s super cool how brent spiner jekyll and hydes data & lore without being too hammy about it, and it genuinely makes it feel like two separate characters!

Overall best-written episode

Oh measure of a man. that’s a very writerly episode, with lots of thoughtful monologues and it really shows that it was written by a lawyer!

Okay, this is partially because life right now is mean but also I HOPE YOU KNOW I ALMOST HAD AN EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN AT THIS QUESTION (I couldn't choose just one, I couldn't)

Okay so that this is out of the way

It really took me some deep diving into my past ships, but my absolute favorite ones i could really pin it down to were:

• Dakavendish (Milo Murphy's Law)

Look man, the Dwampyverse is good at making dramatic gay couples and who am i to deny it. I guess this has really special place in my heart because it started a whole bunch of gay ships and I am very thankful for that. These two, just.... oh god, they make me so soft and happy. They care so much about each other. Good husbands okay. How are they not canon, they are so wonderful and I love both of them. (They also were the only ones to carry season 2 and maybe sometimes Doof, but don't at me)

• Johnlock (BBC Sherlock)

Yeah man i don't know what you want me to say here, they're Johnlock, they're gay, it's science, it's obligatory for me to mention them. Every time I get into them again, I go in DEEP into the feels, so I feel like it wouldn't be fair to leave them out.

• Lego Batjokes (The Lego Batman Movie)

Okay this one is VERY. VERY special to me. I didn't watch the movie when it came out which was a HUGE mistake. Some time last year I discovered that there were edits of these two, so obviously I was interested. I watched the movie. And holy fucking shit. I SO got back into lego. Into Ninjago too. Into everything. Best thing that happened to me. And the ship, just.... I absolutely LOVE how they're written. It is so beautiful. The intentional writing it like a romantic relationship. And the final saving the day scene, I'm - it's so beautiful. Probably one of the pairings I read the most fanfic about simply because their relationship is so much fun and there are so many interesting things you can do with it. Okay I gotta stop talking now, but the inherent beauty and tenderness of them is just so relevant, okay

• Entrapdak (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)

Did I add this one just because they've been relevant recently? Probably. But look, I - LOVE them. With all of my heart. Entrapta is legit the light of my life (okay I see this about multiple characters, BUT NOT MANY) and seeing her and Hordak together just makes me so so so happy. (Especially in season 5 okay.) They are so tender and soft and important and they make each other so happy and actually feel comfortable and they both deserve it so much and I should stop talking now before I get too into it. (Watch She-Ra, watch season 5, everything about this show is amazing.)

And my least favroite ones, well, I - to be honest, I don't really.... have them??? I mean sure there are pairings I don't love, but even those ones I'm okay with. Like, do I like every ship? No. Do I still get happy when I see that one amazing AMV of them in my youtube recommendations? Yes. I often don't go out of my way to have a special distaste for some ship. I don't know, it just makes me happy when people like something even when I don't. (Exculding pedophilia of course like ouch.)

Okay, Elsa and Jack Frost, like omg, what, just because they have ice powers and isn't he emotionally like 14 or something, I don't know, I think that's sort of creepy (Okay, yes, I said it once now, I'll never say it again, I don't - spread hate, it's just that it kinda was unsettling for me to see it be somewhat popular, but that was mostly years ago and it's not that I mind that much anyway)

How do you get inspiration too a new fic? @tildathings

I don't know, honestly. I never sit down and go, "hmm, I'd like to write a new fic, what should I write?" I just have ideas in my head all the time and generally order them so that I know what I'm going to work on next. I don't typically go hunting for story ideas

I want to know how you write in general. This story to me feels like one of those write as you go stories. Was it? @elwinglyre

I NEVER write as I go. I always have the entire thing planned before I write a single word I always know the beginning, the ending, and at least several major points that come between, at least - overplanning is just as bad as underplanning

What was the purpose of using familiar names for original characters? @wildishmazz

For OCs, it just made sense for the setting? They were going to a conference, so it couldn't possibly be all people that they already knew?

Hiiiii! Here's one for you! What was your purpose for the swans? What did they represent to you when you wrote it? We speculated on it a bit but I’d love to hear what your intentions were. @hpswl-cumbercookie

The swans! I just like swans, haha! Plus, Cambridge is full of them! No specific symbolism there... I'm pretty un-symbolic, generally. Just straight up narrative

So is Cambridge a location that is familiar to you? @bluebellofbakerstreet

Yes, not as familiar as I'd like, but I once spent three weeks in residence at one of the colleges as a guest cantor (I'm a classical singer and conductor)

Was Mycroft really just interested in solving the case, or did he have ulterior motives? @sherlock-nanowrimo

Yes, Mycroft in my writing never has ulterior romantic intentions. He rolls his eyes heartily at the entire notion, though in his heart of hearts he knows that it's probably good for Sherlock. But he would never do anything to help it happen

I loved the tension you built up between John and Sherlock, especially John not realizing that Sherlock had loved him for so long. When you're writing characterization, how exactly do you plan things out? Outline, character sketch? @elwinglyre

It all depends on the specific context. In this case, I was taking them from literally two weeks out from the end of series 4, where things were cautiously okay on the surface, but there was still all this crap lying right beneath it: John still projecting his literal self onto his notion of what and who Mary was and needing to come to see that in a more realistic and healthy (especially in terms of his mental health) way, and having the two of them (him and Sherlock) actually talk for real about their issues over the years and actually fix them. I had also already written one fake-couple-for-a-case trope and wanted this one to specifically be one where it didn't work very well for them My sole purpose in life is to make these two idiots have a full, direct, and honest conversation just ONCE, since Moftiss isn't ever going to let that happen

Is it a deliberate choice for a specifc effect that you write in present tense, or it just sounds better, or.... something else? (I'm more used to long texts being in past tense) @srebrnafh

I used to always write in past tense, but something about this fandom in particular just makes it feel right to use the present! I don't know why, but virtually all of my Sherlock stories are in present, even in my 152K novel!

Do you think Greg could tell there was seething jealousy revolving around him? @sherlock-nanowrimo

No, he's a pretty typically thick straight dude, hahaha

It's difficult to make Sherlock be all sentimental without him going out of character, yet you suceeded very well with that. How do you walk that fine line? Any tips for us common mortals writing fics? @shiplocks-of-love

it definitely has to be approached with caution! Sherlock is FULL of emotion, though - it's all there, right beneath the surface, and the very reason that Mycroft always lectures him about it, because he IS vulnerable. The entire façade of disinterest is a carefully cultivated, yet absolutely untrue one! He cares so much - but he's also absolutely unused to expressing any of it, or whether he should at all, and if so, how. He hates looking bad at anything, which makes it all extra difficult for him and John, being emotionally repressed and all around hung up, doesn't make it any easier!

Do you find it easier to write as John or Sherlock's POV? You do both so brilliantly, so I'm just curious @inevitably-johnlocked

Sherlock, all the way. I love writing John's POV wholeheartedly, but I'm very much Sherlock in my own head/heart!

Jodie, she was a very good character in this fic. She really made us think about how we have become mistrusting against and good people in fic’s. Why are there not so many good people written in fic’s do you think. @tildathings

Jodie WAS also meant to be a red herring! It's not a technique that I've used often - revealing the murderer quite obviously very early on, and then just having the case revolve around them needing to prove it. So Jodie was also just meant to throw in some suspicion, for interest heh

What inspired you to use evensong in this story? I don’t know much about it so I don’t really know its significance. @hpswl-cumbercookie

I'm an Anglican who's worked in Anglican churches for a long time and it's just a really beautiful service! Plus, in the music world, Evensong is a service that non-Christians often attend strictly for the music, so it made sense to me that the Holmes family might have, too? I depicted Sherlock's mother as being the Vegas show-type, but his father being the one who took them to Evensong. Plus the Christmas Eve Lessons & Carols at King's College really is a place for society people to be seen, etc It's a beautiful service that's more music than anything else

Would you ever write Pre S4 or Pre S3 again, in that case? Or do you go with "as each series happens"? @inevitably-johnlocked

No, once a new series has aired, I'm stuck in the phase of post-that series but I don't consider anything written pre-canon to be AU, either - just canon compliant with the then-known canon

I also think of Jodie as a Mary Sue (one that I would like to be like). Is she you? @elwinglyre

No, I would never deliberately write a Mary Sue!

Hmm - that's hard to answer! it depends on the case! sometimes I'll google street view parts of London for hours just until I've found the perfect street to set the murder on I've also googled "dodgy parts of London" and stuff like that

I was wondering very much over why Andrea didn’t try to kill the bride or the ex? @tildathings

The bomb could easily been going of somewhere else then at the conference. She wouldn't have killed outside her "territory", though. If they'd ever gone to her hotel, she might well have!

Can I say a thing about the antidote? I researched poisons a LOT for this story, like how quickly they act, what they taste like, how curable they are, etc, and I chose the poisons in this story very specifically, the only antidote that acts this quickly - aka, fast enough to save Jodie here - is literally the one that comes up in this story, and it's literally not in use in the UK yet. It's been approved for use in the US only, since it was developed there, so that's why the random American doctor showed up. It was the only realistic way to get that antidote into this conference it's called hydroxocobalamin and it's only been around for about three months now I genuinely do my homework for my fics, lol @silentauroriamthereal

The scene where John gets upset that the others are congratulating Sherlock on sex, we talked about it a lot and it was my favorite conversation in the chat. There were some slightly different takes on what exactly it was that John was pissed about. Being a bottom? Being a conquest? Gay sex in general? What does this say about his views on sex? What were your thoughts in writing it? @sherlock-nanowrimo

All of the above! Being thought of as gay is something that I truly believe that John has a problem. John suffers from classic Short Man Syndrome, and being naturally perceived as the bottom is something I feel like he would naturally rebel against when he's not in his best place in terms of being emotionally healthy but especially the thought of having been a conquest, or having "caved" to something that Sherlock wanted and he didn't so much but I also think that John is so fascinating because his range of possibility is so huge. While I would say that it's absolutely in character for him to be a COMPLETE douche (because he absolutely has been!), I would say that it's equally in charater for him to be the soft-eyed, gently-smiling guy that we see after Sherlock's "England would fall" scene

LOL As an author, do YOU get frustrated that they're just not talking? I've always wondered. @inevitably-johnlocked

YES, omg, all the time!! like I said, it's my purpose in life to MAKE THEM TAAAALK but it has to get there realistically and there's just this huge backlog of stuff that needs talking about now, which makes it all the harder

John fascinates me, his relationship with family and friends. What do you think happened to his parents? Have you thought about them before writing anyone of your fic’s? @tildathings

I don't have a single theory. I've written multiple versions of what could have happened, just as I have at least 6 different versions of Harry now

I was reading another fic recently, where the author said in the notes that they had already addressed certain S4 things in other fics and didn't feel like it in this one. Do you ever feel that way? @sherlock-nanowrimo

Oh, for sure for instance, I've written John discovering Sherlock's whip scars so many times now that I don't always include it in every single story now. Ditto for him discovering that he would have died (snipers) if Sherlock hadn't jumped, that it was blackmail, that Sherlock's silence was protecting his life so I don't always have them have the FULL DISCUSSION OF EVERYTHING in every single story

Did you have headcanons for Sherlock's past memories of the place (Cambridge)? @sherlock-nanowrimo

Not specifically, just family trips, usually during the holidays

Last fic club meeting all of us had ideas for a second fic. From bachelor party sorry forgot what that’s called in English, to marriage with very much fluff. Is fluffy story something you could think of writing? Oh! And competition between Rock Greg and Greg Lestrade who made the best party! @tildathings

I never deliberately write "fluff" and find the term insulting, honestly that said, I am planning on a sequel to Isosceles, my most recent, where they go to LA to visit Corey (the OC in that story) and that will be on the lighter side, haha "fluff", to me, says "without substance" rather than simply "romantic" or "happy ending"

Can I just ask, as the author, writing that first get together after the ball, where was your mind? I'm not quite sure how to word it. like, Sherlock's and John's actions both make a lot of sense and very much feed off one another, but how did you get to that action specifically?. does that make sense? @hpswl-cumbercookie

My intention there was for them to hook up but without having had the major conversations that needed to happen first, plus John's jealousy rearing its ugly head and causing him (and remember, he was drunk and very much sans filters!) to say something hurtful that Sherlock definitely remembered, and for it to be the opposite of fixing their issues, but exacerbate them even further I did want their natural (and seven years built-up!) chemistry to take over, but for it to have happened out of order
