BJD tools

It has been my (limited) experience that various tools and accessories used for BJDs are repurposed items with a "BJD" mark-up.

For example, "kips" are just 1-mm-thickness flexible silicone washers used in numerous other applications. You can buy them in lots of 100 for a few bucks - unless you're buying them from a BJD dealer. Then they're $0.50 to $1 a piece. Put "craft" or "hobby" on anything and expect a mark-up, too. I tend to avoid "craft" and "hobby" stores for that reason.

Similarly, elastic cord used to string BJDs can be purchased in 10-, 25-, and 50-meter lots for $10-$20 as shock cord - unless you're buying from a doll company or dealer. Then, you might get around a meter for the same price.

I want to wire a few of my more twisty dolls, especially an old Dollmore Model F body. So I was positive that the wire I received with another doll has to be sold at a hardware store. I just wasn't sure what it was called.

After some searching, I think I've found my BJD wire: I believe it's called garden wire or plant wire. It's plastic-coated, malleable (forms and holds shapes), and comes in various gauges. I looked up a steel gauge to millimeter conversion chart (here), but after a disastrous purchase from AliExpress, I'm going to go look at something in person. The gauge on the wire might reference the size of the steel inside, or it might be referring to the whole wire with plastic coating, and it's not clear which they're referring to on the websites I checked.

I'm headed out to the local hardware store with some BJD wire in my pocket. I'll report what I've found when I get back.

I recently repainted my sweet little Itsy Betsy as she’d badly damaged her last Faceup by leaping off the shelf in my doll cabinet, trying to take dolls with her. Fortunately no other doll got damaged, and it was the perfect excuse to finally repaint her as I hated the last Faceup I put on her.

I’m really happy with the changes I made this time around in painting her. She’d been based on a peacock jumping spider, so her old Faceup was really dramatic, but it didn’t suit her. Not only did I soften her look, but I put the extra painted eyes along her cheekbones, which gave me room to put eyebrows on her.

Quick before and after of her. It’s funny to me how much her body’s mellowed, she needs a good cleaning to match her head again!

Marcel's new hair looks like one of my student's mum's hair lol (I like her a lot btw) and Sońka looks like a modern-day Cleopatra babe. Their hair are so soft and cuddly - just like their bellies :)

Do you recognize these dolls?

Estate sale person I met at doll show sent me these pictures. I don't recognize any of them - but I'm planning to visit, help match caps to heads, restring, etc. Estate sale person desperate to get rid of these dolls. If you see something, say something. Preferably to me. I mean, you can tell your dog, but unless your dog also knows estate sale person...

IDs would be nice, because Estate sale person has a pile of COAs and doesn't know which COA goes with what doll.

I don't recognize most of these sculpts - they are from before I started collecting.

Un-dying a doll is a waiting game. You want most of the dye off but you don’t want to destroy the resin in the process. After about twenty minutes in the acetone bath most of the tan dye had been removed. Her resin was SOFT. I put her in an ice bath to help disperse the acetone effects. The resin will remain soft probably well over a day and then harden up to a workable state again. As of now she is a pleasant peachy color to the eye. I’ll have to evaluate her in the daylight to see if any light sanding needs to be done.
