In my Shakespeare seminar today:
Prof: *concluding remarks* Timon is the only tragic protagonist who dies on his own terms. All the others are either stabbed or die similarly tragically…
*brief silence as everyone absorbs that*
Me: And on that note, happy Ides of March!

a new kind of romance, pt 7
part 6 | cuddles - - - -
🎁 | mistletoe magic
“Ooh, look she’s doing it again.”
“Doing what?” Kara asked, shrugging off her jacket to join Nia and Brainy at a hightop laden with empty glasses.
“Mistletoe magic,” Nia sighed fondly.
“Mistletoe what-?” Kara glanced at Brainy who looked flush with a smudge of Nia’s shade of red on his own lips, and then her eyes tracked to Kelly and Alex two tables away giggling under the glowing branch of green leaves that glistened with the telltale golden sparks of magic. Of Lena’s magic. “Oh.”
She found the culprit loitering on the far end of the bar nursing a drink, smiling, and looking totally and completely huggable, and Kara’s mood immediately brightened. Not that it was sour: it was Al’s holiday party after all.
Kara’s natural reaction to seeing Lena was to superspeed over and engulf her into a super-sized hug and hope the burst of surprise and laughter would land quiet and private into the crook of her neck.
She very nearly did exactly that except just as she was about to shift into sixth gear and race over Kara realized Lena wasn’t alone. More specifically, she was bookended by two people: Sam and... Andrea.
Which was… fine. Kara loved Sam and all the support she had for Lena. But Andrea? Kara was trying to find warmth for Andrea.
“How long has she been here?” Kara asked before the green-eyed monster could be swallowed down.
“Who?” Nia asked, distracted by a stuffed potato skin.
“No one," Kara blinked, brushing away imaginary crumbs from the table, "nothing. Forget it-”
“I believe Kara is referring to either Ms. Rojas or Ms. Arias,” Brainy interrupted, being all correct and stuff. Kara shot him a dark look that went missed because he was still trying to rub off remnants of lipstick.
“Oh, dunno,” Nia replied with a shrug. “I think they came together?”
“Sam and Andrea?” Kara asked for confirmation even though she definitely didn’t care.
“No, Andrea and Lena.”
“Oh. Sure. Right.”
Positively, absolutely, for sure wasn’t bothered by that.
“Why?” Kara asked nearly a minute later, interrupting a conversation she wasn’t listening to.
Nia paused mid-sentence and glanced at a very distraught-looking Kara. “Why what?”
“Why did they come together?”
“Who?”
“I believe Kara is referring to Ms. Rojas and-”
“Did they have a work meeting?” Kara interrupted, eyes jumping back toward Andrea who was far too cozy and far too close to Lena which was… fine. It was. It really was.
Nia’s mouth opened to respond. Then it closed. Then her eyes narrowed. Then they lifted. Then a smirk the size of the Nile spread across her face. “Why do you care?”
And Kara didn’t like the Nile-sized smile. She didn’t like it one bit. “No reason.”
“I dunno. Brainy, does she look a bit jealous to you?”
“I’m not-” Kara tried to cut in - whined, practically.
“Kara, you do look rather, as they say, ‘put-out’.”
“Does it have anything to do with Andrea subtly guiding Lena toward that mistletoe next to them-?”
“What? She isn’t-”
“Or are you just jealous Lena’s full attention is on her ex at all?”
Two things happened next: the first was that Kara fish-mouthed and blushed furiously because yea, obviously she was jealous. Who wouldn’t be jealous of someone getting Lena’s time. Not that Kara wanted to control her time or who she spent it with or…
And then the second thing happened. And that second thing was like an Acme anvil falling on her Wile E. Coyote state of confusion: she registered Nia's actual words.
“Her ex? Who’s ex? Sam’s ex? You… you mean Sam and Andrea, right? They’re exes?”
Right? she shouted in her brain and maybe out loud.
The look on Nia’s face did not support this thesis because the look on Nia’s face was like she was looking at an alien, which technically Kara was, but ‘idioms’.
“I don't know about Ms. Aria, but Ms. Rojas dated Lena for a number of years at boarding school,” Brainy confirmed and shattered Kara’s hopes and dreams and maybe her heart too just a little bit because at that exact moment Lena burst into laughter and Andrea looked so proud for being the source of said laughter and no, Kara’s eyes were not glowing red that would be preposterous but if they were it’s not like anyone would notice with all the colorful lights hung everywhere-
“Hey you know your eyes are glowing, right?” Nia asked before sucking up a bright purple drink from a tiny blue straw and smiling like the dang cheshire cat.
Ok, so yea, maybe her eyes glowing red wasn’t, like, the greatest.
“I need to get some food,” Kara mumbled, abandoning Brainy and Nia for the bar where M’gann was telling off a drunk Haverack wobbling on of his stool and J’onn was stepping up to intervene. Before his stony disposition could do its trick though, a tickle of gold flecks from overhead stalled the entire confrontation.
Kara wasn’t going to pout. She wouldn’t do that. She was a way calmer, cooler, collected-er kryptonian than that.
What Kara was going to do though was lean against the bar and stare longingly at M’gann laughing when J’onn pointed to the glowing mistletoe that had not-so-subtly appeared above them.
The Haverack fell off his stool again, but that wasn’t what kept Kara’s attention.
“I’m sure M’gann is willing to share, darling.”
It wasn’t fair that Lena could make Kara jump and send her super calm, cool, collected demeanor catapulting out the nearest window with a little whisper. It also wasn’t fair that Lena was so so pretty leaning in next to her while wearing nothing more than a simple pair of jeans and sweater. A sweater that was too long in the arms and bunched at Lena’s wrists and made Kara want to pull her close and fly her home and wrap them both in a blanket for the rest of eternity.
Naturally Kara replied with a stammer and in a fit of indecision, she grabbed Lena's hand and also winked and then booped her head against Lena's shoulder.
Which was far from normal. It was because Lena was so pretty tonight.
But Lena was always pretty. She could make cardboard overalls look good. And sure, Kara had seen from a distance that she was just as jaw-dropping as ever, but seeing her up close? in Kara’s own space? where she could get lost in Lena’s soft pretty skin? where she could feel the piercing meant-only-for-her gaze and get all sorts of weak-kneed and breathless? where she could take in the perfect shampoo-perfumey-Lena mix that couldn’t be imitated because Kara, curious and missing Lena while she was off saving acquisitions and mergers once in Shanghai, had tried recreating the scent but failed?
“I thought you weren’t going to make it. Duty calling and all that.”
“I’ve got one ear on the city, and deadlines can wait one more night,” Kara explained, trying to ignore the distraction that was Lena. Always Lena.
"Don't let Cat hear you say that," Lena smirked.
“Did I miss anything?”
“Just the usual: M’gann’s eggnog has half the bar dancing, though it looks like some hit it a bit too hard,” Lena said with a nod toward the passed-out Haverack, “and Nia is dragging Brainy under every green leaf in the place,” Lena chuckled. "Not sure whose going to tap out first."
“It sounds like someone is to blame for that ‘mistletoe magic’,” Kara replied, nudging Lena with her shoulder.
Lena hummed, her feigned ignorance betrayed by a revealing smirk.
“Care for some?”
“S-some?” Kara choked, ears ringing.
“Mistletoe magic,” Lena explained slowly, one perfectly sculpted eyebrow arching with the elegance of a chandelier or an umbrella or hand-painted porcelain or-or… Kara didn’t know. She wasn’t thinking clearly.
Kara glanced across the bar toward Alex who was giving her a knowing stare and supportive smile that really looked more like a grimace mixed with nausea which meant only one thing: here it was, the chance. The chance Kara had spent minutes and hours and days pacing and hoping and yammering Alex’s ear off for.
She had gone through every stage of fretting and panicking and unintentionally tearing her couch cushions in half before Kelly’s calmer touch gave her the confidence to believe in her own feelings and maybe - maybe - even Lena's.
Because that’s what Lena was implying now, right?
It was a frosting-covered finger. It was an intimately placed zipper. It was nonexistent personal boundaries that Kara wanted and wanted and wanted.
Now was the chance to put those feelings in motion. It was the perfect setting: holiday tunes were playing, lights were twinkling, the laughter and raucous of friends and family surrounded them. It couldn’t be any better, which was why Kara took a readying breath, propped herself against the bar in a way she hoped looked confident, and offered what Alex would later call the most manic-looking smile she’d ever seen.
“Well if it’s on the table…” Kara began bravely with a throat-clearing to steady herself, “uh, do I get to… er, you know,” she continued with the elegance of a newborn calf taking its first steps, “to pick?”
The wagging eyebrows probably didn’t help her efforts because she was met with a small Lena scowl that made Kara swallow and mutter some incoherent set of sounds and extend her finger toward the sprinkle of mistletoe hanging around the bar like Lena didn’t understand.
But then Lena said “oh” in this small sort of way that made Kara think that maybe Lena didn’t understand. So she clarified:
“Put me in, coach!” Kara said, puffing up her chest with the kind of confidence reserved only for superheroes and poorly thought through actions.
And technically they were words. Maybe not the best words. Definitely not her best words. But together, it made a semi-coherent sentence that surely - definitely - made her intentions clear.
“Put you… in? I wasn’t… I meant-”
“You meant that since everyone else is… you know...” Kara said conspiratorially with a hand gesture that was meant to say everything else. “I don’t wanna miss out on that holiday spirit, right?”
“I didn’t, uh,” Lena began, a small cough and blush making her discomfort clear which made Kara want to hoover back those misguided intentions real fast and keep her dumb mouth shut.
Then Lena’s scowl deepened to a version Kara wasn’t familiar with and definitely couldn’t identify which made Kara’s heart plummet. “Right, of course. Who did you-”
“I call dibs!” came an excited shout from behind Lena.
And yea, maybe Kara should’ve been better at observing her surroundings because there was Sam.
Who was standing on the other side of Lena.
The whole time.
Not like it could be Kara’s fault though: Lena just had a way of making the rest of the world disappear.
“Uh- '' Kara stammered because that technically - definitely - was not what she meant and having Sam sidekick her way through Kara’s ‘feelings’ reveal was not the chance she had pictured. But from the look of tempered frustration on Lena’s face, maybe she should be thanking Sam.
“Pucker up babes,” Sam said, dancing around Lena to split the two. “Lena, you don’t mind, right?” Sam asked, eyes bright and mischievous and far too excited for Kara’s waning courage.
“I don’t really think Kara needs my permission,” Lena replied with a tone that sounded… mad? Was Lena mad?
“I meant the green leafy goods; get your magic hands moving, Luthor,” Sam said, jazz hands waving at her own sides.
“I-I'd only meant it for, uh, real couples-”
“Oh,” Kara answered while a ton of metaphorical bricks squeezed her chest empty of air and hope and confidence.
Kara peered past Sam toward Lena who looked flush and annoyed and her jaw was clenched like a vice and, oh gosh, Kara had misread the whole situation.
Maybe it wasn’t a frosting-covered finger or an intimately placed zipper or nonexistent personal boundaries that Kara wanted and wanted and wanted.
Maybe Kelly and Alex had talked her into a false sense of security. Maybe she had just barged in and ruined a perfectly good time. Had she just ruined a perfectly good friendship? Kara didn’t have an answer so instead she stared at the floor which was peppered with fallen mistletoe leaves and dirty napkins and cobwebs and… was that a ring?
“Oh relax, Lena. What’s the harm in a little-”
“Sam, enough-”
“I was kidding,” Kara practically shouted as an uncomfortable hand fidgeted with a pair of absent glasses.
For having super hearing, Kara could only make out pin-drop silence, Sam’s shocked “what?” and Lena’s racing heartbeat.
“There isn’t, you know… I was just kidding. Can you imagine that? Supergirl kissing someone? Here? And-and besides, Lena’s right - you’re right,” Kara rambled, looking at her best friend who was decidedly not looking at her, “real couples only, and there isn’t, you know, anyone here who… uhm, yea.”
And then she forced a laugh because she wanted all of it to end.
It sort of did after that:
Awkwardness ensued through silent sips and half-glances. Sam did her best to rope in the others, but Kara couldn’t shake the discomfort.
Then Alex and Kelly offered their goodbyes - “babysitters are expensive!” - with Kara getting a tighter hug than usual from Alex that didn't make anything feel better.
Sam followed moments later with a matching reason and what looked like an apologetic smile - “minus the babysitter part. Ruby would skin me alive if I hired a babysitter. She already thinks she’s twenty.”
Nia, with Brainy in tow, made some excuse about needing to replace a lightbulb that no one believed because by then the color Nia’s lips had started the night with was now the color of Brainy's face, neck, and collar.
Which left Kara and Lena, and boy did Kara want to apologize for overstepping. Her fingers tapped on a bottle she didn’t remember getting while mustering the courage and bravery she thought she remembered having. She almost found it again.
Almost.
Except that’s the exact moment Kara realized it wasn’t just her and Lena, because Andrea picked that exact moment to reappear.
“Where’d everyone go?”
Lena said words and Kara nodded but didn’t hear. What she did hear was Andrea’s suggestion that they call it a night. Then she heard Andrea propose she and Lena share a cab - “we live two blocks apart, after all” - and within seconds had both jackets at the ready.
Then Lena, who hadn’t said another word to Kara all night, looked briefly conflicted toward Kara before nodding.
“Goodnight, Kara.”
And then it did end. It ended without the right words or a hug and definitely not a kiss. It ended before it even began with Kara standing alone under a branch of forgotten mistletoe.

You sighed as you flipped another page on your book, a pink highlighter on your hand and a bunch of loose pages resting in your lap. Were you studying on a friday night again? Yes. Sure, you had promised to yourself that this kind of nerdy behaviour would be left behind in high school, but who could blame you? It's not like you had anything else to do and you actually enjoyed studying.
- Oh, absolutely not. - a familiar voice with a thick accent sounded behing you and you smiled.
- Hey, Yelena. - you turned your head towards the voice, seeing the blonde girl climbing out the window. - Nice to see you're home again. And still unable to use the door.
- I already told you, sometimes I need to climb the window so I can make sure that no one else can climb the window. It is science. Just like your book. - she said, taking off her shoes and coat, her cheeks red from the cold weather. - Now, what are you doing reading a book? When I left, a whole week ago, you were doing that exact same thing.
- Well, I have to. It’s called studying. And if it helps, it was a different book last week. - you answered, watching as the blonde went straight for the kitchen. - But I wanna know about you. Your super secret mission went well? Where were you, after all? Now you can tell me, right?
- Bolivia. And yes, it went well. No one blew me up and it was not for lack of trying. - she said, frowning at the refrigerator. - Now, tell me, Y/N, this studying of yours does not require eating? There’s nothing in here.
- I was planning on ordering something later and I didn’t know you were coming home today. - you said, finally closing the book and resting your head against the armchair. - What do you mean they were trying to blow you up? Are you okay?
- Peachy. - Yelena said, sitting on the sofa. - I wasn’t even shot this time. It’s a big win.
- I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this. - you glanced at her with your eyes a little widened. You still remembered when, a year ago, Yelena showed up holding your announcement and asking if you were the one looking for a roommate. At the time, you didn’t knew you were getting a best friend and a giant headache all in one person. - You know, every time you leave I get worried sick.
- That is very sweet, Y/N Y/L/N, but you don’t have to worry. I am the best, so yeah, no danger here. - she smiled and you held back a laugh. Yelena could be so unintentionally conceited sometimes. - Now, will you please stop with the books, order some pizza and watch a movie with me? I missed you a lot.
- Own, Lena, I missed you too! - your heart melted at the russian’s words, smiling at her. - I’ll just bring this stuff to my room and then we can watch anything you’d like, okay?
She agreed with her head and you piled up all your books, papers and pens and carried them to your room, leaving it all on your desk. Fishing a blanket out of your closet, you picked up your phone and went back to the living room, sitting comfortably in the armchair again as you dialed the number of the pizza place you guys always ordered from.
- The pizza will be here in 40 minutes! - you yelled to make sure Yelena would hear you and went back to your phone, waiting for the girl to come back.
A few minutes later, she showed up in sweatpants and a My Little Pony white t-shirt, her hair wet and carrying a sweet lavender smell. She used your shampoo, but you didn’t really care, just watching as she practically fell onto the couch, resting her head against the pillows.
- So, what are we watching? - you asked, toying with the remote.
- Can we watch the one with the sirens again? You know, the one with the song that was stuck in my head for like a month? - she asked with big puppy eyes.
- Barbie A Mermaid Tale? - you asked with a laugh. Yelena was a big Barbie fan, but she specifically loved this one. - I think we’ve seen this at least five times.
- Please? It’s my favorite! - she pleaded, holding her hands together. - I love the evil fish.
- Okay, okay. But I’ll choose the next one.
- YES! - she exclaimed in pure delight, making you laugh again. If there was something you loved about Yelena, was her almost childlike joy about the little things in life. It was adorable.
You were about to press play when she cleared her throat, making you look in her direction only to find her already staring at you, brows furrowed.
- What? - you asked, a little confused.
- Aren’t you forgetting something? - she asked, rolling her eyes at your absolutely lack of perception. - Cuddling, Y/N Y/L/N, you’re forgetting the most important part of a movie marathon. Get your ass on this couch right now.
You couldn’t help but smile as you got up, laying beside the blonde on the couch and throwing your blanket over the two of you. It wasn’t long until Yelena’s arm was around your waist and the russian’s cheek was resting against your head. You hummed in contentment, feeling relaxed and warm and safe, like you always were with her.
- Now you can start. - she said simply as she placed a kiss against your forehead, making your heart melt all over again.
- It’s nice to have you home. - you said softly, grabbing the blonde’s hand and kissing her knuckles. - You know I love you, right?
- Yeah, you big softie, I love you too. - she said rolling her eyes as she kissed your cheek. - Now shush, my movie is starting.
You just smiled, too enthralled in the feeling of being in Yelena’s arms. She was home now, and it was all that mattered. After all, she was your home.

'When all you wanted was to be wanted, wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now'
-
Kara arrives fifteen minutes early.
She gets dropped off in front of the school by Eliza, and promises her she’ll be okay on her own. Once she’s alone, she crosses the quad by herself.
Earbud strings dangle across Kara’s body as she walks, head down, focused on the leaves and how they crunch beneath her boots. Taylor Swift’s Fearless echos through the tiny speakers and Kara can’t help but drum her fingers against her thigh to the beat.
The air is salty and damp with the smell of fallen leaves. It feels almost like she’s stepped into a painting, with the castle-like brick building in the foreground. It’s surrounded by trimmed hedges and trees with orange branches. Alex has always said private school kids are a different breed. But god, is their world fascinating.
She finds the meeting spot with relative ease. It’s a round concrete picnic table just off the main path, near the massive lion statue Lena described in her email. Kara sits and plops her backpack beside her, quieting the music on her iPod so she can focus as she takes out her pens and spiral notebook.
It’s supposed to be a simple project.
Sophomores from Metropolis Tech work with sophomores from the all-girls private school, Spence to clean up parks in the city. The whole thing is worth five extra credit points on her Earth Science final. Five extra credit points Kara desperately needs- because what kind of cruel joke is it to put an alien in Earth Science when they’ve only been on the planet for a year?
She gets her stuff organized and looks up, freezing when she sees the girl she’s been paired up with standing across the table. For someone with super hearing– spatial awareness does not seem to be a skill Kara possesses.
“You’re– are you Lena?” She stammers.
The girl nods. She has raven hair and pale skin like the vampires in the movies Alex forces her to watch. For a second, Kara selfishly wonders if she might be an alien too. She just looks so unlike the other people Kara knows. But Eliza says it’s rude to make assumptions, so Kara quickly tries to suppress those thoughts. Lena would likely perceive being asked about her home planet as a targeted insult.
“I’m Kara, it’s nice to meet you,” Kara says after a moment. “I like your outfit– you look so professional!”
Lenas brow furrows as she looks down at herself. She’s wearing a grey sweater vest with a blue crest over a white button-down and blue plaid skirt.
“It’s a uniform,” she says. “We all wear this.”
“Oh.”
Kara scans the campus- for the first time noticing all the girls in identical get-ups, all paired with knee-socks and Mary Jane shoes. A few of them wear dresses instead of skirts, one or two with school-branded sweatpants beneath them. Where had they all been five minutes ago, before she’d made a complete fool of herself?
“So… I was thinking we could go to Glacier Park,” Lena says, breaking the silence. “Most girls go to Central because it’s bigger. But Central is a tourist trap– Glacier Park hardly gets the same environmental attention.”
She’s quiet, keeping her eyes fixated on her hands as she speaks. But even so, she seems so sure of herself.
Maybe it’s a private school thing, Kara thinks. The students here are so smart, they don’t need to follow the social rules everyone else seems to abide by.
“Unless you were thinking something different?”
“Uh… I guess I hadn’t really thought about it,” Kara admits with a nervous laugh. “My classes and everything have been kinda crazy.”
Lena nods but doesn’t respond. Kara can’t tell if she’s judging her or if she just doesn’t have anything to say.
“You know… midterms week. Can you believe they do this every year?”
She isn’t sure why she keeps talking. In the emails they’ve sent, Lena only ever mentions the project. She doesn’t seem to be the chatty type– the type to care that Kara’s had four exams this week alone and that that’s why she can’t bring herself to be as invested in this whole thing as she should be.
It’s just that Lena is right there and maybe the reason she reminds Kara of aliens is that she may just be the prettiest girl she’s ever met– on Krypton or on Earth. And sure she isn’t talkative but that doesn’t mean Kara can help it either.
“Yeah,” Lena says, expression blank.
For a second, Kara freezes. She isn’t sure what she’s supposed to do with that.
“We um, we should start on the report too,” Lena restarts, as if nothing happened at all. “I brought some articles on pollution levels in the city. I thought it might be easier to get the reading portion out of the way today, so we can focus on the actual cleanup later.”
“Oh… okay, yeah, that sounds good.”
\\\\\
They go with Lena’s suggestion and meet at the entrance of Glacier Park.
Kara gives it her best attempt to look nice for her. Alex says it’s silly– they’re going to be cleaning up garbage all day, so why does she need to look good? But Kara can’t help it.
Lena is clean and elegant and weirdly perfect. And for whatever reason, she seems to know so much more than Kara does. There’s a gap between them and even though they’re strangers, even though they don’t have to be friends (Kara isn’t even sure if she wants to be friends) Kara hates it. She hates how isolating it feels.
So she does her hair in two braids, and puts on her favorite jeans with the black long-sleeved v-neck that reminds her of Rory Gilmore. It isn’t much but it feels good– feels like she’ll surpass whatever expectation Lena has of her.
When Kara finds the entrance, Lena is already there waiting for her. She’s standing under the big iron archway, carrying her backpack and the trash grabbers she’s borrowed from the school.
Kara smiles and waves over at her.
“Hey!”
Lena gives a slight smile in return and nods in acknowledgment.
“You look nice,” she says. She hands a trash pick to Kara who mentally pumps her fist and kicks a leg with excitement.
“Thank you.” Kara smiles. “So do you.”
Everything after that feels easy.
They pick up trash in relative silence. Lena stays in the grassy section while Kara cleans the pathway. It’s quiet and simple until it isn’t.
“Lena Luthor?”
Lena lifts her head and Kara drops the trash bag she’s been holding. Standing a few feet away are two girls around their age. One wears a Spence School Phys ED t-shirt. Lena must know them, Kara figures.
“How nice of you to help your brother with his community service,” says the one not wearing the Spence shirt. She has a high ponytail and blue Converse sneakers. She reminds Kara of the girls in Bring it On.
“But I don’t think it’s gonna make a real difference, didn’t he get like… what, twenty-five years?” she adds. Her friend– Spence shirt, laughs.
A crinkle forms between Kara’s eyes and she waits for Lena to react. She’s seen fights like this go down at her own school– groups of bullies ganging up on lower-classmen in the girl’s bathroom or staircase. They always seem to have the upper hand until they push too far.
But Lena doesn’t do anything. Her face doesn’t change. She just looks straight past them, the same way she does when she speaks to Kara, and says nothing.
“Hey, be careful with her,” Spence shirt jokes. “She might snap like he did.”
Lena looks down. Her face is red. She grips her trash pick so tight her palms grow sweaty and knuckles turn white, but still, she’s silent.
So Kara says something.
She can’t help it– she knows she shouldn’t. But the words slip out, and before she knows it, she’s asking-
“What are you talking about?”
Converse sneakers looks at her like she’s crazy.
“Lex Luthor,” she says, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “Ya know– that psycho who’s obsessed with Superman and killed all those people?”
Kara nods.
“That’s her brother.”
Kara swallows.
It feels like being punched in the gut– knocks the wind right out of her.
And suddenly, she’s back in the living room, watching the TV with the volume off at three in the morning because she couldn’t miss the live reports on her cousin’s condition. Because she needed to know if he was dead or alive. Because she couldn’t cope with losing one more person, and if he died, that meant she had to go to.
She’s in her closet the night after the attack after hearing a crash in the backyard. It’s raining out. Pouring, thunderous flurries. Eliza said the noise was just branches hitting the window in the storm. But Kara couldn’t believe her. She couldn’t get his face out of her head, trailing the worry that now, he was after her too.
By the time she finds herself back in reality, the girls are gone and Lena is still looking at her shoes.
“You can go home,” she says through a forced, wavering smile. “I’ll finish cleaning and write the report. You’ll still get the extra credit.”
This time, it’s Kara’s turn to go quiet.
This stranger, this girl who she found so pretty and alluring, who she dressed up for, who she emailed with for weeks, is the sister of the very person who wants all of her kind dead. Maybe they don’t have a friendship, but to be acquaintances is still too much. To know her at all is to feel every ounce of hurt and damage her family has inflicted.
Kara isn’t aware of how tight her jaw has been clenched until she starts to taste blood spouting from the sides of her cheeks.
She isn't going to put up with this. She isn't going to be around her.
So she does as Lena says-- drops her trash bag, and walks away.

The ending chapter and the first one of a new life
part 1 part 2 part 3 part 4 part 5
You did it, you defeated the aliens, you got rid of the bomb, you played your role of the Knight of Krypton. You protected everyone, you did your job and now its over. That was not expected, you reached the top, did everything everyone was expecting and more, you had it all and now it is over. After the battle and everything that happened with the aliens you celebrated with your family, you rested and then, you moved on. Wow that was unexpected, you were sure that fight was going to be your awakening just like Kara had with the plane. But it wasn't, the urge, the need, the purpose you felt those days to save your family to play your role, they had all disappeared. That feeling was gone, like if you had completed everything you were meant to do even if for you it felt like the beginning not the end.
One evening, after a long day of school and training, cause even if two weeks ago you were the hero you were still a teenager who had to finish her last year of highschool, you got home. You were tired and hungry and ready to take a shower, but instead of going quickly to your room you stayed there. On the front door,  it was today, it had to be.
For the last two weeks Kara had been offering you to join her whenever a situation came up and you were grateful about it. It was hard for her to assume that you were no longer a kid. But you somehow still wanted to be one, or at least while you could. After a lot of over thinking you got to the conclusion, you don't want to quit everything to be the next superhero, you just want to have that door open for when you are ready. You want to be able to do so and to protect your loved ones, but you also want to keep your life. So you've been making excuses to not go with your mother, but it was time to tell the truth.
‘Hey Y/N, how was your day?´said Kara while opening the oven. (Since she and Lena got together she's been trying to surprise her with a cake made by herself but she always ended up burning it) ‘Do you think it's edible?’ she asked trying to be positive
‘It does not look like it’
‘Is everything okay? You seem a bit off’ She asked, she probably heard your heartbeat, which was going faster by the second
‘Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something, I-’
Before you could continue Lena walked through the door, if she was a cartoon you would be able to see the smoke coming out of her ears.
‘I swear this job is gonna end me some day," she said while throwing her purse and coat to a chair. That only meant one thing, she had a really intense day, or else she would hang them up perfectly and make you do the same with your stuff.
Kara then threw the ‘cake’ she had ‘cooked’ and by just seeing that Lena smiled, even if she never got to taste one because they all ended up burnt, just the gesture was enough to make her heart melt. After it she went towards Lena who had grabbed a bottle of wine and was about to serve herself when Kara from behind grabbed the bottle and kissed her cheek. Lena looked at her raising her eyebrows,
‘Save it for dinner love’ Kara said, kissing her face once more, Lena then laughed and kissed her softly.
You were on the other side of the kitchen watching them. You used to think seeing them kiss was gross, and you still do sometimes, but you have to admit, they are so in love it's awfully cute. While they were in their own world you picked your things and gave them some space.
You took the long awaited shower and once you were in comfortable clothes you went back only to find your moms still acting like lovebirds while setting the table. You knew that all that had happened had affected them both and as a couple it was a hard time as well so it was nice to see them going back to their fluffy selves around each other.
During dinner Lena complained for 15 minutes about everything that had bothered her and Kara talked about this new story she was researching, you thought she had forgotten the conversation you both had until.
‘So Y/N what was it you wanted to talk to me about?’
‘Well, I have been thinking and I don’t think I want to be a hero, at least not for now’ you said, going straight to the point. Kara stopped eating and Lena looked at you encouraging you to continue.
‘I know I gave you a hard time because I wanted to fight and to fulfill my role as the Knight of Krypton, but I don't think I want to do it on a daily basis or at least not publicly’
‘Okay’ Lena simply said. Kara didn’t say anything and was still looking at you.
‘It’s just that when the invasion happened and we all were in danger it’s like if the knight took control of me and I felt this need to fight, but it was as if I didn’t have any control over it really and I don’t want that part of me to take control of the rest of me. I know I have to deal with it and figure a lot out and that it is a part of me I can't deny I just I don't want to be out to the world yet, I’m not ready’
You looked at Kara expecting a response, a tear slipped down her face, she got up and embraced you in her arms.
‘I am so proud of you’
‘Really?’
‘For a long time I kept forcing myself to be Supergirl for the world while I was struggling with it and I didn’t understand much, but you little one, you are aware enough to put yourself first. I’m so proud of you, and we will help you as much as we can to help you digest this new side of yourself’
That same night Lena knocked on your door. She entered and sat on your bed, patting it so you would sit next to her. Without saying anything she placed her head on your shoulder.
‘I know there is not much I can do to help you right now, I’m not kryptonian and I know your mom gets this stuff better than I do cause she went through it as well’
You caressed her hair. ‘That’s not true’
‘It is I can’t really add anything right now, but I want you to know that I’m here and that I wanna listen to you and I want to be here for you. So please don’t shut down. I know you have been having a hard tine for a couple of weeks and I dont want you to hide it. Believe me keeping this kind of things to yourself is not always the right thing’
‘How did you know?’
‘I may not be kryptonian, but I am your mom’
‘I love you’
‘I love you too, now go to bed, you have class tomorrow’ and with that she kissed your hair and got up to leave you to sleep.
‘Can I go out tomorrow by the way?’ Before you could explain the situation your mom raised her eyebrows. ‘I'm still grounded right?’
‘Yes you are, and tomorrow we actually have something planned so don’t take too long to get home’’
‘Yes ma’am’ you said, making her chuckle.
Once in her room Lena laid on her bed, staring at the ceiling and took a deep breath. This past weeks everything had change, she looked at her phone, there were no new messages, or at least not from Lori, who had left again for college. They sadly didn't end on the best terms, the working with Lex situation had messed Lena up more than she thought and she was now terrified Lori would talk to him again. Right when she was about to call again Kara opened the bathroom door connected to their bedroom.
‘Are you sure you’re only overwhelmed because of work?’ she asked Lena, already knowing the answer.
‘ She hasn’t replied to any of my texts, did she text you?’ Lena said, throwing her phone away and sitting up in the bed.
Kara sat behind her and held her.
‘She hasn’t, but you know how she is, she probably needs space to process everything’
‘So you are not worried about it?’
‘Oh no, I’m terrified, I’ve checked her heartbeat at least four times today’
Lena chuckled softly letting Kara’s arms embrace her.
‘Do you remember when she was just a little girl, she wouldn’t leave our side’ Lena said out of the blue
‘Yeah she slept in this bed every night no matter how hard we tried to get her to sleep in hers, in the morning she was always here’ Kara replied. ‘I used to know everything about her’
A text popped up on Lena’s phone screen. She was going to ignore it when Kara grabbed it, letting go of her wife.
‘Lee, it’s her’
Lena turned and took the phone from Kara’s hands.
I know I messed up, I’m sorry I couldn’t explain it at the moment, but it is all solved now. Love you
They both looked at each other, something was off. Lori sometimes needed time on her own to process everything, she would sit aside and clear her mind before opening up about anything, but when she did it was a full developed description of her feelings, something they were both very proud of since once she cleared her mind she was not afraid to speak and stand up for herself. So, it was easy to say that this was not common.
‘I could make a quick flight. See if she is really okay’ Kara suggested.
‘Where are you going?’ Kara asked as Lena started changing out of her pijamas
‘Look I may not know much about Krypton and what Y/N is going through, but I do know Lex. So I’m going to figure out where he is and what he is doing’. She went to grab her phone when Kara’s hand grabbed hers.
‘Kara please I need to so something’
Kara didn’t let go.
‘I know, but don’t let this take control of you. It’s 3 am and as much as we want to burst in there  and take her home it is not gonna work.’
‘Can you hear her heartbeat?’
‘She is sleeping’
Kara then got up and started to take Lena’s clothes off and dressed her up in her pjs again. They laid in their bed, holding each other, unaware of how everything was about to change for them in a few hours, but that would be a fight for another day. In that moment all that mattered to them was each other.

I'm back, sorry for the long wait, also, if you are interested in stories about supercorp before having their kids, let me know cause I've been thinking on publishing about it but idk if anyone cares lol.

God. modern Au Usopp would win cosplay competitions for judges choice / most creative because he makes Darkwing Ducks weapons from scratch and puts his entire theatre kid soul into it. Kid Usopp would have woken up at six on a school day to catch reruns of DD and adult Usopp was ECSTATIC when the Ducktales reboot was announced and he heard Darkwing would be in it. I can most definetly see your vision here. Probably likes the new version a bit more but loves that original Darkwing is just such an attention hog while still being a caring person deep down.
Usopp and Sanji start to get closer and one of the hardest things Usopp has to do is let him into his flat were he has just an entire corner dedicated to nerd stuff, several series actually but among other things cells from the original series he spent way more money on that would seem reasonable and autographs and vhs tapes still in their packaging. „Uhh. Yeah it’s- hahh- listen this show is hugely sentimental to me and I love the new one and yea…. You probably think that’s super weird?“ and Sanji just blinks and fumbles and digs around in his bag „No! Nono it’s okay! And pulls out an old, damaged keychain of a figure that probably used to be Card Captor Sakura before all the paint started to chip off. „This is one of my most prized possessions! I admired her so much as a kid!“ And Usopp reconsiders his stances on „faithed love“ and „soulmates“ because obviously god must have made Sanji this perfect on purpose and put him on earth just for Usopp to fall on love with.
I know we don't know each other but I would marry you right now if I could because this is honestly quite exactly what I was thinking about??????????????? Please??????? I- i am having the biggest Ducktales brainrot right now and there you go, adding Usopp and Sanuso sprinkles to it and I am going insane. Thank you.
Usopp would fucking love Darkwing Duck and he would absolutely love Ducktales 2017. I think he'd prefer the new version just a little bit more because it has a bit more depth and he'd relate to Drake Mallard an insane amount. A loser who found comfort in a TV Show (the same as him!!) and then chose to be an actor to bring that happiness to other kids, but then ended up being the hero he had always dreamed of being?? He's overly confident when he wears the suit but there's always something within him telling him that he's not good enough and that he has to keep trying harder. But Launchpad and Gosalyn believe in him!!! And idk, I think Usopp would absolutely love it. It would give him the confidence to be himself and also go back to cosplaying (and also making his own OC! Sogeking!). This is just- The sweetest thing on earth.
And then he meets Sanji and he doesn't tell him about his obsession with Ducktales and Darkwing Duck because it's childish and people always call him a kid for liking these things (personal experience. I fucking hate being 19 and having to hide that one of my fav shows is Ducktales). But he really does want to get to know Sanji better, and the cook keeps insisting on going to his apartment in their early stages of dating (or y'know, starting to know each other with romantic intentions. Pining. Whatever). And then he shows him his room and he has the place full of merchandising (my dream, honestly. Somebody get me a Darkwing Duck figurine for Christmas). And,,, It's exactly what you said,,, They make me so happy,,
Sanji tells him he's a fan of Card Captor Sakura (WHICH BY THE WAY IS ONE OF MY FAV ANIMES OF ALL TIME AND I THINK SANJI WOULD LOVE IT) and they just- Instant love. They start infodumping to each other so hard their faces hurt from smiling so damn much.
I think they'd have cute little dates in which they watch Ducktales and Card Captor Sakura together (Sanji absolutely loves Lena by the end of the show. Something something relating to her story. And I think Usopp loves Kero because silly little guy that's actually the coolest).

7:12am - Charlotte
I’m greeted by the scent of baked goods as soon as I enter the kitchen. Emmett must be warming up some of the muffins that his mum gave him yesterday. Everyone’s favorite. The kids will be happy. Maybe Georgia will cheer up.
I don’t know what could be bothering her, she’s been up for less than an hour. She went to bed fairly quickly after we got home last night. I wasn’t able to talk to her about what happened with Nadia’s mum. I know it’s probably not ideal to talk about it before bed or before school, but I don’t have a lot options. It can wait. I’ll figure it out today. There are more important things to deal with at the moment.
“Hey.” My husband approaches from behind, slightly grazing my back with his hand as he passes me. “The twins are on their way down.”
“Okay,” I reply.
He opens the oven and checks on breakfast. “You think they’re warm?” he asks, putting on a bright red oven mitt.
“I’m not sure, how long did you have them in there?”
“No idea.” He takes the cookie sheet out of the oven and slides it onto the granite. “Only one way to find out.”
Before I can say anything, he takes one of the muffins and stuffs it into his mouth. He doesn’t bother to remove the paper, he never does. He eats the top of the muffin first and then unwraps it. He gives me a thumbs up and takes another bite. “Want some?” I can barely understand him.
I shake my head. “I’ll get my own,” I say. I’ll let the kids pick whichever one they want first. The twins especially are particular about their baked goods.
Emmett finishes his muffin and throws the wrapper away. He must’ve done that in three bites. Lena’s baked goods always go quickly. Emmett has tried to mimic her recipes, he can never get them quite right. He arranges the muffins on a cutting board and puts the cookie sheet in the sink.
“How are you feeling this morning?” I was up sick all last night, Emmett was taking care of me. I think we were finally able to go to bed around one.
“Better.” Thank god. I can’t wait to be done with this. I’m already exhausted. I’m worried it’s only going to get worse.
“How’d it go with Peach?” he asks.
“It didn’t.” I hand him his coffee, he trades me for my tea. I don’t know when we started making each other’s drinks in the morning, but now it’s part of our routine. Emmett always takes his coffee the same way: a little bit of milk and no sugar. I don’t add anything to my tea.
“Why not?” He raises his eyebrow.
“She’s upset over something.”
“Upset over what?”
“I’m not sure. She kicked me out when I tried to ask.” I frown. It’s not like her not to tell me. It’s especially not like her to kick me out.
Our conversation is interrupted by stomping down the stairs. “Hey, no pushing!” That’s Lucy. If I had to guess, the twins are probably racing each other.
“I win!” Liam boasts. He usually does.
“Yeah, because you cheated.”
“No I didn’t, you’re just slow,” he laughs.
“What have we told you two about racing down the stairs?” Emmett calls out.
“Sorry, Dad, we forgot!” Lucy skips into the kitchen, followed by her brother. She notices the muffins on the counter and grins. “Are these Nana’s muffins?”
Emmett crosses his arms. “They are. You can have one if you promise to stop racing down the stairs.”
“Okay! I promise!” She stares at the muffins, looking at each one carefully. “I call this one!” She points to the one with the largest berries on it. “Mom, will you braid my hair?”
“After we eat.” I smile at her. Doing Lucy’s hair is one of my favorite parts about the morning.
“I want this one,” Liam says quietly, gesturing to the largest muffin on the board.
“Let’s wait for Georgia and then we’ll eat, okay?” The twins nod their heads in agreement.
“Hey, Lulu, where’d you get that shirt?” Emmett asks. Metallica. That’s not something I would buy.
Lucy looks down at her shirt and shrugs. “I don’t know, it was in my closet.” Did I do that? Probably. I still have no idea where it came from.
“It’s Izzy’s. All of his shirts look like that,” Liam answers. Okay, that makes sense. Between the two of them, there’s probably a week’s worth of clothes between our house and the Kerrigan's.
Emmett and Liam start talking about his tryouts. He has them again today and for the next two days. We’re all hoping he makes it onto a competitive club team. I just hope the practices aren’t too long if he does make it. They got home last night at the same time the girls and I did. 9:30. Liam fell asleep in the car, Emmett had to carry him in.
The four of us don’t hear Georgia come down the stairs. She silently enters the kitchen and goes straight for the fridge. She’s looking for something, most likely her favorite juice. I’m fairly certain she finished it yesterday. She slams the fridge shut, obviously frustrated. The conversation about tryouts is on hold. Emmett and I make eye contact. The twins are staring at their sister.
Emmett breaks the silence, “Morning, Peach.” She glances at him, not saying anything.
“Someone’s in a bad mood,” Lucy says. Not this morning, please.
Georgia ignores her as well, now looking for something in the pantry. She sighs, closing the door softly this time.
“What are you looking for?” Emmett asks.
“Breakfast.” She scratches the side of her head.
“You don’t want a muffin?”
“No.”
“Wow, you must be in a really bad mood to not want Nana’s muffins,” Lucy teases.
“Hey, Lulu, knock it off,” Emmett says.
“I’m not doing anything!”
“Shut up, Lucy.” Georgia glares at her younger sister.
“Make me.” Lucy smirks. She knows exactly what she’s doing.
“Lucy, seriously, enough,” I say firmly. Before she can contest, I turn to Georgia. “Georgia, you’re allowed to be in a bad mood, but that doesn’t mean you get to take it out on everyone, okay?” Something must really be bothering her. Maybe she’ll talk about it on the ride to school.
“Oh, right, I can’t. But you can.” She rolls her eyes. Is this about the other day? It has to be.
“No. It’s not okay for me to do either,” I respond. I don’t know what else to say. I have to wonder if she’s upset at something or upset at me. Or both. It’s been weird between us since I lost my temper with her. Not bad, but not normal. I thought we were at least okay. I guess not.
“Whatever.” She takes a pear out of the bowl on the counter and leaves the kitchen. That won’t be enough, I’ll make her something and offer it to her in the car. I sigh, it’ll probably be a silent car ride this morning.
“Okay… Does this mean we can eat muffins now?” Lucy asks.
“Sure, go ahead,” Emmett responds. The twins both grab their breakfast and head to the table. I was hungry earlier, now I think I’ve lost my appetite. It’s going to be a long day.

something something organelles something chloroplasts…. sulfates…
*nodding along* yes talk science to me damn
It was so hard to write that chapter of Even Though You're Kryptonian, and try to figure out what the audience would need to know (assuming that most of the audience didn't have biology fresh on their minds). I ended up summing it to "okay, the audience needs to know that blood is important, and that the trait is maternally passed" and also "the audience needs to know this comes down to quantum information, which can't be cloned". When Nia says "skip the science", that is because I took out full paragraph explanations that were originally written there when I went back to editing 🤣 Buuuut this is tumblr, so I'll summarize here!
Quantum cloning is actually impossible (and would break the universe if it were possible), which Lena notes. On the TV show, they say they need Kara's DNA, and then get really sad when it's destroyed... but Lena is a scientist, replicating DNA is super easy, she definitely would've done that before loading the device!! So in my fic, we're going with quantum signatures, because the sadness around needing to reset the device to fight the phantoms makes sense.
The stable marriage problem (also called the "stable matching problem") is an actual thing in algorithms, with applications in economics. It's not specific to marriage - you can use similar algorithms to optimize which schools students attend, for instance. And it's always solvable, given certain conditions, with one of those conditions being that the two groups are distinct (like colleges are group 1, students are group 2 - a college can't attend a college & a student can't attend a student). If you don't have distinct groups, it turns into the stable roommate problem, which is not guaranteed to be solvable.
So basically my headcanon is that Krypton would look at algorithms and say "We can't have gay marriage, that's not algorithmically efficient!" because Krypton is the type of screwed up society that thinks everything should be done by algorithm.
Chloroplasts are organelles in plants. (Organelles are just organs for cells - instead of hearts and livers and kidneys, cells have things like mitochondria and nuclei and endoplasmic reticula.) Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell? Well, so are chloroplasts (in plants!).
Lena at some point on the TV show tells the group that Reign's cells are more like plant cells, which Kara confirms as how kryptonians convert sunlight to energy (which is what a chloroplast does). But I say they're not quite chloroplasts because they have to use a different dye - kryptonians aren't green. Lutein is a yellow dye in plants (think fall leaves) that could probably be masked by the natural melanin in human skin. So that's what I made as the thing that causes kryptonians to give off a quantum signature - the conversion of sunlight to power.
Organelles really are passed from the mother (egg) to the child. Sperm doesn't have room for much besides DNA. (Though for reasons not yet explained, kryptonian biology is going to work a little differently than Lena expects.)
As for sulfates, that's just a category of salt, and they're plentiful in the ocean. I needed something that killed libido... unfortunately, most of the real stuff that would kill libido are things like alcohol or opioids, and I didn't want kryptonian kids running around stoned all the time. But salt can contribute to high blood pressure, which can lower libido - sooooo let's just pretend that kryptonians are particularly likely to experience this side effect, while not being killed by blood pressure. Their biology is different anyway!

Lillian walked into the dining room while carrying the main dish for tonight’s dinner: roasted chicken. She was surprised to see Lena walking around the dining room table like a mad woman adjusting silverware and chairs while Sam and Ruby watched over to the side shaking their heads.
Lillian stopped near Sam and Ruby and said softly, “How long has she been like this?”
Sam said, “She has been like this for about an hour now. Ruby and I offered to help, but Lena swatted our hands away from the table.”
Ruby pouted and said, “She said that everything has to be set right on the table. I’ve helped set the table before.” Ruby turned to her grandmother and said, “I thought you told me I was a good helper with the table last time.”
Lillian smiled while kissing Ruby on the forehead.
“You’re a wonderful helper.”
Ruby looked at Lena pouting and asked, “Then why doesn’t Auntie Lena let me help set the table?”
Lillian stared at Lena for a second fusing over the silverware on the table.
Lillian turned back to Ruby, smiled and said, “Sometimes, people get a little carried away when they are trying to impress someone that they are in love with.”
Ruby looked over at Lena curiously and asked, “Falling in love does that to you?”
Sam chuckled and said, “Sometimes it does.”
Ruby muttered, “Well, I hope that love never does this to me.”
Sam chuckled.
Lillian smirked and said, “I don’t know why you are laughing. You should know better than anyone that love can make us do crazy things. I remember a certain someone having us sit through them trying on thirty outfits before their first date with Lucas Johnson during their senior year of high school.”
Ruby looked up at her mom curiously and asked, “Why did you do all of that?”
Lillian chuckled and said, “She wanted to have the perfect outfit. Even though the majority of the stuff she showed us was a variation of the same look.”
Sam groaned and said, “I thought we agreed to never speak of that again especially after Lucas turned out being such a prick.”
Lillian kissed Sam on the forehead and said, “I am just trying to let Ruby know it is normal to have feelings like this is all.”
Sam pouted and said, “At my expense.”
Lillian smirked and said, “Well, think of it this way, you will have a chance to do the same thing when Ruby has a son or a daughter.”
Sam sighed and said, “I don’t even want to think that far now. Ruby is still my sweet little baby.”
Ruby groaned and said, “I’m not a baby anymore.”
Sam smiled and kissed Ruby’s forehead and said, “You will always be my baby.”
Ruby rolled her eyes. Lillian cackled as she placed the chicken on the table. She then went over to Lena who was still fidgeting with the silverware.
Lillian placed a hand on Lena’s shoulder and said, “You know that we got everything covered. The food is ready and the table is set.”
Lena looked at her pouting and said, “Everything needs to be perfect tonight. There is so much left to do and to add to that, Kara is bringing an extra person.”
Lillian chuckled and pulled Lena in for a hug and said, “You worry too much. We were aware of the extra person coming tonight so there is enough food for everyone. The only thing that is left to do is to place all the food on the table.”
Lena looked at the table and said, “Maybe, I could turn that fork just a little to the left.”
As Lena went down to reach for the fork, Lillian grabbed her hand and started to pull Lena away from the table to the living room.
“Hey!” said Lena said loudly.
Lillian guided them over to the coach and pulled them down.
She turned to Lena with a soft smile and said, “You need to calm down.”
Lena looked at Lillian dumbfounded and exclaimed, “Calm down!”  Lena said louder, “Calm down! How can you say that to me? I am meeting her family for the first time. Her only blood relative absolutely hates me with a passion.”
Lena looked down while wringing her hands tighter and asked, “What if the others hate me too?”
Lillian pulled Lena in for a hug and Lena leaned into the embrace. Lillian rubbed soothing circles on Lena’s back.
“I think this has to do with one person in particular.”
Lena sniffed and asked, “Why do you say that?”

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 195: This is Halloween
The next day, as Ren was heading to school, there was a message in the Phantom Thieves group chat. She checked it.
Yusuke: Pardon me. I know today is Hallowen, but does anyone have time to meet after school?
Yusuke: I have a lot on my mind, and I want to discuss it with people.
Haru: Unfortunately, I have to decline.
Haru: There’s an important meeting at Okumura Foods, and I'd like to be a part of it.
Makoto: I can’t make it either.
Makoto: I’m helping someone today.
Futaba: And in case you forgot, I’m busy looking through our notes and contacting Riko and Akechi.
Lena: Oh, be sure to contact Goro first.
Lena: He and I have a date tonight.
Ryuji: Oh, nice!
Ryuji: As it so happens, Ann and I also have a date.
Ann: Yeah, but I’m sure we can help you Yusuke.
Ann: So long as it doesn’t take too long.
Sumire: I can be there too!
Ren: Same.
Ren: And I think if we meet at Leblanc, Morgana can also make it.
Yusuke: Personally, I’d like to meet there as well.
Jose: I’d like to come too, but I promised the theater club something.
Yusuke: Will I see you at the Kosei Halloween party at least?
Jose: Yeah…
Yusuke: I guess I’ll talk to you then.
Jose: Sure.
Lena: I can make it too if we can do it before mine and Goro’s date.
Lena: In case that wasn’t clear.
Yusuke: Alright then.
Yusuke: See you after school.
Ren: See you then!
Ren put her phone away, and continued towards school.
Meanwhile, Futaba was looking through stuff, when she decided to hack back into Akechi’s phone.
???: Greeting Detective Akechi!
???: This is Phantom Thief Alibaba.
Goro: Huh.
Goro: I thought she’d have told you by now.
???: Who are you talking about?
Goro: I gave one of your associates a list of people who I suspect to be Phantom Thieves, and you for sure were on it.
???: Well, maybe you just don’t know my associates then.
???: Because I’ve never heard of this list.
Akechi was frustrated, but didn’t feel like pushing this point at the moment.
Goro: Well, in any case, how goes things on your end?
???: We ran into a few complications.
???: But we shall overcome.
Goro: Do you need my help?
???: Perhaps.
Goro: How may I be of assistance?
???: We need to ratchet up the pressure on the director.
???: He’s planning something, and we need to figure out how to undermine him.
Goro: That seems tricky.
Goro: But I may have a solution.
???: Go on.
Goro: I’ve been tracking down his associates, but none of them have been all too helpful.
Goro: So maybe we should just play into his sense of superiority. We make it look like we aren’t accomplishing anything, and then surprise him when you accomplish your next goal.
???: That…actually works with what we’ve been planning.
Goro: May I ask what that is?
???: Do you still want to arrest us after all this is said and done?
Goro: I see your point.
???: It’s not that we don’t want to work with you further…
Goro: I understand.
Goro: To be honest, I have my own goals that letting you in would complicate.
???: I can imagine.
Goro: Still, I like this balance we are striking.
Goro: Perhaps in another time, another place, we could be good friends.
???: Perhaps.
Goro: Well, good luck on your mission.
???: You too!
Futaba cut off contact with Akechi.
“Hm,” Akechi grinned. “I don’t think I was given wrong information on who ‘Alibaba’ was. Still, I can’t let them know that entirely. I do hope that the director can remain more composed than to let it slip when his back is suddenly against the wall. It’s a bit of a risk, but it’s the easiest way to keep The Phantom Thieves off his trail. Sorry Phantom Thieves, but he’s mine!” Akechi got another message, this time from Lena.
Lena: Hey Goro!
Lena: I’m helping a friend after school, but don’t worry.
Lena: I should be back around 5:30-ish, and I have our costumes ready, so you can just come over.
Goro: Can’t wait! See you then!
Akechi put his phone away and continued onward.
Meanwhile, Futaba sighed, relieved. “I can’t believe he bought that.” She then went back to looking through the various notes Riko had given her.
Afterschool, Yusuke, Ren, Morgana, Sumire, Ann, Ryuji, and Lena met up at Leblanc. “Soooo, what’s this about?” Ryuji asked.
Yusuke hesitated. “...I…know it was the right thing to leave Madarame…but ever since then, I’ve felt torn. When I was living with Madarame, I could think of art purely. But now, I’m being confronted with the reality that if I were to survive in the art world, no, in the world in general, I need to think about other things than art. I have to use my art to survive. In that way, I don’t think I can purely see art ever again. It’s all just a means to an end.”
He looked over at the Sayuri hanging up. “The reason I wanted to come here was to take another look. I have often felt inspired by Sayuri. And knowing its true nature, it’s only more beautiful.” He sighed. “But alas, my mind is so cluttered with the poisonous trappings of everyday life that I don’t think I can create something even half as good.” He looked back at everyone. “So, what do I do?”
Everyone looked at Yusuke. “Um, no offense,” Ryuji said, “but can’t you focus on both?” Yusuke seemed intrigued. “I mean, I started running because I liked it. And I thought if I could be successful enough in track, I could help my mom. So I just kept doing what I loved.”
“Yeah,” Ann said. “Doing what you love is wonderful! I admit that we don’t live in an ideal world, and we do need to focus on how to survive, but if you can do it by doing something you love, then there’s no worry, right?”
“I’m not sure that’s entirely helpful,” Morgana said, “but I get the sentiment. It’s like ‘you’re already doing it, might as well go all in.’ And if a Phantom Thief can’t go all in, well…”
“Huh,” Yusuke said. “I understand.”
“I get that it’s not easy,” Sumire said. “And believe me, even with all the help in the world, there will still be road bumps. But if you are determined to strive forward with your dream, then instead of thinking of the road bumps in a completely negative light, think of how you can use them to your advantage.”
“Yeah,” Lena added. “I mean, I left my home to pursue my dreams. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m still trying. And I’m glad you asked us. Being able to reach out is hard, but I know it’s worth it in the end.”
“Everyone…” Yusuke said.
Ren smirked. “Remember: Kosuke told you to be the best damn artist you could be, right? I bet you’d hate to disappoint him. Or us, for that matter.”
Yusuke started to remember Kosuke’s words after they defeated him. He smirked as well. “Yes. And he told me something else. He said I ‘always had eyes on the bigger picture.’ I guess I just lost sight of it once everything changed. I thought I had to change with it, I suppose I still do, but I think I need to change in a way that suits me, you know?”
“Yeah!” Ryuji said. “Being yourself is what a Phantom Thief is all about!”
“I agree!” Morgana said.
“Hey!” Ann said. “Look at you two getting along!”
“Huh?!” Ryuji and Morgana gasped.
“I mean…We just agree here,” Ryuji said.
“Yeah,” Morgana protested. “It’s not like we’re close or anything.”
“Oh, I doubt that,” Sumire said. “After everything we’ve been through, there’s nothing that can tear us apart. And that includes you two.”
“Well…” Ryuji tried to follow up.
“Hm hm,” Lena giggled. “Even if you butt heads from time to time, you’re still good friends in the end, right?”
“Mreeeee…” Morgana groaned, not wanting to admit it, but being unable to lie.
Yusuke chuckled. He took out a sketchbook and started sketching. He soon presented it to everyone. “Behold!” It was a sketch of Ryuji and Morgana being angry with each other, but in the background was them admiring each other. “I call it ‘Tempest Friendship’.”
“What?!” Morgana shrieked.
“You’re…not going to make that into a full painting, are you?” Ryuji asked.
“I might,” Yusuke said. “But I have a lot of other paintings in mind. But this one is nice.”
“I like it,” Ren said. “It’s a commemoration of you getting out of your slump.”
“Yes,” Yusuke said. “But I still need something more. This is nice, but I want my first full piece to be GLORIOUS!”
“I understand the feeling,” Sumire said. “Once you overcome an obstacle, you want to show the world just what you’re capable of.”
“Yeah!” Lena added. “I know you can do it. You can set the art world on FIRE!”
Yusuke chuckled. “Thank you, everyone. I don’t know where I would be without you.”
“The feeling is mutual,” Ren said.
Emperor-Yusuke Kitagawa: Rank 8
Lena stood up. “Well, I should get going. I need to meet up with Goro to go on our date.” She opened the door. “Bye!”
“We should get going too,” Ann said. “We gotta make sure your costume fits!”
“Co-Costume?” Ryuji said. “I thought we were just hanging out.”
“On Halloween?!” Ann said. “No way! We’re here to have FUN!” She grabbed Ryuji’s arm. “Let’s go!”
“Ah!” Ryuji said, jolting up. “Alright then. Let’s see what you got!” The two of them left.
“I should get going too,” Yusuke said. “I missed last year’s Kosei Halloween Party due to Madarame. I don’t want to miss any more.”
“Take care!” Ren said. She and Yusuke waved at each other as he left. Once he was gone, Ren looked at Sumire. “I’m sorry I didn’t plan anything.”
“Huh?!” Sumire said. “Oh, uh, no, it’s quite alright. Well, I mean…” She sighed. “This is my first Halloween without Kasumi. We always used to do adorable twin costumes. I really liked doing that. I guess I’m not ready to do something big yet…”
Ren grabbed Sumire’s hand. “It’s OK. Just go at your own pace.”
Sumire smiled. “I guess doing a little something with you would be nice.”
Ren chuckled. “I think I know just the thing.” Ren glanced at Morgana. “Are you OK on your own?”
“Please,” Morgana said. “A black cat on Halloween? I couldn’t be more at home. I bet I can find something JUICY!”
Ren nodded. “Just be safe OK? And get back home at a reasonable time.”
“Right!” Morgana said. With that, the three of them left. Morgana headed off in his own direction, while Ren was leading Sumire somewhere.
Meanwhile, Makoto and Eiko arrived at Eiko’s house. “I’m home!” Eiko called out. No response.
“Is no one home?” Makoto wondered.
“No, my mom and brother are home,” Eiko said, pointing at the shoes.
“Oh. Right,” Makoto said. “Sorry…”
“It’s OK,” Eiko said. “You’re the one rescuing me from this after all.”
Makoto smiled. “Right.” They took off their shoes and headed in.
Sure enough, Eiko’s mom and brother were there. Her brother was watching TV, while her mom was baking. “Hi,” Eiko said.
“Oh, Eiko honey,” Eiko’s mom said. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
Eiko glared at her, but kept her composure. “Um, this is my…friend Makoto,” she said, remaining civil. “The girl I told you about.”
“Hm?” Eiko’s mom said, looking over. “Oh that’s right. You said you were moving in with her.”
“That’s right,” Eiko said.
“Um, hello,” Makoto said, unsure of what to expect.
“Hm,” Eiko’s mom said. “Well thank you.” Makoto was surprised. “I’m glad Eiko found a friend like you.”
“Um…thanks…?” Makoto replied.
“I know she can be a handful,” Eiko’s mom said, “but I’m sure you’ll manage. From what I’ve heard, you’re quite capable.”
“Oh, she’s really no trouble at all,” Makoto protested.
“I know you’re trying to be polite,” Eiko’s mom responded, “but we both know that Eiko is…how you say, rambunctious. I mean, look at Asahi over there. He gets good grades. He’s popular at school. He’s the leader of the soccer team. You can tell he’s meant for great things. But Eiko? She bends and breaks so easily. She’s a follower by nature. She barely gets by, and is only friends with miscreants. Er, present company excluded, of course.”
“Of course,” Makoto repeated bitterly.
“But hey, maybe with you, she’ll turn her life around,” Eiko’s mom said.
“Well,” Makoto said firmly, “I think that’s the first thing you’ve said that I agree with.” Eiko’s mom looked at her intently. “But you’re completely wrong about Eiko. She’s smarter than you give her credit for. A lot braver and a lot kinder too. But I think she’s being stifled by your expectations. So that’s why she’ll be in my care from here on.” Eiko was stunned by Makoto’s fiery rebuttal.
Eiko’s mom glared at her. “It’s going to be like that, is it?”
“I’m afraid so,” Makoto replied.
Eiko’s mom went back to baking. “Well, whatever. It’s not like she’s going to be my problem for much longer.”
“The fact that you think of her as a ‘problem’ is very much the reason she’ll be gone soon,” Makoto said. “Though I doubt you ever really thought of her as ‘yours’.”
Eiko’s mom grew more bitter. “Did you just come here to argue with me?”
“As a matter of fact, I didn’t,” Makoto said. “This was just a fun bonus.” Eiko laughed, while Eiko’s mom groaned. “I came over to help Eiko pack a little, and then we’re going to catch a movie.”
“Hm,” Eiko’s mom said. “Well, if you leave before you can taste my Halloween cookies, there won’t be any when you get back.”
“We’ll probably grab dinner afterwards anyway,” Makoto said,
“Suit yourself,” Eiko’s mom said. “Like I care at this point.”
“It seems the feeling is mutual,” Makoto said. “Eiko?” Eiko nodded, and they headed over to her room.
On their way, Eiko whispered “Don’t worry. Mom’s cookies suck anyways.”
“And she calls you imperfect,” Makoto whispered back. They shared a giggle before entering Eiko’s room to pack up a little.
Meanwhile, Haru arrived at the boardroom. The members there were shocked, and one of them asked “Erm, Miss Okumura, um, what are you doing here?”
Haru answered with “I know I’m still a student, and I’ve not attended many of these, but now that everything has changed, I wish to take a bigger role in the company. I will start by attending these meetings whenever I can. Of course, I can’t make any policy decisions, but I wish to at least have a voice.”
“But Mis Okumura-”
“Let her stay,” an older gentleman said.
“Takakura!”
“What she said isn’t wrong,” Takakura continued. “Although I wish you didn’t have to worry too much about the company at this stage.”
“I don’t mind,” Haru said. “But as I’ve said before, I’ll inform you of my decision once I come to it. In the meantime, I wish to do whatever I can to help.”
“Very well,” Takakura said. There were some whispers around the table about Takakura’s disposition towards Haru, as well as her father. “Anwyas!” Takakura commanded. Everyone went silent. “If we’re all here, let’s begin.” Everyone nodded. “As you may know, things haven’t been going well since Mr. Okumura’s heart was stolen. But he is no longer a part of this company. We are the future of Okumura Foods, and we have to make sure we salvage this sinking ship. We’re doing all we can to make up for Mr. Okumura’s past transgressions, including that new order that came in just a few days ago, but-”
“Um,” Haru interjected. “What new order?”
Takakura looked at her. “We’ve been ordered to recall and shut down Starfall Coffee.”
“How come?” Haru asked.
“We’re not sure,” another executive said. “All we know is that we’ve been told that there’s a major issue with it.”
“By whom?” Haru wondered.
“The Special Investigations Unit,” another executive answered. “It was found as part of the investigation into your father.”
“Huh,” Haru said. I should tell the others that.
“Anyways!” Takaura said, steering the conversation back on task. “While everything we’re doing to correct the mistakes of the past, it’s imperative that we start thinking about the future of Okumura Foods.”
The future of Okumura Foods, huh… Haru pondered. What do I see for the future?
A little later, Akechi was checking his phone. He saw the news of the Starfall Coffee recall. “Hm. I suppose that was inevitable at this rate. I’m sure he’s already figured something else out by now.”
He arrived at Lena’s house. He knocked on the door. Lena answered. “Goro!” she cheered, leaping into his arms.
“Heh heh,” Goro chuckled. Lena looked up and the two shared a kiss. “I can’t wait to see what you’ve whipped up.”
“Oh right!” Lena said, letting go. “Follow me!” She led him inside. They went up to her room. Lena had two mannequins setup with homemade costumes.
Akechi looked at the masculine mannequin. He saw a formal outfit with a really hairy wig and tail coming off of it. “So, I’m a formal werewolf?”
Lena giggled. “No silly! It’s a couple’s costume. We’re going as Beauty and The Beast.” Lena presented her costume on the feminine mannequin, which was an adaptation of her persona.
“I see,” Akechi replied.
“It’s perfect!” Lena said. “I’ve always loved the story! BUT it works for you as well?”
“Does it?” Akechi wondered.
Lena nodded. “Now we can go out and about in public and nobody will know it’s you because you’re covered in hair.”
“I see,” Akechi said.
“ALSO!” Lena said. “I gave the chestpiece a little bit of padding so you don’t need to wear a binder. I know you shouldn’t wear that all the time.”
“Hm hm. You know, that was quite thoughtful of you,” Akechi said.
“Hm hm. Thanks,” Lena replied.
Akechi smiled. “Well, shall we get changed?”
“Oh!” Lena said, stunned. “Yes! Um, do you need help?”
“I think I can manage,” Akechi said.
“Great!” Lena said.
A few minutes later, both of them were changed and ready to head out. “You know, this costume fits me like a glove,” Akechi noted.
Lena giggled. “Well, you did tell me your measurements.”
“Right,” Akechi said. He offered his hand. “Well then, shall we?”
Lena curtsied. “Let’s. She took Akechi’s hand, and the two of them went off to celebrate.
As they left, Tamako looked on, smiled, sighed, and remarked “Tail as old as time.”
Meanwhile, at Ann’s house. Ryuji was in one of the restrooms. “Does it fit?” Ann called out from outside.
“I think so,” Ryuji said. “It’s a little lose, but I imagine that’s part of it.”
“Yeah,” Ann remarked. “Well come on, let me see!”
Ryuji walked out. He was wearing a slightly ill-fitting green tuxedo jacket and pants, with a maroon shirt underneath, a white bowtie with red polka dots, and a large green hat with a tag sticking out of it reading “In This Style 10/6”. “Hah, this was a GREAT idea!” Ryuji exclaimed. “And this costume is AMAZING!”
Ann giggled. “Thanks.” Ryuji looked at his girlfriend to see her wearing a blue dress with a white apron, black and white stripped stockings, and a black hairband over her head, which was all the way down, since she removed the pigtails. “What do you think of my costume?”
Ryuji smiled. “You look adorable.”
Ann giggled again. “Thanks. So, are you ready to paint the town red?”
“Absolutely!” Ryuji answered. “And I believe that we should party even harder than usual. Not only is it Halloween, but I believe it’s both of our unbirthdays.”
“You’re right,” Ann said. They took each other’s hands and went off to celebrate.
Morgana was walking around town. He saw people celebrating by dressing up and being a little more raucous than usual. Still, he didn’t mind. He loved it when people were having fun. Besides, he was on the prowl for information, and tonight seemed like a night where people were a little more loose-lipped .
Morgana was trekking around when he passed by a police station. He noticed they were throwing out their coffee maker. “Why are we doing this again?” one of the officer’s asked.
“Because,” another officer answered, “the SIU told us to.”
“‘SIU’?” Morgana wondered. “I should get closer.” He stealthed his way to the officers talking.
“I know,” the first officer said. “But it tastes so good!”
“I know Okumura’s Starfall Coffee is good,” the second officer said. “But it’s dangerous.”
“How come?”
The second officer looked around. “Don’t mention this to anyone, but I’ve heard that it’s one of the causes of those mental shutdowns we’ve been looking into.”
“WHAT?!” Morgana shrieked. He slipped from his perch and landed in front of the two officers. He was a little nervous.
The second officer sighed. “It’s just a cat.”
“Yeah,” the first officer said. “Imagine if that was a person. But still, that gives me chills. To think a cup of coffee could make someone go insane. Usually if I don’t get a cup of joe, I go insane.”
“Trust me, you’re plenty insane with or without coffee,” the second officer said.
“HEY!” the first officer shouted. They both went inside.
Morgana sighed, relieved. “I guess…this body has its uses.” He stood up and shook himself off. “I should go home and tell Futaba.” Morgana started heading back.
At Kosei, Yusuke emerged from his dorm room wearing his regular clothes, as well as a set of fake cat ears and cat tail. He moved out to where the party was being held.
Upon arrival, he got a few looks. “Hey, Kitagawa!” said one of the other students, who was wearing a succubus costume. “That’s…an interesting costume.”
“Forgive me,” Yusuke said. “I didn’t have enough money for a full costume.”
“No no, it’s great!” the other student said. “It’s so…you!”
“Why thank you,” Yusuke replied.
“Well, uh, help yourself to some punch,” the other student said. “Oh, and take some sweets too.”
“Hm. Don’t mind if I do,” Yusuke said. As he was getting his food and drink, he turned and asked “Oh, has Jose arrived yet?”
“Um, I don’t think so,” the other student said.
“He told me he was doing something with the theater department,” Yusuke clarified.
“Oh!’ the other student said. “Well, you’ll see him soon then.”
“Huh?” Yusuke wondered.
Suddenly, the front of the room lit up. “It’s starting!” the other student said.
“The Kosei Theater Club proudly presents: The Dance to Summon The Pumpkin Prince!” Yusuke’s attention was focused on the makeshift stage. In the middle of it was a big leaf. The various theater kids, dressed as all sorts of Halloween classics, began dancing around the leaf, attempting to summon The Pumpkin Prince.
Soon, two sides formed, and they began giving each other cues to act and react. Slowly but surely, the leaf started to blossom. Once it fully bloomed, there was a pumpkin in the middle of it. The pumpkin slowly got up, turned around, and revealed himself to be Jose in a pumpkin costume. “THE PUMPKIN PRINCE!” the other performers exclaimed. Jose smiled. There was a round of applause.
Later, Yusuke met up with Jose. “I must say, you did an excellent job.”
“Oh, you saw that, did you?” Jose said, embarrassed.
“Indeed,” Yusuke siad. “I feel inspired.”
“Eh heh,” Jose laughed. “Well, I didn’t do a whole lot. They just needed someone short, and I fit the bill.”
“Nonsense,” Yusuke said. “You were the star of the show.”
“Well…” Jose said.
“Don’t be so modest,” Hifumi said. Yusuke and Jose turned to look at her. She was wearing ancient Japanese regal attire. “You did wonderfully.”
“Thanks,” Jose said.
“Pardon me,” Yusuke said. “Are you supposed to be Queen Himiko?”
Hifumi giggled. “You’re the first person to guess correctly.”
“But it’s so obvious,” Yusuke said.
“Well, you look pretty either way,” Jose remarked.
Hifumi chuckled. “Thanks. You know, you look adorable yourself.”
“Eh heh,” Jose chuckled, blushing. “Oh right.” He looked up to Yusuke. “Do you still need help?”
“You need help?” Hifumi wondered.
“Well, I suppose I could tell you,” Yusuke said. “I’ve sorted things out, but more voices wouldn’t hurt.” He explained his earlier meeting to Jose and Hifumi.
“I see,” Jose said. “Well, to be honest, I think I’d mirror what they said. But I would add that doing something like this is a seeminglessly endless task, but doing so is its own reward.”
“If I may,” Hifumi added, “I think the issue you may be having is that, pardon my bluntness, you don’t really have any immediate family members. I know I’m doing shogi for my father, but…”
Yusuke grinned. “I see. While it is true that I don’t have any relatives, I do have friends, and they’re like a family to me. If I can do it for them, then there’s nothing I can’t do.”
“That’s the spirit!” Jose said.
Hifumi giggled. “I could really use courage like yours.”
“Oh right,” Yusuke said. “Do you-?”
“I’ll figure that out later,” Hifumi said. “Tonight, I just want to have fun. Shall we get more punch?”
“Of course,” Yusuke said. The three of them went off to enjoy the party.
Later, Makoto and Eiko arrived at the movie theater. Makoto sighed. “Sorry. I didn’t realize how bad it was at your place.”
Eiko chuckled. “It’s alright. Besides, I loved seeing you put my mom in her place.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to move tonight?” Makoto said. “Because we can skip the movie, and-”
Eiko shook her head. “It’s alright. I can wait until then.”
Makoto nodded. “Well, if you say so. So, what movie do you want to watch?” “Well, it’s Halloween, right?” Eiko said. “So something scary!”
“GAH!” Makoto shrieked. Eiko was confused. “Sorry. It’s just…I don’t take to horror too well.”
“Oh!’ Eiko said.
“But if you really want to-”
“Shhhhhhh,” Eiko said, calming her girlfriend down. “It’s OK. I can watch it on my own time. Tonight is about us!” Makoto nodded. “So, what do you want to watch? Maybe a Buchimaru-kun movie.”
“Well, one isn’t playing until December,” Makoto said. “And that’s a special event showing off the classic Christmas with Buchimaru-kun.”
“Woah,” Eiko siad. “I was joking.”
“Oh, uh…” Makoto said, embarrassed.
Eiko chuckled. “It’s fine. I think it’s really cute that you’re into it. Most people would feel like they’re too cool for it. But I still like it as well. Granted, it has been a bit…”
Makoto smiled. “Thanks.”
Eiko smiled back. “But, is it anything like that, or Buchimaru-kun specifically?”
“Well, I like similar shows,” Makoto said. “But Buchimaru-kun just resonates with me. Always has.”
“How come?” Eiko asked.
“I’m not entirely sure,” Makoto said. She noticed one of the posters. “Oh look! Like a Dragon is playing! Are you up for some hard-boiled action?!” Eiko was stunned. “Oh. I guess not.”
“No no no no,” Eiko replied. “I, um, I really like that kind of stuff. But I’ve never told anyone because it doesn’t seem ‘girly’ enough, you know?”
“Hm,” Makoto said. “Well, women can appreciate all sorts of things, right?”
Eiko smiled and blushed. “Yeah.”
They went up to the ticket booth. “Two for Like a Dragon,” Makoto said. They got their tickets, and headed in.
Meanwhile, Ren took Sumire up to Shinjuku. Sumire was a little nervous. “Are you sure about this? Shinjuku isn’t known for its restraint.”
“Trust me,” Ren said. “We’re going straight there, spend a little time, and then we’ll be out. Besides, one of my friends runs it.”
“Well, if it’s one of your friends, I trust you,” Sumire said. They held hands as Ren led the way.
They soon arrived at Chihaya’s fortune telling booth. “Ah, hello,” Chihaya said.
“Hi,” Ren said. “This is… There’s no point in me hiding it, is there?”
Chihaya giggled. “I foretold that you were coming with your lover. So unless there is a boy hiding in the shadows somewhere...”
Ren sighed. “No, you got us.” Chihaya giggled again.
“Um, who is this?” Sumire wondered.
“Oh, forgive me,” Chihaya said. “My name is Chihaya Mifune. I’m a fortune teller.”
“I see,” Sumire said. “And a very good one at that, I can tell.”
“Thanks,” Chihaya said. “And your name?”
“Oh, right,” Sumire said. “I’m Sumire Yoshizawa. Ren’s girlfriend.” She bowed.
“Hm hm,” Chihaya chuckled. “So, what brings you here tonight, of all nights?”
“Well, um, Sumire isn’t 100% in the Halloween spirit, but I convinced her to do something a little fun. So perhaps she could have her fortune read?”
“I see,” Chihaya said. She turned to Sumire. “Are you alright with this?”
“Well, if Ren trusts you, I trust you,” Sumire said.
“Very well,” Chihaya said. She and Sumire set up the reading. Chihaya drew three cards. “I see.” She flipped the first one. “The Fool, upright. It tells that you are about to embark on a new journey.”
“Huh,” Sumire said.
Chihaya flipped the second card. “The Faith, upright. This journey will help you realize your true potential and do away with the lies of the past.”
“I see…” Sumire said.
Chihaya flipped the last part. “The Hunger, in reverse. This journey will end once the forces that try to suppress you are revealed to be nothing more than a shadow of lies and deceit. Only then will the truth come to you.”
“Hmmm,” Sumire said. “Well, that was a little intense…” Ren was a little worried. “But it was interesting.” Ren was relieved. “And given your penchant for seeing the truth, I imagine something like that happening.”
“Do you know what it is?” Chihahya asked.
“I have an idea,” Sumire said. “But it’s rather personal…”
“Say no more,” Chihaya said. “Just know I’ll be rooting for you.”
“Thanks,” Sumire said. “Oh, how much do I owe you?”
“Don’t worry,” Chihaya said. “This one’s on the house.”
Ren was stunned. “But, um, you know?” Sumire was confused.
“Don’t worry,” Chihaya said. “It will be alright in the end.”
Sumire looked at her. “Are you also undertaking a journey?”
Chihaya nodded. “And I know I’m coming up to a crossroads soon. I just have to believe in myself.”
“Well, you know I’m here for you,” Ren said.
“Me too,” Sumire replied.
“Thanks,” Chihaya said. “I think I’m going to need it.” She turned to Ren. “Especially from you.” Ren nodded.
“Um, if you believe in Ren as much as I do,” Sumire noted, “then I think things will go well for you.”
Chihaya giggled. “Well, I can’t believe in her as much as you do.” Sumire slightly blushed. “But I can tell that Ren is a force to be reckoned with.”
“Well, Sumire’s no slouch either,” Ren said.
“I can see that,” Chihaya said. “And if the two of you are together, then you’d be unstoppable.”
Ren smiled and blushed. “Thanks.”
Fortune-Chihaya Mifune: Rank 6
“So, do you want to stay and watch some other fortunes being read?” Ren asked.
“You should go…” Chihaya said. “Not that you wouldn’t be interested, but Halloween in Shinjuku attracts more of the bizarre crowd.”
“I think she’s right,” Sumire said. “But I had fun.”
“Well that’s all I need to hear,” Ren said. “Bye!”
“It was nice meeting you!” Sumire said.
“Bye bye you two!” Chihaya said. Ren and Sumire left. They shared a kiss before getting on the train.
Ryuji and Ann were still out and about having fun. "Man, this is the BEST Halloween I've ever had! Thanks for dragging me out!"
"Hm hm, no problem," Ann said. "To be honest, I think this is the best Halloween I've ever had too."
"No kiddin'?" Ryuji said. "Well, I know one thing that'll make it even better." "You read my mind," Ann said. The two shared a kiss.
As Akechi and Lena were heading back, Lena leaned on Akechi’s shoulder. “Tonight was fun.”
“Indeed,” Akechi replied. “To be honest, I never really liked Halloween before. I didn’t like some of the costumes I was given, but, well, you know why.” Lena chuckled. “And then after getting big, I didn’t have time or couldn’t get a costume to hide me enough” He looked deep into Lena’s eyes. “But tonight was really fun. And I feel like with you, I can enjoy anything.”
“Oh, stop!” Lena said. They were both blushing.
“This is a really nice costume,” Akechi said. “I wonder what you’ll come up with in the future.”
“Right…” Lena said. Do we have a future? Am I going home? She looked up at Akechi. Or is this my home?
Meanwhile, Akechi was distracted with his own thoughts. I can’t let her know I’ll probably be busy. Once the plan is set in motion, I might not have time for big stuff like this. But I’m sure she’ll understand. I just need everything in place.
He looked back at Lena. He leaned in, and Lena met him for a kiss. “Happy Halloween,” Akechi said.
“Happy Halloween,” Lena replied. The two continued onward.
Once Haru got out of the meeting, she got out her phone.
Haru: Everyone! I have some big news!
Haru: The SIU told Okumura Foods to recall its Starfall Coffee venture.
Haru: Something has to be up.
Futaba: Already know!
Futaba: Morgana overheard some police officers talking about it.
Futaba: He said that they heard they were causing the mental shutdowns!
Haru: WHAT?!
Sumire: That’s absurd!
Futaba: Maybe, but nothing about this case is “normal”.
Sumire: I guess you’re right.
Yusuke: Have you talked with Riko yet?
Futaba: Not yet.
Futaba: I was looking over my mom’s notes, and the notes about the director.
Futaba: I lost track of time.
Ren: It’s OK. Now we have something else.
Ren: Something big!
Futaba: Right. I’m on it!
Jose: What else did you find?
Futaba: The director is a very crafty person.
Futaba: His profile is full of twists and turns.
Futaba: I imagine that if he did kill his wife, he’d know how to make it look incidental.
Futaba: As for mom’s notes, I found something interesting.
Futaba: Apparently if you amass enough fame, you can tap into the collective unconscious.
Sumire: Mementos!
Jose: But if whoever killed your mom has these notes…
Futaba: That’s what I figured.
Futaba: We’re not the only ones in there.
Yusuke: Do you think it has anything to do with that body of water?
Futaba: Probably.
Ren: We should check, just to be sure.
Futaba: Right.
Futaba: Anyways, Haru, can you get the schematic for Starfall?
Haru: I don't think so.
Haru: I’m not great with computers to begin with, and I don’t think I’d have access to something like that.
Futaba: Plan B then.
Futaba: Come over, and I’ll give you the Futaba special. I’ll take care of the rest.
Haru: Got it.
Ren: See you all later!
Futaba: Seeya!
Futaba then went to work contacting Riko.
Futaba: Riko!
Futaba: Something big just happened.
Riko: What is it?
Futaba: Did you know that the SIU instructed a recall on Okumura Foods Starfall Coffee?
Riko: I was.
Riko: Sae told me about that.
Futaba: Well, it turns out that it’s because somehow Starfall Coffee is causing the mental shutdowns.
Riko: Oh right.
Riko: The director mentioned that.
Futaba: And you forgot?!
Riko: Forgive me. A lot was happening.
Riko: The fake calling card, Eirs, it was a lot to process.
Futaba: Well, I can’t say I blame you.
Futaba: BUT we have an idea as to how this was being used.
Riko: Go on.
Futaba: Well, looking through my mom’s notes, there’s a special concoction you can make to infiltrate people’s hearts. But you need to get them to ingest the blood of the person infiltrating after they drank it.
Futaba: So I suspect that Starfall Coffee was the means to do just that.
Riko: That seems like a lot.
Futaba: Right, but if this organization is so big to include Madarame, Kaneshiro, Okumura, and Principal Kobayakawa, they may have more numbers at their disposal.
Futaba: You don’t need a lot of blood, you need a lot of people.
Riko: I see.
Riko: Want me to get the schematics for Starfall Coffee?
Futaba: I'm on that on my end.
Futaba: But I do need you to do something.
Riko: What is it?
Futaba: Can you get the file on the murder case involving the director’s son?
Futaba: We suspect that he may have been involved, and that maybe he also murdered his wife.
Riko: Oh my!
Riko: I’m on it!
Riko: Oh, and I have a plan.
Futaba: You do?
Riko: Yeah. I asked Sae last night about what happens if you challenge her.
Riko: She told me that if that happens, she’s confronting the director.
Riko: She believes that once you’re done with her, you’ll meet up with him somehow.
Futaba: So we know where she’ll be.
Riko: And you told me when.
Riko: So all that’s left is to figure out what comes next.
Futaba: Right.
Futaba: Well, regardless, we need a way for Sae to get out.
Futaba: I think I have an idea for that.
Riko: We do need to fish for more information from the director too.
Futaba: Right. Akechi said not to ruffle any feathers until it’s time to strike.
Riko: You’re in contact with Akechi?
Futaba: Tentatively.
Futaba: It’s an uneasy alliance.
Riko: I see.
Riko: Well, regardless, I think I know a way to get some information once things go off.
Futaba: It can't involve us, because we’ll be busy in Sae’s palace.
Riko: Right.
Riko: My plan still works then.
Futaba: Well then, let’s see if our plans can work in tandem.
Riko: OK!
The two of them discussed their plan. Once they finished…
Futaba: Damn! You’re really clever.
Riko: Thanks.
Riko: You’re really smart yourself.
Futaba: Thanks.
Futaba: Now all we have to do is make sure we do well protecting Sae, while also making her see the error of her ways.
Riko: You have my confidence on that front.
Futaba: Thanks.
Futaba: Goodnight!
Riko: Happy Halloween!
Futaba: Happy Halloween!
Riko put her phone away. She began looking through more notes.
Sae came out of her office. Riko looked up. “Oh, how are you doing?”
“I’m feeling great! Sae said. “This upcoming trial will be easy, and soon I’ll have The Phantom Thieves in my grasp. Hm. You know, I saw a bunch of people dress up as Phantom Thieves today. Thinking that they’re heroes.”
“Well hold on,” Riko said. “People dress up as villains too.”
“I guess that’s true,” Sae said.
“Phantom Thieves aside, how do you feel about Halloween?” Riko said. “I wasn’t too big on it as a kid, but when I grew up and could pick what I wanted to dress as, I suddenly got it.”
“A late bloomer, I see,” Sae noted.
“Yeah…” Riko said. “That.”
“Hm,” Sae said. “Well, I’ve always liked Halloween. But lately, I haven’t had the time for it.”
“I see,” Riko said. “It is busy here, huh.”
“Well, there are occasions where things let up,” Sae said. “Last year, I got out of work early and dressed up as a werewolf.”
"Ooo. Spooky," Riko remarked.
“Eh, not really,” Sae said. “It was kind of a last minute thing.”
“Still, I bet it looked great on you!” Riko said.
“Um, yes…” Sae said, slightly blushing. “Anyways, what’s your favorite costume you’ve ever worn?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” Riko said. “One year, I wore this immaculate female Vampire costume. It just felt so GOOD, you know?”
“Hm hm. You didn’t need to add ‘female’ to that,” Sae pointed out.
“Oh, uh, right…” Riko said, nervous. “Well, what about you? What was your favorite costume?”
Sae paused. “Don’t laugh.” She sighed. “It was Makoto’s first Halloween. I wanted to dress up as something spooky, but my parents were worried that would upset Makoto. So they made me wear this Buchimaru-kun costume. I hated it. I was miserable for the first few hours.
But then there was a loud noise. My parents were worried that something bad happened to the neighbors, and rushed outside to check on them, leaving me with Makoto. Suddenly, I was alone with her. Carrying her. I was so nervous. I did my best, but I was so unsure of myself.
But you know what she did? She smiled. That was the first time Makoto smiled at me. My parents came back and assured me that everything was alright. They noticed me taking care of Makoto, and I got to do a lot of things. I fed her. I burped her. I played with her. It was nice.
So that’s why that’s my favorite costume. I don’t know why I’m telling you that. Usually, I say it’s the one time I went as the Black Featherman.”
“Hmmm,” Riko said. “You know, I’m partial to Pink myself.”
“I figured you would be,” Sae said.
“But that story was really sweet,” Riko said. “And don’t worry, I won’t say anything.”
Sae smiled. “Thanks. Let’s go home.” Riko nodded, and the two headed off. As they were leaving, Sae glanced at Riko. Alright Sae. It’s a deal. Once I’ve captured The Phantom thieves, I’m asking her out!

#writing related - self explanatory but its mostly me complaining about my fics, plot holes i find, and polls bc i'm indecisive
#friends <3 - my actual conversation style interaction with my mutuals
#wtf dc - for whenever i find out that something that sounds just a bit to out of pocket to be cannon in dc, is cannon in dc. (ex: bruce's grandmother killing her husband, the candle ritual, dick shaving his hair and going by rick, etc)
#janet's life - my self indulgent canon compliant backstory for Janet Drake
#lena and tim - my even more self indulgent au where Lena Luthor adopts Tim Drake after his parents die, the fic is being plotted currently. THE FIC IS CANCELED!!! LEX IS LENA'S BROTHER! LENA IS KON'S AUNT!! THE PLANNED TIMKON IS LEGAL INCEST! (why does this keep happening??? TvT)
#bravery points game - I've started playing a points game with my anxiety, where every time I do something that scares me/my anxiety told me would end in disaster I get a point! It's stupid but it's motivating, I'm being brave! (Even tho it's terrifying) I do really have a points goal but I wanna try to get to 100 before the end of the year!
Thats all for now!! I'll probably update this once i realize i forgot smth tho

Find me in Paris or how not to give a proper send off to a character
Find me in Paris tells the story of Lena, a girl from 1905, who ends up in 2018 because of Time Travelling. She is hunt down by the Bureau an organization who is controlling Time Travelling and time travelers. Lena not being in her time period constitutes for the Bureau an offense. She is also chase by the time collectors, outlaws time travelers who do not respect the rules of the Bureau and who are also hunted by him. In the meantime, Lena is trying to be a ballerina in the Opera of Paris.
Find me in Paris is one of those shows that have an endearing charm to it that make overlook all his flaws. But there one aspect of the show that i dislike a lot : it's how in season 3 they end the storylines of 4 characters in a very disappointing maner. This, probably way to long, post will approach the way the show handle the departure of Max, Thea, Pinky and Clive.
I want to preface that i don't know and don't want know the behind the scene details which led to the departure of the actors/characters. The writers have to work with a minimal time frame to make those exit, since 3/4 leave in the second episode of the season. It's wasn't an easy task. But the way they chose to send off those 4 characters wasn't great . I will now discuss each of them separately to explain why it's doesn't work for me and why i'm even mad at the way they handled those characters.
Max : After be one of the main love interest of Lena for 2 season, Max vanish at the start of season 3, leaving behind only a letter (accompanied by a voice over). After being seriously injured in season 2, he leave the school because he can't be cured. He is the only one we don't see on screen, only a montage of some of his scenes after Lena read his letter. His dream of becoming a dancer is now out of reach. A very depressing end for someone who was until that point one of the main characters. Max is in weird position because if you had asked me before that who is gonna end up with Lena, i was sure it's will be him. I'm not even a big fan of Max and Lena's relationship mainly because at the start of the show they were both in a relationship with someone else. But Max was the best of Lena's love interests: Henry, her boyfriend at the start of the show, was very tiring at times and Nico, a Bureau agent's introduced in season 3 is an interesting concept but it didn't work (at least for me). And the weirdest thing was that before Max left, it was clear that they would end up together. Max's father is also still in the series even after his departure.
Thea : After be for two season my favorite character, Thea chose to stay in 1905 to focus on her career. Alright, she was in 1905 in the first half of Season 2 and wants to go back to that time. In addition, her encounters with the Bureau leave her very afraid. So it makes sense that she wants to leave behind all this time traveling stuff and focus on her career right ? It's not like season 2 spent a lot of time trying to bring Thea back into present time. And also show her altering history and Lena fuming seeing that. Its also don't make sense that no one declare her disparition because, unlike season 2 where Lena and Ines where alimenting her social media account, no one do it in season 3. Pinky said she is on tour and that's it. And above all, it does not fit with the personality of Thea who until now don't give in on nothing. At the end of season 2 she wanted to live both in present time and 1905. Settling for less, for only 1905, was out for her character. Later in the season Frank said that he miss her and to quote him "the tour is only a few more months" implying that he is waiting for her. But that's it (the show had another love story in store for him). The funniest thing about her exit is: since Thea isn't in her proper time period now she can be a target for the Bureau...
Pinky : After Ines's had her memory erased by the Bureau, Pinky chose to not time traveling anymore. Since season 1, their love story has been built and it was interesting because Pinky was one of the time collectors and Ines Lena's best friend. After Pinky lose, as he said, the only girl he ever love he quit in episode 2. During episode 10 Ines regain her memory. One episode later she have a exchange with Franck and both of them are sorry for the loss of their respective love interest. I find Ines answer's strange when Franck said that he is sorry about Pinky to what Ines said "not talking about it". For all we know Pinky is still in the present. Why Ines don't try to reach to him ? And mind you it's in the same conversation that Frank says that he miss Thea and is waiting for her return form the tour, what Ines acknowledge. ... then few episodes later they start to date each other. The worst thing is : there are pretty cute together and work pretty well as couple. If we ignore the fact that Frank's friend that he see as his brother is somewhere sad that the love of his life lost all memory of him...
Clive: In the seventh episode of the season Clive go to the present with Claudine. He leave her there and mention going back in time to ride the dinosaurs then pass the portal to never be seen again...AND I WAS MAD... In season 2 Clive is erased by the Bureau and it's a huge deal for Frank to get him back. Finally after almost a season the trio of the time collectors will be reunited again...for Pinky to leave. But I was still hopeful the first time i watched the show. We didn't have Clive for most season 2 but we will have him for season 3....until episode 7 i guess...And Frank never ask about time again...
So to resume, for all we know : Max had to give up his dream, Thea is stuck in 1905, Pinky is wandering sad and alone in the present (meanwhile his bff is dating the only girl he had ever love) and Clive could have been eat by a dinosaur.
What all of those characters send off have in common : they never got an actual ending of their story. The show end without giving us a proper closure. If we have to keep the same exit for all of them there a solution to give them and us closure. At the end of the show Lena overtake the bureau and form a new bureau with Frank and Nico. Why not having a character saying that there are searching for a time period where Max injury's is curable or saying that Max is now is the futur and follow a traitement. Or if we don't want to involve Max in time travel why don't we see his father talk about him and say he's fine. For Thea you can have Lena fuming seeing all the change that she curently making for dance's history and that she will send someone to take her back in the present. For Clive, Frank find his painting and that he become a famous peintor in the past (referring to the painting of the time collectors painted by Clive in season 2). And for Pinky....actually he is one of the most screw up by the show (Max too but not in the same way)... so someone (maybe Henry ? Pinky helps him in season 2 and I don't see Frank mentioning him and i can't think of someone else speaking about him) can say he is doing fine traveling the world in the present ?
All to say that never really mentioning them again after their departure of the show was very strange. At least we have Jeff mentioning time to time that he miss Max and Thea...But he is the only (Jeff MVP of Find me in Paris). Maybe i'm over dramatic (just a little). But I like this show and its characters. When I watch the show again I wonder if I should stop at the end of season 2, but it's not really an ending. So I'm watching season 3 and I'm pissed off at how they treated these characters.
You have reached the end of my wanderings. See you somewhere in time !

What other projects have you watched with got and hotd actors and how do you like their performance outside of got/hotd?
I’ve watched probably….most of Matt Smith’s filmography on account of watching Doctor Who in high school and falling in love with him. I think he’s incredibly talented and charismatic and genuinely perfect casting as Daemon. I had also seen Paddy Considine in that movie Pride altho I didn’t recognize him as Viserys lmao but i adore that movie, you should watch if you haven’t seen it, it’s about the Lesbians And Gays Support The Miners movement and I definitely cried watching it aksjdjd. I also watched all of bates motel as it was airing which olivia is in (and also the sound of metal, which she and riz ahmed are amazing in, and also riz steven and chadwick were robbed that year smh). olivia and matt are actually The Reason i started hotd lol i didn’t intend to watch it but then i was like oh…..but……….i love them aksjsjs.
I have technically seen Rhys in several things but he’s Fine. I am still mad about him having zero chemistry with Lucy Liu in Elementary and ruining an entire season by having negative rizz. why am i supposed to believe that man is like some great love of watson’s life when they don’t even look like they like each other. rhys count your fuckijg days. i’ve also seen graham mactavish in a number of things, the first being Outlander and he was like, one of the best antagonist characters in the show, was both excited and devastated when his character died hah he has one of my favorite lines in the show which is “the idea of grinding your corn does tickle me” 💀💀😂😂
For the main show, I had seen Charles Dance in Phantom (he’s really good even tho it’s a more romantic take on the story but that’s fine i still love it!!!), Lena, Peter, & Mark in like Most Of Their Filmographies bc i was already a fan of them, who hasn’t seen at least five Sean Bean deaths, and I’d seen a few Alexander Siddig, Ciaran Hinds, Iain Glenn, & Indira Varma in a bunch of stuff too and loved them - Kingdom of Heaven & Syriana & DS9, Persuasion & The Terror, Resident Evil, Kama Sutra.
I’ve seen Gwendoline, Elyes (he was Rakharo, rip to an icon), Thomas Brodie, Sophie, Maisie, Kit, Richard, Jason (Momoa), Michelle, and Tobias in a bunch of other stuff since I started the show. I think Gwendoline is incredibly talented, as are Sophie and Maisie. Richard imo usually needs a good script to shine - like Rocketman? amazing. Eternals? Meh - and Kit is uh. Sometimes he has good chemistry with other actors. I paid real money to see him in Pompeii and my sibling holds a grudge against me to this day for that one aksjd. Jason Momoa has a tendency to just play different versions of himself but the movie Red Road Redemption is real good, it’s about MMIW & his acting abilities really shine, I’d love to see him in more serious or more romantic roles and less action roles. I cannot praise Tobias Menzies more highly, hes in Outlander, The Terror, and the Crown and he’s just sublime in all of them and you’d never know it by the way they wrote Edmure. OH SHIT also obviously Jacob Artist in IWTV is amazinnnnnnng EGOT INCOMING and Nathalie Emmanuel was REALLY FUN in The Invitation!!!
Probably my favorite of everyone is Peter Dinklage tho, he’s very serious & choosy with his roles bc he doesn’t want to play a stereotype and it’s made his filmography just *muah* like it’s so interesting and varied and he puts his whole heart into every role however goofy or serious it is. i love him, i want him to be the romantic lead in more stuff bc i’m a romantic and also like, a pervert and he’s so handsome aksksk.
Also Ciaran Hinds & Amanda Root Persuasion >>>>>>>>>>> Those Other Two

MONSTRLIO by GERARDO SÁMANO CÓRDOVA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
quickly: a grieving mother grows a monster from the lung of her dead child (the grieving process / emotions made manifest / folk magic and wives’ tales / hunger pains and sharp teeth / friends who could be lovers / women who work by the hour / the mystery of metamorphosis / sleeping in trees in the park / taming wild things / loving and letting go).
This is the story of four people (Magos, her partner Joseph, her friend Lena, and Monstrilio) adjusting to the loss of one person (Santiago). Santiago, a young boy born with one lung, succumbs to his condition at 11 years old and his parents’ lives are halted and darkened. His mother, Magos, in her grief, takes a piece of his lung to remember him by. After going home to Mexico City and hearing an old folk tale about a woman who grew a man, she decides to feed the piece of lung. It grows… but it grows into a monster, whom she calls ‘Monstrilio’.
Transferring her attachment from Santiago to Monstrilio, Magos binds herself to this hungry and uncontrollable creature whom she sees as her son returned.
The concept is interesting but weighed down and dulled by the portrayal of this story through four different people. What should have been an outstanding work of family horror (i.e. Hill House, Hereditary, Servant, etc.) is instead just an *okay* story about a family, with a ‘creature’ running around in the background. There is no horror. A monster, but no real ‘horror’. The close falls flat and does not meet the ambition of the emotions called forth at the opening. There are some poetic moments, but overall, not enough to speak to the heart. For how little horror Monstrilio’s ‘monsterness’ brought to the story, Magos may as well have adopted an unruly dog from the local pound.

more thoughts: NO SPOILERS!
After reading THE SHARDS by BRET EASTON ELLIS, 500+ pages of cocaine-fueled private school kids, I wanted something that would bring me back down to earth a bit. I’d previously read HUMAN SACRIFICES by MARÍA FERNANDA AMPUERO and was so moved I checked it out again, immediately after returning it to the library. SACRIFICIO by ERNESTO MESTRE-REED was incredible as well. Both writers deal with the heavy heavy stuff, but with such incredible worlds and characters, grief is an active part of the story. It shifts and changes as the characters change. It is an antagonist almost, something to resist and have conflict with. Here, it is just some abstract thing, unintentionally drawing energy away from the center.
I was disappointed at where the story ended up (as well as how it got there). I can’t tell an author what to write, but there just seemed to be so many missed opportunities!! (I wonder what audience this was written for?) It had a beginning, middle, and end… the characters were distinct… the core plot is intriguing… but I couldn’t find the unique and horrific tear-jerking story I thought that I would find in this book.
Separately, I’m also starting to become annoyed at how loosely the genre label ‘horror’ is applied to stories. Several reviews of this book mention this being ‘truly’ or ‘genuinely’ scary… to quote Tiffany Pollard, “It was nothing like that… nothing of the sort”. Horror should be horrific! And more than just blood, guts, and scares; good horror unashamedly examines the darkness and gives air to the things we’d rather not talk about.

i answered this one in words already so have some emojis: ✨🥰🙌🤗🫶🎉
💎why is writing important to you?
creative release outside of my day job is VERY important to me and writing and d&d are my favourite types!!
💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!
ria ty for letting me gush about my current wip. let's talk about the bridgerchuks. under the read more bc l o l
✨ fic writer asks meme ✨
ok so i mentioned in a previous reply that i'm writing a fic where matthew tkachuk is the eldest of eight so like.... here's a list of all my tkachuks, in age order, including all the ocs bc i love them:
Matthew - my son, not much different to canon but turn that Big Brother Energy up another, oh, 5 notches
Braeden (Brady) - brady also isn't much different, really, i'm not here to change too much up
Aisling (Ash) - here the changes start!! ash is two years younger than brady and was born the summer the family moved to st louis. she's loud and sure of herself and athletic to an extent but not into team sports - she goes to school in california and likes to surf and she's going to be a lawyer
Olena (Lena) - lena came two years later - the summer keith ended up reporting to training camp overweight which like. good reason. so many kids buddy. she's the quiet tkachuk. she likes her alone time more than any of the others and she will carve it out for herself, but she still loves them all fiercely even if she wishes they'd shut the fuck up. she watches everything so she knows a lot about hockey even though she never plays (and eventually will become a hockey scout bc of this)
Ciaran - Twin #1 - ciaran did the thing all the other boys did and went "hockey? ok!" but he did it different and went "shouldn't one of us play d though?" so he's a defenceman. i realised during the draft this year it would have been his year to get drafted to based the team he plays for off the teams who took d men in the higher pick so ya boy's a hab! and excited about it! he loves attention, and did theatre in high school (which is where he met his long term girlfriend who will follow him to montreal after college) and he's passionate and not afraid to speak his mind and stand up for minorities
Madison (Maddie) - Twin #2 - maddie saw her twin playing hockey and went "me too!" and then saw him switch to d and went "erm, no?". matthew and brady will be the first to tell you she's got the best slapshot in the family. she's playing collegiate but we'll see what happens with all the pwhl stuff before i decide what happens with her.
worth noting kieth had a vasectomy after the twins which, erm, did not stick. sorry buddy.
Oleksander (Xander) - xander was a suprise and i realised after building the spreadsheet (of course there's a spreadsheet) that his conception would have been when keith got home after being a playoff rental to the trashers LOL. he plays hockey as a kid bc he feels like he has to, and he's so nervous to admit he doesn't want to but everyone's like.. literally do what you want. why would you play professionally if you don't enjoy it!! so he's gonna go to college and do something DIFFERENT and be so much happier for it
Taryn - taryn is still taryn!! just much younger!! she is born in 2009, so keith's last playing year as he retired post 09-10 season. she's still the baby, still perfect in everyone's eyes. still highly competitive and will go into field hockey.
i went OFF and i'm not even sorry but i love them its nice to release them into the world a little after so long of them living in mine and @puckthisshift's head lol
