the feeling when the restaurant you work at lets you wear graphic t-shirts so naturally you get yourself a Lena Luthor Foundation™ shirt and then you wear it every week a few months and no one's said a thing about yesterday when someone goes "yo, is your shirt… is that from Superman?" just pain. lots of pain. i kindly explained that no, it was in fact from Supergirl. but i've just been hoping some supercorp shipper would say something and we could be friends. but no. just superman.
i thought this was gonna end well, the way my jaw dropped,,, bro no that's a devastation

Samantha Danvers was working in her office at the Lena Luthor Foundation when the company’s namesake abruptly stormed in.
“Alright, talk.”
Sam, clearly unfazed, didn’t bother looking up from her laptop. “Hello to you too.”
Lena huffed and rolled her eyes. “Hello, Sam,” she said impatiently.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” Sam tapped a few keys, her eyes still fixed on the screen.
Lena stood rigidly with her thumbs in her suit-pant pockets, fingers beating an annoyed rhythm. “I want to know about the bet.”
Sam paused her typing; her jaw set tightly as she forced herself not to look at her boss. “What bet are you referring to?”
Lena scoffed, “Oh please, Samantha. Don’t insult my intelligence.”
Sam huffed out a defeated breath and turned to face Lena. “What did you hear?”
Lena stepped closer and placed her hands on Sam’s desk. “Since you, Kara, J’onn, and M’gann were off doing the hero thing last night, Alex, Nia, Brainy, and I went to Al’s. Halfway through the evening, Nia was updating us on the status of their house hunting and complaining about the home prices being exponentially higher the closer they got to the city. Brainy then made a very off-hand comment along the lines of ‘…if only we had won the wager…’, but before he could finish, Nia elbowed him in the ribs while your wife kicked him under the table. The rest of the night, they changed the subject anytime I brought it up.” Lena leaned in and eyed Sam with a laser-sharp gaze. “So, tell me, what were all of you wagering on and what does it have to do with me and Kara?”
Sam took on a mock-offended posture, an indignant huff pushing out of her nose. “Awfully presumptive. What makes you think…and this is not an admission…that the bet was about you and Kara?”
“Process of elimination,” Lena said, feeling insulted. “C’mon, Sam. Did you forget I am first and foremost a scientist? I asked Kara when I got home last night if she knew anything, and she said she didn’t-”
“How do you know she’s not lying?” Sam interupted, trying her damndest to hide her grin.
Lena looked at Sam in disbelief. “Because secret identity aside, when it comes to me, my girlfriend is a shit liar.”
Sam nodded. “Point conceded. Continue.”
Lena flashed Sam a smug grin. “This morning, I ran into J’onn and M’gann at the DEO and asked them about it. They suddenly remembered they had to go grocery shopping and flew out of the balcony before I could get another word in.” Sam began nervously rubbing the back of her neck. “So, add J’onn and M’gann to you and the other three idiots, with Kara and I being the only two not in on it, it stands to reason that the bet has to do with us,” Lena finished arrogantly.
Sam’s face twisted into a look of indignation. “Hey! What makes you think I’m part of this…this…conspiracy?”
A look of complete bewilderment fell over Lena’s face. Resigned, she shook her head. “If your wife’s in on it, that guarantees you’re complicit.” Lena’s stare drilled into Sam for emphasis.
The CFO deflated and shook her head. “Coluan asshat. I should throw him into the sun.” Lena’s lips twisted into a cocky smile. Sam looked at her watch and saw that it was just past four o’clock. “Fuck it. It’s five o’clock somewhere,” Sam mumbled as she motioned towards the brown couch behind Lena. “Have a seat, I’ll get the drinks.”
Lena headed towards the couch, dropping her clutch on the coffee table and unbuttoning her coat. She had no sooner sat down before a tumbler filled with scotch was in her hand courtesy of Sam and her super-speed. Sam, taking a sip from her glass, had already settled on the other side.
Lena allowed her friend to indulge in a few sips silently before throwing an expectant look at her CFO. “Waiting.”
Sam took a long draw from her drink and rolled her neck, an audible crack resulted. She let out a long breath and sank further into the couch. “The bet had to do with when you and Kara were going to hook-up.”
“Hook-up, hook-up or start dating?”
“It wasn’t specified, but we all assumed since Kara is a complete Pollyanna, the two would run parallel to each other.” Sam took a drink to hide a knowing grin.
Lena chose to ignore Sam’s veiled implication that she was more morally flexible than her girlfriend, the look on her face instead remained banal. “What were the terms.”
Sam cleared her throat and shifted into executive mode. “The over/under was six months. No minimum buy-in and you could add additional money to the pot at any point, but you couldn’t change the time period you originally bet on. The pot would be split evenly amongst the winners. People were allowed to subtly try and influence the two of you but were not allowed to blatantly interfere.”
Lena tapped her finger on her chin. “Six months…when did the bet begin?”
“At me and Alex’s wedding reception.”
Lena quickly did the math in her head; she and Kara had announced that they were a couple four months after the wedding. Lena hummed to herself but remained stone faced. “Whose idea was it?”
“Winn.” Sam said without hesitation, not feeling an ounce of remorse for throwing him under the proverbial bus. “Apparently, he watched you two have ‘an emotionally charged moment’ that convinced him your relationship was heading in the direction of more than platonic.”
“For god’s sake. We were crying and hugging. There was nothing remotely romantic about it,” Lena grumbled.
Sam raised her hands in mock surrender. “Hey, me and Alex were about to take off for Argo. I’m just quoting what he said.” Lena clenched her jaw but didn’t respond. “Whatever Winn saw encouraged him to make a beeline for Nia and Brainy and…well…the rest is history.”
Lena took a sip of her scotch before resting her elbow on the back of the couch, placing her head lightly on her fist. “So, what did the pot get up to?”
“Thirty-six grand,” Sam quietly said.
Lena abruptly sat up; her eyebrows comically raised. “Holy shit! How many people were in on this?”
Sam seemed to shrink into her seat. “A lot?” she said with a sheepish look on her face.
“Names, Samantha. I want names,” Lena ordered in a playful variation of her boardroom voice.
“Okay,” Sam grumbled in defeat. With a burst of super-speed, Sam was back on the couch with her laptop, furiously typing away.
Lena chuckled. “Of course they put you in charge of the bookkeeping.”
“Well, I am the only corporate accountant in our circle of friends…so…duh.” Sam shook her head in faux disgust. Lena remained silent while Sam tapped away at her keyboard, opting instead to take a few more sips of her drink. Before Lena had time to enjoy the satisfying burn, Sam indicated she was finished. “Ok, so, you already know about me, Alex, J’onn, M’gann, Brainy, Nia, Winn…there was Lois and Clark-”
“What?” Lena interrupted. “They don’t even like me.”
“Actually, Clark likes you a lot. He says Lois still has trust issues with you, but he suspects she has a bit of a gambling problem, so…”
Lena arched her eyebrow. “Good to know.”
Sam shrugged. “Eliza, Alura and Zor-El-”.
“Really? That seems very un-Kryptonian.” Lena interjected.
“Alex and I said the same thing when Eliza told us they were onboard, but I guess Alura jumped at the chance to throw in after Eliza broke it down for her during their weekly call.”
“Hold on, Eliza and Alura talk every week?” Lena said, a hint of trepidation in her voice.
“Yup,” Sam said with a pop. She smiled diabolically. “Good luck with that.”
Lena gave an imperceptible nod as she started fidgeting with her glass; distracted by the implications of a weekly discussion between Kara’s “moms”.
“Where was I?” Sam mumbled as she scanned for where she left off. “Ah, there we are. Jess, Cat Grant, Andre-”.
“That zrhykhig!” Lena blurted out. “That’s why she’s been throwing herself at me like a bitch in heat since the wedding.” Her anger continued to swell as pieces of the puzzle fell into place. “She took the over, didn’t she? Of course, she did. I don’t even know why I’m asking. I’m sure she thought the best way to keep me and Kara apart was to con me into fucking her.” Waves of violet energy began cascading over Lena’s hands. “Swear to Rao I’m going to find a spell that’ll undo the nose job she got for her sweet-sixteen.”
Sam looked up from her laptop nervously. “Whoa, slow down there, Elphaba. There’s no need to mutilate her face.” Sam fixed Lena with a disapproving glare that seemed to calm her down; the magic arcing over her hands dissipated. “To answer your question, yes, she took the over. Now, are you going to stop interrupting me so I can get through this list?”
“No, I’m not,” Lena said defiantly.
“Worth a shot,” Sam mumbled to herself. “Next, we have Barry and Iris West-Allen-” Sam shot a hand up to stop Lena before she interrupted. “Yes, I know you just met them a month ago at his birthday party. Just a heads up, the rest of this list is comprised of people you first met at said party, but please bear in mind they’ve all known Kara for years.”
Lena closed her mouth and mimicked zipping her lips shut.
“Thank you.” Sam nodded, momentarily relieved. “As I was saying, Barry and Iris, Ray and Nora Palmer, Sara and Ava Lance-”.
“Wait, Sara Lance?” Lena threw a knowing smile at her friend.
“Yes.”
“White Canary?”
“Yes.”
“Wasn’t she the one that…”
“Yes.”
“With Alex…”
“Yes.”
“The one you threatened to…”
“Yes! Can we please stop talking about the woman my wife had a one-night stand with?”
Lena snorted several times as she tried to contain her laughter.
Sam, fuming, returned her attention to the list. “Cisco Ramon, Caitlin Snow, Mick Rory-”
“The big guy that sat in the corner, finished off two cases of beer, and spent the entire night grunting at everyone?” Lena asked with a puzzled look on her face.
“That’s the one.” Sam perked up. “And finally…Kate Kane.”
Sam swore she heard Lena growl. “The short-haired brunette that was all sauced up and kept getting handsy with Kara?”
“Yes. Most people just call her Kate…or Batwoman.” Sam could see a vein beginning to protrude from Lena’s forehead. “For the sake of context, she started flirting with Kara after placing her wager. I think she was pulling the same move as Andrea.” Sam reached across the couch and patted Lena’s knee reassuringly. “So, maybe don’t go all Jigsaw on her?” Sam appealed.
Lena’s posture softened, but she seemed to somehow look both perplexed and astonished at the same time. “I just don’t understand how all these people, that I’ve spent a grand total of less than two hours with, felt confident enough to wager on when Kara and I would get together.”
“Pretty simple, really. They spent more than five minutes in the same room with you two,” Sam plainly stated.
Lena leveled Sam with a look of utter confusion. “What is that supposed to mean?”
Sam’s mouth fell agape, absolutely stunned.  “Oh, honey. You two were the paragons of sexual tension. Anyone with eyes could see it plain as day. You should have seen all the confused looks I got from people when I told them you two weren’t dating.”
I light dusting of pink spread across Lena’s face, and she fondly smiled. “Paragons of sexual tension?” After a moment of consideration, she conceded, “Accurate.”
Sam let Lena stew in her embarrassment a few moments longer, taking great pleasure in watching her oldest friend squirm. Using her super-speed, she refilled their drinks, and, clearly out of patience, burst out, “So are you going to ask me, or what?” Lena titled her head questioningly. Sam sighed out of sheer frustration. “Don’t you want to know who won?!?”
Lena startled and nodded emphatically. “Yes, of course, yes. Please, tell me.”
“There were only three winners.  Eliza, Jess, and…me.” Sam smiled pompously while doing a celebratory jig.
Lena, looking completely unsurprised, grinned warmly. “Eliza…no shock there. That woman can read her daughters like an open book. Jess…well I guess you could say she had a front row seat from day one.” She paused as she reminisced. A tender smile spread across her face; she focused on Sam with a curious glint in her eyes. “So, how did you know?”
Sam, pretending to take offense, gasped. “Aside from years of watching you two longingly eye-fuck each other?”
Lena snorted into her glass as she tried to take a drink, inadvertently causing some of the liquid to splash on her face. A deep blush settled over her cheeks as she wiped at her now damp face. “Yes, aside from that,” she said through a coughing chuckle.
Sam’s grin at Lena’s antics was slowly replaced by a look of melancholy. She methodically swirled the contents of her tumbler, seemingly transfixed by it. “Honestly, everything came into focus while you two were fighting.” Lena abruptly stopped her efforts to dry her face, instead focusing on Sam with a forlorn look on her face. “That year you spent apart…I watched you both flounder; you were both just going through the motions…lost. Neither one of you was whole. As cliché as it sounds, you two really are stronger together; El Mayarah in the flesh.” Sam paused to take a drink. Lena’s eyes became glassy, a slight tremor in her hands barely visible. “When it happened, I remember thinking about everything you two had accomplished together: you sent the Daxamites packing, beat Reign and saved me, stopped Lex and Red Daughter from basically taking control of the country…and handled all the other little disasters in-between. When you two finally reconciled you were able to prevent Leviathan from taking over the world and then stopped Lex from killing two-thirds of the population on Earth; and that was before you two had had a chance to work through your shit.” Sam grew more passionate as she continued, “To this day, I firmly believe that if we would’ve beat your fuckhead brother before he trapped Kara in the Phantom Zone, you two would’ve been married by now.” Lena tilted her head and lightly shrugged, silently recognizing the possibility. “I felt the same way when we got her back from that hellhole, but then Nyxly was there and threw a wrench into everything; Lex rearing his ugly bald head again was just the cherry on top.”
Lena let out a frustrated sigh as she reflected on that tumultuous time in their lives. A modicum of tears rolled down her cheeks as her body reacted viscerally to the unpleasant memories.
“Shit, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to upset you…I promise there is a point to this walk down nightmare lane,” Sam said as she reached across the couch and placed her hand over Lena’s to reassure her; Lena lightly patted the top of Sam’s hand in acknowledgement of the tender gesture. “What I’m trying to point out is that the reason you two didn’t get together after you reconciled was not by choice. It wasn’t about missed opportunities; it was the fact that you two never got a chance to breathe long enough to explore how you felt about each other. I knew with absolute certainty that once things died down, you two would end up getting that opportunity. So, when Nyxly and Lex fucked-off to the Phantom Zone, I had the utmost faith that you two would be swapping spit, and other bodily fluids, in very short order,” Sam flashed a brilliant, mischievous smile. “Hence, why I took the under.”
Lena grinned through her tears, and squeezing Sam’s hand she quietly said, “Thank you for never losing faith in me…in us.”
Sam scooped Lena into a tight hug, her chin rested over Lena’s shoulder. “Oh, sweetie. I love you and Kara so much. All I’ve ever wanted for you two is to be happy…well, together, and happy.”
They squeezed each other tighter, giggling into each other’s shoulders.
“I think we need to switch to a lighter topic,” Sam said through a choked-up laugh.
They broke up their hug, both futilely trying to save their mascara as they wiped the tears from their eyes.  “I totally agree. Did you have something in mind?” Lena managed to sniffle out.
“Actually, I do.” There was a hint of nervousness in Sam’s voice. Lena picked up on it and noticed that her friend was fidgeting with her hands.
Lena scoffed, “Oh, Christ. Now what?”
Sam anxiously cleared her throat. “Weeelll, there might be one more wager that hasn’t been settled yet.” Sam did her best to avoid looking at Lena, instead focusing on her suddenly very interesting hands.
Lena’s eyebrow rose ever-so-slightly. “This should be good,” she deadpanned.
“So, after it was confirmed you two were officially dating, a second bet was made on who made the first move,” Sam said hesitantly.
Lena was a picture of stoicism. “I see. And what’s the pot on this one?”
“Forty-five thousand.”
Lena’s eyebrows shot up. “For fuck’s sake, Sam. It’s been a week since we told everyone!”
Sam embarrassedly smiled. “Yeah, a lot of people are trying to recoup their losses.”
“I feel like there’s a teachable moment regarding the evils of gambling somewhere in there, but…,” Lena drifted off, clearly indifferent to their plight.  She leveled an inquisitive look at Sam. “So, Mrs. Danvers, which pony did you back?”
Sam slammed back the remainder of her drink and placed the empty tumbler on the coffee table. She timidly met Lena’s eyes and weakly smiled. “Kara.”
Lena’s brows furrowed at Sam’s admission. She let her CFO suffer through a dramatically awkward silence before responding, “Et tu, Brute?”
Sam shrugged. “Lena, I mean this with all due respect, but you are the very definition of ‘useless lesbian’.”
“Useless bisexual,” Lena quickly corrected.
“Oh, please. Jack and James were total beards!” Sam cackled.
Lena’s eyes narrowed as she glared at Sam in reproach. “No comment,” she said sternly.
Sam was now laughing so hard her side hurt. Lena took a heavy swallow of her drink and regarded her friend with an icy stare.
Her impatience building, Lena opted to change the subject. “Speaking of James, I noticed he wasn’t on the list of participants.”
Sam took a minute to regain her composure and even out her breathing. “He felt it would be inappropriate to wager on when his ‘ex-girlfriends’ would hook-up.”
“What does he mean, ‘ex-girlfriends’? Kara never even went on a date with him. They kissed twice…the first time he was being controlled by Myriad.” Lena was clearly appalled.
A look of shock climbed across Sam’s face. “Shut the fuck up! I never knew that…oh my god, Alex doesn’t even know about that!”
“I can’t believe I slept with that narcissistic prick.” Lena snorted angrily at the memory.
Sam loudly clapped her hands, breaking Lena’s reverie. “Well, I’m glad we could clear that up. Now, fess up. Who jumped first?”
Lena remained silent and studied Sam for a moment, the CFO was practically bouncing in her seat in anticipation. After what seemed like an eternity (to Sam at least), Lena slammed back the remainder of her scotch and set the empty tumbler on the coffee table. A devious grin on her lips, Lena stood and began fastening the buttons on her jacket. “Thank you for the drink and for the conversation. It was rather stimulating.” Lena retrieved her discarded clutch from the table and moved to exit Sam’s office.
Sam quickly realized that Lena was going to leave her hanging and sprung to her feet. “Oh, hell no! You’re not flaking out on me now, Luthor!”
Lena didn’t slow her pace. “I’ll see you at Game Night on Friday. Don’t forget, you and Alex are on snack duty this week.”
Sam used her super-speed to position herself between Lena and her office door. “Please, Lena! Just tell me. Alex bet on you, so it doesn’t matter who made the first move, I win either way,” Sam grabbed Lena by the arms. “C’mon Lena, Alex and I could use the money to do that add-on to the house and take the trip to Aruba we’ve been talking about for years.”
“Oh please, you just got back from honeymooning on Argo.”
“Yeah, but that was four months ago…and Argo doesn’t have crystal blue waters…and sandy beaches…and clear, sunny skies…and…and drinks with little umbrellas in them…” Sam was pleading, well, more begging at this point.
Lena gave Sam a piteous smile, cupped Sam’s cheek, leaned in, and placed a chaste kiss on her cheek. “Love you, sweetie.” She separated from Sam’s grip and exited through the office door. Sam helplessly watched as Lena disappeared behind the shutting door.
“Fuck!” she bellowed into the empty office. Sam rushed over to her desk and retrieved her phone, quickly bringing up her wife’s contact.
MyBrownEyedGirl: The jig is up! Boss Lady was just here. She knows everything!
BigRed: Fuck! I knew Brainy shit the bed last night. What did you tell her?
MyBrownEyedGirl: EVERYTHING!!!
BigRed: Oh.

MyBrownEyedGirl: Typical Lena.

MyBrownEyedGirl: YUP

The Secret Life Of Lena Luthor
Supergirl. Lena Luthor x Reader!
Word Count: 2785.
Lena Luthor has a secret. Probably many of them, but there’s only one that bugs you so much.
Who are those friends of her? Why are they so tight that you feel like they are in some sort of cult? Why does it look like she would die for them? And how come they are always more important than you?
You see, the last one's been bothering you for a while now.
Some time last year.
The world is saved. Again. For the third time this month. And while Lena sits to celebrate with her friends/ teammates she is content. A kind of feeling she hasn’t experienced much before, but that’s been constant ever since the big fight. Ever since Lex is gone gone.
She looks at J’onn and M’gann reminiscing about something from their planet. Looks at Alex and Kelly swooning over something cute she is sure Esmé just did. Nia looks at Brainy as if he is the most interesting being and all of existence. All of them have somebody. Well, she looks at Kara alone. But Kara is never truly alone. She has Supergirl. All these people around her and the people she met in different universes.
But Lena? Outside of this room she barely has anyone. Sam, Ruby, Jess. She scrambles to find more names.
So Lena looks around, more certain than she’s ever been before. She needs someone. Someone outside this group of friends, so she can get back some sort of normality she most certainly lost since she discovered her witchy ancestry and joined the super friends for real.
And then Lena finds you.
You run through the door of the Lena Luthor Foundation, and since she wants to be more hands on with everything, Lena is right there to see it.
“Do you, um, take strays?”
“Strays, ma’am?” The receptionist asks, raising one perfect eyebrow at you. “You mean like, cats?”
“What? No! I mean me.” You smile widely. “I mean, do you take walk-ins? Like, can I just walk in and find myself a station and start working?”
“Oh. Ah.” She looks around for help. Unsure of what to tell you. And because Lena herself is around, she jumps in to help.
“Hi.” Lena shows you her hand. “Lena Luthor. How can I help you,” she looks at both of your hands. No ring. “Miss?”
“Y/N.” You introduce yourself, shaking her hand.
“You want to work on something?”
“Well, you see, I have this idea. It’s really bugging me and keeping me awake at night.” You point at your own face. “I’m sure you can tell. But I don’t have everything I need to work on it. It says online it’s what this foundation is for.”
“Well, we don’t work on everything. Our resources are vast but still limited. There’s a board. If you want to present your idea.” Lena suggests and you shake your head agreeing, then just like that you’re running out of there as fast as you came in. She looks back at the receptionist with a smile. “Strange little cat, that one.”
You don’t give her time to move on from you at all, when you run back in. A prototype in hand, and several loose papers on the other.
“Ok, I’m ready.” You smile at her and she furrows her brows.
“Oh, I didn’t mean right now.”
“Please, ma’am. I need to sleep.” And to demonstrate, only one of your eyes blink. She seems to take pity on you.
“Well then, come in. Let’s see what I can do for you. And please, call me Lena.”
And what she can do for you, is help you with every little thing you need help with. And what you can do for her, is help her see there’s more to life than work and a few friends.
Present days.
“You’re running off.” You mumble. Eyes still shut, voice thick with sleep.
“Emergency. Sorry, my love.” You hear shuffling so you know she is getting ready to run off to her super secret, super important duties.
“What is it this time?” You finally open your eyes and watch her putting her clothes back on. “Kara got stuck on a tree and you have to go get her down?”
“Oh no, my pretty stray cat. I only climb trees to save your pretty butt.” She jokes, coming closer to kiss your lips.
“Lena.” You beg when she moves away from you. “Please stay. Please wake up with me. Please let me make you eggs and a strong coffee.”
“That would be lovely.” You open your mouth to repeat, stay. But she knows it’s coming, so she speaks before you. “Can’t today. Rain check?”
You press your lips together, annoyed at her way to deal with this. But she doesn’t notice, because she’s already running out the door one shoe on, the other one still in hand.
“Have a great day, Lena.”
You don’t want to be jealous of Kara. You’re not even the jealous type. But this whole ‘my friends call and I run out the door’ is not working anymore. Not that it ever did. But recently this has been bugging you extra hard.
And when things bug you this much, you can’t simply forget that easily. You can't even sleep on it.
"Heeey," Lena grabs the bags from your hands, giving you a quick kiss on your way inside. "glad you came, I felt bad leaving you this morning."
"Yeah." You place the rest of the bags on top of the counter. "Maybe we should talk about that."
"Definitely. But after a nice dinner, maybe?" She gives you a little smile, and you're quick to accept.
The talk doesn't come right after dinner, when Lena climbs on your lap and you two start a heavy make out session, you decide it is better to wait a little.
"Shit. Fuck." Lena says out of breath, parting your lips. You look down at your hands still on her waist.
"What? Already?"
"No, not that." Lena laughs, and you notice something vibrating in her pants.
"Oh," You raise your eyebrows playfully. "Someone's packing."
Lena takes her phone out of her pocket, and you roll your eyes at it. She reads the name, and starts apologizing right away. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry." She gets up looking at the phone.
"Are you serious?" You ask, but she is already answering her phone after mouthing one more 'sorry'.
"Kara, I'm in the middle of something really important. This better be a 10 or higher." She paces around the room and you watch her from your place on the couch. "Shit, ok. Ask Supergirl to come pick me up. Yeah, ok. See you soon."
Lena looks at you with pleading eyes, and you look up trying to hold the tears and the anger inside you. "Darling, I'm really sorry, but it's an –"
"Emergency." You complete her sentence and her face drops, looking at you.
"I'm sorry, I'm truly sorry. I know I did the exact same thing this morning…"
"This morning? Lena! You've been running off every time Kara called you ever since I've met you! I don't get it. What's up with all these emergencies? Why is Kara always more important than us?"
Supergirl's feet touch on the balcony and you hear a light tap on the balcony door. She looks embarrassed, like she heard more than she wanted to. She waves lightly and points to the city with her head, so Lena knows it's time to go.
"I promise I'll tell you everything, but I really have to go now."
“If you leave right now, you won’t find me here when you get back.”
“No, please Y/N. Please wait. I’ll tell you everything when I get home, I promise. Please stay, eat dessert, and make yourself at home. I promise I’ll be back soon.”
So you wait. An hour. Two hours. Three hours later and you’ve seen enough of television, eaten enough of her food and got tired of wasting everyone's time. It is clear Lena doesn't take you seriously and that you'll never be her first priority. So you leave.
It's only in the morning when you grab your phone to notice the missing calls and texts from your… girlfriend? Ex? You haven't decided yet. But if you're being honest things aren't looking too hot for her.
Lena has helped you many times before. You have no problem admitting you are where you are right now because of her. If your invention hadn't played out, you wouldn't have found a new job and you wouldn't be working on something you are very passionate about.
But she means more than that to you. With Lena you can talk about anything. You can be your quirky self without any judgements. In fact, you always thought she seemed to appreciate it. Now, you're not so sure.
She's always hiding something. Always running off. One phone call and she is gone. No time to even tell you what she is running towards. You feel like you're dating someone who has a secret life. And you can't help but think you're the secret part.
You're still finding energy to answer her latest text, when you hear the doorbell. You force yourself out of bed, and open the door to see Lena right on the other side.
You furrow your brows, "What are you wearing?"
Lena stares down at her outfit, a large hoodie and sweatpants. "I was fairly uncomfortable in my jeans and so Kara let me borrow something." She looks at the hem of the pants. "She is a lot taller."
"Glad you came to my house wearing some other girl's clothes." You make space for her, because you know she is not leaving and you don't want to have this conversation out in the open.
"It's Kara's." She justifies.
"Yeah, and who's Kara, exactly? Is she just your best friend? Is she your lover? Your dealer? Your boss? Why are you always running out the door when she calls?"
"Those are fair questions. Well, not the dealer and lover part. But I guess I should explain why I always go when she calls.”
You look at your coffee machine. It's too early for this conversation. For the truths you'll inevitably have to listen.
"Coffee?" You ask her, but it's mostly because you need it so badly.
"I'd die for a cup."
You set up the coffee machine while Lena makes her way to the other side of the counter, sitting on one of the high stools to look at you.
"I'm sorry I didn't come back home sooner." Lena starts, and you sigh.
"I stood there like a ghost and I don't even know why."
"I don't want to run off every time, it's just – Sometimes I'm the only one who can help so they call me." You stand there waiting for more, for an explanation. "I told Kara to only call me for real emergencies from now on."
"You know, you said a bunch of stuff, but you still haven't told me what kind of emergencies they need you for."
You're not stupid, it's not like you haven't put two and two together. Supergirl shows up to pick up Lena right after Kara calls for an emergency? Yeah, like they have Supergirl on their speed dial so she can offer Lift services when one of them needs it. It's obvious Lena is a part of a group that helps National City or whatever. It was actually kind of obvious because every time she ran off for an 'emergency', you only had to turn on the news to see something crazy happening in town.
"I'm a part of the Superfriends." She bites her lower lip when you don't show any real reaction. "It's supposed to be a secret."
"Lena, Supergirl showed up at your house yesterday to give you a ride. It wasn't a well-kept secret, anyways."
"Wait, so. You knew?" Lena's voice comes out so shocked it's in a high pitch you have never heard before.
"Had my suspicions, sure." The conversation is briefly put to a stop while you pour coffee for both of you, but even before you have your first sip, Lena speaks.
"I don't understand why you are mad at me then. If you knew all along what I was doing, how could you be mad? How could you think Kara is something other than my friend?"
"Well, first of all, I had my suspicions, but not convictions because you never told me anything so I could've been completely off. And second of all, I didn't know all along. I had to go slowly piecing it together by myself because you wouldn't come out and be honest with me. And third, and most importantly, how can I not be mad when you left me high and dry at your place last night and ran off with Kara again?"
"Nia was hurt! I had to go help out. How could I not have run out?"
"That's not what I'm saying. You don't get it, do you?" She doesn't. She looks at you so damn lost you know for sure she doesn't get it at all. "I'm not telling you shouldn't go help your friends. I'm asking you to just tell me about it. Don't tell me that you have to go because you have an emergency. Tell me Nia is hurt and I will tell you to go help her, I'll offer you my help. I not only won't be upset about you leaving, but I'll admire you even more."
You round the counter, looking at her with doe-eyes.
"I'm tired of this double-life. It's like you're two different people. I – I don't know what to tell you, I just feel like I'm dating a CIA agent who's been lying to me about who she is. And it sucks."
Lena blinks. "I know." Because she didn't even realize what she was doing in the first place, but now that you have laid all on the table for her, it makes more sense than ever. She felt the same thing before and she can't believe she's been doing the same thing. "God, I know how you feel. And I'm sorry I kept you in the dark. You have every reason to be upset. Please forgive me. I promise I will be completely honest from now on."
"That's all I'm asking."
"Well," Lena looks at your coffee mug to see you didn't have much of it. "Why don't you drink some more? I feel like you'd have to be pretty awake for what I have to say next."
"Oh…kay?" You gulp on your coffee and look at her wide-eyed.
"Well, it's complicated. But, more than a year ago, before we met, I set out to find more things about my mother." Lena says and you agree with your head, because she has told you before all of her story and the fact that she lost her mom when she was younger. "It turns out that my mother was a witch."
"Huh?"
She takes a deep breath. "And so am I."
"You're a what, now?"
"You wanted the whole truth." Lena smiles sheepish and you furrow your brows hard at your new discovery. Yep, you didn't see this one coming. Honestly, if she had told you Kara was Supergirl, you would've been a lot less surprised.
"I did, didn't I?" It's a lot to process, but you take one good look at Lena and you know it took everything in her to tell you this, and so, even though you don't truly understand what it means and what she does exactly, you know she needs support right now. "So my girlfriend is a witch and a genius and she is part of the Superfriends, and helps out with saving the world and stuff?"
"I guess you could put it like that." She says, tentatively.
"You're awesome, Lena. I'm happy you told me everything. It helps me understand you a lot better, and it only makes me love you more."
Lena's eyebrows raise and she can't help her surprised face, "You love me?"
"Yeah, I do. I love you."
"I love you too, my little stray cat."
You feel your worries melt away in the kiss and you're happy Lena trusts you enough to tell you about this other part of her life. It also feels good to know her secret and where she runs off to everytime. Plus, how did you get so lucky? She's hot, she's smart, she's a goddamn goddess and she also saves the world? She is more than you could ever dream, and you’re so glad she is yours.

A New Beginning: A Supergirl 6x20 Re-Write
Chapter One: Back to Reality
There was definitely a new air about National City that night, and there was definitely a new air about Kara Danvers as well. Sitting in her chair in the main meeting area of the CatCo bullpen, wearing a red and cream tartan suit with her hair perfectly blown out; almost as if she flew there in a rush so she wouldn’t be late.
Thanks to a very important person at her sister’s wedding, who can only be described as the living embodiment of regality with a soft marshmallow center, and a droning force in short but fun-sized packed persona over the phone, she decided that this interview was not only the right time to tell the City she called home for years who she was, but all to breathe. To become herself. Her WHOLE self.
“Are you sure you want to do this Kiera?” The incomparable Cat Grant almost floated in to do this interview, she was that mystical and ethereal. “Once you do this, your life will be changed, and the horrid, ridiculous guest appearances start.”
“I’m sure. This is exactly what I need to do.” Kara takes a relaxing deep breath to calm her nerves.
“And none of your family knows you’re doing this?” Cat’s eyebrow makes an ever present curious arch.
“Nope…Though this would be a good surprise.” A slightly nervous, but at peace chuckle was the clear indicator that she was ready.
“Well then…” Cat gave her famous, let’s get down to business smirk. “Let’s make history.”
*The Lena Luthor Foundation--Head Office*
Catching up on some paperwork, Lena had lost track of time.
“Knock knock.” A rap on the door frame from Andrea had greeted her. “Figured you could use the company and pick me up.”
“Andrea.” A smile brighter than Rao itself was the indicator that she needed a break. “You’re a lifesaver. And thank you. I lost track of time, I actually forgot to eat.”
“Well, when Kara is off changing the world in her new Girl Boss position, someone needs to be there as back up.” Andrea began to unpack a bag of Big Belly Burger, and turn on the tv in Lena’s office. “So, where is Kara exactly? Didn’t you tell me she would be here too?”
“She was, but she had something come up with Cat about changing the layout of their next issue. And something that big, I wouldn’t keep her from that. I told her she could simply make up to me at home.” Hiding her smirk when she said that was not even going to happen.
“I bet.” A chuckle was bound to happen. “I’m happy for you, Lena. Ever since our last catch up after Alex and Kelly’s wedding, it seems like you and Kara are closer than ever.” Andrea was genuinely happy for her friend.
But what she didn’t know was that there was indeed a moment between her and Kara at the wedding. However, just as she was about to say those three words, Nia had called them to wave goodbye to the blushing brides.
“We are. It feels very cathartic that we can just be ourselves with each other. And after all of that time I spent being angry at her for simply…” She definitely couldn’t reveal Kara’s secret. “Keeping a family secret to herself, I had time to think about all of that.” Lena shrugged as she ate.
*The Suburbs of National City*
Family Movie Night was in full swing at the Danvers-Olsen household. Tonight’s plans: Chocolate Drizzle Popcorn, A giant order of potstickers no one had to fight over because Kara wasn’t there to inhale them like a Hoover vacuum, and a big pitcher of lemonade with “special additions” for the adults.
“Alex, hurry up! The movie is starting.” Kelly hollered from the living room
“I’m coming.” She warmly chuckled, followed by a delightful peck on the lips and greeted Kelly upon her return. “Movie nights require extra blankets.” Alex lays one over Kelly and Esme, who was practically shoveling the popcorn by the handful.
“And I feel honored to have finally made a movie night. It’s been a while since I’ve visited. The Tower has kept me rather busy. With you ladies enjoying your time off, and Kara being a big shot with Cat, Brainy, Nia and M’Gann are helping as much as they can.” J’onn grinned warmly as he leaned back in his armchair.
“And tell M’Gann we said thank you for her gift. That Martian salt lamp, I’ll admit, was a little…odd. But the living room was the perfect place for it.” Alex quickly retorts.
“Sssssh.” Esme takes a break from chewing. “You guys are going to miss the best part.” She jokingly glares at them with her crystalline amber-brown eyes.
“It’s the beginning.” Kelly could help but laugh at her daughter’s reaction.
“Exactly. Everything you need to know is in the beginning and I don't want to miss a thing.” She goes right back to devouring her popcorn, eyes practically glued to the TV.
All three adults exchange a glance that read “I swear she’s smarter than all of us.”
“She gets that from you.” Kelly smirked, mouthing to Alex, before turning to the screen herself.
While watching, Alex just took in her surroundings for a moment. For all her life, she had dreamed of having a family of her own. Of having a partner that would love her regardless, good times and bad. Pinching herself to check if it was real was no longer necessary. Her dream had finally come true. With a content exhale, she wrapped her arm around Kelly, pulling her close to snuggle under their blanket.
*CatCo Bullpen*
“Thirty seconds to air, Miss Grant.” A camera assistant reminds them as the equipment setup is finished.
“Are you ready to make history?” Cat smirked.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” Kara took a deep breath, closing her eyes just for a moment. In that moment, all of that conflicting weight about having to choose between Supergirl, and Kara Danvers…was gone. Yes, she still had the trauma she never really dealt with, but finding a therapist would be tomorrow’s plan. Right now, she wanted to show those little girls out there who look up to her, that you can have as many sides to you as you want.
With a definitive and proud nod to the camera person, the red light turns on.
“Hello National City. You know her as Kara Danvers, CatCo’s Ace reporter and NEW Editor In Chief. But tonight, it is my great honor to introduce to you…Supergirl.”
As she was saying those words, trying to remain as professional as possible, she could feel her sense of pride grow. Cat had known Kara since the start. Yes, she was mean and hostile. But it was only because she wanted Kara to see her full potential, and as soon as she figured out that Kara and Supergirl were one in the same, she pushed Kara harder. She knew the doubts were still there. Hence the blunt, but caring pep talk she had given her over the phone. Cat always knew how great Kara’s value was. Being able to not only break the story about Supergirl, but to be able to interview her protege in the end…She hadn’t had too many “proud mom” moments in her life, but seeing the person Kara had become over the years right in front of her; The growth she could see from Kara’s smile alone, it was certainly just that.
And even though Cat knew her identity for years, hearing her mentor say it, seeing her mentor smile while saying it, it took all of her willpower to not tear up. In that presence space, Kara and Supergirl were whole.
*The Lena Luthor Foundation--Head Office*
Andrea had nearly had her milkshake come out of her nose watching the TV. “Wait, you’re telling me…” Her Sage/Mint Green eyes wider than usual, she had to set down her dinner. “All of those times. The time Supergirl saved me when Nxly nearly threw me up against my back office wall, that weird white tiger incident…”
Lena simply sat there, stifling a chuckle while nodding. “Yeah. It’s a lot. But it was for Kara to tell you herself, and not me.”
Rubbing her face as if that would help the news process faster, Andrea leaned back in her office chair getting pained realization across her face. “Kara was missing for those weeks. Her hesitancy to write about the Phantoms. Her being scrambled…oh my god.”
“Andrea, it's okay.” Lena reaches for her friend’s hand to assure her.
“It’s not Lena.” Shaking her head, refusing to act like she was nice to Kara. “I was nothing but rude to Kara. I shot down every idea, criticized her work when it was perfectly fine. I couldn’t even pick up on the fact that the Phantom situation probably caused her even more trauma after I forced her to write about it.”
“That’s an understatement.” Lena whispers under her breath.
“Even sending William to flat out snoop on her and the Super Friends was a dumb move. It…” Andrea was flashing back to that video.
“Don’t even go there. It wasn’t your fault. As nice a guy as he was, he could’ve prevented his own death. Sending that video to guilt trip you was a shite move on his part.” That was one thing that made Lena angry about that situation: there was an easy solution, but someone with a small brain decided to have the last word.
“I know.” Giving a somewhat sad smile, Andrea was grateful for Lena’s assurance and advice. “And Hopefully opening a school in his honor, as well as an award, is the first step to getting future Kara Danvers’, Nia Nal’s and William Dey’s pursuing the truth.” Looking at the clock. “Well, I should go. Tell Kara I said hi.” She gives Lena a much needed hug, and turns on her heel.
“I will Andrea. Drive safe.” As soon as she left, she practically lunged for her phone.
“Two things: That suit, The Cher Clueless vibes REALLY suit you ;). And when you get home…we need to talk.”
With an effervescent smirk, her own heart growing warmer by the second, Lena sat back in her office chair, and watched the rest of the interview with Kara and Cat. She had always been proud of Kara; who wouldn’t of their own best friends accomplishments? But with every word Kara spoke, Lena could visibly see how much her words to Kara at Alex’s wedding helped.
“My girlfriend is HOT.” She chuckled to herself.
*The Suburbs of National City*
A silence had fallen in the Danvers-Olsen household. While J’onn, Kelly and Alex were a mixture of shock and pride, Alex especially. There was her baby sister, at peace with who she is on TV, being interviewed by the person who had seen her grow just as much. Her eyes were glassy with tears, causing her vision to slightly blur. Despite the stinging in her corneas, a smile as big as the milky way galaxy was plastered right across her face.
“Aunt Kara!” Esme on the other hand, practically flew off the couch to sit closer to the TV so she could watch her aunt in all her glory.
The look she had on her face was priceless, magnified by one hundred.
“Well, if that isn’t the cutest thing on this planet.” Kelly grinned, watching Esme. “I don’t think I’ve seen Esme with this much wonder before.”
“Wouldn’t you if your Aunt was a superhero?” J’onn beamed, listening to the interview questions. “Even being interviewed, she has a gift with words.”
“I’m not surprised. If there was one subject she was good at in high school, it was creative writing.” Alex quickly dabbed her eyes so she could have a clearer view while watching. “I always thought Kara would do something like this, but just print. I had no idea that she was going to let Cat interview her.”
“It’s pretty full circle if you think about it. That one issue of CatCo you showed me, Cat was the one to break the story. I think it’s poetic that Cat is the one to finally get Kara to open up about being Supergirl.” Wise as ever, Kelly too had a twinkle of happiness watching.
“But that would mean…” Alex’s cogs were turning. “Oh…wow. That means Cat has always known too.”
“Aunt Kara really needed a different disguise.” Esme laughed at her own joke.
“Yeah…glasses were definitely not the best idea.” Alex responded with a resounding agreement.
“Can we go see Aunt Kara tomorrow to tell her we saw the interview?” Esme turns to all three of them, puppy dog eyes turned all the way up to 11.
“She mastered that quickly.” J’onn smirked at her reaction, watching Alex and Kelly slowly but surely cave.
“If she’s not too busy with work?” Alex turned to Kelly for the assist.
“I think your Aunt Kara would love that surprise.” Kelly booped her precious little button nose.
“Yay!” Esme cheered. “I’m going to go draw a picture of her to give it to her tomorrow before bed.” She takes off running to her room.
“I will take that as my cue that movie night is over.” J’onn surges from his chair to give the girls each a hug.
“Thanks again for coming, J’onn. Esme wouldn’t let up about inviting you to movie night.” Kelly jokes, returning his sentiment.
“She really does have everyone wrapped around her finger.” He fondly jokes right back.
“I wouldn't have it any other way.” Alex gives him a bear hug with a pleased feeling of content. Both she and Kelly waved goodbye, then began to pick up the aftermath of snacks.
“So, how are you feeling?” Kelly could always tell when something was on Alex’s mind.
“Like someone just shook the emotional magic eight ball that was inside me, and asked “Is Alex going to cry?” Answer: Without question.” Alex’s sense of humor always somehow made her feel less emotional in order to get herself to stop crying. “Though, I’m shocked Kara didn’t text, or reveal anything about this.”
“Maybe that was the point of the surprise. All of those pep talks you’ve given her over the years, plus Lena, and whatever blunt and slight scary pep talk Cat gave her…was the push she needed to do this.” Kelly came up behind Alex to wrap her arms around her waist, resting her chin on her shoulder. “It’s nice to see your sister be her authentic self.”
“You’re right.” Grinning, Alex spun to meet Kelly’s luminous brown eyes. “And between you and I, I think Lena did most of the pushing to get her to this point. Now if she’d only just remove those blinders of hers.”
“You’re bad.” Kelly teased before leaning in to meet Alex’s lips the rest of the way.
“Cue the song Bad to the Bone.” Alex, quite pleased with herself, closes the gap. “Come on, let’s go see how our little Bob Ross is doing on her masterpiece.”
Hand in hand, they stood watching Esme. Swelling with a sense of home and completeness, that couldn’t help but turn to mush watching their daughter reach for color after color as she drew Kara on TV. To them, this was their definition of perfect.
*CatCo Bullpen*
“Thank you, Miss Grant. This is exactly what I needed.” With a loud exhale, Kara felt freer than she had ever felt in her entire life.
“I should be the one thanking you, Kiera.” Cat admits. “These next words I’m about to stay within this bullpen…” She then turns to give the iciest glare to the camera operators. And just like that, as if by magic they disappeared. “I may be snarky, callus and rude…” Immediately, her finger goes up to ward off any sarcastic comments that would come out of Kara’s mouth. “But I really do care. Those Groucho Marx glasses of yours, you didn’t need them. That disguise worked about as well as the superhero’s first suit in a pilot episode on the CW. I already knew you were special. Whether it be your writing, or how you interact with people. As far as I'm concerned, you were Supergirl in the office. Even then, I knew you were giving people a sense of Hope. Being able to do this here, with you…Not only has it been the highlight of my entire career, it is the moment I am most proud of.”
“I don’t --I…” Kara quickly pinched her tear ducts to stop herself from crying before giving a reserved, but very big hug. “Thank you.” She shakes her feelings away, taking a step back.
“You’re welcome.” Cat didn’t let many people hug her; Kara was one of those lucky few. “Now you better run along to your girlfriend, because I’m sure she wants to see you after this momentous occasion.”
“How did you?!” Kara’s face instantly goes Hubba Bubba pink.
“Oh please, it's about as obvious as the beginning of every Christmas and Valentine’s Day movie on the Hallmark Channel. Go.” Cat shooed her as she packed up her stuff.
A booming woosh was all that was heard as Kara left. She knew she had to figure out what the second half of Lena's text meant. Did she forget something? Was she in trouble for eating the last piece of cheesecake? Getting an I’m Sorry as a just in case was her best bet.
Here it is. My very first chapter of my Supergirl fanfic. I’m super nervous about sharing, but please let me know what you think in the comments, and any KIND constructive criticism you have as well.

Luthor & Lane
Staring at the text like it offended her, Lena wonders why she agreed to meet. She is already unsure about this trip to Metropolis, even if it is for The Lena Luthor Foundation. Now she has the added stress of meeting up with Lucy Lane. Of course they’ve met before. In fact, they met long before she met Kara. Back when Lex and Clark were best friends, the three of them would hang out with the Lane sisters. Being so much younger than everyone else, Lena and Lucy were basically forced together while their older siblings hung out.
So yes, she’s known the younger Lane for a long time. Known of her, really. They were more acquaintances than anything else, but familiar enough with each other that they were able to spend time together without too much awkwardness. Although, it has been years since they’ve seen each other. Well, until Lucy came back to National City to check on Kara after her return from the Phantom Zone.
So here she is, landing at the Metropolis airport, her first visit in years. She actually has plans to meet the younger Lane around 7 at a bar for drinks. After Kara’s return as well as her own journey to Newfoundland in exploration of her magical ancestry, Lena's been pushing herself to try new things, to step outside her comfort zone. And since making friends has never really been her forte, she agrees to hang out with Lucy. Alone. Without her Kryptonian buffer. She really wasn’t kidding all those years ago when she told Kara that the blonde was her only friend in National City. What she didn’t say at the time is that the blonde was her only friend period. Which means, this is definitely outside her comfort zone.
Her little hodge podge family, the one that means more to her than anything in the universe, has been encouraging her to meet new people. To just be herself. She’s grateful for them and their confidence in her, truly, but there’s so much history between the Luthors and Lanes. At this point, she’s pretty sure meeting a perfect stranger in a bar would make her less nervous. What could the two of them possibly have in common? Sure, they both dated James and they’re both friends with Kara, but will that be enough to carry a conversation?
Come on, Luthor. You stare down misogynistic old men all the time, Lucy Lane is a tiny, petite, very attractive woman. Okay, slow your tragically gay horses, Lena. Fuck. Now you’re having a full-blown conversation with yourself. Maybe insanity is a family trait.
She sighs. She seriously needs to stop talking to herself, even if it is only in her head and not aloud. Her eyes focus on the street outside the airport, a sleek black town car awaiting her at the curb. She slides into the back seat after passing her luggage off to the smiling man standing by the open door. The driver is familiar, having worked for the Luthors for years.
“Good evening, Hector. It’s been a while.” Lena smiles, and makes eye contact through the rearview mirror as he gets settled. “I’ll be staying at the penthouse and not the manor.” She maintains eye contact and Hector prepares to pull into traffic. “How’re Donovan and the kids?”
Hector returns the smile and fills Lena in on his little family as they make their way through the Metropolis streets. By the time they arrive at the penthouse, she’s heard all about the twins and their new hobbies. She grabs her bags and makes her way inside, taking the private elevator to a place that hasn’t been home to her in over 6 years.
As she opens the door, she is grateful she had the staff that maintains the place air it out and restock everything for her short stay. It’s stifling enough as it is without the air being stale as well. Stepping inside the sterile place is a stark reminder that National City really has truly become her home. Glancing at her watch, she realizes there’s only an hour left before she has to meet Lucy. She heads to the bedroom and ensuite to freshen up, her stomach still nervously churning as she desperately hopes the night goes smoothly.
The walk to the bar was thankfully short. It’s one of the reasons she chose the place, it’s within walking distance of her penthouse and they stock her favorite top shelf scotch. The green-eyed brunette isn’t hard to spot as Lena walks inside and makes her way to the bar. They make eye contact and smile in acknowledgement when Lena sits down.
“Long time, no-see, Luthor.” Lucy grins, casually looking her up and down. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in anything so casual. Always suits or pencil skirts. You look good.”
Lena does her best to school her features, the blatant compliment catching her off guard. “Appreciate it, Lane. You look good as well. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so relaxed.” She grins and quickly orders a double scotch. “Metropolis must be treating you well.”
They ease into small talk, Lucy filling her in on what’s going on in her life, how things are with Clark, Lois, and Jon, and her decision to leave the military to practice law privately. In turn, Lena fills her in on renaming L-Corp again, naming Sam as the new CEO, and starting The Lena Luthor Foundation. The conversation is simple and flows easily when they’re talking about things that aren’t too personal. When they stick to things that are either public or common knowledge, Lena knows how to handle it. It’s when things start venturing into the more personal and private aspects of her life that she starts to squirm a little.
“So, you dating anybody, Luthor?” Lucy asks, a knowing smirk on her face as she sips the brown liquid in her glass. “The last person I heard about was James and that’s been three plus years ago now, right?” She sits her glass down and leans back, eyeing the obviously nervous woman across from her.
She’s gone toe-to-toe with the older Lane sister on several occasions, that is miles worse than having a simple conversation about dating. Isn’t it? Lena clears her throat and rolls her eyes, refusing to let Lucy see her squirm. “I haven’t really had time to date anyone since James and I split. End of the world, the multiverse collapse, and evil, insane older brothers with mommy issues tend to take precedence.” She takes a long swallow from her glass, mossy green eyes observing the smaller woman. “What about you, Lane? Find anyone to keep you busy between discharges and trials?”
Lucy chuckles, leaning forward, placing her forearms on the bar and wrapping both hands around her glass. “I’ve dated here and there. More so just to scratch that periodic itch than looking for a relationship.” Inquisitive green eyes bouncing between Lena’s own. “How’s Kara doing?”
The emphasis on the blonde’s name doesn’t go unnoticed.
A dark, perfectly manicured brow arches as her head tilts. “She’s been doing a lot better the past couple of weeks. I’m pretty sure you know that since she told me that you've texted at least once a week since she got back.” Her eyes narrow as she watches a mischievous glint shine in Lucy’s eyes. “What are you getting at, Lane?”
“I’m not getting at anything, Luthor!” A shit-eating grin crawls across her face and she orders them another round of drinks. “She talks about you a lot. Even in text. If I didn’t know the situation the way I do, I’d think you two were dating.” Her smile grows bigger as the bartender drops their drinks on the dark wood in front of them.
Lena’s not sure what happens first, the sputtering noise that spills from her lips or almost knocking her fresh glass of scotch over. Regardless, she’s momentarily stunned into a mouth-gaping, flustered mess. “Wha–why wou–You.” She fumbles incoherently, letting a frustrated groan escape before she can catch it. She sighs and shakes her head, still trying to figure out how she’s going to respond. She settles on the usual phrase. “Kara and I are just friends. You’ve been around us enough to see that, Lucy.”
Lucy laughs, a full-blown belly laugh before she seems to collect herself to down the last of her second serving of whiskey. “Oh, I’ve definitely seen the two of you together enough to know there’s more to it.” She motions to the bartender for another round for the pair. “I have also known Kara long enough to know that she is the most oblivious being on this planet and probably several others, if I’m being honest.”
Lena polishes off the last sip of her second round as the third is being deposited in front of her. She smiles and nods her head in agreement before raising her glass to Lucy’s. They clink them together as they both chuckle before savoring the flavor of the expensive alcohol. “She is pretty oblivious, huh? An adorably oblivious puppy.” Raven colored locks fall into her face as she tilts her head in thought. “I suppose it isn’t really her fault. Human customs and norms must be so odd to her, even after all these years. Social cues aren’t easy to master, I should know.”
“Yeah, I talked to Clark about it once. She still struggles with social cues and thinks people are just really nice when they’re flirting.” Lucy grins, throwing a wink at Lena. “And don’t get me started on her secret identity. She genuinely thinks she’s good at hiding it. I mean, come on! Glasses and a ponytail?!” She scoffs, downing another large gulp of the smooth golden liquid.
“Right?!” Lena exclaims. “She’s such a terrible liar and her excuses for disappearing for super emergencies? I mean, come on!” She rolls her eyes and smirks. “One time, she told me that she flew to my office on a bus. On a bus, Lucy.”
They both laugh heartily, tears forming at the edges of their eyes. Each of them subtly glancing at the other, refusing to acknowledge the fact that they were both duped by the glasses and ponytail they willingly scoffed at seconds prior. Nope, that would require the two ultra-competitive type-A personalities to admit to being fooled by the adorkable superhero.
They finish drink number three, both definitely feeling the effects of the alcohol pulsing in their bloodstream. Lucy gives the bartender a crooked grin, her eyes half-lidded and glassy as she asks for another round. While they wait for the next round to land in front of them, an idea pops into Lucy’s head. She decides they should move to the far corner of the bar where the dart boards and pool tables reside.
She nods her head in confirmation to herself before speaking. “Come on, Luthor. We have to play pool and darts, we’re at a bar.” She sloppily points in the direction of the games in question, a cocksure smile on her face. “I bet I beat you in both. What do you want to wager?”
The comment stokes Lena’s competitive side. She lifts a questioning brow, giving her best boss bitch glare, topped off with her cockiest smirk. “Oh you’re on, Lane. You’re going down.” They head toward the dart boards first. Lena’s never in her life thrown a dart at anything nor does she know how to play the game, but she’ll be damned if she backs down from a challenge. “What are the terms of this little wager?” She’s decidedly over confident in her abilities at the moment, but backing down is not an option. She is a Luthor after all. A good competition is fun, right? Especially when she’s feeling this thoroughly relaxed, nevermind that she’s essentially a drink away from staggeringly inebriated.
“Let’s see…” Lucy says as she tries to tap her fingers on her chin, but ends up practically picking her nose instead. Looking at her hand as if it offended her, she shakes her head and locks eyes with Lena. “If I win, you have to tell Kara you have the hots for her.” Lucy giggles as she watches the gorgeous onyx haired woman beside her blink owlishly while inelegantly fish mouthing. For a second, she thinks she might have broken the genius woman. It makes her fully burst into a bellowing laugh.
Before Lena can respond, round number four is dropped in front of them. Lucy snatches hers up and unsteadily stands from her bar stool. She pauses to glance over her shoulder and continues laughing as Lena stands frozen, mouth still gaping wide. Eventually, the genius CEO reanimates and follows behind her.
They make their way over to the dart boards first. The brunette gathers the darts, Lucy taking the red ones and Lena the black. Seeming to sense that Lena either hasn’t ever played or isn’t familiar with the game, Lucy takes the lead. After watching Lucy throw her first few darts, Lena realizes her background in physics should help her immensely. She smirks.
Turns out, her less than sober demeanor doesn’t do her any favors. To say that Lena is bad at darts would be a gross understatement. She’s horrendously terrible and Lucy ends up kicking her ass, gloating all the way to the pool tables.
“You truly suck at darts, Luthor. I’m actually impressed at how bad you are.” She chuckles and shakes her head. “We never discussed your terms for winning our little wager, but I guess it doesn’t matter now, huh?” She staggers a little as they reach the first open pool table, leaning against it for support.
Lena sighs, perching next to the shorter woman, leaning against the felt edge of the table. “We could sweeten the wager. If I beat you in a game of pool, you release me from the obligations of the dart bet.” She grins, thinking herself pretty clever at coming up with that little nugget. Her thoughts are a bit fuzzy from all of the alcohol still swimming in her veins. “What do you want for winning this round, Lane?”
Lucy pauses, her head slowly turns toward Lena and a truly devilish grin stretches across her face. “Easy. The obligations of the dart bet stand, you still have to fess up and admit that you’re in love with the all too cute super-puppy. However, if I win at least two out of three games of pool, you have to call her and ask her to dinner while you’re here in Metropolis. On. A. Date.” She punctuates each of the last words by poking Lena in the shoulder. “I’m sure you have a chef or something at that fancy penthouse of yours. That is acceptable, but you have to confess your feelings over dinner.”
Lena is speechless. She’s at a disadvantage. Again. She’s never played pool either. She’s watched Alex and some of the other Superfriends play at Al’s, but she’s never joined. Sure, she gets the concept and she can figure out the math of it all, but she has no clue how to actually play it. Add the fact that she is without a doubt quite drunk at the moment, she knows she can’t win. At this point, she’s fucked and not in a good way.
“So, if I manage to win, you drop the bets altogether, but if you win, you’re basically doubling down?” Lena raises her signature brow, hoping it is as menacing as it usually is, though she’s pretty sure she looks like a confused toddler trying to decipher a new word. “You drive a hard bargain, Lane. I respect your style.”
They both eye each other and then seem to come to an agreement as they reach their hands out and shake on it.
Initially her anxiety plays heavily into her seemingly hopeless foray into bar games, but it turns out Lena actually isn’t horrible at pool. The first game is a little shaky as she gets used to the rules and the feel of the cue stick in her hands, but she manages to hold her own. She still loses, but it is closer than either of them anticipated.
The second game, she is feeling a bit more confident and ends up just barely squeaking out a win, much to the dismay of the younger Lane. They stare at each other across the table as Lucy sets everything up for their final game. It’s at that moment that Lena realizes that as much as she wants to win, she also kind of hopes she loses. If nothing else, it gives her the catalyst she’s needed to finally tell Kara how she feels. It’s a revelation that startles her at the same time it makes her giddy.
When she focuses back on the moment again, Lucy is staring at her, head tilted and an amused look on her face. “What’s going on in that genius brain of yours, Luthor? From the look on your face, you just had a major revelation about something or the scotch is finally talking back.” She sports that all too smug smirk again and saunters over to Lena to hand her the cue ball. “Winner of the last game goes first. Care to share?”
Lena takes the ball from her and waltzes over to the edge of the table, dropping the ball in place and giving her own smug smirk. “There’s nothing to share, Lane. Let’s get this show on the road. One of us is going down.” She winks at the brunette and sends the cue ball soaring across the table. She manages to sink two balls, but misses on the third. “Why are you so dead set on getting me to tell Kara how I feel? Wait, how do you even know how I feel?”
Lucy laughs, the two of them really are fucking clueless. “Seriously, Luthor? Anyone within a 2 mile radius of you two can see how you feel!” She chuckles even more as Lena does her best fish impression, opening and closing her mouth several times before huffing and crossing her arms. “And I’m interested because I want Kara to be happy. She deserves it.”
After sinking a majority of the striped balls, Lucy finally misses, turning the table back over to her. Lena walks around the table looking for a decent shot before she turns back to the brunette. “You’re right, she does deserve to be happy, but that doesn’t mean I’m the right person for that.” She sighs, the cue ball clacking against one of the last few solid balls remaining. Standing and narrowing her eyes at the woman across the table, she glares. “You seem sure that she would be open to something like this. Why is that?”
They both watch as the solid ball bounces off the corner pocket and back across the felt table, leaving Lena with three balls to Lucy’s one. “For someone so smart, you sure are dumb, Luthor.” Her grin widens as Lena scoffs at her. “Kara feels the same way, she’s just too scared to admit it. Trust me.” She sinks the last striped ball and walks around to find the best angle on the 8 ball. “Besides, every time I talk to her she’s going on and on about you. Lena this and Lena that and Lena’s so amazing. Blah. Blah. Blah. Like I said earlier, if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were dating already.”
She watches as Lucy sinks the final nail into her coffin. She’s lost another game to the feisty brunette. Lillian is probably rolling over in her grave. She sighs, drops her cue stick back into its holder, and turns to face her opponent. “Alright Lane, you won fair and square.” She glances at her watch and realizes it’s just after 10 p.m. Gods, it feels much later, she thinks. “What are the rules here? I have to call her and ask her to a dinner date tomorrow, then confess my feelings. How are you going to know if I hold up my end of the deal?”
“Oh that’s simple, I will hear from Kara pretty quickly.” A shit-eating grin splits her face, she didn’t bother to tell Lena that Kara’s already told her that she’s in love with the genius woman, but is too scared to tell her. Sue her if she wants these two idiots to get their heads out of their asses. “I guarantee you that I will either get a phone call or a text from her the minute she’s done talking to you.”
Lena narrows her eyes at the petite woman. There’s something more to this, her spidey senses are tingling. “What are you up to, Lane? Don’t forget I grew up in a house full of dishonesty, betrayal, and professional liars. I can smell a scheme from a mile away.” She steps closer to Lucy and watches the brunette closely. Her eyes never waver, her head held high and shoulders remain squared. Regardless of any outward sign, she’s definitely up to something.
Lucy plucks Lena’s phone from her hand and quickly navigates to Kara’s contact. Interesting – it’s Lena’s number one in her favorites. She presses the call button and hands it over. Laughing as Lena sputters and flips her off as they make their way over to the bar to cash out their tab for the night. Just as Lena signs the credit card slip, Kara’s melodic voice sounds on the other end of the line.
“Hi Lena.” She says, a smile evident in her voice. “Oh, it’s loud. Are you still at the bar with Luce?”
“Hello, Darling.” Lena says, hearing the slight lilt in her speech. She glares at Lucy as the shorter woman has the gall to gesture and giggle at her while they make their way out onto the street. “We’re just leaving the bar now.”
Lucy continues walking alongside Lena toward her penthouse as she and Kara chat about their evening. When they eventually make it to the lobby of the building, Lucy pauses and makes a ‘wrap it up’ gesture with a raised brow added for good measure. The patented Luthor glare is what she gets in return causing her to gulp. That thing is a potent weapon, Lucy thinks, shaking and shuddering. She watches as Lena wraps up the conversation with the question she’s been waiting for.
“So, what are your plans tomorrow evening once you get off work?” Lena asks, a flutter of nervousness dancing across her skin and twirling in her stomach. She patiently waits for Kara’s response.
“Nothing on the agenda. The usual, dinner and patrol. Hopefully it’s a quiet night.” Kara says alongside the muffled noise of the television playing in the background. “What about you?”
Lena smiles, here goes nothing. “Well, I was wondering if you wanted to fly over and have a dinner date with me. We can order in and watch a movie. Whatever you want.” She does her best to swallow the terrified feeling brewing in her throat and hopes Kara isn’t listening to her heartbeat at the moment.
“Are you okay, Lena?” She asks, obvious concern laced in her voice. “Your heart is beating really fast. Is someone trying to hurt you?” A slight panicked tone knits itself into the blonde’s last sentence.
“Darling, I’m fine. Just a little tired.” Lena sighs, rolling her eyes and flipping the bird at Lucy again as she stands across from her still watching the scene unfold. “Would you be my date for dinner tomorrow?”
“Lena, of course I will. I’ll always want to have dinner with you.” She smiles. “It’s a date. But um, are you sure you’re okay? Your heart is doing some crazy things right now.” The last sentence is in a higher octave than normal, concern still oozing from her voice.
“Kara, I promise I am fine. Lucy is standing here with me to make sure I get home safely. I’m fine.” She glares at the brunette again, desperately trying not to shove Lucy into the nearest trash bin. “How about meeting me on my balcony around 9 p.m. Metropolis time? That should give you plenty of time to finish work and head this way.?
Kara is quiet for a few seconds before she says, “Yeah, okay. I can’t wait to see you.” Lena can feel her heart race and she knows if she isn’t careful, the blonde will be on the sidewalk next to her in seconds. “And you’re sure you’re okay, Lena?”
She chuckles, she can’t help it. Her traitorous heart gives her way at every turn. “I promise I am fine Kara. Just tired. And probably a little buzzed.” She shakes her head, already thinking about tomorrow night, though she wonders if Kara realizes it’s a real date and not one of their ‘friend’ dates. “Alright Darling, get some rest and I’ll see you tomorrow evening.”
“You too, Lena. See you soon.” Kara says and ends the call.
Lucy smirks at her. “I’ll walk you up to the penthouse. By the time we get there, Kara will have either called or texted me to ask questions.” She nods her head as the doorman opens the lobby doors and they make their way inside. “I’m guessing she’s trying to figure out if you really asked her on a date.”
Sure enough, by the time they exit the elevator and reach Lena’s penthouse, Lucy’s phone vibrates. The brunette lets out a loud cackle and turns the screen toward Lena. Green eyes scan the screen and her mouth drops open as she giggles, her mind focuses solely on one specific part that makes her heart soar.
Displayed in front of her is a text from Kara that reads: ‘Oh Rao! I think Lena just asked me on a date. Did she?! Are you still with her? Does she like me back? Lucy. H.E.L.P. Is she asking me out?’
“I told you, Luthor. I bet you all of your other friends have been wondering when you two would get your shit together.” Lucy laughs, stuffing her phone into her pocket. She will call Kara once she leaves. “Now, don’t forget…you have to confess at dinner. I promise you won’t be disappointed.”
Lena eyes the green-eyed woman, unsure what to make of this newfound camaraderie, but no less grateful for the less than subtle push to go for it with Kara. “I’m not sure why you decided to do this, Lane, but thanks. Who knows, if all goes well, maybe you’ll be in the wedding party.” She winks at Lucy and chuckles. “Now, go call Kara before she freaks out.”
They both laugh, a mutual nod of respect as their friendship is solidified in the middle of a hallway in front of Lena’s penthouse in Metropolis.
Years later at the wedding reception, during her matron of honor speech, Lucy regales the guest with what she calls, ‘The Tale of the Two Idiots in Love’. Lena and Kara just roll their eyes at the woman. The tale has gotten taller and more embellished over the years, but there’s one thing that remains true.
None of this would’ve happened if it wasn’t for that one night of drunken competition between Luthor & Lane.

Vengeance, Victory, and Undying Love - pt 10
Chapter 10 of my Supercorp fic in which Lena still creates something called Non Nocere to deal with her broken heart after finding out Supergirl's identity, but this time she gives the name to a different project. A more personal one. And now she’s coming for Supergirl.
This and previous chapters also available to read on Ao3
...............
‘I don’t want to be angry anymore’.
A distant, sober part of Lena was looking on in horror as the rest of her drunken self spilled all of her inner turmoil to the one person she wasn’t supposed to let back in. This woman, who alone out of all the long line of people who had let her down throughout her life had finally succeeded in shattering her heart for good.
She knew exactly how much she would regret this in the morning, but somehow right now, full of expensive scotch and self loathing, it didn’t seem to matter very much.
‘Well then, couldn’t we just... try again?’
Oh Kara. Sweet, naive, hopeful Kara. Of course it would seem so simple to her, but it wasn’t. How could it be?
Lena was a Luthor.
When it came down to it, she had taken her hurt and nursed it into something ugly. She had lashed out again and again, and systematically destroyed everything she had held dear from the moment Lex had taken his final revenge and exposed the lie at the very foundations of her happiness.
Of course they couldn’t try again.
At least, in the sober light of day they couldn’t.
But right now Kara was here, and she was looking at her with such warmth and understanding, as if she really believed that Lena was someone worthy of her grace, and everything she wanted felt within reach, if only for this one shining moment.
‘Please Kara, come here. To me. Please?’
The second please hadn’t even left her lips before Kara was beside her, an arm reaching out to tuck her in securely against her side for the first time in months.
A sob wrenched up from somewhere deep inside Lena, and she covered her mouth to try and stifle the sound of it.
She burrowed her face down into the crook of Kara’s neck and felt the relief of the contact spreading through her like warm rain after a drought.
At last, at last, at last.
She reached up to pat clumsily at Kara’s cheek, unsure how else to express the depths of her gratitude, but getting distracted by how nice it felt against her hand. The curve of it beneath her fingers, velvety soft like a sun warmed peach.
She wanted to kiss it, and so she did.
She kissed Kara’s cheek, and then she shifted a little, and kissed her mouth.
She was kissing Kara.
Kissing Kara and it was everything. It was a billion galaxies being born simultaneously, a fragile new flower spreading its petals to the sun for the very first time, a supernova, a sleepy Sunday breakfast of pancakes and coffee and doing the crossword together. It was Kara.
And for a brief, dizzying moment Kara kissed her back just as hungrily, as if the desperate, soul-deep need for this moment was in her as well as in Lena, and she let herself believe that this was real.
But then Kara put her hands on Lena’s shoulders and pushed her back, ever so gently.
Lena felt her face crumpling in despair as Kara’s warmth receded from her and the cold night rushed back in to take its place.
‘You don’t want to kiss me. Of course you don’t. I’m sorry Kara, I know you’re straight. I didn’t meant to- I should never have-’
‘No, no Lena it’s not that. Rao, I don’t think anything has ever taken more strength than stopping that kiss. I want to kiss you more than anything. But not like this. Not when you’re drunk and vulnerable, I can’t take advantage of you like that. And I need you to know that I won’t hold you to this. You know, afterwards. If you wake up tomorrow and everything is back the way it was for you – if you hate me again, I won’t hold you to tonight. I know it’s just because you’re drunk. I’m sorry Lena, I know it wasn’t fair of me to let it get this far, I just never expected… this’.
Lena nodded sagely. She hadn’t expected it either. And Kara was right, she probably would feel differently in the morning. Not about loving Kara. She knew by now that there was nothing she could do to stop that, but about the rest of it.
What she’d admitted.
And the kiss.
Oh god, the kiss.
Lena would be dreaming about that kiss for the rest of her life, and it would sear her heart like an open flame every time until there was nothing left of her but ash. But it would be almost worth it for those few perfect seconds when she was Kara’s, and Kara was hers.
It was time to stop now with whatever tattered shreds of dignity she might still possess, but somehow, even now, she couldn’t make her mouth shut up, and she found herself leaning in to murmur directly into Kara’s ear.
‘You’re right, I probably will take it back in the morning. Daylight. Sober. In’bitions. But. But shhh. This is a secret. I’ll be lying’.
She whispered the last three words and then laughed into Kara’s shoulder, beyond sense or self preservation, beyond worrying about what was going to happen next.
She laughed and laughed, until her eyes streamed with fresh tears, and then she stopped, very suddenly.
‘I think I’m going to be sick’.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Somehow, Lena had ended up on the surface of the sun.
At least, that’s what it felt like with the thin stream of sunlight that had found its way through the gap in her imperfectly closed blackout curtains stabbing directly into her brain.
Oh god, she was going to die, or throw up, or both.
Her mouth felt like she had brushed her teeth with the back end of a skunk and then gargled with kitty litter for good measure.
She gagged weakly, but didn’t have the energy to actually vomit. Or maybe there was just nothing left in her stomach to bring up. If the smell was anything to go by, the trash can pulled up by her bedside had been used for a lot more than trash last night.
What had she been thinking getting herself in such a state?
She liked a scotch or a glass or two of wine as much as the next person, but she didn’t get drunk. Not this drunk. Incapacitated drunk. No inhibitions drunk.
Fuck.
Tell Kara how you feel about her drunk.
Kara had been there last night.
She couldn’t remember how or why she was there, but flashes of the night before were coming back to her. Spilling her secrets to Kara on the balcony. Asking her to come and cuddle. Kissing her.
In better times Lena had fantasised about dozens of versions of a first kiss with Kara, but none of them had involved her being covered in snot and tears and reeking of whisky, kissing her when she didn’t want to be kissed.
She was going to have to do some serious damage control, just as soon as her bed stopped swooping about so alarmingly.
She reached out blindly to the bedside table, searching for the glass she kept there and hoping there was still an inch or two of water left in it from the last time she’d bothered to fill it. It would be stale and unsatisfying but better than nothing, and there was no way she could get up and go to the kitchen for a refill right now.
Instead her groping fingers were met with a full bottle of still-cold mineral water from the fridge and another of painkillers, on top of which lay a torn off scrap of paper with nothing on it but three letters:
XO K
Bothered - Part 2
Part 1 here (with the inspiration cover art from @papurrcat)
Kara stops at the newsstand outside the Lena Luthor Foundation to buy a fresh copy of the magazine. The one she carried from her apartment is a little too wind blown and a lot too crinkled from her wringing grip. Lena deserves to have nice, non-wrinkly things.
Kara turns and her eyes track up the skyscraper that houses Lena’s new headquarters. She might be uncharacteristically nervous to see her friend today, but she’s still proud to be walking through these doors to meet her. The new office, the new mission, the not-so-new name… they’re all evidence of Lena’s perseverance, her singular focus to do good in the world.
Hence why Kara had fought to be assigned the article and interview in the first place. She had taken to the task with relish, eager to show the world the many incredible facets of one Lena Luthor. She hadn’t expected the photographer for her piece to take such a… different approach. To unveil an edgier, more carnal side of Lena even Kara hadn’t known.
Kara swallows and tries not to shred the brand new copy of Lena’s cover article into tatters between her nervous fingers. She deposits it delicately (if not a little twitchily) into her bag and forces herself through the revolving doors and up to Lena’s office.
“Kara, hi!” Lena greets her with breathless wonder as Kara eases the door open. She sounds just as pleasantly surprised as if Kara hadn’t announced her visit via text message minutes before. The dazzling smile Lena tosses her way curls around Kara’s spine and squeezes, effortlessly dissipating the tension that had gathered on the elevator ride up. Kara grins back wide.
“Hey Lena,” she responds, a little hushed. The young Luthor shuts her laptop and moves to stand. “Oh no, please don’t get up on my account!”
“Don’t be silly,” Lena waves her off and sweeps elegantly out of her chair. She may not be a corporate billionaire any longer, but she still carries herself like the most expensive person in the room. It never fails to leave Kara in a bit of a daze. Especially when all of that enchanting energy is directed at folding Kara into a tingling full-bodied hug. “I was about to take a break anyhow. To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Besides me missing you?” Kara sighs over Lena’s shoulder. She’s taken to allowing herself an extra few seconds in their embraces lately. Now that they’re on sure footing again, she won’t miss any opportunity to let her best friend know how valued she is.
“We had movie night just yesterday,” Lena argues weakly. Kara hears the way her breath whooshes out of her though and she smiles. Lena may never admit it, but Kara is keenly aware of how the former CEO melts a little at the very idea of being appreciated. And Kara is a total glutton for giving Lena that satisfaction.
“That was a whole sixteen hours ago!” They release one another slowly and Kara tips her head to the side. “Today is a new day. I need my Lena fix.”
Lena’s diffident huff pushes Kara’s smile out to her ears. She loses track of time watching an imperceptible blush dust across the shorter woman’s cheekbones.
“So,” Lena begins after indulging Kara’s staring far longer than she would anyone else, “is feeding your addiction the only reason you came to see me? Or do I have something else to thank for the impromptu visit?”
“Oh!” It’s not exactly Kara’s fault that Lena’s scronchy smile and barely there perfume distracted her from the task at hand. She’s Kryptonian, not made of stone. “Actually yes!”
She fumbles in her messenger bag and retrieves the magazine, holding the cover against her chest to prolong the reveal. “Catco’s new issue came out today. The one with the article I interviewed you for.”
“Oh!” Green eyes brighten even as Lena shakes her head. “Goodness, I got so caught up with paperwork… I’d actually forgotten.” She smiles apologetically at Kara but her gaze dips excitedly to the bound papers gathered in the super’s arms.
Kara wastes no time and extends them in offering. “You’re the feature, you know. Cover and everything.”
Lena blushes lightly once more and Kara revels in the sight as she plucks the glossy papers carefully out of the extended grip and walks over to the couch. Kara follows and holds her breath as Lena turns the magazine over.
“Oh wow,” Lena whispers, a hint of a smile in her words. Kara recognizes the quick stutt-stutter of her heart as she catches sight of the cover. “I…” she laughs and shakes her head. “I honestly didn’t think they would use some of these shots. Let alone on the front page…”
Kara watches intently. Her cheeks are beginning to heat at the sight of real-life Lena spreading her pretty fingers over the tantalizing picture of herself. She swallows down her fidgeting as Lena tilts her head curiously and flips the issue open.
Minutes go by in silence. Kara follows the movement of Lena’s eyes, shifting colors as they dash across the page. Eventually her eyebrows raise, a soft expression of gratitude trapped between her dark lashes and parted lips. “Wow, Kara. This is…”
“I mean every word,” Kara smiles. “I wanted to give the world a glimpse of all the different parts of the Lena that I know. In case you missed it, you’re pretty great.” Lena ducks her head bashfully and Kara scoots a few inches closer on the couch, eager to coax a few more diffident smiles. She leans in so she can glance at the open pages over Lena’s shoulder. “I didn’t get to see the layout before it got published, but I really think the photos—”
“Wait, you didn’t even get a chance to agree to these?” Lena turns to her with alarm. “I’m so sorry!”
“What? No, it’s—”
“Oh god. I know how awful it is to have your creative agency taken away from you… I shouldn’t have let myself get so caught up at the photoshoot.” Lena rushes to absorb all blame faster than Kara can fly. Kara moves her mouth to argue but Lena shakes her head, redirects her now stricken attention to the images on the page. “How inconsiderate of me. I’d been thinking about how we discussed fashion in the interview and considered that it might be fun to put that twist in the photos. Andrea was so encouraging… She had dozens of ideas and we had such fun with the entire team, I… I got carried away and didn’t even think about how it might work with your writing. I’m so sorry, Kara.”
Kara waits a few beats. When the silence has lasted long enough to assure her Lena has finished, she reaches out and places her hand gently above Lena’s knee. The young Luthor turns to her. “It was not a big deal at all. The only reason I didn’t get to see the spread before it went to copy was because of a Supergirl emergency. Not because Andrea didn’t let me see it.”
That seems to reassure Lena somewhat. She takes a short breath and a fraction of the concern dissipates from her eyes. Kara smiles encouragingly and tilts closer, pointedly directing her gaze to the magazine for Lena’s to follow.
“Besides,” she ignores the way her own throat tightens at the combination of Lena’s physical proximity and the ideas that surge whenever she catches a glimpse of her in those poses. “I think you look amazing.”
Kara hears the reverent awe in her whisper and it occurs to her that she might sound a bit too… earnest. “I mean, uh, the entire layout looks amazing,” she corrects awkwardly.
Unfortunately, Kara’s candidness is incredibly persistent. It wants to go nowhere but out. “And you look so beautiful, Lena. Powerful, elegant, and um…” Kara hesitates long enough to lower her voice around the word that has traveled to the tip of her tongue quite without her permission. “Sexy,” she croaks quietly.
Lena’s breathing does a rapid stop-start. “Oh.” Her voice sounds paper thin and Kara grinds her teeth, hoping against hope she didn’t make Lena too uncomfortable with her compliments.
“Um. Thank you,” Lena mutters. She hedges for a second, then redirects expertly. “Are you sure it’s alright, though? I hate that I enabled Andrea to encroach on your freedom to tell the story your way. I can give her a call and—”
“I’m sure,” Kara entreats, slipping effortlessly into ‘comfort Lena’ mode and tightening the fingers wrapped around the other woman’s knee. “The whole spread fits really well with the theme I envisioned for the piece: ‘the different facets of Lena Luthor.’ Besides, I think the photographs manage to show a side of you that’s not captured in the text.”
Then, distracted by the alluring gaze of Lena in print and the warmth of Lena in the flesh, Kara adds forlornly, “A side of you I’ve never gotten to see before.”
Lena furrows her brow and the inaudible sound of her skin knitting into wrinkles alerts Kara back to reality. “A side you’ve never… but you know me better than anyone, Kara. What ‘side’ do you mean?” Lena queries, hesitation coloring her voice.
The side that screams ‘take me,’ Kara’s brain supplies unhelpfully. She manages to keep that lethal answer appropriately locked away but struggles to find one she can give that doesn’t sound absurdly similar.
“You know…” her communication skills are rapidly evacuating her mind, “the side of you that’s more, uh…” Kara squirms, straightens glasses that aren’t there, works her mouth silently around nothing, and swallows three or four times before pursing her lips and releasing the only somewhat neutral word she can think of: “seductive.”
“Seductive.” Lena repeats it like a question.
“Yeah,” Kara heaves.
Another crinkle appears between Lena’s manicured eyebrows. “Well,” she begins, sounding like she intends to explain herself, “I mean. That’s not—you and I, we…” Lena pauses again, clearly at a loss for words. It pains Kara to see how miserably awkward she’s made this.
She removes her hand because the skin of Lena’s thigh suddenly feels like fire on her palm.
“I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable, Lena,” Kara moves to intercept the trajectory of the conversation and wrangle it onto more even ground. “As a matter of fact, that’s the other reason I came over. It’s… what I wanted to talk to you about. I don’t want you to feel like you have to hide parts of yourself from me.”
Now Lena looks plainly confused. “Hide…?”
Kara nods emphatically. This is the discussion she’d been angling for. “You can be any version of yourself with me, Lena. Silly, sad, tired…” (Kara can’t help the way her eyes stick like glue to the image of the Luthor sporting a gorgeous ring, her tight ponytail clutched in her own fist.) “Even the sensual side. I love every part of you.”
“That’s… um,” Lena begins unsteadily, still blatantly perplexed, “incredibly sweet of you to say. But I… I’ve never intended to hide from you, Kara. I’m genuinely sorry if it appears that way.”
Lena seems well and truly thrown, but bless her heart she’s doing her best to engage with the Kryptonian’s disparate points. She pauses thoughtfully. “I guess I’d say that any type of… ‘seductive’ behavior just seems a little… inappropriate to impose on you?”
Lena attempts to assuage Kara’s concerns with kindness but even then it comes out like a question. Kara barrels forward to try to help her understand.
“That’s what I’m trying to say—I don’t want you to feel like that’s inappropriate with me! You’re not imposing!” Lena’s brow wrinkles again and Kara tries to clarify. “I like being there for you, no matter how you’re feeling. I love acting ridiculous with you when you’re feeling silly. When you’re upset, I’m always ready to cry with you or listen or hug you until you can’t breathe. And when you’re tired I have been known to provide the best snuggles in National City.”
Lena's fond smile snags all of Kara’s focus for a second, which is why she doesn’t fully comprehend the implications of saying, “So when you’re feeling more… sexual or whatever,” the word absolutely sticks to Kara’s throat so she rasps it as best she can, “I want to be able to help with that, too. You don’t need to keep it from me. Inappropriate or not, I’m here for you Lena. For everything you need.”
Lena’s eyes widen. “You—you want to… help with…”
“Yes!” Kara nods. “You wouldn’t be imposing. I’d hate for you to have to seek that… that, uh,” she stumbles over the word pleasure and flounders dumbly for a few seconds before landing on an eloquent, “stuff… from anyone else. Not when you have me.”
Lena is openly gaping at Kara now. She stares for several silent moments before shaking her head and clearing her throat. “Let me get this straight. Y-you want me to… be open, with you specifically, whenever I’m in a sex—seductive mood?”
Kara nods again, silently encouraging. Lena proceeds with caution. “And you are offering to… what, exactly?”
“Whatever you need, Lena,” Kara answers immediately. The words are neutral but her neurons light up with images of Lena’s ponytail wrapped around her fist and the prominent tendons of Lena’s neck flexing under her tongue.
“Oookay…” Lena drags out the word. “And… you’d hate for me to seek that sort of attention from anyone else?”
“You got it!” Kara smiles brilliantly. Lena always understood her better than anyone. She watches expectantly as her friend turns this information over in her head.
“Kara…” Lena’s sigh sounds more melancholy than anything. “I don’t mean this poorly but… don’t you think that sort of attention might be a bit too… intimate?”
Kara’s throat goes dry. She hadn’t really thought anything could ever be ‘too intimate’ between the two of them. It’s them. It’s Lena. Kara hasn’t yet encountered a boundary she isn’t willing to blast to smithereens for this woman. Kara tells her so.
“Oh.” Lena goes silent. Her eyes fall to her lap where the cover of magazine stares damningly into Kara’s soul.
The quiet drags on as Lena ponders and Kara watches nervously, keeping her fidgeting to a minimum so she doesn’t break anything. She’s not sure what she’s expecting, but after a few agonizing moments it seems Lena decides on something.
When she turns back to Kara, her eyes burn hotter than the smolder that’s frozen on the page.
“Are you asking me to seduce you, Supergirl?”
It sounds like she could be joking, if either of them wanted an out. But Lena’s voice is sinfully sultry even in jest and it seeps through Kara’s pretenses like water through a sieve. She gulps and, Rao help her, caves without a second thought. She nods vigorously, captivated by the promise ahead.
Lena’s eyes widen almost imperceptibly. Even without the tell, Kara can hear the way her heart picks up its pace. The rhythm is far too inviting to ignore. Kara thinks about how it might taste different at the base of Lena’s throat or at the inside of her wrist or the juncture of her inner thigh. Evidently the drumbeat can accomplish a fair share of seducing all on its own.
Emboldened, Lena slides closer over the leather, injecting a fluidity into her movements that wasn’t there a split second ago. It makes the muscles in Kara’s fingers twitch with the desire to feel. Lena’s voice drops to a low rumble that vibrates through the couch and she leans a few tantalizing degrees closer to Kara.
“Are you also suggesting that you don’t want me to engage in any such flirtations with anyone else?”
“No,” Kara chokes out. She can’t escape the tempting notion that Lena is hers alone. “No one else,” she clarifies. “Just me.”
The shaky admission lights a furnace somewhere within her body. She can’t locate it exactly but it sends heat thundering to her cheeks, her neck, the space between her legs.
Lena leans closer and suddenly all Kara knows is the smell of her perfume. How she’d managed to survive its spell before is beyond understanding, but now it’s all Kara can do to string two breaths together without wanting to drown in the scent.
“Then tell me, darling,” Lena purrs, stretching like a cat across the seat until her mouth hovers by Kara’s ear and her hair tumbles onto the sleeve of Kara’s sweater. “What can I expect to receive if I agree, hm?”
Kara makes a bit of a strangled sound as Lena tips up and brushes her lips over the shell of her ear. She loses the battle of self-control to a full body shiver when Lena whispers a suggestion, hot breath washing over Kara’s skin. “A kiss, perhaps?”
“Yes,” is the obvious answer, even though Kara’s voice cracks open on the idea of it alone. Lena’s hum of satisfaction sends another ripple through them both. Since when are their chests touching? Kara’s is heaving wildly and if it weren’t for the booming beat of Lena’s heart, she would think her best friend was perfectly at ease in this otherwise devastating situation.
It’s wicked, the way Lena’s tongue darts out and paints a short but blazing trail over Kara’s ear. “Or could I have more? Would you give me more if I asked?”
Kara just groans her agreement, brain effectively ruined. She discovers belatedly that her hands have found the curve of Lena’s waist. They fit perfectly, kneading into the softness of her sides, keeping their bodies close.
“Any—” Kara surprises herself with the hoarseness of her own voice. She clears her throat but it does nothing at all to help. So she squeezes Lena carefully between her palms, delights in the way her friend’s sharp inhale presses outward against her fingertips.
“You can have anything you want,” Kara promises.
Lena’s heartbeat stutters again. That’s the only warning Kara receives before Lena is sitting back, putting a very unwelcome few inches of distance between them. Kara’s hands remain anchored on her waist.
“And what do you want, Kara?”
The question is a pointed deviation from the last few titillating seconds. Lena’s eyes are serious all of a sudden, earnest, boring into hers. Kara trips on the change of pace. She hasn’t allowed herself time to consider the question this way. The only thing she knows for certain is that she doesn’t want to let Lena go. “Me?” Lena nods.
Kara’s fingers flex and she looks away, nervous in the spotlight that’s been turned on her. “I… I, um—” The crinkle appears. It’s not as if she doesn’t want at all—Kara can infer that much. If she thinks back, she recognizes that when it comes to Lena, she’s wanted for as long as she can remember. But the ‘what’ is a doozy.
It’s lived as an amorphous ‘more’ since the beginning—more lunches, more coffee breaks, more movie nights, more sleepovers, more closeness. The list was never ending, but closeness to Lena lived permanently at the top. It wasn’t until Kara saw those photos—images that seemed to capture Lena’s desire, a desire of a very specific kind, and reflect it right back—that the vague idea of what Kara yearned for began to take shape.
This new ground they’re standing on is upending her entire understanding of what she’s always craved with Lena. It transforms from an intangible ‘more’ to an explosive ‘everything,’ and Kara can barely wrap her head around how this may fundamentally change their relationship, let alone how to ask for it. So she stammers helplessly, caught red-handed longing for something she couldn’t name until it turned around to look her in the eye.
Lena is wondrous. Kara has known this forever and is reminded of the fact when her best friend senses her hesitation and, instead of assuming rejection and fleeing, gathers Kara’s incongruence up in gentle hands and reshapes it into a question she has a prayer of answering.
Softly, patiently, Lena smiles. “Let’s start small,” she offers quietly. Kara blinks, breathing uneven, and rubs her thumbs across the top of Lena’s ribcage as acquiescence. Lena holds her gaze steadily and reaches up with one hand, setting it gently on Kara’s shoulder. She slides it carefully inward until her fingertips meet the overheated side of Kara’s neck.
The direct contact sucks all of the Kryptonian’s focus like a black hole. Her entire world narrows to Lena’s thumb as it sweeps lightly over the sensitive front of her throat, dips into the hollow of her collarbone and then tracks back up to rest beseechingly beneath her chin. Lena’s eyes drop heavily to Kara’s mouth and she feels them like glittering emerald brands.
“Do you want this?” Lena finally asks, finding Kara’s eyes through her lashes. She’s incredibly gracious for breaking this tumultuous realization into bite-sized pieces for Kara, but Kara isn’t blind to the unspoken question floating in her eyes. Lena is achingly vulnerable in her hands, exposing a guarded and tender part of herself to Kara, asking, wondering if she is wanted.
The notion of Lena feeling anything but treasured and appreciated borders on offensive. Kara can hem and haw all she wants but she will die before she lets Lena doubt for a second how much she is desired in every way imaginable.
“Yes,” Kara answers. The released truth leaves her light as a feather, but it charges the air as Lena exhales her apprehension in tiny, nervous breath. Kara crowds closer. Any distance feels excessive all of a sudden. “I want you very much,” she amends, ducking her head so she can press her lips to the pad of Lena’s thumb.
Lena suppresses a watery chuckle. The wetness in her eyes catches the sun and turns them a soft, mossy amber. Their foreheads gravitate together, magnetized by sheer relief. Lena’s eyes flutter shut and Kara is busy being enthralled by the way her lashes brush the tops of her cheeks when she asks, hesitant once more, “Do you want this— us… more than once?”
Another idea to consider. This answer takes no time at all. “Yes.” Kara presses forward, brushes Lena’s nose with the tip of hers. “As many times as you’ll let me.
“One step at a time,” Lena smiles, radiant even as she pokes gentle fun. “Why don’t we see how this first one goes, shall we?”
Kara thinks the force of her yes could swallow them both whole.
In the end, it’s not the dark seductress Kara encountered in print that pulls Kara’s lips to hers. It’s the Lena she knows, the Lena she loves, soft and candid and hers, that guides Kara down into the last first kiss of her life.
(“I should have known you’d be really good at this,” Kara mumbles later as they ease apart and back together again.
“At what?” Lena inquires from her tantalizing perch astride the Kryptonian’s lap. “Kissing?”
“Seducing me,” Kara corrects breathily and presses her mouth to Lena’s bright laugh. “The kissing part, too.” Her hands are still tucked tightly around the small of Lena’s waist and she’s beginning to wonder if it’s worth ever letting go. “You're good at everything, Lena. I shouldn’t be surprised.”
Their kiss lingers for a several lazy seconds before Lena pulls back, slowly releasing Kara’s lower lip from between her teeth. She pins Kara with a devastating stare and licks her lips. “Would you like to find out what else I’m good at?”
Kara’s never flown anyone faster than she does that day.)
(Later, later, during her Best Sister speech at Kara and Lena’s wedding, Alex teases them relentlessly for flirting in published print before ever figuring anything out in person.)
Let's talk about petal pink Lillian.
Remember that, briefly, Lena does consider working with Kara instead of Lex after Crisis (when she finds out she's on Earth Prime, and that Lex is alive). And it's Earth Prime Lillian who convinces her otherwise.
Consider this: There Lillian is, minding her own business, basically ruling the world. She runs a Foundation (god knows what that's up to) and manipulates those dumb supers into furthering her world domination mission. Her even-keeled level-headed genius son is totally onboard, furthering the family domination, all the while keeping the Luthor name squeaky clean (he even won the Nobel!).
Then some idiot hothead in her son's body shows up and tells her "I'm your son now, the universe rebooted, Lena's not the one you think you know either". Everything Lillian knows has shifted.
How annoying.
So she has two goals - calm New Lex the fuck down, and get Lena back onboard from whatever fallout the two had on this other Earth. They're her children, after all.
She tells Lena to work with Lex instead of Kara, because Lena won't make the mistake of trusting Lex. But secretly... I think Lillian wants Lena to trust Lex again, but Lillian is also banking on Lex being someone she can reshape into something closer to her Lex. The one who could put aside petty squabbles in order to take over the world. Surely he'll come around. After all, what idiot would let himself be taken down by his own pride?
(Her new son, apparently.)
Would Superman exist in a Kara Luthor world? Just trying to imagine how that would work if Kara is fully adopted and raised alongside Lex and Lena.
I dunno about Superman. If anything, I think he would emerge after Kara does, possibly as a direct result of Kara using her powers publicly?
And I answered an ask this morning that tumblr apparently ate, so I'm going to try and remember what I wanted to post.
First off, I think Kara would be more like Lex than Lena would be. She would definitely internalize his speeches of grandeur-- the Luthors *deserve* their status, they've *earned* their privilege. Bc the house of El was largely the same. She's been pre-conditioned, whereas while Lena certainly reaps the benefits of being a Luthor, she has a more grounded foundation.
And again, I think Lena would be a humanizing influence for Kara, but that only goes so far once Lena's put in danger. At that point it's the Luthor way or none at all, no matter how much Lena tries to remind her that humanity is more than its violent few.
Morning
It's early in the morning, and Kara feels like half the day has already gone by; she's been flying high long before the sun even got high enough to cast its glow across National City. But she still somehow felt completely alive.
She stops, just floating in the air. Just basking in the light. She closes her eyes and takes a breath.
She can almost hear Lena's voice, teasing her; "Oh, to be an alien superpowered by the sun," she would say. Kara smiles at the thought, her eyes still closed.
Without her express permission, her superhearing just hones in that familiar heartbeat. Strong and steady, along with the clacking of heels on the floor of the Lena Luthor Foundation.
Kara opens her eyes and flies off, eastbound, fast but not fast enough to break the sound barrier.
Five minutes later, she lands on Lena's balcony, gently and silently, with a tray of coffee in hand. She knocks softly on the window.
"Supergirl, what can I do for you?" Lena's voice is gentle, curious, and slightly worried.
"I brought cappuccinos. From Pavé," Kara says, offering the tray.
"Milan?" Lena furrows her brows, confused.
Kara nods. "I came not as Supergirl, but as Kara. Just Kara," she smiles to her best friend. "And I have a request."
"Anything," Lena's answer is immediate, just as always. Willing to do whatever it takes for the greater good.
Kara smiles. "Go on a date with me."
A New Beginning: A Supergirl 6x20 Re-Write
Chapter 12: The Countdown Begins
Days had passed. Everyone had gone about their normal business, acting as if nothing exciting was happening, aside from the occasional bad guy the Super Friends had to take down and lock up. However, that was all a front. Whenever the Super Friends weren’t saving people, they were helping Lena put the finishing touches on the big proposal and engagement party that was taking place later this evening. Alex, Kelly and Nia had gotten all the arrangements for the day taken care of, and Brainy and Sam called the ones that were available on the guest list for the party; the ones that couldn’t make it would come to the wedding. And Lena, well to say she was a mess was an understatement.
Pacing in her office at the headquarters for the Lena Luthor Foundation, there was a rap at her door. “Who is it?” Asking, not even bothering to actually look, she was that nervous.
“Thought you could use a pick me up.” Eliza pokes her head in with a bag of donuts and coffee. “Kara had called. She noticed you were a bit…”
“Preoccupied?” Finishing Eliza’s sentence, Lena finally stopped pacing to accept the treats her future mother in law had brought. “Thank you, both of you. I hope I didn’t worry Kara.”
“A little, but it’s Kara. She’s always going to worry about you. Especially because she noticed you didn’t really eat this morning, and you kind of sped out the door…without giving her a goodbye.”
“That is true…” She tapped the side of her cup, still thinking about later tonight.
“It’s about the proposal and party later tonight, isn’t it? That’s why you’ve been preoccupied.” Eliza could see that Lena had also adopted Kara’s famous crinkle whenever she was lost in thought.
“How could you tell?” Lena was gingerly nursing her caffeine, which was helping her remain somewhat calm, despite the drink doing the exact opposite.
“You’ve barely touched your favorite donut that Kara told me about…and you’ve adopted Kara’s crinkle when she gets lost thinking.” Putting her own mug down, she leans forward. “Lena, even if something does go wrong, you know Kara is going to be happy because she’s going to be with you, her friends and family. The added gesture of going down memory lane will just add to the special occasion.”
“You’re very sweet for saying that, Eliza, and I realize that I could be doing this in a potato sack and Kara would still be over the moon. But the reason why this has to be perfect…today is the anniversary of the day we first met. The helicopter ride over the city, and the restaurant where we had our first lunch date…I want this to remind her why we were meant to be in each other’s lives.”
“Time sure does fly, doesn’t it?“ Both Eliza and Lena stand, and she gives her a reassuring embrace, to make sure Lena got the hint that everything is going to be okay. “Make sure you keep your energy up. You don’t need to be fainting on the second most important day of your life.”
“Thanks again for stopping by, Eliza. And if you see Kara…tell her I said thank you for the donut.” At this point, there was a permanent rouge to Lena’s cheeks at all times; Kara had that effect on her.
And as Eliza was leaving…
“Alex, what a pleasant surprise.” Lena greets her warmly.
“Hey Lena, Mom…Donut run?” She Inquisitively asked correctly.
“You know Kara, she’s always looking out for her.” Eliza winked, meaning Lena, as she left to head back to work herself.
“Can I get you anything, Alex?”
“No, I’m good, thank you. I actually came by to see how you were doing. Asking how you’re feeling seems kinda redundant when I have a clue how you’re feeling…And I wanted to give you this.” What she hands over is a picture that Esme drew of Lena and Kara, saving the day.
“Awwww, that has to be the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.” Lena felt some of her nerves melt away slightly when she saw the picture. Anything that Esme has drawn her, she had kept in a folder to look at, whenever she needed a pick-me-up. And seeing that it was both her and Kara, she made sure it was front and center on her desk. “What do you think?”
“I think next time Esme comes by, her ego is going to go through the roof.” Alex snorted at her joke, but she was also being extremely serious.
“I believe it…” Lena chuckled along, simultaneously kneading her hands together.
“Lena, sit down.” Alex does her grabby hands, reaching for Lena to take a seat. “I know you’re nervous about going perfectly. Sam, Brainy, Nia and I got everything you asked for, we made the arrangements, and triple checked with everyone who could come. And I’m not saying anything won’t, but if anything does go wrong…we have a backup plan. Kara is going to be so happy about tonight, that I highly doubt she will even care if something about the party goes wrong.”
“And Kelly?”
One cue, Alex holds up her FaceTime. “I made sure the helicopter ride was taken care of.” She flashes Lena a calming smile. “I’m sure Alex already told you this, but things will go great. It probably just feels jarring because you’ve never experienced this kind of joy since…”
“Since I was young…and the first time I met Kara.” Lena finished Kelly’s sentence.
“Just remember to breathe, and give yourself a break. Everything you will say and do tonight will come naturally to you.” Kelly assures through the screen.
“I don’t know what I would do without either of you.” Graciously thanking them both, she looks at her watch, as if to be getting ready for something. “Sorry I can’t chat more, I have my…”
“Lunch date with Kara.” Alex and Kelly chime in unison.
“Exactly.” Laughing off the blushing, she goes to gather her bag.
“I should get going myself. I have to pick up Esme from school.” Alex opens her office door as they both exit.
“See both later tonight.” Lena waves goodbye as she heads off to grab food, and then to Kara’s office.
In one bag with their Big Belly Burger order, and the other with a couple of donuts, Lena headed up to Kara’s corner office. Was the proposal and party still on her mind? Absolutely. But she couldn’t let that give her away. She had to push that to the back of her mental filing cabinet for now. Right now, her focus was on her lunch date with her gorgeous girlfriend. Treating her to lunch was the perfect way to not only relax, but a much needed distraction.
Upon reaching the building, Lena was escorted to a private entrance that led right up to Kara’s office. Going up the private lift, it did give her a chance to gather herself more, and perfect her acting skills in that short amount of time. “Kara?”
“Lena, hi!” Practically leaping out of her chair like a puppy when someone comes home, she goes to greet her.
“Hi.” Lena closes the distance with a peck to Kara’s lips and a smile. “This is new. When did this happen?”
“Isn’t this cool? Miss Grant…let’s just say she can be very persuasive. Apparently she was working on this before I even accepted the offer to be Editor and Chief. And I don’t think I’m ever going to complain about work ever again.” Interjecting, she takes a couple quick sniffs. “Did you?”
“I had a feeling you needed a pick me up.” That signature eyebrow raise and smirk followed.
“Have I told you how much I love you?” Kara gave her heart eyes.
“Are those heart eyes for me…or the food?”
“Both. But you’re obviously first.” Kara quickly and jokingly assured. “Why don’t you take a seat on the couch, and I’ll grab us something to drink.”
“You’ve been hard at work changing the world one word at a time…” Transferring the bag of delicious aroma to Kara before she even made her seemingly genetic grabby hands, just like Alex, she then adds a kiss. “Let me get the drinks. Take a break.”
“Yes ma’am.” Not so subtlety biting her lip, she heads to the couch to plate the food on her coffee table, strewn with various issues of the magazine; at the top were the two stories about her as Supergirl. “Did you get the donut delivery this morning?”
“I did. Tell your mom again that I very much appreciated it…” There was a brief pause, knowing the rapidity of her leaving would be addressed. “I’m sorry if I worried you this morning.” A slight shyness was there as she handed over the fountain drinks that had been re-poured into Kara’s Crystal drink set; the other gift from Cat.
“Hey, you don’t need to explain yourself.” Quickly chewing before she spoke again, Kara made it a point to always validate Lena’s feelings. “If you were feeling off this morning, I don’t want to push you to talk. You know you can tell me anything; but if you’re feeling off, that’s your space until you’re ready.”
As Kara was speaking, Lena’s smile kept growing. “How in the Hell did I get this lucky? She could’ve been slightly annoyed, even poked fun. Nope, she just showers me in love in validation.” She thinks to herself as she listens. “I always know you mean what you say, but when you haven’t inhaled your food and your…almost hypnotic…gaze…doesn’t break…I know you’re serious.”
Smirking, seeing that Lena still got flustered, Kara too, felt lucky in that moment. “I’ll always look out for you. My precious and powerful spellcaster.” Reaching across the table, she caressed Lena’s hand tenderly. “I’m always going to make sure you’re happy and loved, because that’s what matters to me; that you know that beautiful, caring soul that you have is safe.”
It was those words that somehow melted any worry that Lena had left about the surprise for Kara…completely away. She felt this rush of certainty and confidence. She would embrace tonight, and all of the bumps should they happen. It wouldn’t matter. What would matter to her is that she was going to be engaged to the most amazing person in all of the Galaxy, but that she would be gaining a family she had always wanted for herself.
“So…do you remember what today is?” Lena jokingly winked, knowing her girlfriend had the mind of a steel trap and memory sharper than a tack.
“Like I’m going to forget the days we officially became friends. Which explains the…” Kara’s eyes lock onto a bag she missed. “Potstickers. I can’t believe I didn’t catch them.” Her adorably loud chortle filled the room. “Are they from?”
“The restaurant where we first met?” Lena answered simply with a nod. “And look…” Towering over the container, she didn’t have a utensil.
“You—I…” Kara’s cartoon gasp preceded. “You’re using your fingers! Isn’t it easier?”
“I can see why you find it appealing.” Lena couldn’t help but giggle at her reaction.
“They’re too much work sometimes, plush when you have the metabolism of a cheetah…” Kara motions up and down to herself. “You run the risk of accidentally eating them, over the food.” She shoveled in yet another potsticker.
And for the rest of that afternoon, Lena relaxed with Kara talking about anything and everything that would make each other laugh. She forgot about the party and she forgot about the helicopter ride. They were planned, and they would happen how they happened. Even if everything fell apart, she would still be surrounded by friends and family. She would be proposing to the woman of her dreams.
Time had passed so much that she had actually lost it and needed to get ready.
“I hate to dine and dash, babe, but I have to get back to my office. Have to finalize some paperwork for the next fundraiser.”
“Oh, let me walk you out.” Kara, without hesitating, puts down her food, and walks Lena to her elevator. Just before Lena steps in, she quickly grabs her wrist and pulls her in for a goodbye kiss that would most definitely occupy the rest of her remaining brain capacity.
“What was that for?” Lena asked, her eyes still closed with a smile, before seeing those ocean blue eyes staring right back at her.
“To make sure you have a good rest of your day…and to keep you satisfied till date night later.” Kara had a slightly sultry voice when she said that.
“That definitely worked.” Lena’s suit matched the color of her cheeks. Taking one last moment before she left to get ready for tonight, she reached to caress Kara’ s cheek while taking in that stare again. Kara’s eyes were not only her Kryptonite; one look would make her weak in the knees regardless of what emotion Kara was feeling, but they were also her personal yellow Sun. One look, and any confidence she though she lost was restored.
“What?” Kara asked.
“Nothing…” It was most certainly something, Lena just didn’t want to jynx her luck. “Okay, I really should get going. I love you and I will see you later.”
“I love you too.” Kara knee Lena had something on her mind, she could hear her heartbeat. But she didn’t want to spoil the moment, so she let it go. Waving goodbye, she blew Lena a kiss as the door closed.
Right when the door closed, Lena took out her phone and sent a group text.
“It's time. Let’s get everyone ready for a night to remember.”
Everyone get ready, Chapter 12 is the one right before the big moment! Hope You enjoy 🙏🏻.
