In Memory of Leonard Winston
Rest In Peace Leo, heir to the 1960s of the Langston Legacy.
Leo had the greatest character development of any sim in this family. He began life as a shy and nerdy young boy, but with the encouragement of his mother he developed a passion for music which turned into his life. He was the famous frontman of his band Lenny and the Rollers at the peak of rock and roll in the 1960s, and later had a successful solo career both on his own, and in collaboration with his family. Leo lived life hard and fast, and made a legacy for himself in sim history.
In his lifetime Leo maximised his piano, guitar and charisma skills. He also reached the top of the musician career and achieved his aspiration of Party Animal.
Leo is survived by his wife Valerie, his daughters Daphne and Eleanor, and his four siblings Desmond, Violet, Pearl and Stella.

Marbled Monday
It’s time for another Marbled Monday! This week we have some gorgeous marbling found in the binding of C-S The Master Craftsman by American book collector and businessman Norman H. Strouse and British book designer and historian of print John Dreyfus. The book includes two essays about English artist and bookbinder T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, each by one of the authors. It was published in 1969 by the Adagio Press in Harper Woods, Michigan and printed by Leonard Bahr, who founded the Adagio Press. Printed in Palatino type designed by Hermann Zapf, the book is printed on handmade Tovil paper, which was printed dry (usually this type of paper is best printed on damp). Bahr explains in the colophon that there were many issues faced while printing the book, namely time (owing to the fact that “The Adagio Press is a sparetime printing activity, confined to the evening and weekend hours available after normal employment”) and the number of pages able to be set at one time due to the amount of type owned by the press. The book was printed in an edition of 329 copies. Our copy is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff.
Oddly enough, the 2-page colophon doesn’t mention the marbled paper used for the binding! The marbling pattern isn’t to be found in my trusty reference from the University of Washington Libraries and appears to be a unique, floral or foliage-inspired design. Done in cream, black, and red, the pattern features flowers or leaves with the colors swirled together. It’s interesting and lovely, especially when you get up really close to see the swirly interstitial bits.
View more Marbled Monday posts.
VIew more posts about work by the Adagio Press.

Hi! I am such a huge fan of your blog and admire your vast knowledge of classical music. I wanted to ask you if you have any recommendations for books on Bach? I started reading Peter Williams’ “A life in music”, but while enjoying it, I find it a bit too biographical for my needs, as I want to read something that analyses his music in depth, rather than focusing primarily on his life. Also, if you have any non-fiction classical music books to recommend, that would also be very helpful. Thanks!
Hello! I haven’t read A Life in Music, but these are some of my favorite Bach books that focus on his work:
Bach’s Musical Universe, the Composer and his Works, Christoph Wolff
Bach’s Major Vocal Works: Music, Drama, Liturgy, Markus Rathey
Bach and the Patterns of Invention, Laurence Dreyfus
Bach and the Meanings of Counterpoint, David Yearsley
The Creative Development of Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard D. P. Jones (Vol. I, II)
The New Bach Reader, Christoph Wolff
Below, there are some recommended texts. I’ve still yet to read Swafford’s newest Beethoven biography, Fischer’s book on Mahler, a definitive Schubert biography, Debussy’s complete collection of letters and many others, but I enjoyed and learned much from these. In most cases, they don’t require a technical knowledge of music. I tried to cover various areas, depending on which composer/period may interest you more. I hope I’ve helped!

When the family returned to Del Sol Valley after weeks of touring it was a relief to be finally back home. But nobody was more relieved than Eleanor - she had decided towards the end that she hated touring, and never wanted to do it again. And upon setting their bags inside the house, the first thing she did was announce her stance to her parents.
‘I’m NEVER doing a tour again,’ she proclaimed. ‘It’s the worst. I never want to sing for people again. You can all go without me next time.’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leo and Valerie were exhausted and scolded their daughter for her outburst.
‘If we tour again missy you will be coming as part of this family. Think of all the young girls who would kill for such an experience, to be adored by so many people on stage for being so talented! You have no idea how lucky you are,’ lectured Valerie. Daphne watched on in horror at the fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eleanor was so angry at her parents that she stormed away to her room. It wasn’t fair. Nobody ever asked her if she wanted to sing on stage! She did everything they asked of her, but nobody listened to her. She was sick of being held up next to Daphne all the time like they were the same person. She just wanted to be a normal kid.
And then she had an idea. A very wicked idea, but it would show her parents! She was sick of being part of their special little duo act that everyone would marvel at. Maybe they’d finally listen to her if she and Daphne didn’t look like the same person. Maybe it would ruin their perfect family act too - she could only hope.
So Eleanor took the scissors to her hair and cut it all off. Her parents were mortified.

Seinfeld: The 10 Worst Things Elaine Ever Did, Ranked
One of the ways that Seinfeld revolutionized the sitcom was letting its female lead – Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ unmarried, cigar-chomping feminist Elaine Benes – get in on the cast’s wacky antics.
Until Seinfeld came along, women in sitcoms were relegated to roles like the nagging wife or the buzzkill receptionist. Of course, there were exceptions, from Lucille Ball to Mary Tyler Moore, but these women had to give themselves strong roles – no one was giving them to them. Instead of standing at the side and rolling her eyes at what the guys were doing, Elaine was there alongside them. Here are The 10 Worst Things Elaine Ever Did, Ranked.
RELATED: Seinfeld: 9 Best Elaine Benes Quotes
10 Putting the Soup Nazi out of business
Tumblr media
All throughout “The Soup Nazi,” the characters will do whatever it takes not to bother the titular soup maker – Jerry even breaks up with his girlfriend when she gets banned from the soup restaurant – but Elaine drums on the counter and tells the Soup Nazi he looks like Al Pacino. She gets herself banned and then, when she comes across his recipes in an old armoire, she uses them to put him out of business.
The Soup Nazi might have been strict, he might have stricken fear into all of his customers, and he might have been a terrible salesperson, but at the end of the day, he was just a small business owner and those soups were his whole livelihood. Just because he hurt Elaine’s feelings, she destroyed his business.
9 Using an ink pen that made Mr. Pitt look like Hitler
Tumblr media
Mr. Pitt had already told Elaine not to use an ink pen while she was working for him and she’d completely ignored him and continued using one when it exploded all over her desk. As he tried to clean it up, he accidentally smudged a little bit of black ink on his upper lip and – paired with his beige-colored riding gear – it made him look an awful lot like Adolf Hitler.
And then she didn’t even tell him! She knew what he looked like and she let him walk out the door and go straight to an important business meeting with that black smudge on his upper lip.
8 Breaking up with Tony because a rock-climbing accident disfigured his face
Tumblr media
Seinfeld fans remember Elaine’s one-time boyfriend Tony as the guy that Jerry called a “mimbo” (a “male bimbo”). George was obsessed with him and they went rock-climbing together. While George was trying to get Tony one of the sandwiches he made, he forgot to tie his rope up and Tony ended up falling a great height, head-first, onto a rock.
This accident got Elaine to admit that she didn’t want to date someone that she deemed unattractive, and with Tony’s face getting disfigured by his rock-climbing incident, she had to confess that she no longer found Tony attractive and didn’t want to be with him anymore. She immediately started working on a breakup strategy.
7 Making a priest think he was going to die
Tumblr media
David Puddy was Elaine’s on-and-off boyfriend for several seasons of Seinfeld, but the twist with this couple was that, unlike other on-and-off sitcom couples like Ross and Rachel or Leonard and Penny, we didn’t want them to end up together. At one point, Puddy disgusted Elaine by painting his face like the Devil to show off his fandom at a New Jersey Devils game.
RELATED: Seinfeld: 10 Times We Were All Elaine
Then, he yelled at a priest and petrified the poor guy. Later, Elaine visited the priest to see how he was doing, but because she was dressed a little like the Virgin Mary, it only terrified the priest even more.
6 Eating a piece of wedding cake worth $29,000
Tumblr media
In the episode “The Frogger,” while George was busy trying to preserve his high score on an arcade game, Elaine was in trouble at work for eating a piece of wedding cake she found in J. Peterman’s office. Since the cake was from King Edward VIII’s wedding to Wallis Simpson, it was worth $29,000.
The wedding threw the British Empire into a tailspin due to a British monarch wanting to marry an American socialite who’d already been married and divorced before. And pretty much all that remained of this historical event from 1936 was a piece of cake and Elaine ate it.
5 Coughing all over Peggy’s stuff
Tumblr media
This was a great response to slut-shaming. Elaine’s co-worker Peggy – who she worked with when she wrote fanciful narratives for the J. Peterman catalog – refused to go in the bathroom after her, because she’d seen a number of Elaine’s male acquaintances come in and out of the office and she thought she was dirty.
So, Elaine responded by going into Peggy’s office and coughing on her doorknob, rubbing her stapler all over her armpit, and sitting on her keyboard. Peggy, of course, was horrified by this – it was a classic example of Elaine getting some pitch-perfect revenge against one of her many enemies.
4 Getting Babu deported
Tumblr media
We don’t see Jerry on the road a lot in Seinfeld, because a comedian sitting in a hotel room isn’t as interesting as when he gets involved in cockfighting rings and bootlegging operations with his wacky neighbor. However, there were some hints that he often spent time on the road, like when Elaine was collecting his mail.
One of the envelopes contained Jerry’s Pakistani friend Babu’s visa application, but since Elaine didn’t notice this, Babu missed the deadline and got deported. Once again, Elaine’s negligence led to the destruction of somebody’s life. It was something of a pattern in Seinfeld.
3 Buying Jujyfruits on the way to see her boyfriend in the hospital
Tumblr media
This is a classic Seinfeld moment, but it was also pretty awful. Elaine was supposed to be meeting a guy at the movie theater, but the usher informed her that he’d been in a car accident and had to be rushed to hospital.
Instead of rushing off to the hospital to make sure he was okay, she stopped off at the concessions stand to buy a box of Jujyfruits. When she eventually got to the hospital with a mouthful of Jujyfruits, the guy realized what she’d done and decided to break up with her right there. It’s fair to say he made the right decision.
2 Kidnapping a dog
Tumblr media
To be fair to Elaine, she didn’t do this alone. She enlisted the help of Kramer and Newman and they did most of the dirty work – Newman grabbed the dog and Kramer abandoned it at a random house upstate. However, it was all based on Elaine’s idea.
RELATED: 10 Things That Only Real Seinfeld Fans Would Own
The dog was keeping her up at night with its barking, so her response was to put together a team to kidnap it (or would that be dognap?) and take it far away from the city. Since the dog got a piece of Kramer’s shirt from Rudy’s, they all ended up getting arrested.
1 Thinking about murdering the phone guy
Tumblr media
In the episode “The Maid,” when Elaine was having her phones replaced because Kramer’s fax machine made her old ones whir and beep constantly, she considered murdering the phone guy. He was working on the phone lines and she was standing behind him, idly playing with a candlestick. In a voiceover narration, we heard Elaine thinking to herself, “I wonder if anyone knows he’s here. If he just disappeared...would anybody notice?”
All she needed was a few moments with her own thoughts to start contemplating committing a murder. At the end of the scene, she tells him, “You know, I could’ve killed you, and no one would’ve known.”

Wanda Sykes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wanda Sykes (born March 7, 1964) is an American comedian, writer, actress and voice artist. She was first recognized for her work as a writer on The Chris Rock Show, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1999. In 2004, Entertainment Weekly named Sykes as one of the 25 funniest people in America. She is also known for her role as Barb Baran on CBS' The New Adventures of Old Christine (2006–10) and for appearances on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm (2001–11).
Aside from her television appearances, Sykes has also had a career in film, appearing in Monster-in-Law (2005), My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006), Evan Almighty (2007) and License to Wed (2007), as well as voicing characters in the animated films Over the Hedge (2006), Barnyard (2006), Brother Bear 2 (2006), Rio (2011), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) and Ice Age: Collision Course (2016).
Early life
Sykes was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, and raised in the Washington, D.C., area. Her mother, Marion Louise (née Peoples), worked as a banker, and her father, Harry Ellsworth Sykes, was a US Army colonel employed at the Pentagon. Sykes attended Arundel High School in Gambrills, Maryland, and went on to graduate from Hampton University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. After college, her first job was as a contracting specialist at the National Security Agency (NSA), where she worked for five years.
Sykes' family history was researched for an episode of the 2012 PBS genealogy program Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr. Her ancestry was traced back to a 1683 court case involving her paternal ninth great-grandmother Elizabeth Banks, a free white woman and indentured servant, who gave birth to a biracial child, Mary Banks, fathered by a slave, who inherited her mother's free status. According to historian Ira Berlin, a specialist in the history of American slavery, the Sykes family history is "the only such case that I know of in which it is possible to trace a black family rooted in freedom from the late 17th century to the present."
Career
Not completely satisfied with her role with the NSA, Sykes began her stand-up career at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC, where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience in 1987.
She continued to hone her talents at local venues while at the NSA until 1992, when she moved to New York City. Working for the Hal Leonard publishing house, she edited a book entitled Polyrhythms – The Musician's Guide, by Peter Magadini. Her first big break came when opening for Chris Rock at Caroline's Comedy Club.
In 1997, she joined the writing team on The Chris Rock Show and also made many appearances on the show. The writing team was nominated for four Emmys, and in 1999, won for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Special.
Since that time, she has appeared in such films as Pootie Tang and on TV shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2003, she starred in her own short-lived Fox network sitcom, Wanda at Large. The same year, Sykes appeared in an hour-long Comedy Central special, Tongue Untied. That network also ranked her No. 70 on its list of the 100 greatest all-time stand ups. She served as a correspondent for HBO's Inside the NFL, hosted Comedy Central's popular show Premium Blend, and voiced a recurring character named Gladys on Comedy Central's puppet show Crank Yankers. She also had a short-lived show on Comedy Central called Wanda Does It.
In addition to her film and television work, she is also an author. She wrote Yeah, I Said It, a book of humorous observations on various topics, published in September 2004.
In 2006, she landed a recurring role as Barb, opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus, on the sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine; she became a series regular during the series' third season in 2008. She also guest starred in the Will & Grace episode "Buy, Buy Baby" in 2006. She provided voices for the 2006 films Over the Hedge, Barnyard, and Brother Bear 2. She had a part in My Super Ex-Girlfriend and after playing in Evan Almighty, had a bit part in License to Wed. Sykes' first HBO Comedy Special, entitled Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired, premiered on October 14, 2006; it was nominated for a 2007 Emmy Award. In 2008, she performed as part of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Tour for LGBT rights.
In October 2008, Wanda Sykes appeared in a television ad for the Think Before You Speak Campaign, an advertising campaign by GLSEN aimed at curbing homophobic slang in youth communities. In the 30-second spot, she uses humor to scold a teenager for saying "that's so gay" when he really means "that is so bad".
In March 2009, it was announced that Sykes would be the host of a new late-night talk show on Saturdays on Fox, The Wanda Sykes Show which was scheduled to premiere November 7, 2009. In April 2009, she was named in Out magazine's "Annual Power 50 List", landing at number 35.
In May 2009, Sykes was the featured entertainer for the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, becoming both the first African American woman and the first openly LGBT person to get the role. Cedric the Entertainer had been the first African American to become the featured entertainer in 2005. At this event, Sykes made controversial headlines as she responded to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh's comments regarding President Barack Obama. Limbaugh, in reference to Obama's presidential agenda, had said "I hope he fails". In response, Sykes quipped: "I hope his [Limbaugh's] kidneys fail, how 'bout that? Needs a little waterboarding, that's what he needs."
Her second comedy special, Wanda Sykes: I'ma Be Me premiered on HBO in October 2009. November 2009 saw the premier of The Wanda Sykes Show, which starts with a monologue and continues with a panel discussion in a similar format to Bill Maher's shows Real Time with Bill Maher and Politically Incorrect.
She appeared as Miss Hannigan in a professional theatre production of Annie at The Media Theatre in Media, PA, a suburb 25 minutes southwest of Philadelphia. Her first appearance in a musical, she played the role from November 23 – December 12, 2010, and again from January 12–23, 2011. She voices the Witch in the Bubble Guppies episode "Bubble Puppy's Fin-tastic Fairlytale Adventure".
In 2012, Sykes role the voice of Granny in Ice Age: Continental Drift, and In 2016, she was returned voice of Granny in Ice Age: Collision Course from the Blue Sky Studios' "Ice Age movies".
In May 2013, Sykes was a featured entertainer at Olivia Travel's 40th anniversary Music & Comedy Festival in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
In 2013, Sykes appeared in eight episodes of Amazon's Alpha House, a political comedy series written by Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau. Sykes plays Rosalyn DuPeche, a Democratic Senator from Illinois and the next door neighbor of four Republican senators living together in a house on Capitol Hill. Sykes will also appear in Season Two, which is filming over the summer of 2014.
Personal life
Sykes was married to record producer Dave Hall from 1991 to 1998. In November 2008, she publicly came out as a lesbian while at a same-sex marriage rally in Las Vegas regarding Proposition 8. A month earlier, Sykes had married her partner Alex Niedbalski, a French woman, whom she had met in 2006. The couple also became parents on April 27, 2009, when Alex gave birth to a pair of fraternal twins, daughter Olivia Lou and son Lucas Claude.
Sykes only came out to her conservative mother Marion and father Harry when she was 40, who both initially had difficulty accepting her homosexuality. They declined to attend her wedding with Alex, which led to a brief period of estrangement, but have since reconciled and are now proud grandparents to the couple's children.
During a September 19, 2011, appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Sykes announced that she had been diagnosed earlier in the year with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Although DCIS is a non-invasive "stage zero breast cancer", Sykes had elected to have a bilateral mastectomy in order to lower her chances of getting breast cancer.
Sykes splits time living in both Los Angeles and Media, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.
Activism
Sykes has publicly expressed being devastated after California voters passed state Proposition 8. She said: "with the legislation that they passed, I can’t sit by and just watch. I just can’t do it." She has continued to be active in same-sex marriage issues hosting events and emceeing fundraisers. She has also worked with PETA on promoting dog anti-chaining legislation in her home state.
She has been an outspoken supporter of Detroit's Ruth Ellis Center after the organization's staff sent Sykes a letter asking her to visit during her 2010 tour's stop in Detroit.
Awards
Sykes has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmys, with one win (in 1999) for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special". In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic". She won a Comedy Central Commie Award for "Funniest TV Actress in 2003". In 2010 she won the GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award. In 2015 she won the Activism in the Arts honor at the Triumph Awards.
