Robb can’t know. That’s the first rule of Sansa and Theon’s relationship. Robb can’t know.

And if Robb can’t know, then no one can know because if anyone finds out it will get back to Robb and that would be capital-B Bad. 

The problem is, it’s getting harder to keep it a secret. It hadn’t been so bad at first. The sneaking around, the coy looks, the stolen kisses -- it was actually kind of fun for awhile. But things are different now. They’ve been doing this for almost three months and it’s starting to get on Theon’s nerves that he can’t hold Sansa’s hand in public or throw his arm across her shoulder while they’re all watching a movie or kiss her goodbye at the end of the night.

But Robb would never understand and Theon can hardly blame him for it. Theon’s never been one for relationships, preferring the love-em-and-leave-em style of romance to anything serious, and Sansa has had a string of bad relationships that have made Robb even more protective than the average big brother.

He can only imagine what Robb would have to say if he found out and none of it is good. If he had a younger sister, he wouldn’t want her dating someone like Theon, either.

But it’s different, this thing with Sansa. It had somehow simultaneously taken him by surprise and been the most obvious thing in the world. It was like one day, after knowing each other for years, they’d looked at each other and something had just clicked into place. 

He doesn’t want to lose her, but he doesn’t want to lose Robb either and so he has to make a decision. He and Sansa can’t keep sneaking around forever, it won’t last. Already, the excitement of it is wearing off and the stress beginning to set in. Something’s gotta give, and soon, or it’ll ruin them.

Which is why Theon is standing outside of Robb’s apartment, psyching himself up to knock on the door. He and Sansa had talked about it and he’d convinced her it was better for him to talk to Robb alone. Mostly, he just doesn’t want her to be there when he inevitably gets punched in the jaw.

Theon takes a deep breath, before raising a fist and pounding on the door. He waits to hear Robb’s voice call, “It’s open!” before pushing his way inside.

It’s the early evening, and Robb’s apartment is dimly lit. He’s sitting at the dining table with a desk lamp on, books and papers spread out all around him. He looks up when Theon walks in and let’s out a huff, sitting back in his seat and running a hand through his hair.

“Remind me again why I decided to go to law school?” he asks.

“Something about helping people,” Theon replies, taking a seat across the table from him. “I can never really remember.”

Robb chuckles. “What’s up?”

Theon sighs, right to it then. “There’s uh,” he stammers. “There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

Robb eyes him curiously. “Everything alright?”

“Yeah,” Theon nods. “Everything is... well, kind of great, actually.”

“Okay,” Robb replies. “Then why do I feel like you’re about to give me bad news?”

Theon swallows. “Well, I’ve kind of being seeing someone.”

Robb’s eyes go wide. “Like, a girlfriend?”

“Yeah,” Theon nods. “A girlfriend.”

“Never thought I’d see the day,” Robb laughs. “So, is it serious?”

“Still kind of early,” Theon replies. “But I think so... I hope so.”

“Well, that’s great!” Robb grins at him. “Who is she? Anyone I know?”

Theon takes a deep breath, meeting Robb’s eye when he says, “It’s Sansa.”

The grin slowly slides off Robb’s face, replaced with a look of surprise. Theon’s heart is pounding so hard in his ears he barely hears Robb when he asks, “As in, my sister, Sansa?”

It’s a stupid question, of course -- how many other Sansas do they know? -- but Theon nods anyway. “Yeah.”

“How long?” Robb demands, voice low.

“About three months,” Theon answers, watching him closely.

He sees something in Robb’s jaw tick, but he doesn’t respond, not right away. Finally, after a long moment of silence, Robb nods his head and simply says, “Okay.”

“Okay?” Theon asks, unsure. “That’s it?”

“Look,” Robb sighs. “Her last two boyfriends both left her with black eyes, but I know you’re not the kind of guy who would do that.”

Damn straight, he wouldn’t. Theon’s blood still boils when he thinks about Sansa’s exes, despite the fact that she broke up with the most recent of them more than two years ago.

“And,” Robb goes on after a moment. “I remember something she told me after she finally left Ramsay, that she hadn’t even really liked him, it was just that Joffrey had messed her up so bad she thought it was what she deserved.” Robb gives his head a shake here before looking Theon full in the face again. “But if you two are together, than she must know better than that, now.”

Theon looks at him in surprise and Robb gives him a half-smile. “You’re a good guy, Theon. I know you don’t always believe that, but you are. You’re my best friend and I trust you.”

Theon gives a short laugh, mostly just a release of tension, before replying, “I was honestly expecting you to hit me.”

Now Robb laughs, too. “I’d be lying if I said the thought didn’t cross my mind for a second there,” he tells him. “But that’s just older brother instinct. Mostly, I’m just surprised you managed to keep it from me for three months.”

“It wasn’t easy,” Theon replies, a smile beginning to lift the corners of his mouth as the relief sets in.

Robb smiles, too, before pointing a finger at him and giving him a serious look. “But listen, you hurt her, and I still might.”

Theon nods, his own smile not fading. “I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about.”

Hey Sayruq, I wonder what's your take on Rickon in the next books. Personally I don't think he'll die in them (I hope at least) but what do you think?

I hope he doesn’t die either. I hope he is one of those characters GRRM said they should have lived. GRRM also said that we will see unicorns in TWoW so chances are Rickon is coming back to the story in a big way. Osha apparently has an expanded role and since GRRM wrote in one of the scripts (I think it was 4x02) that we’ll be getting direwolves versus Ramsay’s hounds, chances are Rickon will be at Winterfell and the Northerners might rally around him and Sansa since I’m starting to believe that she’s the Girl in Grey. I’m also starting to think that King Rickon is a possibility but not a strong one because of Robb’s will. I don’t want any more Starks dying but it’s a GRRM move to have Sansa and Jon watch Rickon die. It’s tragic because he is so young and because Sansa and Jon have already suffered so much.

I do hope that he has a shaggy dog story where he returns to Winterfell and his siblings come back home to him and even though he doesn’t remember them very much, he feels better.

I love how the asoiaf fandom has dropped their expectations from "what if he drops the book" to "what if he drops a chapter".

It’s just sad. We’re all defeated and resigned.

But the evil santa has been milking the Stoneheart/Brienne/Jaime cliffhanger for too long and only made it worse in ADWD.

We didn't even get info on the motives, the build up to his identity, his intentions, the symbol of the white walked and all that, we barely touched NK's backstory. He really was a lame, boogey man type of villain. I'm ??? disappointed but not surprised I guess...

D&D don’t know because Martin didn’t tell them (or they didn’t ask) and they couldn’t come up with anything.
