𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄 : a long overdue overview of miranda’s jewish identity and past. there are many jewish narratives. this is not an american/israeli ashkenazi one, because miranda is neither american or israeli. there will be differences of perception. it’s specifically intended to further the narrative themes explored on this blog, rather than being an identity brought up only once in the book and completely ignored in the movie. i’m not jewish, so feel free to address any concerns about this meta in my askbox or DMs. most information is based on personal research, the book ‘judaisms: a twenty-first century introduction to jews and jewish identities’ by aaron j. hahn tapper & my intro to judaism classes.
𝐀 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐊𝐄𝐓𝐂𝐇 : miranda’s background is galician jewish, a region part of the austrian-hungarian empire before world war one and in the inter-war period the second polish republic. her father ( chaim neumann, °1925 ) immigrated to london after the shoah. this is not a topic that will be explored, but it is an intrinsic part of her family history, and it does affect her. her family, to this day, is hasidim, following the pshevorsker rebbe ( currently based in antwerp, though part of the community is also found in london ) to be precise. the pshevorsk dynasty has close ties with the more known satmar dynasty and is characterized by a religious antizionism.
𝐀 𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 : i’ve elected to drop the whole princhek spiel weisbeger yeeted into the book in favor of a name that is regionally and historically sound. from now on, miranda’s birth name is miriam neumann, neumann chosen to symbolically represent her being a ‘new man’ in the secular world. from where does the priestly surname come then? the neumanns are kohanim : her patrilineal descent can be halakhically traced back to aaron. the kohanim were the priests of old, and are still beholden to a slightly different community status. the surname today can be unrelated to the status as a descendant of aaron, hence the difference between her birth name and her current name.
𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐅𝐒 : miranda is not an atheist, but subscribes to many of the theological beliefs jewish people hold. however: an important part of judaism is the emphasis on ritual action rather than belief vis à vis christianity. this, of course is the big, hot potato. she does not follow halakhah and has left the community, but in her eyes, it’s either that, or nothing at all. a large part of her black-white position originates from her lack of familiarity with different jewish movements such as conservative (masorti), humanistic, reform, … judaism. a future arc where she confronts her past might result in taking an intermediate position & telling caroline and cassidy their family history. the twins were not raised jewish. however, the chances of this confrontation are rather low, close to nihil.
𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐘 , 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓 : more important than all of this background information is miranda’s relationship to this identity as an once-hasidic woman. she has left it all behind in order to pursue a different life, but her past still influences her present, something she is unwilling to process and accept. she refuses to talk about it, and while she hasn’t consciously done one big cover-up (someone who’s really willing to dig in her life, can find out), she’s not keen on people finding out about her life either and actively tries to avoid the jewish neighborhood of antwerp (where many of her family members live, especially during jewish holidays) and london due to an unwillingness to actively confront her past.
part of this is closely tied together with her intense privacy and her vision on art and fashion journalism. another part is her deep struggle with this past. she is not the stereotype of the self-hating jew, but rather, this results from a postmodern shattering of one, uniform identity. she experiences an impossibility to reconcile a multitude of identities, namely, her status as the most important person in fashion, being lesbian and being hasidim. this theme of identity will be touched upon in future metas.
