After finishing Nona, I'm more convinced than ever that beating John, punishing John, killing John, it doesn't matter. It's not the point, and it would ultimately mean nothing.

Ten thousand years ago, the most important thing to John was punishing the people who had destroyed the Earth. They were trying to escape the consequences while leaving everyone else to die, and John decided that he had to stop them at any cost.

Choosing to focus on John as the end goal is making exactly the same choice he did. There is a universe of suffering out there, and it would kill the solar system to do it, but the most important thing is that this one bad actor has to die.
