HFW: Realistic Gameplay

I'm not sure how many people do this, but I like to approach my HFW gameplay to make the experience as realistic as possible. Here are a few of the considerations I keep in mind while playing to ensure my timeline is accurate to the game's storyline. :)

[⚠️ Warning! Some light spoilers are referenced ahead.]

ON SLEEP:

How long can Aloy reasonably go without sleep? Maybe 48 hours, but the high-intensity work she does requires dexterity & focus, so her accuracy & analytical abilities diminish the longer she's awake.

When she's desperate, or thiiiiis close to her goals, she likely gets tunnel vision, and gameplay gets a bit sloppier. (ie. Latopolis 😬)

Plus, the world is way more DANGEROUS for people at night! Humans are not a naturally nocturnal species, even if Aloy's stealth approach excels in the cover of darkness. She's also probably a little ~off~ in her circadian rhythm because she's one of a very few future humans exposed to blue light, lol.

ON FOOD:

Let's assume she's fed when she stays at any given settlement, but out in the wilds, she should be eating every day.

This means with a small food pouch, she can really only be out in the wilds for ~3 days without having to hunt her own meals. (Which no doubt, she can do, but do your really think Aloy has the time or patience to be cooking while she's saving the literal world? Nah.)

ON TRAVEL:

Along the way, I have to ask myself: how much does the side quest matter? How time-sensitive is it? Is it already on her existing route?

I try to WALK through settlements to A) not appear insane, B) accurately simulate the time she would actually spend there.

Can she really sprint all day long?? In this house, we jog. ("most humans can store about 20 miles’ worth of glycogen in their muscles." - NYT)

I don't love riding machines unless it's a long distance or an urgent situation. (ie. Sprinting back to the Base from Tilda's house) The reason for this is because:

A) you alert literally every machine around you, and I prefer to play a stealth approach

B) Riding is associated with Rebel activity, so you'd likely meet resistance from Tenakth locals.

C) not every path is cut out for riding (ie. On Lowland paths, her steed is likely too heavy & might get mired in the swamp / Riding in the Desert during the day, the metal would burn the everliving sh*t out of her.)

ON WEATHER:

In the Desert, I try to sleep during the day & travel at night. It's way too hot to be out during the height of day—even if it's around late October when she's there.

A little rain never hurt anybody, but major storms require cover & a wait-out period. I once got stuck in Sky's Sentry for half a day while I waited for an AETHER-driven storm to die down.

In my gameplay, it's November when Aloy turns up in Sky Clan territory (Yosemite Valley) which means it's freezing at night!

ON TIME:

I track calendar days while I'm playing to make sure I'm within GAIA's estimated ~3 month climate collapse timeline estimate. (Note that she doesn't give this estimate until Aloy discovers the Base, a little over 1 month into gameplay.)

Aloy is probably stuck in Stone's Echo for ~2 weeks healing her ribs. "Most broken ribs heal on their own within six weeks" (Mayo Clinic) But there's no way Aloy has that kind of patience. PLUS I'd bet big money when GAIA made her, she was given some cool genetic boosts that make her heartier than most naturally-born humans. In my game, I took her on some pretty chill missions back to Chainscrape afterward to give her more time to heal.

The game is literally set up to have us experience the seasons as we navigate the world over ~4-6 months!! (ie. The trees are changing color in Chainscrape when we begin in early Autumn / The Riverhymn side quest tells us it's the first of the winter bloom / There is snow in Yosemite Valley.)

From Embassy to Singularity, my gameplay took 132 Days (~4 months). I still have some side quests & errands to finish up, so if you try and complete all tasks before the Singularity, you're probably looking at 5-6 months total.

Okay, that's all I can think of off the top of my noggin, but I'd really love to hear if anyone else has some rad realistic constraints they like to add to the game! :)

1. How many works do you have on A03?

Ninety five.

2. What's your total A03 word count?

1,840,502 (and counting...)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently? The Witcher. I do have a few other WIPs for other fandoms but we'll see if they ever see the light of day. Previous fandoms include The Worst Witch 2019, Criminal Minds, plus a few one-shots in a few other fandoms. But those are the big ones.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Pearl Diving (hells yeah the Lesbians win again), A Night with the Queen, Veiled Truths, Chaos Thy Name is Circe, Survival Skills.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Almost always...mainly because I feel extremely guilty if I don't (so if you have ever commented and didn't get a reply in return, don't worry. I still remember. It haunts me.) but also because I genuinely love geeking out with fellow fans. I legitimately have made some amazing friends (and also met the love of my life!) through conversations that started simply through fic comments.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Oof...I definitely went through an angst phase so there are plenty of contenders. The Hunter's Remorse (24), Cassandra's Lament, The Unknown Known (both Battlestar Galactica), Walking Dictionary (Criminal Minds), Heart to Ashes to Stone (Game of Thrones), Long May We Reign (Reign), and Orbis Incognitus (The Walking Dead)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All That Glitters, Veiled Truths, Monstrous, pretty much anything I've written since about 2018ish.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

oh god. once, yes. in the Criminal Minds fandom. Granted, I pulled a surprise cliffhanger that, looking back, I would have breadcrumbed more--but I got SO MANY PEOPLE on ffnet screaming at me and generally being abusive because I *dared* to put a character in danger. it genuinely upset me so much that I stopped writing for a long time.

9. Do you write smut?

Absofuckinglutely.

10. Do you write crossovers?

I think once or twice? But I'm more of an AU kinda gal.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of. But I did have someone lift very specific ideas from my fic (i.e. an AU where a certain character was given a very specific nickname and occupation, which another author then took and used in their own AU), and ngl, it made me feel hella weird. For the record, I wouldn't have minded it if they had simply put in the author's notes: "hey this idea was inspired by Mim, in her fic xyz". I didn't need them to come formally ask for permission or anything like that. But to see it in the wild and see readers commenting on their "originality" really put me off that writer as a person tbh (granted they're sus af for entirely other (worse) reasons too so this only solidified my feelings).

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I know of. I have had readers who weren't fluent in English run my fics through translators for Arabic and French, which I thought was hella cool.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I don't think so? Honestly don't remember.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

God. ALL TIME? Idk. I do love me a dynamic of "A thinks they're unlovable and B is the most patient and loving person alive", so definitely ships like Hackle and Cal/Eist are my top faves.

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Some of my old Criminal Minds stuff.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Characterization.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Pridefulness over my characterization. And also...I am a fucking calathea of mental health and creativity. Everything must be *just so* or I cannot write. No messy house, no loud noises, no stress, no sickness, no dishes in the sink, no work emails to answer, NADA. Otherwise we shrivel up and die. Fun stuff.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I have, and knowing my insane ass, I most likely will again. Sometimes it's just fun. But ya gotta actually know the language and be 1000% certain about what you're saying.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Oh god. I think it was Cats. Yes. The musical.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

This is like asking a mother which child is her favorite 😅 I have a different relationship with each story, and love them each equally but in totally different ways. I will say that my favorites to re-read for comfort myself are: All That Glitters, Veiled Truths, Monstrous, and A Night with the Queen.

Harry sat at his desk, his left leg bouncing incessantly. Wild eyed, he checked the clock.

02.12 AM.

Fuck, he thought, teeth already gnawing at the skin around his thumbnail. He could feel his eyes itching, begging for sleep, and still, he chanced a desperate glance at his empty coffee cup. 

It was a bad idea, he knew it was. But, the alternative…? 

God, it seemed so much worse.

Again, his mind replayed it. 

The sound of his handmade, glove leather Italian shoes clicking steadily against the pedestrian crossing. The screech of tires. A familiar arm pushing him out of the way as he hit the safety of the sidewalk with a thwack! Louis Tomlinson’s stupid, irritatingly handsome face marred with worry and anger, appearing in his dimming vision as he yelled over his shoulder at the rogue idiot of a driver, “If he dies, I’ll sue you for every cent your sorry hide is worth, arsehole! Mark my fucking words!”

It was surprisingly in character, although Harry wasn’t exactly used to that Northern brogue speaking in defense of him. In fact, not an hour earlier, it had been used to cuss him out extensively, just as it had been every year since they’d met at Eton. (Being the sole heirs to the two most lucrative and competitive record labels in Britain did not fast friends make.)

He sighed at the memory and, reflexes understandably addled by thirty-two consecutive hours of wakefulness, he stupidly, stupidly allowed his eyes to fall closed. The effect was immediate.

Louis, drenched in dirt, blood, and rain, heaving as he protectively held a limp Harry to his chest, war raging around them. ‘I’ll get you out of here, my love. I swear I will.’

Louis, dressed in medieval armor, leaning against the door frame of an opulent bedroom, arms crossed over his chest and smirking at Harry, who was happily laying, naked and wanting, in his bed.

Louis bathed in sunshine, face glowing with happiness, leaning down slowly to press a smiling kiss to Harry’s lips under the shade of an apple tree. 

Harry’s eyes shot open.

“Fu-uck,” he groaned, fingers frustratedly digging into his own curls.

Louis, Louis, Louis, Louis. 

Every single time he closed his eyes since the accident, fucking Louis, in every raunchy, bodice-ripping, historical fantasy Harry could think of, no less. It was ridiculous.

And, apparently, a real thing. Transference (thank you, Google); a trauma response, where a victim suddenly falls in love with— (“Fantasizes over,” Harry corrected determinedly, out loud) —the person who saved their life. Normal. Perfectly normal. And yet, still extremely inconvenient, given Harry’s savior also happened to be his lifetime rival.

But, like, whatever. No big deal, Harry reasoned, easily. He’d see his therapist, pop a few pills and get over the fantasies, no one the wiser.

Except, maybe, for the part where they didn’t really feel like fantasies, per se. They felt like… well… memories.

— Or, what is Harry meant to do when it turns out the person he’s hated all his life is actually the love of all his… other lives?

The hardest part of writing a fic is about as hard as writing an answer lmao. There are so many little things that can stifle creativity, insecurities that build mental blocks, general life happening and not getting a chance to get the words out before it fades away back to the void. On top of all that, the hardest part for me is if I don't do my characters justice. Since my fics are still in progress, I'm in a constant state of worry that the voice/message of the story gets lost by the time I hit the publish button. I encourage taking breaks and making time to re-read my fics so I can understand my character all over again and continue to edit/write to complete their stories in a that satisfies their entire journey.

One of my favorite comfort fics (and I'm not being biased here, I've read it many many times) is "A Light Touch." It's so well written, the pace is great, and the catharsis. JESUS. It just always hits when I'm reading it again.
