Let's Talk about TLOK book 3 finale
An analysis on its writing and narrative choices.
We all know that is the best season but what make the final episodes so epic? As I like to say, is when words became art.
1. The script.
The Narrative of the season is the best alongside with season 1. The choices they make, the pacing, the development but most importantly: The Stakes. They were all there.
Sure, we saw Tarrlok murder/suicide in season 1 and Korra being sad in front of a cliff (as I interpreted as she being suicidal but nothing about that is canon so) but we didn't saw the air being sucked outta someone's body.
And the death of the earth Queen is the exact point where everything changed. Everything could happen at that point. Right after, Tenzin was almost beaten to death and I remember the fandom panicking about it. He didn't but P'Li blew her own head and Korra's torture was really hard to watch.
We got happy when Korra fought back and almost was able to kill Zaheer but then we remembered that she was highly poisoned. And after all we saw the last 3 episodes... everything could happen
Also, at that time, a lot of people didn't know we would have a next season. Honestly I don't remember if Korra was renewed before, during of after season 3 but I remember a lot of fans freaking out thinking that was the end. And if the fans simply forgot we would have a next season so Korra, obviously wouldn't die, it shows how good was the writing of the season since we were all so sunken on what was about to happen that we couldn't think on the future.
2. The masterpiece on animation and soundtrack.
It's been almost 10 years and the show didn't age a day. The choreography of the battles also helped to raise the takes and also tell us a story: How the Krew learn how to fight against the Red Lotus. From the most obvious of Bolin lavabending ex machina, Mako aiming in Ming Hua water arms before she could be able to use them against him and Jinora showing Zaheer the power in number, what exactly means being united as one.
And the soundtrack omg I listen and still get emotional to this day. When Korra is suffocating and the music goes from dark to soft, the airbenders theme (a version more emocional and sweet of the Avatar Aang's theme) . This is cinema! This is art!
The Legend of Korra is such a underrated masterpiece

Let’s Talk About: Domestic Winchesters
As most of you know, I love domestic Winchesters. I always enjoy scenes where they boys arent out chasing a lead and are just sitting at home or in a motel room being brothers.
I’ve been thinking about what my favorite thing is that they do “off the clock” and it has to be cooking for each other. Dean seems to be more of a cooking enthusiast, I mean he even loves his apron, but Sam also cooks. Not only do they cook for each other, but neither ever complains about the food. In fact, they act as though it’s the best food ever!
I refer to how much Sam enjoyed Dean’s home cooked burger in S8 “Trial and Error” and how Dean needed a moment alone with the grilled cheese Sam made him in s10.
I think this touches me so much because cooking is my love language. I love cooking for people, especially those I love, and it makes me happy when they enjoy my food.
In s15, A Hero’s Journey, Sam is cooking dinner, and even though it got ruined, I couldnt help but see what he was cooking. He had a chicken roasting in the oven, rotini boiling in the pot, a pan of tomato sauce simmering and the fixins for a salad on the counter, featuring red, green and yellow peppers. There is so much love and comfort in that dinner. Very well rounded, and hearty for 2 big dudes, and nothing screams “I care about you” more than having 3 colors of peppers!
Dean’s s8 burgers were also very special. The werent just thrown together, they were nice and thick with lettuce and tomatoes and a big brioche bun which appeared to have melted butter washed on top. Sam lovded it so much he took it on the road with him!
Its been nearly 2.5 years since SPN ended and I still watch and think about Sam and Dean all the time. If you’d like me to talk about something SPN related that interests you, message me or send me an Ask and I’ll post more “Let’s Talk About” themes,
Feel free to jump in folks!

let’s talk about Roe vs Wade
Roe vs Wade is a Supreme Court ruling made on January 22nd 1973 and is the ruling that has upheld the prevention of abortion bans across America. Abortion is a very sensitive topic, and there are many people calling for a total ban on abortion, regardless of circumstances.
Roe vs Wade found creating state regulation on abortion infringed on a woman’s right to privacy, meaning that no individual state could place a total ban on abortion. It was deemed to contradict the fourteenth amendment which states “nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law”.
In America they have a codified and entrenched constitution - this means it is written down and consistently referred to and is essentially a kind of “rulebook” from which all other judgements are made. The constitution is what is known as a sovereign body, this is the body with the most power (in the UK it is our Parliament). The Supreme Court is made up of 9 justices, always having an odd number so there is never a tie when making a decision. Each justice is appointed by a president and then has to be approved by the Senate to gain their seat. The Supreme Court’s job is to uphold the constitution and the laws written in it - theoretically placing them higher than the president themselves as they are the closest beings to the sovereign body. If a case is thought to be breaking the constitution it faces the Supreme Court (not every single one but I’m simplifying it) and they will deliberate and vote on whether they believe it to be unconstitutional or not and whether an amendment should be made to the constitution.
The constitution was written in the late 1700s and has been amended 27 times in the last 250 years. Arguably it is an outdated document but that’s a discussion for another time.
When the Supreme Court make a ruling it can lead to a constitutional amendment (rare) or it could set a precedent, and setting a precedent is exactly what roe vs wade has done.
So what is the leaked document?
On Monday the 2nd of May, a document was leaked from SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) detailing their apparent plans to overrule the Roe vs Wade decision. Because Roe vs Wade was not written into the constitution, it wouldn’t take more than a majority vote to overrule it and it is something that has been a threat since it was first ruled. The 7-2 majority ruling in favour of preventing states banning abortion, allowed women autonomy over their bodies, it allowed them to make the choices that were right for them and not be dictated by governments who they didn’t support. But it also created an uproar of people who thought this was wrong. Women going to planned parenthood have been screamed at and verbally abused for making this decision for themselves (not to mention that planned parenthood does more things than abortion and contraception). And no woman wants to have an abortion. A woman wants an abortion the same way an animal in a trap wants to chew off its own leg.
In the leaked document it was shown that a majority ruling of 5-4 had ruled to overturn the Roe vs Wade decision, allowing states to regulate abortions as they wish. This decision was made by the 9 justices, 6 of whom are male and 3 of whom are female. There were 4 men and 1 women who voted in favour of overruling the case and all 5 of them were appointed by republican presidents. The most recent being Neil Gorsuch who was appointed by Donald Trump.
If this document is followed through there have been 26 states who are confirmed/highly likely to place a total ban on abortion, with no exceptions or exemptions. This means that you cannot get an abortion under ANY circumstances, including rape, incest or damage to the mother. That’s right, your doctor can tell you that carrying this baby to term will kill you and you will still not be allowed an abortion. In fact, in some states you can be charged with murder and the doctor can be charged with accessory to murder if you try. These will each get you longer sentences than what the rapist would get.
The main argument against abortion is “pro-life”. They are anti abortion because they claim that the foetus has a heartbeat and therefore having an abortion is “murder”. However, these groups only place their focus on an unborn cluster of cells. They do nothing to help or raise awareness about the number of children growing up in orphanages, foster care or unstable home environments. These are children who have lives they are currently living and can feel pain, however, pro lifers choose to place their attention elsewhere and leave these children to suffer. If they were genuinely pro life, they would care about the lives of those who are actually alive, not an embryo that has barely developed gills.
Furthermore, any bans placed on abortion is unlikely to prevent abortions. Instead it will force women to travel outside of the state, it will increase the number of back alley abortions and coat hanger abortions. It will also increase the risk of infection and death in a country that already holds one of the highest maternal mortality rates.
Some current abortion laws in various states:
A Michigan judge has given a convicted sex offender joint custody of a child born to a women he raped when she was 12 years old.
Texas has already placed a ban on abortion from after 6 weeks. Some women may not even know they are pregnant by then.
In Georgia, if you miscarry you could be liable for second degree murder. This could get you 10 - 30 years in prison.
In Arkansas, rapists are allowed to sue their victims if the victim wants an abortion.
In North Carolina, consent cannot be withdrawn once sex starts.
In Ohio, using birth control such as pills, IUDs etc. that can stop the fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus is considered abortion.
Alabama already has a near-total ban on abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest. Doctors could face 99 years for providing abortions.
Some quotes from 2019 republican senators about rape:
“Rape is kind of inevitable like the weather. If it’s inevitable, relax and enjoy it.” - Clayton Williams
“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that thing down” - Todd Akin
“Rape victims should make the best of a bad situation” - Rick Santorum
“Even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something that God intended to happen.” - Richard Mourdock
“If a woman has the right to an abortion, why shouldn’t a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman? At least the rapist’s pursuit of sexual freedom doesn’t result in anyone’s death.” - Lawrence Lockamn
If the government actually cared like they claim to, they wouldn’t be regulating women’s bodies and blaming them for something that takes two people to do. They would be investing in quality sex education, more sexual health clinics and providing free contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies. But they don’t and they won’t and that is how you can tell that it is not about the baby but about having control over the woman.

You know I used to think "tumblr's absolute refusal to actually engage with the Trolley Problem in favor of insisting that there must be a third, morally pure option that doesn't require them to make a hard decision and anyone who asks them to make a binary choice is just a short-sighted idiot is really fucking annoying, but I guess it's not actually doing any harm".
Anyway that was before we asked tumblr at large to decide between "guy aiding a genocide but making progress elsewhere" and "guy who would actively and enthusiastically participate in a genocide and would also make everything else much, much worse for everyone elsewhere" and the response was that there must be a third, morally pure option that doesn't require them to make a hard decision and that anyone who asks them to make a binary choice is a short-sighted idiot.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.
you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.
you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.
don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.
if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.
you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:
how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
aren't you happy yet?

Let's talk about Avatar Studios
And what the hell is going on
1) I already talk about the risks of a new Avatar following up Korra so I won't go much further on this here. The problem is this new show already have to face 3 problems
1. Technology. Like, if it really will be 100 years after Korra, makes sense that the Technology will evolve a lot but more technology also means less mystic shit and the fandom love the mystic shit in the Avatar World.
Transform Avatar in some sfi looking show can be bite the ass of Bryke. A lot of fans already complain about Tlok modern world because there's less mystical stuff because of it, now imagine a Avatar where the technology evolve during 100 years.
2. Repetition. For the technology not evolve this much, something have to happen to the world, something that Korra wasn't able to prevent. So then we would have Roku - Aang arc all over again. The children of the Krew will be important to this new Avatar? It's tlok all over again. We will have modern sociological and political discussions? It's tlok all over again. We will have the classic hero journey, where he have to beat the bad guy at the end of the show? It's tla all over again
3. Characters. Tla characters are hella charismatic and the structure of their show help each one of them to develop. Tlok characters were able to sold themselves just with charisma since the storytelling structure of Tlok didn't allow the show to focus on each of them so their development is more off screen. The characters of the new show will have to match the charisma of the previous shows and not sound repetitive. I don't wanna look to a character and think to myself "oh, this is just like Katara". If they want to give us a new show, then give us truly new characters.
2) As a lesbian Poc I understand, respect and agree with the choice of bring more diversity to Avatar Studios but recast the cast is a wrong decision storytelling wise and c'mon...Dante did a stellar job as Zuko (just like the rest of the cast with their respective characters) so if he wasn't half asian he would get recast too? They were all also responsible to give life to your beloved characters, I wouldn't discard them like that.
Storytelling wise, each actor brings something new to a character, this can be good or bad. What if the interpretation of the new cast feels too different for the fandom to buy it? It's more than just a voice. Think about the Joker, James Bond, Superman....all have multiple actors playing the character and every actor brought something new with them, and because of that some are loved like Ledger and Daniel Craig and some are hated like Jared Leto.
Also, I don't want the new cast to just imitate the og cast, that would be disrespectful to their talent. They should simply just keep the cast if the actors wanted to go back and voice their characters and with the new upcoming movies and tv show, then they would search only for native and asian actors to play the new characters.
3) They are taking too much unnecessary risks because a new Avatar will divide the fandom just like Tlok did in 2012 and the fandom can also don't vibe with the new cast work(and I didn't even coment on the rumors they can change the animation style). Both of these things can flop Avatar Studios projects especially in a world were they have to compete with Rick and Morty and Arcane among other young adults cartoons.
So their job is to please the fans and please the main audience that can become a fan after the new projects, but too much changes can make the old fans go away, we saw that happen before with other franchises. And again, they will have to compete for audience with excellent Young adults cartoons
They should do the safe, conquer the fandom first and then start to taking risks and expand the show to newer audience. If they tried to please both all at once, they can ended up pleasing no one

Junji ito's magnus opus is, in pretty much everyone's opinion, Uzumaki, one of the best modern horror manga you will find. But have you ever noticed that even the narrative of the manga is a spiral? Once you see it, it's hard to unsee! I talked a bit about this in Lets talk about when Junji ito came to SDCC.
