Operator: They'll breed till they clog all the cooling pipes. The turbines will overheat, and the dam will explode.

Latimer: So? Rinse them out.

Operator: If we do that... the quagga will spread downstream into your waterways, infecting and eventually destroying all of your other facilities. Also, the EPA will fine us for intentionally releasing a dangerous species into the environment. The fines will be in the millions. The dam is shut down, sir. A full year to decontaminate it.

One of Us (Leverage 5+1)

A new fic for the Leverage Appreciation Weeks Event!

I’ll be posting one section a day this week leading up to the beginning of Leverage: Redemption on July 9th!!! Art is included in the text, ID at the end; summary and tags below. Hope you enjoy! :)

Amy met Alec Hardison first. He was the one that hired her. She had seen the "Help Wanted" sign in the window and immediately wandered in the door to see what positions--if any--were still available.

It had been a long day already, between college courses and looking for part-time employment. Her father had once again started pushing on her to prepare to take over the family business and stop wasting her time with art. So far, she had been able to keep some semblance of balance, but she feared that there would come a day that her parents would not support any education that did not lead to the MBA that they so desired. A part time job was one way to ensure that she could keep a certain level of autonomy, so Amy had been searching for the last week.

The Brew Pub was relatively close to campus, looked clean and safe, and, upon opening the door, Amy found that it smelled amazing. The rich aroma of spices and grease were underlaid with hops and alcohol in a pleasing blend. She had never thought a pub would smell welcoming, but this one did.

At three in the afternoon, it was somewhere between the lunch and dinner crowds, so there were only a few people scattered around the open space. Amy hovered near the door, unsure of whom to approach as she pulled a slightly creased copy of her resume out of her bag.

A waiter walking by with a tray of coffee cups paused near her. "You're welcome to sit anywhere."

Amy smiled, trying to present herself as professional and friendly. "I'm here about the help wanted sign, if there are still positions available."

The waiter looked over her shoulder and then whistled to catch someone's attention. Amy followed her haze to see a tall, very handsome black man look up at them both and then nod. The waiter tilted her head in the man’s direction, “Hardison’s the boss, and yeah, we could use more help. You can leave your resume with him.”

“Thanks,” Amy said to the waiter’s back as she continued on her trajectory.

The man watched her expectantly as she approached, and Amy took a moment to study him in return. He--the waiter had called him Hardison--Hardison should have been intimidating, but the kind intelligence in his eyes and relaxed, smiling expression immediately put her at ease.

“Alec Hardison.” He shook her hand and gestured for her to have a seat. Taking the chair opposite her, Hardison continued, “How can I be of assistance?”

“I would like to apply to work here.” Amy held out her resume, and watched as Hardison took a quick photo of it with his tablet and then passed it back.

“We are still hiring. What’s your prior work experience?” Instead of looking at her resume, Hardison’s eyes never left her face.

“I’ve never held a paid position, but I’ve been volunteering at a number of organizations since high school. I’m good with people, and a quick learner. My supervisors have all agreed to provide references; their contact information is on my resume.”

Hardison nodded and looked at his tablet, clicking around for a few moments. “You’re in school?”

“Yes. I can manage both a job and my course load.” She had to.

Hardison looked up at her, eyes shrewd. “Why are you wanting to work here?”

Amy sighed. This was where she usually had trouble, because she was honest. “I want a job so that I can save money for art classes and supplies.” It had nothing to do with the place. At least, at first. When she’d come in, though, Amy could suddenly imagine spending time here, working, people watching, sketching.

“Your parents aren’t supportive?” Hardison asked shrewdly.

Amy knew that from her resume that it was obvious that she’d never had to work before, that she had enough financial support that it wasn’t necessary for her or her family. It was another of the questions she dreaded. She straightened her posture. “My parents are supportive of a particular direction, but I need to know how to make my own way. I’d like to work here. I like people, watching them, working with them, helping them, and this looks like a place I could do that.”

A slow, bright grin crossed the face of the man opposite her. “I’ll need a few days to run the paperwork. You can start on Monday. Come in when you’re done with classes and we can set your schedule.”

Amy blinked. “You…?”

Hardison stretched a hand across the table. “Welcome to the team.”

Amy shook the offered hand, utterly off balance. It felt like a wall had fallen down, but she didn’t know how or why. She also didn’t know why she already trusted this man. Perhaps it was the smile and kind eyes.

“Thank you.”
