I like to think levi looks at hange and thinks comfort and stability or consistency. Considering hange is one of the few that came back alive and still maintained their eccentric personality. Excited to learn and to tell levi all about what they’ve learned because that’s bestie right there whether they admit it or not

oh yes. (by one of the few that came back alive i’m assuming you mean after no regrets??)

every scout in short believes in creating a world without the horror of the titans to explore freely, BUT i think hange really embodies that in how they present themself. they’re bubbly and excitable and UNABASHEDLY PASSIONATE about not just titans but the scouts’ whole mission. they’re unashamed.

but hange (and this is often missed by fans for some reason) isn’t stupid or an airhead??? they’re a scientist, and a scientist brave and/or crazy enough to study titans at that. like after nick was murdered, hange played up a whole sympathetic act in order to pick up on a clue that it was the interior MP that did it.

they're so childlike and eccentric and excitable, but the magnitude of everything they personally have been through, and the stakes of the scouts' mission, weighs just as heavily on them as any other scout. like after the titan is discovered in the wall.

(THEYRE TREMBLING ALL OVER😭)

furthermore they're canonically the SCARIEST when angry, including in this situation where they got very close to throwing nick off the wall. NOT EVEN LEVI IS AS SCARY FIROGJTIR this has nothing to do with their relationship im rambling sorry sorry

they're a reckless risk-taker which reminds me of someone else levi knows lol. interestingly levi never takes unnecessary risks so if hange is levi's comfort, then levi is their anchor lol

bit of a side note but undoubtedly hange reminded levi a lot of isabel. (and erwin w/ farlan, and then falco and gabi it’s true sue me)

one thing levi has criticized hange for is their propensity to run and hide (ie in the uprising arc... not included in the anime)

god this scene is so funny by the way

this comes back up during the rumbling, when hange proposes/muses that they and levi should just stay there and live together. (which makes hange surprisingly like jean, who was the most reluctant in the alliance to fight the rumbling.) levi asks where running and hiding is going to get them...

but hange's position as commander has changed them evidently. the rumbling is leagues worse than the uprising situation, but - and tho that's still what they wanted to do - they were already in the middle of building the cart to transport levi on. which seems to make him feel relieved.

so predictably, levi is the source of strength/stability/comfort for hange after post-RtS. levi looks to them to lead, for stability; they're the last veteran left too. no doubt he was there for them every step of the way.

aka they're both each other's comfort at that point.

so it's interesting to reflect on how their relationship has changed since levi started out ready to shank hange for listening to him, farlan, and isabel discussing their murder erwin plan reeling from their hurricane-force excitement, kind of getting unwittingly attached, and getting royally annoyed whenever hange did something dumb.

ie, almost breaking their neck when falling off that ladder to reach a book in that side story.

i might be a little feverish but little talks by of monsters and men sure hits different when you listen to it while thinking of season 4 to post canon levihan and i'm going to write an essay about it.

cool? cool.

so, hear me out. first verse:

I don't like walking around this old and empty house So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear The stairs creak as you sleep It's keeping me awake It's the house telling you to close your eyes And some days I can't even dress myself It's killing me to see you this way

that's levihan adjusting to life right after the battle of shiganshina, right?

i mean, the old and empty house and the noises it makes while they sleep represent the now near empty headquarters that they've lived in for a decade that's become haunted with all of their dead comrades' ghosts ; and that line some days i can't even dress myself that is, imo a pretty good match for hange's state of mind (who is no doubt struggling to adjust to their role as Commander) while levi has to watch them shoulder all the responsibility of facing this new world none of them imagined as it is, and knowing it's technically his fault they're in this position

There's an old voice in my head That's holding me back Well, tell her that I miss our little talks Soon it will be over and buried with our past We used to play outside when we were young And full of life and full of love Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear

now the analogies in this verse might be a little less obvious but bear with me. hange's old persona's is still in there, beneath that much more professional exterior they have to project in their new leading role, and so the other voice saying i miss our little talks to me could symbolize levi missing his crazy close friend (who does make a reappearance once in a while, thankfully, but is mostly concealed) because things aren't quite the same as they used to be between the two of them

and of course, hange is exhausted from that burden they inherited 4 years ago and doubting themself and their decisions (especially when things start to go south with eren and later his minions), and although levi can no doubt understand that, he's still loyal to them as his leader

and then. well then comes that bridge. and i'm gonna let the lyrics speak for themselves, aight?

You're gone, gone, gone away I watched you disappear All that's left is a ghost of you Now we're torn, torn, torn apart There's nothing we can do Just let me go, we'll meet again soon

Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around I'll see you when I fall asleep

okay i lied, i'm still going to point out that please hang around is a very obvious parallel to levi telling hange to keep watching, or possibly a reference to his last gesture towards them when they told him to let them go and look cool and he couldn't help himself and had to break everyone's fucking heart over that intimate version of their military salute.

the I'll see you when i fall asleep i feel could refer either to levi's hallucination of all the scouts veterans, or to the fact that he's hoping he gets reunited with them when it's his turn to die, many many years in the future after he gets the rest and peace they all deserved.

What? Levi’s monologue in Ch. 136 AOT

Posting crazy AOT working theories on the art blog b/c I draw so slow.. haha.

Call me a delusional shipper or whatever but.. what if Levi was saying he didn’t regret choosing Armin over Erwin because Armin’s eyes embodies the “sense of idealistic hope and wonder of what’s out there”. Just like survey corps and...just like Hange’s eye(s). ;)

There’s a frame of Levi telling Erwin to give up on his (arguably dead end) dream. One of Armin excitedly talking about his dreams to see the ocean with his friends and a similar scene of Hange excitedly talking among the survey corps.

Armin and Hange take on similar roles in their respective group in those two frames and in the next frames they’re in... their face are similarly filled with sparkly eyes. :D. Erwin is there too with a different face ‘-’.

There’s also this scene of when the survey corps visited Marley for the first time.

Writer's Duel ⚔️

So, for those of you who don't know, Sailor (@sixpennydame) and I arranged a little Writer's Duel. The rules were simple - reverse shipping. Sailor was challenged to write a Levi x Hange piece whilst I was asked to write some Levi x Reader. Shots fired - here we go.

Hope Is A Fledgling, Caged In The Soul Characters: Levi x Reader, Hange, Erwin Word Count: 1407 words

Every year, in late summer, the firm you work for hosts a charity ball at a grand estate. The house is a stately, nineteenth century red-brick affair surrounded by a breathtaking expanse of lavish gardens. On this warm evening the venue has all the splendour of a wedding reception, only lacking those soft, floral touches - the bouquets and elegant centrepieces and wide-brimmed hats and bobbing fascinators. But even without such frivolous details, there is that unmistakable magic created only by the gathering of unlikely people upon a beautiful night laden with possibilities. Somewhere, amongst the rich history of the manor house, the low lights and swish of elegant fabrics, there is the promise of wild and exciting things to come.

With all the champagne and heat and activity you find yourself craving fresh air. As the evening has cooled, the French doors leading to the terrace have been closed. Even so, after you have stepped outside, you can still hear the clatter of furniture from within as the circular tables and chairs are dragged to create room for the dance floor. Every so often the muffled sounds are punctuated by a burst of throbbing music. You assume that the speakers are being tested in readiness for post-dinner dancing.

You lean against the terrace’s narrow stone balustrade and savour the gentle breeze against your warm skin. Instinctively your hand moves to your clutch bag in search of cigarettes. It has been some months since you vowed to quit. Uselessly, you fiddle with the metal clasp knowing that there are none inside.

Instead your attention lingers upon the rolling greenery which surrounds the estate. Hidden paths sneak off under canopies of low-hanging branches. There’s a glow cast from lanterns suspended from the taller trees whilst fairy lights embellish the dark walls like tiny stars. Here and there, little whispers of romance beckon.

The music from within suddenly amplifies. As you turn, that’s when you see… him.

Levi closes the door softly, places his hands in the pockets of his grey suit and begins to walk towards you. The breeze stirs his dark hair. As his eyes meet yours, something unspoken within you lifts. Something winged and beating, something almost impossible to contain. And yet, you must, for Levi’s own solemn expression gives nothing away.

“Sorry about before.” He joins you, leaning his back against the balustrade. “...I had to go help them set up the karaoke machine.”

You utter a small gasp of laughter. “Really? I bet Oluo can’t wait to get on that!” You grin at him, Levi returning the gesture with a wry smile of his own.

“Yeah… except that it meant we didn’t get to finish our conversation.” Levi lightly scuffs a shoe against the granite. “I know it was bad timing, given… everything you said.” You look away, your face burning. Levi lifts his head to take in the night sky.

“I didn’t want to leave things that way. That’s why I was looking for you.”

It takes you a moment to drive down that dreadful feeling; to turn the key upon it. Hope.

“Well…” you answer finally, chancing a look at him. “...here I am.”

That sombre expression has resurfaced, and yet, there’s a warmth in Levi’s eyes. He studies you as though with perfect clarity; as though capable of reading your deepest secrets on the map of your skin. Then, almost perfectly on cue, a dreadful caterwauling begins.

You both gasp and wheeze at the noise. Something about Levi’s husky, breathless laughter makes you break into an even wider smile.

“That’d be Oluo’s opening piece,” he chuckles. Your laughter slows as you both lapse into contemplative silence. Levi looks out over the grounds and then turns to you, his face half in shadow. The glint in his eye has faded. In its place, there’s a shade of something akin to regret.

“Oh.” It’s all you can manage to say. “I see.”

The silence imposes itself between the two of you. You release your breath slowly. Those caged feelings have ceased all at once. Now you feel… nothing at all.

Levi is still watching you as though on the brink of an apology. The music and hubbub of enthusiastic voices filters through the closed doors. Outside in the chill air, the wall of silence seems insurmountable, obstructing every possibility before it has started from your lips. Almost as the strain nears breaking point, an ugly thought rears. Steeling yourself, you ask the question to which you fear the answer.

“It’s her… isn’t it?”

Your eyes dart to his face. Levi is gazing out over the darkened grounds. Then he dips his head by the smallest fraction.

You nod too, a sardonic smile curling upon your face.

“Have you heard from her? Do you even know when she’s coming back…?” Your intention is far from cruel. Even now there isn’t a single part of you that wants to hurt him. And yet the question hangs there between you like a blade waiting to slice the tension.

“...not yet.” Levi pushes himself away from the balustrade. Hands stowed within his pockets once more, he crosses to the far edge of the terrace. “At this rate, it’d be easier for me to fly out there than keep waiting…”

Without meaning to, Levi’s words bite into you. It takes every inch of your strength to flatten the emotion from your voice. It takes even more, an unthinkable amount of resolve, to remember how much his happiness means to you… even if you are not the bringer of it.

“I… hope you two work things out.”

There’s a scrape of gravel as Levi turns around to look at you. His eyes narrow in discomfort. With another shallow breath, your fortitude begins to crumble. The words fall unchecked before you can prevent them.

“And if I’m being even more honest… I hope that you don’t.” Envy rises like acid in your throat. You attempt to press your lips into a firm line but a tremble runs through them. You blink, the trees and terrace starting to blur before you.

“I hate feeling like this…” you utter in a voice brittle with defeat.

Levi approaches you, despite your secret longing to have him leave you alone under the empty sky. You turn your head away. With a small gasp of shock you feel his hand take yours. His palm is warm against your knuckles as his fingers curl beneath your own. His kindness is worse than his cruelty could be.

“It’ll pass.”

Your throat is too tight to speak. You press his hand back in reply.

Erwin jolted at the sudden rattle of the handle. As his office door opened, he half-rose from his desk and slammed the lid of his laptop. Levi crossed the threshold, eyes moving from the papers in his hand over to his superior.

“I brought the report…” Levi was frowning at the laptop upon which Erwin was nervously drumming his fingertips. “What the hell were you doing?”

“Mm?” Erwin’s eyebrows lifted, his chin resting in his other hand. “Oh, nothing important. Budget checks, board meeting arrangements... Thank you, Levi, that’ll be all.”

Levi placed the small pile of documents on Erwin’s desk and, choosing to say nothing more, began towards the doorway.

“Levi… have you heard from Hange yet?”

Levi stopped. He glanced over his shoulder, his expression sour.

“Not since her flight landed last Thursday.”

“Well… don’t give up.” Erwin gave a resolute nod. “It may seem hopeless but I’m sure she will message you when she can.”

Levi glanced away uncomfortably. He hesitated as though about to counter Erwin’s remark but, instead, pushed down upon the door handle and let himself out of the office.

Bonus:

A young woman let out a jubilant cry, causing several customers’ heads to whip around in panic. Even the baristas frowned over the clouds of steam which issued from their coffee machines.

“Iconic-Eyebrows has just dropped a new chapter!” She waved her phone in the face of her companion. “He said he wasn’t posting it until Thursday!”

Wrinkling their nose in derision, the woman’s friend began scrolling through their phone. Neither spoke a word as they read. Then, with an exasperated sigh, the woman’s companion threw themself back in their seat.

“Will they just get together already?” they huffed, “I know it’s a slow burn fic but why did he switch to ‘x Reader’? How many obstacles do you need in one story!”

... I'm sorry - I tried! But EVERYTHING IS LEVIHAN!

trans levi headcanons:

his mom introducing him as a boy anytime someone asked about her kid (which wasn't often, she was being careful after all)

kuchel telling him to always follow that line of conduct, just so he wouldn't have to live the life she lead (yeah male prostitutes are a thing too, but it's still easier to make a name for yourself in underground when you're a man bc susprise misogynia wasn't locked out of the walls or above ground)

kenny could never really tell bc the kid was a sack of bones anyway so he just taught him whatever the fuck he could and got the f out of there as the uncaring bastard he was

furlan knew from the start and was like "who gives a fuck he's the boss"

isabel found out after finding levi's period stash when she moved in and asked furlan if she should switch to calling levi sis, and furlan choked on his tea and made sure levi didn't overhear thet (and then made her promise to never ask that again)

erwin's eyebrows raised when he ran into him in the barracks' showers for the first time but he didn't say a word

hange barged into his room once when he was changing and laughed in shock, and before levi could get mad they took their own pants off, flashed him their dick and went "i can't believe we're both freaks, i thought it was just me!" and then left without asking whatever favor they were initially coming for

Imagine shipping Levi with another character: it must be tiring and frustrating to see him so loyal and devoted to a man you believe doesn't love him, instead of the person you ship. You know who I'm talking about 🤭

I don't mind Eruri, and I can see the appeal [I've even read the occasional fic, and rb quite a few fanarts], though that bunch can be intense in their delulu which I find a bit off-putting. I mean, it's okay to read canon with your ship-tinted glasses, I know I do, but there's a fine line between that and being so obsessed you start to believe there really is a hidden agenda and these two characters are indeed canon and pushing this view onto every piece of meta you come across ... some people need to go outside and touch grass.

I ship and let ship, kinktomato and all that, so if someone ships a notp of mine and has a kick out of it, good for them!

On that same note: Unpopular opinion, but as far as canon hints go, levihan is way more based than eruri. I'd even say LH is the most hinted-yet-unconfirmed ship in aot.

if you were here on tumblr fandom around 2015-2017. Maybe you know “julystorms” (mannatea now), she had a great blog and metas about levihan (and about the series in general). sadly she left the fandom four years ago due to she lost interest and some issues of the latest chapters of manga but still shes a banger along with DYFM. sorry for oversharing lmao.

sfdkjsdfja mannatea and dyfm are like levihan legends, i think pretty much everyone who ships levihan hardcore know of them despite when they joined the fandom here in tumblr, as their fics and fanarts are like the foundation of this ship. They are great, and I hope they are doing good wherever they are 💖

okay levihan is my fav ship but I'm realistic and I refuse to believe what doesn't make sense to me even if it's for my otp sake. So try to convince me.

why are you all trying to make a lot of meta out of the "dedicate your heart" scene " Hange is Levi's heart...He offered his heart to hange..." He clearly meant to encourage her and give her the power to remind her of her main goal, the purpose she's fighting for so he said the symbol of the survey corps and that wormed hang's heart and made her certain and determined with no fear or doubt I think that's the only meaning of it.

Hi anon!

I think the most significant part is that Levi put his fist over Hange's heart and not his own. Now, whether you wanna read that as Hange has Levi's heart or whatever, that's up to you. But it is obviously not a normal salute, it's much more personal. If Levi was just trying to be encouraging, why be so weird about it? He was straightforward and put on a brave face for Erwin, so why is it different with Hange?

this post talks about the difference between "give up on your dreams and die" vs "dedicate your heart" in more detail.

Also, Levi didn't have to remind Hange of anything. This was already her decision and she asks him to "please let me go," so that she didn't lose her resolve. She didn't even seek him out to say goodbye, Levi had to come to her. She was rushing to avoid him I think because if he really did ask "don't go," she would have had a much harder time with it.

And so he doesn't. He just says to dedicate your heart, but the hand over Hange's heart implies so much more. It's a "I know you know I know you know" situation and it's just so fucking sad. At this point, they've both expressed their feelings in their abnormal ways, but they both know they can never persue it because they both uphold their duties first.

I don't think the scene would have hit the same if Levi did a legit salute, all rigid and serious, just for Hange to laugh at him. The gesture is so intimate, whether platonic or romantic, it's clear their bond is strong. Hange laughs it off because it's all she can do not to cry.
