Sorry to be a Debbie-Downer, but I'm really feeling it tonight, guys. And I need to scream into the void until my voice is hoarse, and cry myself to sleep as I type.

Just this afternoon, my mom and I were joking that her dog, Raven, my TV buddy, would have to come with me when I eventually moved out, because...well, because she's my TV buddy.

But less than four hours later, we said a very unexpected and sudden goodbye to her. We don't know what happened. We don't know how or why she went downhill so fast, before we could even make it to the emergency vet hospital.

To make matters worse, we just said goodbye to Raven's best friend Lexi in October (old age) (she's in the urn on the shelf next to the tiger). And we said goodbye to my little old man Axel in Dec '21, about a week before my birthday (he was 17.5 years old, so I loved him for literally half of my life) (we spread some of his ashes in every state we drove through on a road trip after that Christmas, because he loved car rides, and now he's resting in a nice wooden box in my bedroom).

It's the grief, is what I think I'm rambling toward. It just stacks and stacks and stacks and stacks, and gee whiz, that heaviness hurts something fierce.

Anyways you can refer to me as either Poet or Lexi ( or any variation of those two nicknames, Poe, Lex, etc. ). I am nineteen years old ( as of June 2021, because I will no doubt forget to update this as I age so please feel free to do that math ) and go by any pronouns ( although I must ask if we are not close, please stick to she / they ). I'm currently in college pursuing a degree in english, with hopes of being an editor in the future. I've been writing since I was eleven years old and like to think I've gotten pretty good at it. This is my first time posting any work on Tumblr, despite being a reader of stories on here for quite some time.

I am a self-proclaimed "war boy enjoyer" — so you can safely assume I've watched Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and a few different films. Haven't gotten around to Generation Kill quite yet. Outside of period pieces, I enjoy tolkienverse, animanga, and thai dramas primarily. I also play a lot of Dungeons & Dragons and play a lot of video games ( and for all our sakes I am a Gemini, ENXP, and 8w7 ). I’ve got a puppy named Loki who likes to bite my hands to prevent me from writing, and I’m prone to impulse posting AUs at 3am because all of my friends are enablers (affectionate).

Spencer + Extracurricular Activities 

Spencer likes being busy because it keeps her from focusing on...literally anything else. she doesn’t have to realize how alone she feels in her own home when she has a million things on her mind. More than that, she knows that she needs to be busy because she’s always trying to measure up to her perfect sister. what little affection her parents give out goes automatically to melissa, and she tries so hard to measure up. she tears herself apart trying to make them all proud of her. 

she needs everything because they look good on college applications, and if she wants to get into UPenn, she needs them all. she doesn’t just need them, though, she needs to be the best at them. The Hastings breeds a culture of competition. Even their days are set up for competition, with a game tailored towards discussing the highs and lows of the day so that it will be put to a vote and decide who had the best day. each member of her family will rattle off all the ways they are the best at what they do, while spencer is left scrambling to come up with how she can one-up them, only to fail every time because her achievements never measure up to melissa’s. 

the few times she starts to think that her parents might be proud of her also don’t belong to her. the essay she wins an award for belonged to her sister, and it was the first time that her parents started to care about her, only for it to be for something that she regrets. she was drowning under all of the pressures, on top of everything that was happening with W*en, and she never thought it would get the attention that it did. the award turned into another thing to be added to her list for garnering attention from the Ivy Leagues. It wasn’t about her, but about getting on the radar for the colleges that were good enough for her name.  

the next time she thinks that she might get a chance to impress her dad, it turns into trying to impress his client. she practiced tennis for hours for the doubles game to be good enough to impress him, and she knew it. her dad expects perfection, and so she was going to work her ass off to reach it. she is dedicated and puts her all into everything that she does, even a “friendly” match of tennis. 

This, however, is not something that she is aware of. She enjoys tennis, and she starts to enjoy it even more because it isn’t connected to school. It feels like something that belongs to her. It’s another sport, like field hockey, and it isn’t academia, which everyone knows she excels at. It’s something that she has to work to be good at, which she does for everything else but not the same way. It’s also something she can do for fun. she has the ability to play tennis just because she wants to. it doesn’t hit her until much later that it’s also a desperate attempt to try and be close to her father. Through those matches, it is something that they can do together, which is so rare for her. She wants to feel that connection, and with them always going after Melissa, it is the only way she can think to have it. this is an unconscious process until after her dad asks her to water down her skills for a business deal. he is proud of her when she acts like she is terrible at the game, and she hates losing to begin with, but she hates disappointing him more. it occurs to her then that they weren’t connecting, and he didn’t care about her skill, he was using her for his own business deals. 

every single thing spencer does in school and outside of school connects back to expectations. it means she has a hard time knowing who she is and what she wants because she needs to focus on being the best. she needs to own her last name, and she wants to impress her family, and that takes precedent.
