Today, in all of the excitement as NASA releases unprecedented new images of our universe, Invisible Strings is celebrating Dr. Jane Rigby!
Dr. Rigby is the Operations Project Scientist on the JWST team, and the recipient of the 2022 Out to Innovate LGBTQ+ Scientist of the Year Award.
Did you know?
James Webb, for whom the telescope is named, was involved in the lavender scare purge of LGBT government workers, including purging LGBT NASA scientists; if his policies had persisted into the present, the contributions of Dr. Rigby toward realizing these incredible new images might not have been possible!
Never forget that we have always been here, we will always be here, and we will do good for the world whether you want us to or not. In Dr. Rigby's words:
"Do fabulous science, be fabulous, and be kind,"
To learn more about positive contributions of LGBT people throughout history, we recommend "We Make it Better" by Eric Rosswood and Kathleen Archambeau

I made this in honor of American Astronaut and Physicist Doctor Sally Ride, who became the first American Woman in Space on June 18, 1983.
This drawing was a blast for me to make of such a remarkable woman, I hope y'all find it's subject as interesting as I do.

My game is out now!
re:curse is a surreal RPGmaker horror game inspired by the likes of OFF, Ib, LISA: The Painful RPG and Yume Nikki.
Play as distraction-prone researcher Linda Langley and explore as your laboratory distorts and degrades around you. Send emails. Grapple with your clown infestation. Face consequences. Maybe even survive!
This is a game about...
doors
screens
bitrot
self-fulfilling loops
computer viruses (not real ones)
trans-temporal communication software
gay subtext
surprises
secrets
re:curse was solo developed as a passion project, mostly between 2020-2021. I've returned to it and added the final touches necessary to make a finished game. Bundled with the game is a trove of bonus content for your perusal, including uncompressed source files, concept art, unreleased original music, 3d files, and more. I hope you enjoy!

Happy birthday Elke Mackenzie!
British lichenologist Elke Mackenzie was born on 11 September 1911. She's best known for her participation in Operation Tabarin, where she travelled to Antarctica during the 1940s to collect and study lichen samples. Elke came out as trans in 1976, and announced in the International Lichenological Newsletter, that she “should now be addressed as Dr. Elke Mackenzie.”
Before coming out, Elke had subtly inserted her true identity into her work - a 1972 paper of hers, published under her deadname, acknowledged "Miss Elke Mackenzie for technical and bibliographic assistance in the preparation of this paper."

I have this henchman whom I see only as a childhood friend who really seems to idolize me for some reason which is why they are my henchman even though they seem to be a nice and sensitive guy at heart.
So a while ago I experimented on him with magical gamma radiation to give him the ability to transform into a giant rage monster. Thought that would help him with the whole ‘not evil’ thing. It didn’t seem to work, though. I guess radiation really does just give you cancer and not superpowers, huh?
Anyways, completely unrelated, shortly after that a new superheroine nemesis appeared that is a magical girl with emotion based powers wearing a pastel pink, white, and blue dress. And for some reason she always seem to show up to foil my plans right when my henchman isn’t there to fight her!
So I got an instant crush on her which isn’t even unrequited! It’s like she already knows me! Unfortunately our forbidden love would never work out because #hero x villain relationships just too based. Also because she keeps foiling my plans and giving me radiation poisoning

The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist by Ben Barres
goodreads
Tumblr media
Ben Barres was known for his groundbreaking scientific work and for his groundbreaking advocacy for gender equality in science. In this book, completed shortly before his death from pancreatic cancer in December 2017, Barres describes a life full of remarkable accomplishments--from his childhood as a precocious math and science whiz to his experiences as a female student at MIT in the 1970s to his female-to-male transition in his forties, to his scientific work and role as teacher and mentor at Stanford. Barres recounts his early life--his interest in science, first manifested as a fascination with the mad scientist in Superman; his academic successes; and his gender confusion. Barres felt even as a very young child that he was assigned the wrong gender. After years of being acutely uncomfortable in his own skin, Barres transitioned from female to male. As an undergraduate at MIT, Barres experienced discrimination, but it was after transitioning that he realized how differently male and female scientists are treated. This led him to become an advocate for gender equality in science.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this memoir before and I personally probably won't read it, but it does sound like it could be interesting.
