Revisited a story that was very important to me as a child, and learned about the author being very vocal about the harm gender roles & stereotypes cause. I thought "oh that's great!" but was afraid. What if she only applied that logic to cis ppl?
I did some searching, and found out that not only does she support trans ppl, but has also spoken multiple times about how important it is to be able to see protagonists outside of the perceived norm. A.K.A., she doesn't see my very existence as wrong.
I let out a deep sigh of relief. I could continue to enjoy this thing that had been so important to me growing up.
But this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Too often I discover a new artist, or even be unsure of one I've enjoyed the work of for a long time up to the present; and I have to desperately search to know if I can enjoy their work. Either I am extremely relieved, or absolutely crushed.
This shouldn't be necessary. I shouldn't be feeling this deep fear that something so important to me, was created by someone who despises my very existence. That I, as a disabled queer femme ex-mormon Pagan witch who was raised like a girl, will be shoved off the emotional cliff of "this person you looked up to hates you for the same reason all bigots do".
I was so terrified that something that meant so much to me as a kid could've shattered me emotionally. Simply because I didn't know if the person who made it hates people like me.
We shouldn't have to live like this.

And one of the reasons why it's been so praised, particularly by the LGBTQ+ community, is because it reflects the community in such a positive way, through such a positive lens, which isn't done enough. [transcribed interview here]

It's funny how people complained about queer baiting when Good Omens wasn't gay enough for them but now people are complaining that Neil Gaiman's new show is too gay. It's like people getting mad that Love and Thunder wasn't very gay but then other people complaining because they acknowledged the existence of gay people and what about the children? Won't someone think of the children? No matter what you do someone is going to complain.

Something about Nick Nelson saying, “I love liking you!” makes me emotional. I can’t explain it but I hope you can understand the meaning behind it as well. The things unsaid in that one simple phrase.

Ethan Clade- The LGBTQ+ Rep We've Been Waiting For
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I just got around to watching Strange World the other day, and it made me UNBELIEVABLY happy.
(Mild spoilers ahead)
I had heard we were going to get a gay character but I was afraid it was going to go one of two ways: It would be something that could easily be brushed aside (not overtly gay, or in a very minor scene with a minor character), or that it would be portrayed in an annoying way (as in, the gay character would be a stereotype or have that be the only part of his personality).
I was very very happy to find out Strange World did none of these things. The gay character in question was Ethan Clade, one of the main protagonists the movie followed. This on its own was huge, as it makes Ethan the first openly gay protagonist in an animated Disney film. Ethan only interacts with his crush (a male character named Diazo) twice throughout the film, and in one scene it is just a short clip. However, it is referenced several times as well. Just after their first scene together, Ethan's father reminisces about his own first crush in reference to his son and Diazo. Ethan can also be seen rehearsing a made-up conversation with Diazo while walking through the forest. Later, he has a conversation with his grandfather, where Diazo is explicitly stated to be Ethan's "sweetheart". In none of these scenes are Ethan's family shocked by his sexuality. They simply accept it as part of him without any dramatic scene of "coming out".
While Ethan's gayness cannot simply be brushed away, it is also NOT the only part of his character. It is only one part of who Ethan is. He does not spend the whole movie focusing on his crush, nor is he a walking stereotype. He is a kid who loves adventure and card games, who cares very deeply about nature and his family, and who wants to find a way for people to peacefully interact with the world around them.
The character of Ethan Clade is a huge step for Disney. I hope more people go watch this movie, and I'd love to see more content about Ethan and Diazo soon.

I see my mother in Evelyn Wang.
She is an immigrant who left her family in China. She is an immigrant who followed her love, my father, and came to the West to make a family here. She speaks to me in English and her family in Cantonese and to waiters in Mandarin. She is an ordinary woman who does ordinary things.
She is an immigrant woman who loves her father, her ba, my Gong Gong, dearly, but there are so many times where his unyielding expectations have hurt her and pushed her away. She loves me and my sibling deeply, but her love comes across as nagging and she tells me that I'm getting fat when she's trying to tell me she cares. I love her. I can't stand living with her for long.
When she says, in Cantonese, "How could you abandon me like that, Ba?", I think of the nights she cried when my Gong Gong hung up a call with harsh, unreasonable words. When she says, in English, "You are getting fat," I think of the dozens of times she has told me that before suddenly deciding I was too skinny after I got sick. When says, in Cantonese, "Ah Ba, this is Becky, Joy's girlfriend. Her girlfriend.", I think of how very much I want to hear that same acceptance from my mother, and how she still hasn't yet give it, but I want it, I want it, I want it, please, mom, why is our queerness so hard to understand?

OMG, I just realised that Cassette Beasts' initial release date, April 26, was also Lesbian Visibility Day!
What a great coincidence to appreciate as a lesbian and Cassette Beasts fan, whose many, many reasons for loving Cassette Beasts including unambiguously canon LGBTQ+ representation, including an actual canon old married lesbian couple in Ianthe and Wilma.
This means that from now on, on April 26 every year, I will celebrate Lesbian Visibility Day and Cassette Beasts' release anniversary at the same time!

Hi. What happened? Oh, um. I kinda got into a fight. With Harry. After you left, and I went back to the group, he... he started saying some... things about you. I just lost it. And punched him, and... yeah. Nick. You didn't have to do that.

Hi! I'm writing a fanfic and one of the main characters is trans, and I'm wondering if it's okay if I write his coming out scene as a sort of "from now on call me <insert name>". And also another thing: the character's pov I'm writing from is sort of set in the future, as in the whole fanfic is just a bunch of memories he remembers, and his friend came out to him a couple years after they met, so he knows his dead name. How should I write those memories before he came out? I don't want to use his birth name and I think it would be confusing if I'd say, for example, "that was the day Matthew told us to call him Matthew from now on". Also, any other tips for writing a trans character would be incredible.
Hope you're having a great day <3
Hey there!
I think having your trans character ask other characters to use his new name is a pretty smooth and efficient way to have him come out.
Here are some other tips for writing trans characters:
Tackling the elephant in the room: deadnames
Writing transmasc nonbinary characters vs. binary trans male characters
Writing transfem characters (pt. 1)
Writing transfem characters (pt. 2)
Writing nonbinary characters - navigating more "obscure" labels (ex. galactian system)
Writing characters with alternating/multiple sets of pronouns
Navigating your trans character's past
Accurately portraying gender dysphoria + trans self-discovery as a cis writer (pt. 1)
Accurately portraying gender dysphoria + trans self-discovery as a cis writer (pt. 2)
Coming out: keeping it casual
Writing queer identities that you don't share with your characters (as a queer person)
Accidental cissexism and unintentional misgendering from well-intentioned characters
How to seamlessly incorporate trans people and nonbinary genders into your sci-fi/fantasy setting (without stealing ideas from nonwhite cultures looking at you eon: the last dragoneye)
The barebones basics of writing genderfluid characters

It's like Maleficent, but they are lesbians 💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The princess isn't supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of Sleeping Beauty, true love is more complicated than a simple fairy tale. Perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Holly Black.
'Malice is the dark and wicked heart of a fairytale carved into a book. This story is beautiful, vicious magic.'
Tasha Suri, author of Empire of Sand
'A truly original and clever retelling of a classic that had me racing to the end - you'll never look at Sleeping Beauty the same again.'
S.A. Chakraborty, author of City of Brass
Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love's kiss.
Utter nonsense.
Let me tell you, no one in Briar cares what happens to our princess. I thought I didn't care, either. Until I met her.
Princess Aurora, last heir to the throne, the future queen her realm needs. One who isn't bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. But with less than a year before the curse kills her, any future I might imagine for us is quickly disappearing - and she can't stand to kiss yet another idiotic prince. But maybe I can help her. If my power began the curse, it might be the one to lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.
But we all know how this story ends. Aurora is the beautiful princess.
And I am the villain.

I know that we’re all a bit confused about what happens in the last episode of Heartstopper with Imogen and Sahar at Prom. But if there’s one thing this show has tried to teach us again and again is that we shouldn’t be trying to guess and assume people’s identities. Especially before they are ready. I mean, do I need to remind y’all why Kit Connor left twitter? Everyone was making assumptions about what he is and isn’t. “Is he gay? Or is he straight?”
For crying out loud, we even get to see it in S1 of the show with everyone assuming a rugby player couldn’t be any shade of queer. Can we, just this one, let Alice and the writers and Imogen and Sahar and their respective actors tell us in due time. Can we enjoy a show about queer love? Can we applaud them for what they’ve created for us this far? I mean, they’ve done an incredible job so far! I trust that they will tell us the needed stories in due time. I know that they are just characters but this could be good practice for what folks should have done for Kit. And what we should do for others.

Shadow And Bone's Cancellation Highlights A Greater Fantasy Adaptation Problem
"Streamers and studios don't just need to prioritize adaptations of diverse fantasy books; they need to ensure that those adaptations actually get a chance to grow and thrive."
