Kim Dokja never seems to act on cues that he picks up, but he has no trouble reciprocating once someone else initiates. Yoo Joonghyuk just needs to learn how to be more confident.

scene from episode 158, note how he's not moving to accept the hugs but he doesn't shy away from them either

and more of course but I don't want to look for them right now. There's that scene where he meets Uriel and she hugs him before he hugs back. Then any affection Persephone shows him. Han Sooyoung shoving her lollipop in his mouth and him just accepting it completely unfazed. Bihyung was like "dokkaebi babies need to be hugged a lot to grow up well" so he just cradles Biyoo in his arms or puts her in his pocket whenever she's not busy. Doesn't matter if he's busy. He brings her to fights. I keep forgetting that she's there but basically for the entirety of the 73rd Demon Realm arc she's just there on his person somewhere. I don't know how she survived electrocution but the ONLY reason she ever left his immediate vicinity was because he got electrocuted and someone took advantage of that moment of weakness to kidnap her. He's had her for like a month at most and he's brought her to SEVERAL big fights, she got kidnapped, he brought her to a fancy (very dangerous) banquet, and then he left her at the edge of the universe with a suspicious person. shin yoosung and lee gilyoung demonstrably would love kim dokja if he were a worm. they've proven it. they have a room full of evidence of how much they love every creature they think could possibly be kim dokja. when he disappears from the world they see him in all things and their love expands accordingly. so yeah, they'd love him if he were a worm. if he's a worm they immediately make him a super comfy terrarium and attach a label that says KIM DOKJA WORLD'S BEST WORM. the first few times they fight over who gets to cuddle him they maybe accidentally pull his head off, but they're quick learners. (and it grows back. the guy's a worm.)

now would they also find a way to make kim dokja being a worm into a competition over who loves him best? obviously. lee gilyoung would be all smug at first. he'd be like hyung is a bug, i win!! and shin yoosung would be all actually it means more that i love him because i clearly love ahjussi for ahjussi whereas you just love all bugs so it doesn't count. and then they'd slapfight until some nerd came along to reveal that worms are members of kingdom animalia, thereby destroying shin yoosung's argument. they have to settle it as a tie. a worm is clearly a bug and technically an animal. either way kim dokja is kim dokja and they would love him in any form, in every universe.

Wherever one will be, the other will rush over to protect them

Ok.! Time to go insane about shin yoosung (I love Lee gilyoung too but I need to talk about shin yoosung otherwise I will explode.)

every so often at least thrice a week I think about how attached yoosung is to dokja it just turns my heart inside out. Like she really just started off thinking she was better off dead, and no one wanted her, and then han sooyoung shows up and threatens to kill her and she thinks "oh. I kind of deserve it." and what does dokja do? He protects and saves and nurtures her. Which is already very heartwarming right?

And then she learns about this future self of her from the 41st round, gets 41st sys' memories of pain and feeling neglected by 41yjh, literally everyone wants to kill her, and also her future self is this monstrous beast who's wreaking havoc, the man (yjh) whom her future self decides to stake thousands of years on wants to kill her as well, and future self has already killed herself like once. And so this is like a whole ass onion of layers that are reinforcing her mentality that she's unneeded and she should die and everyone wants her dead and the world is better off with her dead, right? And WHAT DOES DOKJA DO. WHAT DOES DOKJA DO. HE

1. Protects her immediately, putting himself between her and yjh's sword

2. "yoo Joonghyuk if you hurt her I won't forgive you"

3. Protects her future self (who has done terrible things and was also forsaken by the person she struggled so desperately to help)

4. Due to trust in dokja, this causes kimcom to all protect future sys as well without hesitation

5. Gets pissed on behalf of scenario enforcement upon 41sys and promptly uses a good chunk of his riches to beat up the dokkaebi

6. (sys isn't aware of this but I'll add it anyway) saves 41sys soul from the dead and reincarnates her into a baby which he raises with care

LIKE HE SAVES HER, SAVES HER AGAIN, SAVES HER FUTURE SELF, BRINGS HER FUTURE SELF BACK TO LIFE, LIKE I'm overwhelmed. Can you tell? He said "you are needed, I won't let you die" in like 20 different languages, and I just. I cannot even begin to fathom how much that meant to shin yoosung, she's so young yet she told dokja he could kill her, omg her and gilyoung r rlly besties for lifers because why are they both fucked up, please.
